I lived in Toronto for over 30 years. Prices on everything are soaring and really getting out of control. Rent, mortgage, food, insurance, and constant high-interest rates would force people onto the streets. Canada needs to do something now! Many restaurants have prices increased by over 20-30% on their menus in the past 3 years. It's just madness and ridiculous. What is minimum wage going to do? Most people I know just work work work, and do not have time to enjoy life. Very sad.

I know a few kenyans here in Australia came as visitors and told they could easily switch to a resident Visa while on shore unfortunately thats the worst lie ever made by an agent. I’ve looked for this girl I met at the train station and someone said she was taken to the detention centre. PEOPLE DO YOUR RESEARCH INFORMATION IS IN MOST OF THESE COUNTRIES WEBSITES! Hi Lynn, this is a very interesting conversation. I moved to Canada in 2003 went to college and became a nurse. First of all it was not easy paying for college I was lucky that husband was supporting with the bills as I went to school. So I would say that I have skills that are very marketable. Our combined family income was over $100,000 CAN. We mortgaged our first home which was very basic for a LOT of money. We had our kids and we had to struggle with childcare as most young families do. By North American standard, we were doing good. We each had a good car ( loaned), we made trips to Kenya every so often but in 2016 we decided we wanted to move back home and we sold our home and we did. I HAVE NO REGRETS. There were several things that made us reach our decision. First, I truly believe that for the Canadian system to work as it does, it has to entrap its residents. Even after 10 years of work we did not have money in the bank. Everything we owned really belonged to the bank. The light bulb moment for me came when I evaluated my net worth. A primary school teacher in Kenya after 10 years of work with good financial management will own a plot, a simple house and will start to invest for retirement. After 10 years of work, there wasn't much in the account, our house would need 25 years to finish paying mortgage and to be honest there wasn't much to show for those years of work. Quality of life really sucks the amount of stress will definitely send you to the grave sooner. This is the case for most first generation immigrants. You might say you are sacrificing and building a future for your children but, my observation was since our diaspora children have not grown in Kenya to see the need for money and what life really looks like without the comforts they are used to, they do not have the same drive as the parents so they often do not excel they are just ordinary. There is also the struggle of growing up as a minority group. A lot of our children because they are seeking acceptance will struggle with self esteem, will have depression or will join the LGBTQ community where they get sense of belonging regardless of their colour. The morals are also different from their parents and they are shaped by the society they grow up in. When I looked at what my life would look like if we kept living there, lets say we eventually pay off our mortgage, when we are old and requiring care, our children will not be able to support themselves and support us because they have to work to sustain themselves so we would to move to assisted living or nursing homes. The cost of senior care is not covered by the government unless you have no money. so we have to sell out home which would be old and outdated but still very expensive and we would have to pay $5000-$10000 per month depending on the type of care we need. so as you can see if we ended in a nursing home for 5 years we will have depleted all the money we made from the sale of our home. So by the time we die, we would not have money to leave for our children. So we worked really hard, supported the economy, and die leaving not much at all for our children, we sacrificed our quality of life, and ended up with children who don't think much of themselves or have very distorted morals. I still remember in my mind as we drove to the airport on our way back to Kenya, I thought of the story of Lot. He was pretty successful in Sodom but I'm very sure on his death bed he had lots of regrets why he ever went there. I know its tough being in Kenya but if you have a job or any way to make ends meet, be like Abraham. God will bless you regardless of whether you are in the dessert.

Lynn, this is a great conversation which really needs to be discussed. In terms of moving abroad for work its something that some individuals are fortunate to get opportunities while others struggle. I have actually assisited individuals especially graduates in gaining internships and jobs with the contacts I had. Many went on to do well, but unfortunately some did not make it. When it comes to immigration, its a case by case basis you can never truly know how things will play out.

I currently pay $734.96 per month for my bachelor apartment in Parkdale, Toronto. All inclusive. I found the place in 2015, and it started at $660.00 per month. It's a smaller building where I know most of my co-tenants. Quiet neighbourhood most of the time. I've been one of the lucky ones for sure. I love this city! I'm from Peterborough and I will never move back. Some of the best memories of my life have been here. But you're right Alina, it has changed. Much like most other major cities in the world. The economic hardships being the #1 issue. Rent going up, wages staying the same, and inflation not slowing down. But with Toronto, the transit system is far behind the progress of cities like New York. Toronto should have multiple subway lines going east and west. Queen St. and Dundas lines for sure. The overall culture of the city is not as vibrant as it was during the 2010s. That could be Covid related. Or things are taking awhile to come back to pre-Covid form. But a lot of great venues and restaurants have been shutting down. And being replaced with the construction of condos. The real estate is insane here. It feels like things have gone downhill since the Raptors won the NBA championship in 2019. Because that really united everyone when there were a million people gathered for the parade. I'm hoping things turn around and there's more affordable housing for newcomers. I know I'm staying here for a while longer. Because of my cheap rent. And career attachments to the city. I can confirm that there's really nothing in Canada. They have no jobs and the Jobs they give to Black Immigrants in particular, whether you have a degree or not, are generally seasonal summer jobs in warehouses, working with plastic injection molding machines. When winter arrives, you get laid of until the next summer and the cycle continues. It was the first place l learnt that racially motivated official murder of Black People by White Police Officers is standard practice in the United States, because it's also a practice in Canada but not as rampant as it is in the United States. \n\nI just don't know who is spreading this false and deceptive information or understand why we're being bombarded worldwide with ads about Canada wanting immigrants to come over for jobs. China and Japan have more and better jobs than Canada. Even Germany in Europe has more jobs as well. When you said “they will only start frustrating you at the ide minute” I was just imagining those very tough immigrations. I’m currently in Fiji I really suffered before I could get access to pass in my 3rd attempt because I was transiting through Singapore. I had to go back and spend another 3 weeks in Egypt! Simple...live to work vs work to live....as Canadian born visible minority...I can confirm no matter where you move in Canada it will all be the same story.....The systemic racism is very real but more about bullying. If you really miss back home, save up, let your kids finish their education and move back home and enjoy your life that you always wanted. The economic situation in Canada isn't really well summarized by an 11 minute video generalizing the entire country like this. There are massive regional income and productivity disparities between provinces, with worker productivity, median income, and GDP per capita being highest in the province in Alberta, and lowest the east coast maritime provinces. Quebec being rather poor overall (compared to Ontario), and it's place in the federation is a whole other discussion worthy of an entire video series related to Canadian economic problems. Canada is also not a typical federation; the provinces have a very large degree of autonomy and jurisdiction over affairs within their border than other subnational units in other federations. So yeah, as a Canadian with an academic background in economics and political science, I have to say that this video is a gross oversimplification, just something to note for anyone that may not know much about Canada.

It's really tough for a black man but you won't know it until you are in one of these countries. As for discrimination, it's everywhere even in Nigeria so you just have to speak out against it no matter what, remain focus on your objectives and move on. As a second generation Nigerian immigrant (parents were born in Nigeria and I was born in the US). I 100% agree w/ his perspective. I’ve spent consider amount of time in Nigeria w/ my side of the family that’s doing well and the other side that aren’t. Aboard should only be for people who have no opportunity back home as in they have tried everything and nothing worked for them. If you are doing well in Nigeria, try and give birth to your kids in the US so they can retrieve citizenship. There is no reason a successful person back home should sell their things and move aboard even for kids as you can send them aboard to receive an education and help them gain citizenship and from their they can file for you. The amount of systemic racism, odd jobs you will have to work (God forbid you don’t have a degree and you move aboard for non degree purposes that’s when aboard will show you pepper), cost of surviving is expense here especially now as inflation is high. It’s just not benefiting especially if you were better off in Nigeria. However, this shouldn’t stop you from coming just know that the road isn’t easy and some places are worse than others. I’ve never been to Canada but have been to the UK and by far would advice anyone from back home to avoid UK at all cost. Not even sure how Nigerians are even making it there lol (it’s a never ending cycle of poverty plus citizenship is very difficult to gain and the discrimination in my opinion is much worse than the US. UK society has a class system and it only really empowers British people. The UK is so bad that they even discriminate against Eastern Europeans that should let you know a lot.) Also why do you think most Brits Nigerians come back to Naija hoping to secure job compared to American Nigerians and let me tell you it’s not because the UK is close to Nigeria, there is a true lack of opportunity. There are more opportunity in the US and possibly Canada compared to the Europe.

And if you want to have a high paying job you have to work your ass off for that. going to school and earning degrees but then you have to work to pay school fees as well. I'm gonna propose something not so crazy because Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the US all do different parts of these already - that any country that's majority English speaking/common law based legal system can opt in to standardize credentials for high school, university, and trade schools. Each country publishes an annual skills shortage list and any citizen of those countries with the right credentials can apply for a work permit (so you can be properly vetted) that becomes valid with a job offer. The US & Canada already do this for select occupations through NAFTA and Aussies can already effectively move to the US under the E-3 visa program. I'm American but went to university in Australia. It's really silly that we don't already do this. I also live in Florida now and work with people from Trinidad, Jamaica, Bahamas, etc. and it's such an unnecessarily burdensome process to hire a professional who you know already has the credentials and work experience.

The arbitrary aspect of the immigration system is the most depressing aspect of living here in the US. I guess when the system was implemented it may have had some use (such as being impartial to everyone by employing a lottery system) but these systems are pretty outdated at this point and only a leverage for political parties to throw gang signs at each other talking about how bad immigration is. I also don’t think anyone wants to solve immigration problems really, I mean even some of the nicest local people I know throw their hands up like “I don’t know” and I think it’s because immigration suffers from the same thing that many other problems suffer from and that is a lack of focus. Illegal immigration takes up so much time and space that fixing legal immigration seems like a daunting challenge and not at all worth trying. If I were a betting person I would never hedge my bets on immigration, I just need to have the time to digest and understand a lot of knowledge about how immigration helps me and my country. It’s honestly up to the Government imo to give it the proper fix it deserves but, again, why bother if it doesn’t help?

Yes, it could happen. We are a multi racial black/brown/Euro decent family in Canada. There are giant pot holes in the Canadian health care system for us as we are often not believed or assumed to be drunks or drug-heads. We know similar families who HAD to take work in America (with benefits) FOR the health care, the doctors were less likely to gatekeeper care when it was paid for. Also those who moved to New Jersey, Missouri, Wisconsin found much more racially inclusive communities (seemingly largely due to just a bigger population of different people so no one really sticks out)

My friends are working in science field and have been in US for more than 6 years but still don't know their futures. If anyone wants a stable future, don't go there. Its really not worth it even if there's good money. Other countries are friendlier and have better social facilities.

I have a different perspective… as I’ve lived in Canada since I was 2 years old (same with my wife). I’m in my early 40s and my wife is in her late 30s… the other thing is… we are of Sri Lankan decent… Tamils… BTW, I didn’t understand a thing from this interview… I’m going by what is said in the comment section.\nBut, hear me out… before you say… “Oh no… this guy has nothing in common…”\nJust so you know… I was born in Germany in 1980… my wife was born in Sri Lanka in 1985.\nWhat I noticed is all my uncles, grandparents would rave about the fact that if the war in Sri Lanka was over they would go back and live there… well… truth be told it’s been over for a while… and they go visit… but they built a new life here in Canada… and they’ve come accustomed to the luxury lifestyle here. This is something that could really help my industry if that 65,000 was raised. Everybody knows aviation is a tight industry, and with a massive labor shortage. The flight school I attend is half immigrants, mostly Japanese and Korean with a moderate minority of Europeans and Africans. The Asian students are for the most part wanting to stay in the US, despite not coming from poor nations. The opportunity for a pilot here is leagues above anywhere else bar Europe, but most will likely not even be able to maintain a work visa, let alone a green card. This also means (as pointed out) that leaving the country is hard, and they would only be allowed to fly domestic flights within the country (no flying to Canada). The issues that these highly qualified pilots could solve by being allowed to work in the US airline industry are inconceivable.\n\nIt took my mum (I was born British-American) took 9 years to become a US citizen, I was there for her first swearing in, and the UK is America’s closest ally. Imagine how difficult it is for immigrants not of such nationality.

I don't know if money and fame would be enough to overcome my distaste for American politics, religion and guns to move there. I really don't have a reason to visit there anymore. As an American Catholic. I really ache living in these depressing suburbs. I don't know what fool thinks that living alone in a big house with a lot of land alone without either a religious community or large family with a lot of kids; is a 'good' idea. It's really lonely and boring, especially if you live with your folks without a car.

I have lived in different parts of Canada my whole life, but always seem to end up in majority conservative areas. I do not consider myself a conservative. Even though I don't agree with everyone's politics, I can still live here feeling relatively safe and accepted.\nWhen things get a bit much and I feel like maybe home doesn't feel safe or match my values, I never look at the USA as my exit plan. I have considered Sweden, and Finland before anywhere else. I also wonder if it's just the sheer volume of people that Canadians aren't used to when they visit the states. Your population is massive compared to ours, and it's hard to imagine the quality of life that I have here being easy to emulate down there without drastic changes.\nThen there's my vacation and sick time at work. I’ve been to the U.S a couple of times, not in the last 15 years though. The times that I went I really enjoyed it and found people to be very friendly. Americans that I have gotten to know who live here in Canada or have been visiting, I have also found to be quite friendly.\n\nAs I type this you are talking about the importance of making sure you move to an area in the U.S where there are like minded people, like mined political views etc. that’s such a strange concept as a Canadian, because we don’t really have to think about that in terms of where we would live in Canada. \n\nMaybe you should come and visit us here in Canada? There could be certain limitations that you have become used to living in the U.S that you might start to see more clearly when those limitations are not there.

Americans are in the crapper. Many of us live on the streets. We need to be more like Japan as to border policy, and treat us first. I don’t know why it’s a big deal, many other countries have the same border policy. America isn’t inconsiderate for having them, it’s just the government already doesn’t help us live. They already take our money and force us on streets. If more immigrants came in, none of us would have a home. Economy would skyrocket greatly but in the wrong ways. More crime because I’m sure there are immigrants who really need help, but among them are also the ones who don’t follow laws. Which is why we have legal immigration, to weed out the criminals from people who need salvation.
