If you look at most walkable, well serviced cities in the world, it is clear that nothing that is good, is particularly affordable. It can be affordable *today* if you move there, but it is likely not affordable if you live there and make their wages.\n\nToronto has become more expensive as time passes. It was great value in the 1990s when things were cheaper, when Toronto's future was less solidified, and there were less immigrants. Now, it is keeping up in cost with other walkable, dense cities in North America.

The old it hasn't touched my life is a typical American response. Until it does. There were almost 2 mass shootings a day (630+) in the US in 2023. Back in the 70s and 80s, I spent a lot of time in the US due to my involvement in sports. Today, you couldn't pay me to step across the border. Ya, all gotta get your shit together. Fascism is knocking at your door. And it's migrating north. Canadians are better educated, and with our diversity, the average Canadian has a deeper understanding of the world. We are a global village unlike the US melting pot. It's a sad statement to make, but the world doesn't love America, just your money. Way back, I loved going to the Sabers games. It was a great night out, and only a quick hop across the border. Those days are long gone, and it breaks my heart.

America has some breathtakingly beautiful places and my girfriend and I do Storm chase down there when we get a chance, however we always can't wait to return home. As flawed as Canada can be sometimes, we would never consider moving there at all. It's a great country to visit but it's a NO from us.

Toronto resident here. I do agree with everything that Alina pointed out. Those thing exist. But the only REAL problem is the high cost of rent. It now equals and even surpasses the cost of a mortgage. If the rent problem were resolved, and they can do this by simply building more housing (which they are now starting to do - with government programs and incentives), then most of these problems Alina reported on would recede or disappear completely. \n\nAlso, the homelessness is not visually worse than anywhere else I've visited. Homeless encampments are visible in every city I've been too. However, in Toronto, a LOT of homeless people come from other parts of Canada. \n\nThe violence that Alina referred to was just a snapshot in time. She made her video around 4 months ago, and at that time there were several truly shocking incidents on the subway (which even made international news). Those incidents have not continued. The subway system, and Toronto, is still a very, very safe city. We are the third largest city in North America, after LA and NYC, and we had something like 50 homicides last year. Chicago has like 500. Just by way of example. \n\nI love Toronto, even though it is very expensive to pay rent here. But there is so much to offer that I wouldn't consider living somewhere else. Not a chance. It's great that you can live somewhere else if you work remotely, but when you're not working, what do you do?...Toronto is safe, clean (except in tourist season), with limitless opportunities for career and lifestyle. Wouldn't live anywhere else.

I’m Canadian, my parents didn’t have $28k to give me to go to university. So I’m sorry these ppl think that going to school in Canada is some magic ticket to a successful career making great money, but why should Canadians feel bad for these ppl? Born and raised in Toronto, and a university student. Definitely feeling the choke of the city, many of my friends are greatly considering moving to America or abroad after university. Hopefully the city can back on track, this city is awesome.

This is my 13th year in Canada, I am so sad to see the change, I really hope it will become a better country again with Trudeau stepping down. But we also have to be fair that there are not many countries become better since COVID. Many of you leaving or planning to leave Canada are more like rich country retirees taking advantage of the wage and currency differences between rich and poor countries. So let’s put it this way, if many of you have not worked your whole life here in Canada, will you still have a quality of life in your home countries, such as Southeast Asia or South America? I doubt majority of the population there is make a good money and having great work life balance, and everyone there could afford a decent retirement life. what is more close to nowadays reality is people coming here and hoping they could have a better paid job and settle down here, but most of them found out they are struggling to even maintain their normal life in this country, so they left. For those who came years ago, they made a saving which may not be enough to support a good retirement life here, but is more than enough in other countries, they also choose to flee. Then those successful immigrants will stay here with the option to travel anywhere they want. My son's classmate's grandfather immigrated to Canada long time ago who later become a well known cardiologist and was rewarded as one of the top 25 immigrants Award, all three daughters are now specialists too. I really hope Canada could rise again!

I find it so weird when they ask for Canadian experience when you just came to Canada I blame the employer they make it difficult for people to get hired and in return people leave to find a job in a different country I did the same thing came to Canada to look for work working in IT and I didn’t get IT job because I did t have any Canadian experience. After two years of working at a job that was not even what I studied I left Canada and found a job that I studied for I got a good job in America Long island New York and never looked back……. I get paid double then I would have if I had gotten a job in Canada any way ….. forget Canadian experience it’s not worth moving to Canada the country has changed. Why and how the great, rich North America got to this state of misery in 21 century?! What are the real reasons? For example why in 21 century there are more mental disorder patients whom are not supported by a rich , resourceful government and eventually end up to the streets?! Why there was not such problem in 19 or 20 th centuries? How the society was taking care of them back then? Or, why when people lose their physical ability to work, there is not a system of permanent support for them? Why there are not enough houses built for those who have been disadvantaged for real reasons? I mean most of these homeless people are not addicted. A lot of them are willing to work and contribute to society, yet there are not enough support for getting them back to a normal lifestyle! Why rich governments are not making their countries a better , healthier, safer place for their citizens? But only having talks in wef conferences! It sounds all fishy and intentional to me. They should have come up with ways of solutions to end this. Yet we see it getting deeper and bigger. Isn’t it weird that over 350 000 people are homeless in a vast, rich country such as Canada?!

I stopped visiting Canada 40 years ago because of insane or corrupt border control policies. I traveled to Canada from California to record an album for a popular rock star. My crew number 4 people and we had reserves a month for basic tracking in a studio there. We bought our own reels of 3 inch wide recording tape because the studio wanted twice the rate as normal and since my studio was a distributor for the mastering tapes we brought from my own inventory. Each reel of tape was 3 lbs and brought 30 reels. We got to customs and they said we owed money for importing the tape. Normally a reel would have been $180, and customs wanted $38,000 x 20, and would not let us retrieve it to take it back to the US side of the border. How can a tape worth $180 suddenly have duty of $38,000?\nIt was explained to me as the Potential Value of the tape which meant AFTER a hit song was recording in it. Most recordings are total losses and the tape cant used on a new project even if properly bulk-erased. They expected me to pay on the spot $760,000 in duties. I gave up and left the tape with them. I called the artist and said we could not do the project in Canada and we went back to California. The artist came to us a few months later and the result was a minor hit, and probably barely made its production cost since the label only distributed it in Canada. I talked to an international trade lawyer about what happened and he said customs officials were wrong in Canada but they are given full latitude with no appeal so his advice was never take anything over the border that I did not mind being confiscated. Sometimes they would let it in because it was going back out in a month, but likely they sold it off and pocketed the money. The US is corrupt on a federal level but Canada is corrupt on the local level. I moved out of the US 24 years ago have a much higher quality of life than is even possible in the US, and live very cheaply. Total cost of living with a very active social and cultural life impossible to duplicate in the US which as some of the least options for culture. And my cost of living is $1500 a month, less than utilities alone for one house in California, and that is for 2 people. Last month for example I attended world class opera, ballet and symphonies 9 times, and went out to dinner, in jazz clubs or dance clubs, visited12 top museums, and it was still under $1500 for the month. A pair of tickets to the MET in NYC for lower grade performance, sets, orchestra ad theater, was $1800!! $600 for tickets to drama for 2. Here there 237 drama theaters within walking distance of my city center home, and can walk anywhere at any time of day and be safe due to VERY low crime rates. Free medical is good. I am not citizen but still I had an operation and 10 days in a vip single room for $5300 and despite my insurance I had been paying back in California $824.month, it was going to cost me out o pocket $500,000 and one day in a recovery 12 bed room, and require paid nursing attendant for 30 days. The results were great and was treated like king.\nCanadians have lost control of their government but Americas are screwed regardless, with lower than international standards for everything, with crime, corruption in Washington, extreme cost of living, no access to culture, few if any safe parks. My adopted city is not only far more beautiful than any US city, my GF can walk, alone, anywhere in a city of 7mil at any time of day through any of the 600 beautiful parks open 24/7..at 3am. There are no homeless, and 80% of those over 20yo own their home clear of debt. No college debt despite twice the % of people having degrees. The rest of the world caught up and has surpassed the US and Europe in quality of life. \n\nI have only been back to the US 5 times in 24 years and each time I am shocked by how much the entire society has declined while most of the world outside of Europe, Canada, US, UK or Australia have dramatically improved.\nEvery year since 2008 more Americans leave the US to live elsewhere than legal immigrants arrive.

Once I get my passport I will move to eastern europe, asia or latin america. Canada/USA are great as home/plan B countries for the cases when something went wrong - ie wealth-fare or social support . Normally living here is just stupid - no accessible healthcare, expensive housing, un-tasty food, western bureaucracy that promotes people to avoid thinking in favour of formal processes. North America was a great option untill 90s when there simple were no other developed areas in the world and now many countries are much more modern than the west - digitalized, flexible while still cheap and safe enough. Having said that the west is still the most civilized nation and I would continue to pay taxes here to have that safe heaven.

You are true man. I lived in Europe and the first month I landed there, I knew that I will never be able to set big goals and achieve them. When I decided to move in Canada, everything changed. having citizenship seems normal, but thinking about Europe (Italy) where i had to wake up at 4 AM to be able to find a spot in the line to renew my documents, I only had to worry about my personal growth. Nowadays, thank you my Lord I am a M. I do not want to say it, but it is true. IO am ready to set new goals. Have resided in America for a period of time...in a smaller community.. the Americans are beautiful warm people which I met..Canadians are quick to bias there opinion of america..if your free enterprising I had a wonderfully time there..and willing to understand Americans think quite different . The US is very competitive and a lot of opportunities. There is great opportunities in North America. You are saying the truth.

This is a great video and so true.. but I have looked to escape the US, I am more than financially-free and no family in the states becaused they all died. I lived places for months at a time in the world, its also very lonely when you don't speak the local language or are not part of the culture. I lived on many parts of Europe and South America and traveled to 59 countries.. We are not a part of those cultures, it may make more sense to find communities in the US in rural areas that have co-living, co-working spaces..

The comment about the U.S. education system should've been more clarified. The U.S. education as a whole, is behind the majority of developped countries. What you learn in grade 10, the majority of other countries have learned it in grade 8 or 9. The U.S. system doesn't seem to teach anything outside of the U.S. Here in Canada, our edcucation system will teach us a bit about the U.S., England, France, other European countries, Asia, South America, etc... We learn a great deal about our country, but we also learn about the rest of the world as well. Oh, and one last thing about our education system (and many other countries around the world) .....we don't ban books from school because there might be some references to gays, lesbians, LGBTQs or LGBTQIA2S+ in it.

I lived in Brampton for six years, if you really want to eat a great non-veg then only try going to a Pakistani Restaurant (restraun)....... you must know one thing for sure that any non-veg (Goshtt) bought by any Indian Restaurant is always always Grade-3, the lowest grade and of course the Cheapest.\nIn Pakistani Restaurants in North America (I'm saying anywhere in North America) the Goshtt is always Grade-1 (the best)..... not many people know this...... Back about 15 years ago I was down in Indiana on Ohio. In the people I met in the Midwest states. Great people laid back hard workers. America might have its problems, but so does Canada. Lot of similarities between both countries. And as for Canada's free health care. It's not so good right now. People are having hard time finding doctors. People wait hours to get into appointments. The only thing nice about free healthcare. Is it's free for some people and relatively affordable for other people. But it's not the best healthcare in the world. Like people said, least in America, you can go in and see a doctor and you're in and out pretty quick. But if you don't have free health care yet pay for it

My husband and I lived in Columbus, Ohio for 12 years. During that time we had two babies, but we had insurance so the price tag wasn't too bad, overall. We made good friends there, all different political views but we got along well and it was great. We lived in Ohio both pre and post 9-11. I definitely noticed a difference in the growing patriotism around us. Even pre-9-11 there was a higher level of overt patriotism than I was used to in Canada. For instance, more people had flags in their yards or America-themed bumper stickers than I was used to in Canada. But post 9-11 patriotism grew immensely, and we started to feel like political views were starting to have an effect on friendships. Also, Ohio passed a conceal carry law (firearms), and I found my awareness that anyone around me might have a concealed weapon unsettling. In Canada the only guns anyone I knew owned were hunting rifles, locked up. But suddenly I had to worry about if there were guns in the houses that my children were visiting. As a Canadian, I just wasn't used to the idea of everyone having guns around. Anyway, we overall enjoyed living in Ohio. The cost of living there was reasonable, the people were friendly, and we only moved when the real estate bubble burst and my husband lost his job. We went back to Canada and, honestly, I've been relieved to be back as I watch the news and see how divided the American people have become. Even some of the friends that I had in Ohio have changed and become a lot less accepting of different opinions. It makes me scared for the future of the US, and the effect it all will have on the rest of the world.

Im Canadian and would prefer to be in America only if the political climate wasnt so crazy. Id miss our free health care but alot of our doctors are poor quality. The gun violence in the States sxares me too. Im sick of Canadian weather and the price of everything here, abd the low selection. I love our beautiful landscape...but the rain ruins it fir me. I prefer sunny skies, blue seas and palm trees. Ultimately theres stuff I like and dislike in both countries..but America seems better when it comes to getting ahead if you can get a good paying job...and...THE SUNSHINE ? Tyler, re health care: America spends twice per capita what Canada spends on health care. As best I know, it's because we have universal care under ONE administration provider, whereas in the USA there are THOUSANDS of plans, and administration eats up the majority of the health care dollars ? \nUS politicians have done a great job of convincing its citizens that universal health care is socialism, and that's BAD ?

Canada is a great country if you wanna be a dependent slave to the government. No guns, free speech is policed and your children can be taken away if you dont agree with them taking hormones and having their genitals mutilated. America isnt perfect but id rather the US then living in a country run by far left wing idiots. Also Canadian healthcare is very overrated. Sure its free but you might die waiting for life saving treatments because the government doesnt want to allow any form of private healthcare if its already “provided” by the government. Most of the gun violence in the US is in the lower income neighborhoods and at least you’re allowed to defend yourself. In Canada if you defend yourself, straight to jail. If you have evidence of self defense youll be ruined by the legal fees. Its sad, Canada used to be great but after 8 years of terrible liberal economic policies the prices have skyrocketed and now canadian kids are being told they’ll never own a house. I am Canadian, my husband is American. I moved to the USA 11 years ago. I live in a liberal state (by American standards) with little violence (by American standards). I like where we live and enjoy most of the people that I interact with. I would move back to Canada in a heartbeat. I must confess that I felt like I stepped back in time 20 years when I moved here - labor standards in the US are so behind the rest of the world (maternity leave, paid time off, job protections, etc). To a Canadian, US culture feels accepting of racism, violence, us vs them mentalities, gun culture, religious and political fanaticism. I still can’t get over how “normal” Americans think their healthcare system is…. most other countries think it is absolutely nuts! I have good insurance, but if I ever develop a serious illness….I will move back to Canada where I can attempt to keep my health AND still have a house to live in. On the surface, Americans and Canadians look alike - but I still feel the cultural differences every day. I’m sure that America feels safe and wonderful to Americans who grew up here - but it can be difficult for people who grew up with different values to agree that these things make America “great”.

You're a good guy, Tyler...and very brave to take on such a dicey subject as comparisons between Canada and The United States. We are two distinctly different cultures. Currently, America is more than frightening. The political system has really become a total mess. A two-party system (basically YES or NO) does not cater to the many grey areas of politics. The choice right now seems to be Fascist or Liberal. That's it! It was not like that during most of my professional life. Thanks to my job, I had a Green Card. But, I also could travel with little difficulty...especially in the South and Mid-West. Why? Well, because I had blonde hair, blue eyes and pale skin. I never got used to states where everyone was walking around with a gun. It scared the hell out of me. As a commercial film director and writer, (unique services - hence the Green Card) I worked just about everywhere in the US. The North East is the most similar to Canada. But get down south, and people were literally walking around with holsters and revolvers on their hips. I never felt completely safe. But America is also a great country full of opportunities and if you are educated and a professional, the money is also great. All Canadians love their Healthcare and Social Safety Net. Generally, I think Canadians are more socially evolved and better educated. Your educational system is awful. And the Bible Belt States are anything but Christian. It's hate and fear-based. But the past 7 years have been the worst since the Trump Cult era began. Trump and his Mega Cult could destroy what was once a wonderful country.

we lived in the USA for 14 years and actually because citizens before we moved back to Canada, and to this day, maintain dual citizenship. The health care was the biggest difference. Fighting with health care providers to get them to pay their portion of a bill was the WORST. They automatically turn down every claim the first time around so you have to get on the phone and fight with them. In the USA, you can only see doctors within your health care provider, or you have to pay full on to see someone outside it. You also have to pay to see your family doctor even if its for a annual check up. NONE of that happens in Canada. Health care in Canada is provided by the government. Health care in America is a BUSINESS, and they are all fighting for your $$. Being self employed in the USA was an eye opener, with a $1100. a month premium, so that we had a reduced annual deductible. No deductible or monthly premiums in Canada. Americans should NOT HAVE TO DECLARE BANKRUPTCY just because they get sick. Otherwise, we loved living there. Great people, awesome Mexican food (you can't get that in Canada), beautiful beaches and excellent access to them. Amazing highway systems,. At the time we lived there, housing was affordable, food and clothing were cheaper than Canada. None of that is true these days. You guys pay as much as we do for food and shelter.
