As a Canada who speaks both French and English and who follows politics quite closely, I have to say that the headline and some of the reporting here is quite misleading. A reduction in immigration has broad support across Canada. I wouldn't say that notion is dividing the country in any significant way. You do have certain industry groups that disagree, but among the population these reductions have broad support. This is a historic change in public opinion in Canada, but it has been driven by the unprecedented increase in immigration under the last term of the Trudeau government. To put this in context, non-permanent residents in Canada numbered around 1.5 million on Q3 2023, but by Q3 2025, that number sat a just over 3 million. The previous government increased immigration targets by 3 or 4 times over what they had been for years, which caused a number of economic issues. Essentially, the volume was simply too high for the economy and society to support. This was unfair to both Canadians and new comers, many of which could not find employment or afford a decent place to live. The changes being suggested are largely bringing Canada back to what the targets were for over a decade before, though a bit lower to account for the sudden surge. Canada remains one of the most pro-immigration countries in the world. However, and this is where I think DW's reporting is misleading, there is a distinction to be made between policies at the federal level and policies at the provincial level. Immigration, per our constitution, is a federal matter, however, Quebec in particular is distinct from other provinces. I don't mean only culturally and linguistically, but also in the powers that have been devolved to it by the federal government. On the question of immigration, Quebec has more powers and more ability to set its immigration targets and programs than any of the other 9 provinces. The particular program discussed here, the Quebec Experience Program (PEQ), is a particular immigration stream that only existed in Quebec. So what is happening with that program cannot be labeled as a whole-of-Canada thing. Where the changes to the PEQ are controversial, unlike the general changes at the federal level, is that people who immigrated under that specific program were promised certain things. There was a multi-year time line to Permanent Residency and then Citizenship. Many of those people have been in Quebec for 5-8 years already. However, the changes made to the program were done in such a way where people who many years into the program, had gotten an education, started a career, had children, ect. are now being told they can't continue and must leave Canada. There are even stories of people who married Canadians, now have children, and the one parent who was under this program now faces the possibility of having to leave Canada and be separated from their family. All through no fault of their own. That is what many people see as unfair, and I agree, however limiting future applications under the program, to bring in less people, that is not controversial. Canada has no responsibility to bring in people who are not already in Canada, but Canada does have some responsibility towards people who uprooted their lives to move to Canada and built new lives here based on promises and representations made to them by the Canadian and Quebecois governments. We should no simply kick those people out of the country.

The larger issue you don’t seem to understand or convey in your video is the fact that this racist and ignorance-fuelled behaviour becoming so normalized without thinking about the deeper issues at hand trickles into society at large is it eventually seeps into racism in general towards other cultures (although it’s not right towards any culture or ethnicity). Basically if you’re not white or white passing people become less inclusive or accepting, or write you off thinking you’re a foreigner (have seen this being experienced by a lot of Canadian born friends). This is all in all a reflection of the failing critical thinking skills in our society and dumbing down of our culture. If you think you’re gonna sit cushy and you’re safe because you’re not one of the indians, well you just might be next! People have lost empathy and decency. A lot of the videos posted online are exaggerated posts to garner views and engagement, but it’s not necessarily the truth.

I live in a medium size city in Canada I’m not gonna say the name of it, but it has in between 100,000 and 400,000 people but where I live it seems to be 30% Indian immigrants and I am not racist one bit but it it seems to be more immigrants, then are actual people that lived here before and it just seems to be like the city. So. As a renovations contractor, I do bathrooms, kitchens, basements and additions...I have been called many many times by people from India to quote their work. I believe that there needs to be less mass migration and it needs to be more controlled. Multicultural nations historically do not remain stable, think of Yugoslavia or Austria-Hungary, it’s already been shown by how Quebec doesn’t really want to be a part of Canada. I am especially against foreign cultures consolidating into one area such as Brampton or Ontario as a whole, Canada is a white country and white people should remain at least 75% of the population or else things start going downhill.

Major reason for so much immigration of Indians is because here in india to get a well paying job and a well settled life you need to be educated and skilled. Whereas in countrys such as canada it is more easy to have a good living with less efforts and less education. Therefore they prefer moving out of country than working hard in there own country. And in the case of Brampton they saw an opportunity and demand for businesses and workforce so they grabbed there opportunity. Because at that time there was not much going on in Brampton when indians started immigrating . So you can say indians are the reason Brampton has grown gradually. But i do think now it is too crowded and people haven't stopped coming. Now there are no requirements as such. So that is why more useless indians are moving in canada nowadays.

I think very less people have problems with other people who come legally and work legally. The problem mainly lies with the illegal and zero accountability towards that. I'm a Brampton resident. My family immigrated in the late 90s. I grew up on YTV, TVO kids, Fox Kids, Treehouse TV. I also still grew up knowing my own native culture and religion. I attend one of these temples of worship. Despite this, I still made friends with different races of people. I think my community needs to branch out a little more and learn about other cultures that live amongst us. Maybe we need to have a little less pride on where we come from? I don't know what the exact answer is. One thing I know is we can definitely get along. Just need the community to adapt more and actually learn Canadian culture. Maybe go see a Blue Jays game at the Skydom? Maybe know who Wayne Gretzky is?? LOL.

As much as people don’t like their hometowns changing like that, it’s unfair to say the immigrants come by jumping borders and by applying asylum. This is an interesting issue. I have lived in both Brampton and Surrey, and there is some real issues with immigration. But the homeless you showed made me think about the other side of the coin, these Indian immigrants would probably do a better job feeding our own homeless if they were aware they were welcome. Things like garbage and stuff, indians have less civil duty because their own cultural issues. But they have a sense of duty of family and community. So we need to hold our goverment responsible for not handling emmigration properly, but also if have compassion and bring these people into our communities as well, then you will feel a new sense of duty from them. In fact she voted for someone who is going to make it harder if not impossible for them to come back the right way in the first place. Is she not thinking? If they get deported, that is going into immigration records and when that gets pulled up when they apply to come back it will likely cause any legally efforts to return to be rejected. And who knows how long that will stay in their system? Could be years, could be permanent. Biden’s idea to help those undocumented who are married to citizens to be able to apply and get a temporary visa to stay here while they wait so that families wouldn’t have to be broken up by having the applicant return to their country of origin. That was not just a great idea from a humanitarian point, but they could apply for a job that wasn’t going to take advantage of them by paying below minimum wage, with no rights if they are injured. That could help bring local wages up. They would start contributing back by paying their fair share of taxes, and do on. My daughter is nearing the end of 2 great years in Canada on an IEC (backpacker) visa from Australia. She’s loved the people, the landscape (mostly lived in BC and Alberta) , and working there…. She picked up interesting jobs, worked very hard, just about made ends meet, has been great. \n\nShe was even offered a permanent job by a major Canadian co last year (she was working for them on a one year role at the time) that would’ve paved the way for her to apply for PR…but she turned it down without a second thought….. for all the reasons you would know about \n\n- Wages aren’t great (maybe 20% less than australia), \n\n- taxes are high (incl having to pay CPP…in australia the employer pays all pension contributions, on top of wages), \n\n- groceries prices out of kilter, \n\n- rents consume most of what’s left…. \n\n- AND, even if you could save a deposit for a house, or shoebox apartment….what’s the point, could never afford it. \n\nShe’s seen nearly all her Canadian friends resigned to their fate of being perennial renters, of being perpetually skint. It’s no life. She’s sad to see it - coming from a country of perpetual optimism and opportunity, to learn over time how such a (on many levels) similar country isn’t like that, that has somehow got it all so wrong. \n\nIf you are thinking of “australia” as your answer, it’d be a fair call\n\n- Avoid Sydney if you can (a less expensive Vancouver) but rest of the place is “workable”. \n\n- Average wage in Perth is $100k (C$90k) and average house (full size…not an apt or townhouse) price is about $700k (C$630k) …so do-able, if tight to start with, for youngsters (like you..!) \n\n- I’ve been to Vancouver’s East Hastings St, and so can confirm is nowhere close to that in Oz. If they have to pay their tuition , housing and other living expenses they seem to have to work more than what they are allowed. Overcrowding of homes lack of housing spots not gaining knowledge and skills required. Fine tuning reason for need for immigration and developing qualities in immigrants that countries vye for. Changing the composition of population should not be the problem. Creating conditions for getting the right fit is needed. Point system was good I think but too slow to fill the gap of people needed. I find the speed with which housing needs increased mushrooming of colleges increased and beneficiaries of facilitators that responded to market demands have I think created the problem.
