The reason trump can get away with it is, Canada, Mexico and China export way more goods to the US than we do to them. They're going to pay a lot more over time. Trump knows he has them by the gonads.

As a European living in Canada I noticed right after we got here that quality and even availability of good European product is lacking. All the American backwards product never impressed me. Putting tariffs on other countries triggers those countries to also impose tariffs on the US and likely trade with other countries and leave US alone with its goods. Not too good. Canada, Mexico, and China putting tariffs on US will slow US economy big time, like it or not.
