Canada should not only retalliate with tarrifs, but should challenge the lawfullness of American tarrifs under the GATT, the USMCA and in the US courts. The tarrifs are unlawful under American law. That said, it blows me away that Trump was so vociferous about the Lawfare that was lined up against him in 2023-24, but he doesn't see that excess use of the power of the State is wrong and immoral in this Canadian and Mexican case. Trump only knows the right of might. Threats, coercion, bullying. He doesn't otherwise distinguish between right and wrong; only about what is good for him and his ego. The Tariffs will drive very bad business outcomes in the US. Including, inflation, and lost jobs. The Stock Markets are already tanking. At this particular stage, his ego will not allow him to back off, that's my prediction. Much pain for all Americans (and obviously for Canadians) will first have to ensue. Canada must receive its spanking, and Donald will have to save face. Ultimately, he'll invent some dishonest pretense to put the genie in the bottle, while the economic damage to all sides will be severe. But ... Why would he care?
