THE BIRD FEEDER ANALOGY \n \nI bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with birdseed. What a beauty of a bird feeder it was, as I filled it lovingly with seed. Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food. \n \nBut then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue. Then came the poop! It was everywhere, on the patio tile, the chairs, the table…everywhere! \n \nThen some of the birds turned mean. They would dive-bomb me and try to peck me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket. The other birds were boisterous and loud. They sat on the feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food. \n \nAfter a while, I could not even sit on my own back porch anymore. So I took down the bird feeder and in three days the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the patio. \n \nSoon, the backyard was back to like it used to be…quiet, serene, and no one demanding their rights to a free meal. \n \nNow let us see here… \n \nOur government gives out free food, subsidized housing, free medical care, and free education and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen. \n \nThen the illegals came by the tens and hundreds of thousands, millions. Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services; apartments are housing 5 families; you have to wait 6 hours to be seen by an emergency room doctor; your child’s 2nd grade class is behind other schools because half the class doesn’t speak English. Illegals squawking and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free liberties. When asked why they breed like cockroaches, the reply is that it is a cultural thing. \n \nIt's long overdue for the US government to take down the bird feeder. Otherwise, we will continue cleaning up the poop!

Pricing is not a Canadian specific problem. Look at anywhere people actually want to live in the US, it's essentially the same. LA and NY are just as expensive as Toronto. Only difference is there's less people in Canada that live in rural states like Iowa where everything is cheap because there isn't major city for hundreds of thousands of miles. In the past 2 years I have had 5 crainiotomies, 1 kidney removed and a hernia. Looking at this in the USA, this would cost me over $3, 000, 000 for my care. I would be bankrupt. You say that the health insurance cost ONLY a couple of hundred dollars a month ($2400 a year) ... here, I pay NOTHING per month. Most insurance plans in the USA hve a few THOUSAND dollar deductible on top of the monthly payment. Yes, I do pay higher taxes than in the USA but the social programs are worth it ... INCLUDING HEALTH CARE. There is also a reason why the Canadian lapel pin is worn by Americans in when they go to Europe. There is also a reason why part of the French landscape is Canadian soil (Vimy Ridge ... France gave the area to Canada as a THANK YOU for what we did during WW1). The Netherlands sends Canada 1000's of tulips to Canada every year thanking Canada for making part of the maternity ward in Ottawa Hospital Dutch soil. Queen Jiliana gave birth to Margriet and the only way to stay in line for the thrrone was to be born on Dutch soil ... Ottawa complied. Canada also liberated the Netherlands in WW2.

I'm not an immigration expert or an economist, but the problem with Canada isn't our immigration system, but WHAT the immigrants do afterwards. Sure, we take in hundreds of thousands of them...but for what jobs? Is Canada, for example, a truly dynamic tech hub? At one point yes, but only briefly and it seems like that process has stalled out considerably since the pandemic.\nDo we have the infrastructure for all of these people or are we adding hundreds of thousands of new competitors for housing? We have population growth, but the wages are so uncompetitive that it increasingly feels like Canada is inviting immigrants in to build the country...but Canadians have to create things for them to build or else, this doesn't really work, and these highly mobile, educated people will end up leaving (which is already a problem).

The financial sector is not a good barometer of the economy of a country. I know, it sounds crazy. But, it's true. There are many large businesses from other countries reaping massive profits from Canada which count into the progress of Canada until they decide to leave the country with the money. Also, large companies currently worldwide are more in the mode of pleasing their share holders. Thus, consolidating their businesses and firing hundreds or thousands at a time in those consolidations. The financial sector rarely trickles down their profits at the proper level to keep up with inflation and overall cost of living. This leaves the middle class and poor sinking into an economic abyss as each year passes. Which then leads to less purchasing power by the masses and inevitable economic declines.

I have a lot of US friends, many of them women with children. A lot are worried about their children in USA schools or just going to the playground. The USA has had more than 200 mass shootings in half of 2023 alone, Canada RARELY has mass killings ever...let alone hundreds a year in the US. it's a thing for sure. Plus we have everything the USA has and more. That being said, I love my US brothers and sisters. We rely on each other for a lot of things. But it should also be noted, all our famous Canadians end up in the US, so if any of us won the lottery or be one famous, we will probably move there too ?

Many years ago I had lunch with a Blue Cross rep trying to sell our firm a group insurance plan. She admitted that even basic limited coverage in California cost way more than what we as an employer were paying for our government health insurance. My point is, sure, your company provided health insurance may seem to be free to you, but imagine the hit your employer takes on the bottom line for it. And think of how much more your take home pay could be without those exhorbitant premiums.

When you say school shootings aren't that bad / don't happen every day you really have been conditioned not take it seriously.\n\nLook up the stats, the US has had HUNDREDS of school shootings over the last 10 years, where as the next worst country has had single digits, and Canada has had about 2.\n\nHint, there is only ONE country that I know of that has active shooter drills.

I think you need to look at several things before you say most Americans are OK when it comes to health care. First, what proportion of Americans are NOT getting health insurance through their employer? (Hint: it's more than half.) Second how many people feel they must stay in a job they hate just to retain their health insurance? Third, how many Americans go bankrupt every year due to health care costs? (Hint: it's in the hundreds of thousands. This doesn't happen in Canada.)

Stop allowing rental companies from buying rental homes by mass numbers, they renovate then rent for hundreds more causing rental prices to go up. Do something. Lack of affordable housing -- lack of housing in general -- is the main reason people already living here are being priced out and why so many refugees and immigrants cannot afford the cost when they move here. When these people come to Canada for a better life and/or to escape the suffering that they were living in, they cannot bring their homes with them. It is the government's responsibility at all levels to ensure that these newcomers have a place to go when they come here. A homeless shelter should not be the answer. Buy up office spaces and convert them (if safe to do so with whatever codes need to be met) into affordable housing units. For years we've been seeing hundreds of news articles about vacancies in office buildings being at all time highs, yet only a handful of them are being converted. 500,000 people a year entering a country where there isn't enough housing for them (let alone the people living here already) is irresponsible on the government's part. If this is your pledge, at least give these people a better life and not send them to shelters or onto the streets as soon as they arrive. If Canada is to truly be a safe haven for immigrants and refugees escaping their hardships, it's paramount that the government does what it can to make these people actually feel like their life will change for the better. I'm all for immigration since it helps the economy and knowing that Canada can put people in a better position for themselves and their families, but it's the lack of preparation from the governments that makes me question their pledge in this way.
