I thought tariffs affected me as a US consumer? So why is Canada placing tariffs on us if it’ll just affect their citizens? Am I understanding this wrong? Would appreciate if someone could explain.

My skepticism tells me that Trump is doing this so that US American companies will crash, and his rich buddies will buy the lower price stocks. Rich people like inflation. The last scorching inflation we had in the 80s, CDs for 3 years and only 10,000 dollars drew 13.5%, there was also high, high, high unemployment, home loans were 18.5% interest with good credit. This set the farmers up or losing their farms and the Savings and Loan collapse and the subsequent 113 Billion Bail out. This was WITHOUT gutting our federal agencies, cutting back on SNAP and Medicaid and firing federal employees and gutting the agencies' ability to do oversight with the Offices of Inspector General. I can't even tell you why Dept. of Defenses is calling off our cyber defenses against Russia who hacks everything in America nuclear power plants, hydro, etc. Got my gas today - our refineries are fitted for Canadian oil though it's not a 25% tariff but Canada could slap an export tax on it to be paid by us.

We have US tariffs war, but so far they 3 countries to fight with. How dumb is it ?.

As an Australian I am so proud of Canada my second favourite country -- well done. I'm not buying anything American and certainly won't travel there. Direct flights from Brisbane to Vancouver mean I don't even have to go over the US.

Trudeau is serving the final moments of his last term, but his approval ratings shot up since the Trump presidency started. Trump genuinely such a crappy leader than other leaders with approval ratings in the dirt are gaining support for going against him. As an American, it’s damn amazing. I hope the next PM of Canada keeps up the same energy and doesn’t concede to the US. The fentanyl excuse is just that an excuse, trump wants to make money from tariffs to give a huge tax break to the billionaires in the USA including musk, he is not worried at all about fentanyl, he doesn't care about other people, but he does care about tax breaks for himself and the billionaires who support him. I support Canada and Mexico in this trump fiasco, and I hope Canada and Mexico really make trump squirm. trump knows tariffs will hurt the US citizens but he knows it will hit the Lower and middle classes the hardest, not causing him and the billionaires nearly as much trouble. He is hoping that the tariffs will bring in enough money for him to be able to give the billionaires including himself a huge tax break.

How much longer will the US put up with this insane rampage by President Trump, who is alienating reliable partners and making common cause with enemies. America needs to wake up and realize that this will only have dire consequences for the nation.

A huge deterioration with allies indeed. Trump also accuses China of fentanyl. The truth is, China produces a precursor or an ingredient of fentanyl and legally exports to pharmaceutical companies all over the world. Not like the drug dealers in the US call up China and say” hey China, hook me with some fentanyl, bro!”
