TLDR; I am an person from a wartorn, oppressive country, and I unfortunately do not have many options to choose from other than Canada to have a chance for a better life.\n\nLet me tell you from the perspective of a person whose dream is to come to Canada: I know all this already, I know things are going terribly and the cost of living has gone up significantly. But the unfortunate thing is, the country I am from, is currently in turmoil. I do not fit in there as a person and hate the culture. Its incredibly corrupt with no growth. I am more western, and open minded, and my original country is a strict Islamic country. I do not fit there at all.\n\nI know Canada has all these problems, but its my only choice for a better future, I dont want to go to US because I dont wanna die, also, EU wont accept me unless I am from EU myself or speak their language which is a catch 22. Australia is also becoming a shithole. That leaves Canada and NZ. NZ doesnt have that good of job prospects and limited scope and I love Canada, always have. The weather and everything that comes with it.\n\nYes its not perfect, but I think its more about knowing that I can go back to a place, that is not dangerous for me and my future family, where I will get good care if I am stable job wise. Once I am in Canada, I will probably buy my own land and use that to have a trailer home there since they are still cheap, save my money, and probably retire in Philippines. \n\nI dont believe everyone else should do that and yes I know trailer's costs depreciates with time, unlike a house, but I dont care about that. I dont think of houses as investment and I never will nor I will participate in that practice. Everyone has a right for home.

High rent and crime are problems across Canada right now. Larger cities will be more strongly impacted. \nThe root causes are actually quite simple. It's from decades of downloading responsibility for many services until they ended up in the hands of municipalities who had no capacity to fund them, then made 2x worse by the disastrous immigration policy of just the last few years.\nIt explains all three of the problems you identify, unaffordable rent, high crime rate, and underfunded social services.\nSo these are not problems with Toronto, but at the federal and provincial levels. Simply repeating that there are plenty of better options elsewhere doesn't make it true, unless you can give specific examples. Other places likely pay less, require longer commutes, don't offer small size rentals, have even worse social support, similar crime rates, or some combination of all those factors.\nToronto itself isn't as bad as this video makes it out to be. The downtown core skews all the averages, yet all the reporting, b-roll, and examples seen here seem to focus on the core. Of course the reason why it's worse in the core is because so many people want to live there! But I'm not going to concern myself about people who complain that they can't afford to live urban lifestyle, to be a part of 'the scene'. There are plenty of much more affordable options within a 30 minute subway ride of the core. Well inside city limits. But your friends won't think you're cool, so... oh no!\nYes, rents are still too high outside the core, of course. But they aren't as ridiculous as this video suggests. The city is massive. Grow some humility and find a place to that you can afford to live, within Toronto.

Look I have NOTHING against Immigrants. But housing has been long ignored by all parties and now we can't even support our own population let alone new immigrants with somewhere to live. It's INSANE. Housing prices are absurd. We are doing immigrants wrong by telling them this is a great place to live. That's just false advertising. My city is super multicultural and I love that about it, but more and more I meet uber drivers that used to be professionals in their country. They're struggling here and it hurts to see that. They deserve better. We ALL deserve better. Something needs to change, and considering how much Galen Weston makes and the fact that the rich keep getting richer, I think we have the means to solve this problem. The CRA has done next to nothing to close tax loopholes. It's gross.

That big man is right A to Z. The refugees still enter the country via roxham road, I think its the problem , Like France 1 year ago. I live in a province next to ontario, at 1000 km from any border and we cant find appartments, we never see FOR RENT, nowhere , never, since covid. This lack of access to health care is a new thing. I agree with your assessment. It now seems lonelier in Toronto. \n\nCanada used to be different because anyone with a good job could afford at least a condo, but life became unaffordable not just for immigrants, but for everyone unless you are in your 50s-60s and own a home. \n\nI have friends working double jobs supporting family back home in other countries, but for some of them the family back home sound like they are doing better than them and own a home. It’s like they are sacrificing their life to be in poverty or full of hardships and their families get to go out for dinners and drinks with friends. Not them. Not true for everyone, but for some yes and I worry about their own retirement because retirement in Canada without lots of savings means you might be homeless or forced to live with family even if it’s not your preference. \n\n without investments and savings, it will be hard to beat inflation. Getting into debt and getting bad credit can mean not getting an apartment. \n\nThe birth rate is going down because it is expensive to have kids and income isn’t enough to match with living costs. Getting help from government is really not something everyone gets access too. One person might get housing support, 10 others may get nothing. Different governments offer different things. Programs end and change often. \n\nIn Canada definitely bargain and shop around for good phone plans. one idea is to get a pay as you go until “Black Friday” then every year or two when your good offer expires there will be many others. It’s the time with the best deals saving almost half. For instance, I have 50 gigs for $25 for two years from a large provider. Telephone companies are the one place where people must bargain and even ask for better deals as a must.\n\nThe people you see living in big houses, will have kids that can’t afford the same. This is because prices keep rising. The system protects the very rich, but will also drain the middle class often within 1-2 generations. Do not link your business to your personal finance, or creditors can take your home. Some not knowing this lose everything and rich people know better. \n\nPeople live until they are very old, so inheritance is pretty much meaningless to rely on, so no matter what your parents have you must hustle in life. \n\nI do think Canada can become what we want over time. Citizens need to fight the trend of great community spaces, restaurants and bars going out of business and dumb corporations move in with bad boring restaurants. Like a McDonald’s where maybe a popular cultural hang out was. \n\nPart of the problem is a lack of mixed income housing areas, so it’s hard to stay living where you grew up. Artists and musicians help make a city great, but many cannot afford to live here.\n\nFamilies and communities staying together means more support for those with young kids and older relatives when they need help. Yet how is this possible in a city that is always pushing out lower income people when wealthier people desire the area. \n\nIn Toronto, every time you move you have to take what is available and that might mean moving an hour away from everyone you know. This weakens communities. Plus, if you live too far from your work you will have no time to socialize for most the week due to travel time. \n\nI think those who grew up in Toronto do have a certain culture of acceptance with others from many cultures, because your friends at school were from all over. But with new migrants sometimes it isn’t until the second generation that their social circles get diverse. This can be isolating and it’s even isolating as those from Toronto eventually leave dreaming of staying in one spot and not forced to move constantly when a landlord investor sells every house you move into. \n\n\nToronto really needs to protect affordability of housing for at least some housing in every section so that people can save money if they live in the city, and not have to leave their communities and be far from their friends and family. \n\notherwise eventually people get sick of the hustle and it’s too tiring to travel 1+ hrs each way to visit someone during Monday to Friday. \n\n20 years ago any professional could at least buy a condo. Not today. There is too much competition now and investors are allowed to buy up all the most affordable housing that once was a pathway to owning a home. \n\nRich policy makers got greedy and destroyed canada and hopefully diversity in leadership will help make Canada better. But they perhaps people knew to Canada can reject this lonely structure and help us rebuild Toronto into an amazing place. \n\nWe need to make sure everyone can afford housing with 30% of their income. I think that will help

I feel like moving as a lifelong Canadian. I love people and love culture. I don't like extremists. \n\nMy problem is simply I don't our government is ethical nor caring to it's citizens, and as far as immigrants go, I am absolutely all for it with a reasonable rate without displacement or a negative sum on people that have built families here already. You can't just say we want to help and not give one thought about implications whatsoever. \n\nWhere I live you can't add thousands of people without thinking about making roards wider or more busses.\n\nWe don't look like idiots, we are. Let's welcome a host of new beautiful people into out country and not have a single plan in place besides pay for their housing (not necessarily bad), pay for their transportation (not necessarily bad), and allow a rent bubble to put our welcoming citizens with Trades to live in tents.\n\nHow about this as a sane alternative, the billions of dollars in road tax from gas prices which hasn't improved the roads, and the billions from legalized gambling...how about we audit our government and take a hard and difficult look as to where all this tax money goes, and more importantly the detailed justification? \n\nSame thing, same day. Canada has to be corrupt as the day is long OR our greatness was built on an history of lies. Take your pick.\n\nLet's hire as a people a 3rd party professional firm with oversight and give them 5 billion dollars, the amount we paid for helicopters and opted out for and still paid by backing out.\n\nThat thought alone should be brilliant enough to enlighten us all.

When I migrated to Canada 30 years ago, this was a different country. This country could integrate foreigners without causing problems for the native people here. It was a moderate number of between 200 to 300 thousand for a population of 30 million The problem is that Canada has more people over 65 years old than young people, subtracting the number of born about 320 vs 220 who die every year, there would be no population growth that could pay for the retirements of the retired people and immigration in the correct numbers was something positive for the economy the problem is a broken immigration system too many without infrastructure and let me tell you a lot of them arrive and in less than a year they leave I think that Canada should not receive anyone anymore for the next 20 years until it fixes houses crisis

It seems that the real problem is drug/alcohol addiction, which is a consequence of broken families. Do you think without immigration these people won't be homeless?

Another classic example of Canadian thinking...let the problem go out of control and cry out loud about it... don't do anything about it ...let local people suffer and complain...never think ahead and learn from mistakes and prevent them in future....those statements are true for all the problems we got here

I love how the security guards were all brand new immigrants too ? In brampton there was a line up at a restaurant 1000 people long for ONE job posting. \n\nIts impossible to live here. And the government thinks its OK because aggregate market prives for apartments are 'acceptable'at 2300/month for a single bedroom. The problem is that 60% or mortgage come due this year, we have 2 million immigrants who are underhoused, and all these people are looking for multi bedroom units which have tripled in price since 2019\n\nEdit: before anyone takes this the wrong way, this is not the fault of the people coming here for a better life, it's a federal/provincial government problem for scamming 100s or thousands of people out of a life here.

First and foremost, Canada has a society problem. It is devoid of energy. To much rules, and restrictions. Lacks social activities, lacks life and energy in essence. People become bored, isolated, depressed and preserved. No social interactions, no competitiveness, no sport, no outdoors, no zeal, no enthusiasm. People barely talk to each other for fear of some dump privacy and security.\n\nThen on the other end for professional, too many protocols and licensing requirements for every single thing.\n\nIt is just too laidback for a modern society.\n\nFor me, I think the society needs to open up.

I lived in the city on and off as a kid and I saw homeless people every now and then depending where I was. I fell in love with the areas I lived in and seeing where my dad grew up and high park. Now I don’t feel safe. I don’t even think I’d feel safe bringing my dog down and visiting my family. Now I see a lot of people homeless in nicer areas and just everywhere. It’s truly so sad my dad even said that it there was problems when he was growing up but now it’s just so much worse.

the west is neglecting the people born here and flooding our countries with millions of people from the third world. the US has just as insane immigration numbers as us. I don't think most people hate immigrants but we cant sustain these numbers any more its killing us all. Then to see the drug problem get this out of hand because of Decriminalization has truly destroyed Toronto. i don't live in the GTA, a few hours outside of it, but the tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people leaving the city all say the same things said in this video. we cant continue down this path...

I would disagree with the cost of groceries. I still think it's quite reasonable here. House is outrageous though. I wouldn't say that health care is bad but it's not great. You'll have to wait for chronic issue but for immediate help we do oretty well. I'd ask to look at the life expectancy and death rate to prove otherwise. A big problem is a lack of good paying jobs.

You think Trudeau has screwed up a little try a lot . Trudeau does not care none of the problems that canadians face effect Trudeau and his flunkies . But truthfully all polititions are corrupt . When you give away millions and millions of dollars to other countries in which is not even Trudeaus money its the tax payers dollars and our government should have no right in spending that money, its simply theft , stealing from Cadians to throw away on his own agenda.

Actually it is really simple, the main reason that educational institutes (businesses in reality) and the country have been bringing in international students (whether India or elsewhere) is that *the international students pay 4-5x more in tuition* and so *educational institutes and the country wants to bring them in as cash cows, to milk them for the money!* *They have been using them as cash cows and milking them* There are so many institutes where there is such an imbalance, where 80-90% are international students and the local minority, the reason again is, $$. \n From international students and imgs there is a boost in the economy because of the high tuition they pay and the tax that is collected from that tuition, they spend on rent (crazy expensive as you know) transport, basic cost of living like food etc, entertainment etc, so the economy did benefit from immigrants and international students, but I completely agree that there is way too much influx. It is not good for them nor for the country, as everything has become so expensive, rent and housing affordability is gone crazy, due to crazy demand and low supply. \n So the problem is greed! I totally agree with True North's the Timz example, and the other places mentioned, and I really think that the government should work on affordability, the housing crisis, health care, sustainability, and fair and equal employment.

So problem I think is not in emigrants itself but in government who does nothing. Government doesnt want to solve home crysis which have been here since 2010 not 2024, same government does nothing with job market and the same government doesnt supply emigration program with enough jobs .

I dont think we should rag on immigrants. I beleive the disastrous consequences in society is due to government policy (and because they do not have the best interests of ordinary Canadians in mind). I have met a lot of good people (immigrants), but I think systemically it is not meant for most Canadians benefit. Government never seems to address the root causes of our issues in society, because the government is a big part of our problems.

The homes are crazy expensive. Just start from million The healthcare is not good if something were to happen to you . Hav e to be waiting in the emergency over night I slips on ice went to the emergency went there at 6:00 for looked at 9:00 waited 4 hrs to get look d at. 3 generation Canadians have it good there parents came in the 90s houses weren’t so expensive then . Know it’s really hard with inflation so high if you don’t have a good job it will be a struggle. Indian students come to Canada thinking just working on cash will be enough ?it will not . Mass immigration is a problem to many people less houses . Canada likes to say they welcome immigrants but truthfully they dont. It is not a problem at all. In most countries, they would see this as an opportunity to build more apartments and make money. Canada is not a smart country. This is a difficult answer. Migrants do not normally show up with masters degrees. They come in as low-income workerso. They come in without skill. What things for free are given free things? But when the clock runs out on the free stuff. Now they have to pay for it now. Believe question is, did those people get the ability to get citizenship before they leave? To be clear, Canada does not pay for drug addicts to have their doses of drugs. They pay for them to have a safe injection site and free clean needles. If they don’t have any drugs and are at risk of dying sure to not having doses, or don’t want to be on drugs anymore, then they can get free doses of methadone which is a pharmaceutical used to help reduce dangerous withdrawal symptoms. I’d say this fact is much different than what you said. I do think there is a problem that needs addressing but you can’t expect right wing conservative givernwments to have a solution either since they usually just want to grease the palms of their rich friends.

I also wanted to go to Canada to study there as international student, but due to lack of financial support, I think I wanted to stay here in the Philippines because of emerging growth and development even there are so many problems that we always face everyday. We pay 40 to 45% in taxes aside from property tax, expensive housing, utiities and food. the current government ruling is the main reason people wanting to leave Canada. you can not blame them just when they think they have seen it all the government adds new taxes(Carbon) we pay all these taxes but we get our garbage picked up once a week!? when a thief steals from you here the police tells you report it yourself online!? there is many problems here but the government pushes to teach little kids sexual contents!? I guess dividing people is the key to rule without challenges.

As an immigrant, i think we are being unfair to canada. We can not just migrate to other countries for an easy life and start blaming and accusing them of not giving it to us while our countries of origin never gave us the same. To me the only issues id have is if there is discrimination ,persecution etc of immigrants. The problems the lady has raised here are universal and much worse in our countries of origin.

Work for your own country. Problems for Indians in USA too! If you think a foreign country will let you take over their employment, governance, etc, you're living in fool's paradise.

Part of the problem is outside Canada, people seem to think Canada only has two cities and two provinces which happen to also be the two cities with the highest housing and rent prices. It is partially this lack of research and knowledge is driving up their demand and therefore prices.

I mean each country has its own problem, it is just about balancing the pros and cons. Also people should do some research before moving to any country that whether they will be able to survive or not. Something people don't think before moving to Canada and then they return back to their country dissatisfied.

Job market is sluggish, Salary not comparable with US, House Rent are so high, buying a house is a distant dream, inflation is high, education standard is poor kids learn more of LGBTQ+ than math or science, infrastructure not spread out like US, concentration is only in Toronto and within 20 km radius, high cost of living for eg. ridiculus auto insurance premiums, groupism & racisim. I dont think people blend in, healthcare serious wait times. I know no country is perfect but Canada lost its charm in recent times because of politics like in India. Overall US is still better but has its own problem like mass shooting & rising cost of living. If you get lucky US is the right option for now compared to europe.

I think it is the quality of the immigrants that come to Canada that needs to be analysed. If too many low skilled or people with unemployable skills are granted visas, then any country, let alone Canada, would seem like a tough country to settle and earn. Canadian govt seems to be lenient in allowing too many unemployable ppl to get into the country. This has resulted in an imbalance. It just needs a strong govt which Canada lacks at this point in time. 90% of the problems can be solved within 4 to 5 years if govt stops or regulates visas.

Canada is becoming worse every day anyway!!! Salary are low (while cost of living is skyrocketing), which is why we have so many Canadians and immigrants who are becoming so anxious, depressed and facing all sorts of mental problems), people are moody, quality of life is decreasing and transport is trash compared to France and the lack for doctors is making this country look like a third world\nEconomy!!! Even Canadians are happy to leave this place (poor weather, lousy healthcare, lousy retirement compared to places like France, lousy transportation compared to most of Europe, worse mental health services than Europe, people are too serious and take things so seriously compared to the French) and honestly, we think of leaving it too for another country.. that you can trust me! You should tell us how many Indian immigrants actually went back to India . Not many . I have seen 20% interest rate here and you think 5% interest rate is high . Indian community is the richest immigrant community in North America . People move to United States and move back to Canada which is normal . 17.5% left Canada but 82.5% are still here , what does that tell you ? There is housing shortage and that will be solved in time . A lot of these problems are caused due to covid shutdown and excessive immigrants coming from India . Question should be asked why so many leaving India ? In 2021 and 2022 , about 900000 Indian immigrants came to Canada and 2023 will likely be close to half a million . We Indian may not like cold weather but we are very comfortable in inside house . So far this year I only had to shovel snow twice and not for months . There is no shortage of job opportunities but One need to be flexible of courier . Canada still tops in most standards and consistently in top 10 among all countries of the world .

Instead of showing (only)big grocery you should’ve also shown big bank companies and big cell phone companies (to name a few).Also Canadians are politically ignorant and therefore tend to elect people who themselves are independently wealthy and are clueless to the problems you have listed (Alberta N/A).On top of these things Canadians are taxed to an extreme degree and actually believe that if they pay more taxes the planet’s climate will become cooler.And apparently they think that’d be a good thing!

Cost of living has gone up due to immigration, plain and simple. The increased market demand from immigrants is not being met by the supply, which means the market inflates. This is economy 101. If there is something people want (housing), the more people who want it and the less of it there is, the more it will cost. Immigration is *dircetly* affecting the housing crisis in an objectively negative way. *Acknowledge it.*\n\nIf you *don't* think that bringing *500,000* new people into the country *every year* is going to further inflate the market then you are delusional. There is not only already too many people in this country for the government and market to handle, but the government's solution is to bring in even more! *They are literally exacerbating the problem before our very eyes.*

Try doing that in American embassy. People think they are privileged after having American passport. If you have any problems channel those concerns by correct means. In no situation you are allowed to argue with the visa officer.

I'm an immigrant and my immigrant friends and I were talking about exactly this just the other day. I'd like to add some context on why so few international students stay: they can't. Schools prey on this very fact. In international recruiting, these schools use the promise of thriving local industries and trot out graduates working locally as major draws to these expensive programs. Then once students are in Canada, many of these schools couldn't care less: they offer little or sometimes no housing support, no immigration advice (or in my case and many of my friends' cases: they give straight-up false immigration advice that can screw you over or even get you in trouble). There absolutely needs to be regulation and accountability for these predatory schools; I think a good starting point would be capping the number of visas they can apply for based on the number of housing units available (either on-campus or via local development subsidy and homestays). Tons of students come to Canada completely unprepared due to false promises made by these schools, and then get spit out into an egregiously inefficient and broken work visa system.\nMy immigrant friends and I are all highly skilled in our specific field. There are only a handful of people in the world (let alone in Canada) who can do what I do at the level I do it, so I would be incredibly difficult to replace if I left Canada. Despite that, and despite being Canadian-educated (Canadian resources invested in me that you'd want to keep in Canada), remaining in Canada has been a massive struggle for me and my friends. We individually spend hundreds and even thousands of dollars every year to apply for permits that have to be renewed annually, but take the government 6+ months to process. Because the government is so backed up, we have to apply for *extra* permits to bridge that gap (more money, and more work added to IRCC's already-long line of applications). I'm in limbo for the majority of the year where I can't switch employers, can't leave the country, etc. It's horrible. \nBut I have it better than most. Of the international students in my year, only I and one other student are still in Canada because the transition to work permits is so needlessly long and difficult. Even a graduate who does manage to get a work permit might have to sit unemployed for 6 months or more before that permit is active. How is a student supposed to survive without work for that long? In order for employers to even apply to sponsor a graduate, they often have to do a lengthy labor market impact assessment, and so these graduates are stuck in a holding pattern, and they're the lucky ones. Immigration is absolutely vital to Canada and I hate how quickly these stories turn to xenophobic rhetoric, but we have to make space in the conversation to take a look at how schools are exploiting students and policy loopholes, and why they're doing it, and address those problems. The current system isn't fair to anyone.
