Most of what was reported here is true but the housing market and rents have skyrocketed all over the world since the Chinese government F'd everyone with Covid-19. At first there were supply chain issues with all goods so businesses said we have to increase prices. Once supply issues were back to pre-Covid-19 levels businesses did not & will not lower their prices on goods because , we as a society do not take matters into our own hands and boycott products\\company's etc. Now obviously we cannot boycott all goods & services but the majority we could and that is the only thing that would cause action among companies to lower bank fees, fast food prices, grocery prices, cell plan costs etc.\n\nWith that said, you picked two of the highest and most sought after city's in CAN to rent & or try to buy a home. Although rent & home prices have really jumped all over the world in the past 3-4 years, more affordable (still not cheap) housing, compared to Toronto, Vancouver, can be found all across CAN. My sister & brother in law found an apartment to rent in Winnipeg without any difficulty or waiting. \nThey are immigrants and entered on her student Visa & he is a computer programmer. They are not struggling to eat but they have to follow a tight budget since she cannot work but 20 hours a week as a student and they have 1 kid, a car payment,utilities, cell plan, etc. They have filed for their PR and I suspect they will be approved since his job is in demand and she will graduate from College there in 4 months or so.\n\nOne thing I noticed, when my wife & I went up to get them settled in, is that the government (national & local) taxes you all pay out of the wazzoo on everything! I think the only thing that wasn't taxed was air. ? I know most of this is due to the healthcare system, because the money has to come from somewhere. Don't misunderstand, I like the CAN healthcare system better than the US's, because the insurance companies stick it to us as well, but both have their pluses and minuses.\n\nCAN does have a much easier system for immigration. If my sister & bro in law could have come here we would have been glad for them to stay with us and help them get started but the backlog is just so long to wait (10 + years). I also LOVE CAN because you uphold your laws and DEPORT illegal immigrants instead of letting them pour into the Country, by the millions each year, and the majority eventually trickle into the population illegally, who get jobs & pay no taxes (other than sales tax) no driver's licenses or vehicle insurance and get 100% free medical and hospital care anytime while legal US citizen's pay high premiums, into social security and their income taxes each year.

Came here about 8 years ago from eastern Europe. Love it in Canada! It's not perfect, but again no country is. We enjoy the easy-going people, the feeling of freedom, and access to good jobs (doing much better economically than back in the old country) and the multi-cultural atmosphere . Many thanks to kind, open-minded Canadians who have made us feel at home.

I was raised in Guelph ON, and I loved my childhood in Canada. My friends were white, Sikhs, Bosniaks and Vietnamese, I loved how diverse and welcoming Canada was. At 12 my mother had to stay in the hospital, quick admission, everything free, great doctors and free meds after. That is the Canada I remember.\nAt 16 we moved to NY, life was harder at first. I joined the US Navy to get ahead in education and move away from NY. As time went on I made a good life for myself, married and got a nice condo. My mother got married and made a good life for herself too. \nNow 22 years later, every single one of my friends from high school moved to the US 'cause they could, not one person said they wanted to live in Canada. I still consider myself a Canadian with the Canadian values *I* was raised with, but the Canada of my youth is gone it seems. Honestly make me sad.

And all these newcomers require medical care, food, education and housing. This increases economic acitivity for business and social service workers. A growing economy benefits big business and the rich but not the working class. It is the working class that is being sold out. Why hire a Canadian when I can get an Indian who will work twice as hard for half the money. The rich in the US and Canada love the situation.

TLDR; I am an person from a wartorn, oppressive country, and I unfortunately do not have many options to choose from other than Canada to have a chance for a better life.\n\nLet me tell you from the perspective of a person whose dream is to come to Canada: I know all this already, I know things are going terribly and the cost of living has gone up significantly. But the unfortunate thing is, the country I am from, is currently in turmoil. I do not fit in there as a person and hate the culture. Its incredibly corrupt with no growth. I am more western, and open minded, and my original country is a strict Islamic country. I do not fit there at all.\n\nI know Canada has all these problems, but its my only choice for a better future, I dont want to go to US because I dont wanna die, also, EU wont accept me unless I am from EU myself or speak their language which is a catch 22. Australia is also becoming a shithole. That leaves Canada and NZ. NZ doesnt have that good of job prospects and limited scope and I love Canada, always have. The weather and everything that comes with it.\n\nYes its not perfect, but I think its more about knowing that I can go back to a place, that is not dangerous for me and my future family, where I will get good care if I am stable job wise. Once I am in Canada, I will probably buy my own land and use that to have a trailer home there since they are still cheap, save my money, and probably retire in Philippines. \n\nI dont believe everyone else should do that and yes I know trailer's costs depreciates with time, unlike a house, but I dont care about that. I dont think of houses as investment and I never will nor I will participate in that practice. Everyone has a right for home.

I feel like moving as a lifelong Canadian. I love people and love culture. I don't like extremists. \n\nMy problem is simply I don't our government is ethical nor caring to it's citizens, and as far as immigrants go, I am absolutely all for it with a reasonable rate without displacement or a negative sum on people that have built families here already. You can't just say we want to help and not give one thought about implications whatsoever. \n\nWhere I live you can't add thousands of people without thinking about making roards wider or more busses.\n\nWe don't look like idiots, we are. Unfortunately our fellow citizens will fight tooth and nail because they don’t want to pay taxes . For some nations Canada turned into nightmare by spoof call attack. Many people died or killed. Drug problem is another big issue in Canada and USA but fortunately gun violence is less than US. Healthcare getting worse everyday. Bad neighborhood experience which destroyed my health for life mostly because of spoof call attack. Bad policing which killed many innocent people. Woke laws and culture which marginalized men who are driving force of society. Very weird working experience. Work for yourself or get enslaved by another employer that's why people would love to work for government. Housing prices skyrocketing in big cities and there is no foreseeable future for its remedy. Cold weather for six month of year and at the end COVID force closure killed many of people and hospitalization was so bad. Anywhere there was no hospitalization people life were saved. There is no open market like many countries which are backed by government to buy goods in reasonable price for low income people. Very restricted laws for driver license. Life in Canada is far from normal kills you or make you disable for life without getting you paid. Now I disabled for couple of years and I'm outside of Canada and just my family saved my life because I couldn't work because of disability due to spoof call attack which cause severe peripheral neuropathy. Even there is no any protocol for this illness to get cured and forced me to see many MDs and cost me lots of money. Just stay away from Canada which is a nightmare and my sickness cost me not be able to protect my family and died because of that. Canada is a hell

Inflation is higher than what they say.. real estate prices are out of touch with the actual wages and salaries.. cost of food is unbelievable… rent is ridiculous.. Healthcare is going through crisis… Getting MRI takes ages.. So now they wanna bring 500k in the midst of all this ? It is going to screw us more .. The old it hasn't touched my life is a typical American response. Until it does. There were almost 2 mass shootings a day (630+) in the US in 2023. Back in the 70s and 80s, I spent a lot of time in the US due to my involvement in sports. Today, you couldn't pay me to step across the border. Ya, all gotta get your shit together. Fascism is knocking at your door. And it's migrating north. Canadians are better educated, and with our diversity, the average Canadian has a deeper understanding of the world. We are a global village unlike the US melting pot. It's a sad statement to make, but the world doesn't love America, just your money. Way back, I loved going to the Sabers games. It was a great night out, and only a quick hop across the border. Those days are long gone, and it breaks my heart.

In the past 2 years - I have spent 3 months in Toronto, and last year, 3 months in Montreal...and it is like the Tale of Two Cities! In Toronto, I stayed at a friend's off the park that abuts Queens St, and Dundas St. on the far side. I barely got a good night's sleep - from the constant wailing of Sirens at ALL Hours of the night/early morning! I witnessed several incidents of random violence - including on the trolly cars, and many of them involving homeless Indigenous people ...who were historically shit-on by Canada! In comparison to US Cities - Toronto minded me of problem-plagued SF, Seattle, and Portland. The Density factor reminded me of NYC, minus the Positive Street savvy that New Yorkers have in spades! I did meet some very nice people, but overall - Torontonians were uptight, concerned about money all the time, and sometimes - just downright rude! Fast-Forward to Montreal. I stayed in Le Plateau...renting a room for 3 months. Lovely House-mates - One Turkish/Polish Woman, and an Iranian Man - both were quirky, and Delightful! My rent was very decent, and my Host showed me all the affordable places to eat, swim for free, free Yoga in the parks...within 2 days, I felt at Home! It was 3 days before I even noticed a siren! Drivers stoped for pedestrians, and as it was summer - the bike-lanes were full of bike riders! The Green Spaces were plentiful, and Parc Mount Royal is a Terrestrial Paradise! Were there some social issues? - of Course! French being the official language, the Quebecois are a VERY Proud, and defiant lot! That was difficult at first, and then...learning some history of Quebec, you begin to understand their irascible defenses! There was some homelessness (a Fraction of what I see in the US, and Toronto!), and prices are creeping-up (the common complaint!), and there was a lot of construction, and road repairs - as Quebec is NOT a wealthy part of Canada, overall. In short - I miss Montreal DEEPLY! Toronto? - I have a good friend there, and I hope to see a few of the folks I met there, Again. Travel Impressions are mainly subjective, but I know where my heart, and affection lie!

As a Canadian, I love immigration. As a renter though, our government failed us so hard. They defunded our housing in hopes that the private market would pick up the slack. It didn't, then because of our economy/demographics are we had to massively increase immigration. It broke a system that was already crumbling. Now a whole generation of people will never be able to afford to buy their own home many of us can't even afford the rent. Is it that surprising the majority of our legislators are landlords?

It's refreshing seeing Canadians' opinion on a national issue in the comment section. Just acknowledging that they face a problem and how it should be tackled, no aggressive xenophobia, no racism. Muslims don’t see the part they play In alienating people. Saying all these programmed phrases like alhamdulilah and the whole litany makes you sound like automatons who don’t think for yourselves. If it’s so important to you, you can be Muslim in your heart. You don’t need to be “visible Muslims“. People who love God don’t have to constantly say “praise God”. I’m talking about real introspection where you honestly look at yourselves and your community. Islam is In desperate need of reform. You should be at the forefront of that, but instead you are just playing out the old program which has failed in every Muslim country. First and foremost, you are human beings. I have visited the United States many, many MANY, MANY times over the years. I've loved every single visit. The people are warm and lovely....some of your scenery and historic things were more than a joy to behold Would I ever want to move there ? Not even for a second. In fact, sadly, my husband won't even go back for a visit anymore. This is sad to me, but I understand where he is coming from. \nWas sad to say good-bye to our dearest friends who moved to the US, because the job pay and promotion was impossible to say no to. They lasted 2 months and settled for less pay and no promotion to come back home. They found it so weird, that all the new friends they made, thought they were freaks because they didn't own guns. The final straw was when they learned these people were packing when they came to summer barbeques. That was the final straw, and they high-tailed it home. \nIn recent times, a country run by someone I see as a loose cannon, psychopath...makes it a most emphatic NO.

look students pays for thier tuition without government support, then they will work double time to make it happen, then after they are educated enough then canada can benefit with educated individuals, those who cannot make it will be deported or end up thier student visa, its a win win for canada, but for now i heard that the labor market in canada is flooded with students, from restaurants to hotels; manufacturing, love the young educated cheap workers. canada will not stop this because they need the population to grow and they benefit this a lot. This comparable to H1B visa in USA but the difference is those visa holder is paid accordingly when they are hired in the USA. So the US end up getting the best people to come to thier country because only the cream of the crop or the best are the only ones that can get H1B visa. not talented enough or having police record no H1B is a fact

“Most productive”. I believe so… I went to school with some people from Indian and they were incredible, very smart and studious. I loved them… but we should NEVER forget to put Canadians first. I know a lot of moms with older kids who are sending their children to study in Europe or in the US, because they can’t get a spot in Canadian universities. They were all born and raised here… :( Canadian are becoming “international students” abroad themselves because they can’t find a space here.
