Because they know even if they cross illegally they will find jobs in the construction industry.. the companies of America hire them and then pay them low wages which works out for the companies because paying with cash or 1099 tax form they are not obligated to taxes, retirements, 401k, no insurance. A few years back a company was hired to remove tree limbs from power lines so they went to central America and brought back workers for the labor. It went live on the news and was asked why wasn't Americans offered the opportunity to get a job doing the work.. as soon as the news report came out it was just as quickly removed from the airways. Canadian here, and this video is right on the money for some of the most frustrating things about Canada! \n\nOur proudest achievement is our healthcare system, but up until recently, the government has been choking it little by little. Making it so difficult for any Doctor/Nurse to even consider finding work here (and making it impossible to afford getting a medical degree) because you are literally doing it for the love of the game at this point. \n\nEven if you become a specialist in a specific field (which pays really well compared to most careers here) it is unlikely any hospital will hire you. Our hospitals are only interested in making profits by pushing painkillers on Canadians, rather than hiring medical professionals to help fix them. If you become a family Doctor, it is a bit better, because you can open your own practice. But kiss your social life goodbye if you do! The most annoying part of this problem is some people blame all this on the fact that we have healthcare and assume a private American system would be better. Where the real problem is we need more workers and funding into our healthcare to make it better. Not making lives harder for poorer Canadians!\n\nWeirdly enough our Tax system issue didn't stand out as a problem to me until I left Canada and see how taxes are marked elsewhere! It blew my mind that I didn't have to do math when I visited another country and the way we advertise wages is purposely deceptive! In Ontario, we succeeded in getting a $14 hour minimum wage (only in Ontario and maybe one other province). Which sounded amazing until you realize that's $14 without tax... To compare, I was incredibly lucky in Toronto where I found a place for 750 a month and was earning $16 an hour. Sounded like more than enough for the cost of living, but after taxes I was pretty much putting more than half my monthly income in rent. On top of that I had to pay for student loans and other bills. \n\nBottom line, if you are wanting to move to Canada for our beautifully scenic environments, free healthcare, and a stable job? \n\nMove to Finland.

And my life turned upside down this Friday by illegal immigrants here in Louisiana. They ran a red light, smash my car, totaled it. While running from border patrol and customs. I counted eight people running out of the vehicle and not one gave two shits to check on me, even though I was injured. Seven of them got away the only one they caught was a 14 year old Honduran child that claimed amnesty. So vehicle which they stole, which had stolen license plate, and apparently was full of stolen tools all was seized. The owners will be lucky if they get anything back since it is being held as evidence. I was told by My Attorney chances are my insurance will not pay me in full for my vehicle. Also, I only have a few payments on my car left, and I’m forced to pay it even though now I have no vehicle to get to work, because all my equity is tied up in it, funny thing is I recognize this kid from one of the jobsites down the street. They literally beat me in a bid on. Mind you only buy $400 differences I’m having to pay taxes it’s a joke when you say these people take jobs and no one else wants thing is it’s not jobs no one else wants it’s jobs that have become jobs. No one wants because of the pay continues to fall prices continue to increase, everyone thinks he’s illegal immigrants make no money on these jobsites most of them have nicer vehicles and live in nicer places than the guys I know. The Democrats who are used to vote for because I thought they were for the workingman have completely switched. Their allegiance is to the large corporations that just want to drive down competition and raise their profit margins. They don’t care about America. I agree, I was born and raised here, unless you speak the language, have a good education, its puts you behind the 8 ball if you want to stay here. Why? Because the cost of living is too high, Why? So unless you are prepared to work two or three jobs, don't even think about it, because now its next to impossible to do unless you have someone supporting you on your climb to the top. In Canada we need health care workers and that could be nurses, doctors, health care aids, psw's, dsw's and physiotherapists, in some provinces they give free courses to get these jobs and you end up getting good wages like min. 25.00 per hour to start and all the hours you can handle, that means if you work 60 hours a week, you make 1500 a week, now that you can survive on, I know this for a fact because a friend of mine just went through the course and now she is set for life, that was a PSW course, its all up to you, if you want it bad enough, you can have it all. I live in Vancouver & it is progressively getting more and more unsafe. But- it's our wild drug problems and local government failing to properly prosecute crime. There are many articles calling out how violent criminals are here. Our judges are consistently letting out violent criminals on bail and they keep reoffending. I feel for the cops who keep arresting criminals, only to arrest them again a month later while knowing they'll be seeing them again soon. We don't have a huge number of evil criminals or gang war in the streets, but a small consistent number of drug addicts detached from reality committing random acts of violence. \n\nAgreed on our tap water is fantastic. I remember the first time I drank tap water in Florida I was shocked at the awful taste. \n\nLastly- Canada does need to get better laws to protect citizens from monopolies. As someone who lived across America and in Montreal and Vancouver, the cost of living there isn’t worth the pay disparity compared to other major cities. I’ve had the same company send me an offer $30k less to work the same job in Montreal instead of Vancouver because of the cheaper cost of living. And there is one important fact that you missed in this documentary. It is Indian(racial) people taking advantage of these young India people like us not Canadians! However, there are some mitigating factors such as the high ratings of the network quality and stability for all major cell carriers despite wide swaths of our geography having little to no population and rugged topography. It's not an easy country to cover properly or reliably without it being expensive. Though Canadian telecom and cableco profits are through the roof, as are those of the big 5 banks. Did someone pay you to perpetuate the LIE that Healthcare in Canada comes out of people's taxes? That's certainly the impression that you have created. BE CLEAR. Each Province has its own universal healthcare which is funded - NOT BY TAXES - by a premium paid similar to regular insurance (except there isn't anyone skimming profits off the top). For example - the Ontario Heath Insurance Plan - OHIP. As a pensioner, my OHIP premium in 2014 was $98 per year. In the US I pay 12 x 167 = 2004 - over 20 times the amount AND I have to pay the first $4,000 of cost myself. Yes, you have to WAIT after moving to Canada before you get full coverage. As a Canadian, if I came back to Canada I would have to wait 6 months before my health insurance kicks in. BUT if this were not the case sick people from all over the planet would flock to Canada for free medicine. As for the Doctor shortage that is CREATED by the Canadian Medical Association limiting the positions available in Med schools. Nobody loses their house and goes bankrupt in Canada because a family member gets sick compared to about 700, 000 Americans per year who suffer that fate. AND no children die in Canada because their parents didn't have Healthcare. As for immediacy of service - it depends on how serious the medical problem is. Few, if any, people die in Canada because they were seriously ill and were told to go home and take Advil.

Most of the land is crown land, ( even land designated for logging ) the government allows you temporary camping privileges of up to 2 weeks on that land (you can not homestead on it) , the rest is reserved for agriculture or for First Nations. Only 5% is available for freehold housing accommodation , which is why Canada is in a housing crunch. The availability of livable land is so scarce because the land that was available when the country was born was given away to homesteaders. That meant that the land was given away in large parcels. Now it’s almost impossible to make those parcels into smaller parcels without doing what is called a “land assembly” . A land assembly means a developer buys a sum of large parcels , then applies for a permit to sub divide into a new subdivision consisting of smaller houses. Even then the smaller houses that are built will still cost a small fortune, because the developer and all the people involved take a sizeable profit from the sale of the homes.

Well, I guess that most families from Asian counties live together and share space so they will be able to afford homes. I guess that we should educate Canadians that they should not expect to be able to afford rent or owning a home unless you stay with your family and all live together. See, problem solved. At a time when Internet was at its infancy and not available to all, I had researched, applied (snail mail), and came to Canada in 1995 as a foreign student and attended a public college for 3+ years, including co-op. This was 27 years ago and it surprises me that with the wealth of information at our disposal today, there are folks who are still being taken for a ride. People need to smarten up, but often times, I find that it’s the shortcut attitude of many which allows a system like this to exists. I feel sad for these students and their parents, but if you truly want to have a full-fledged Uni / College experience in Canada, then stay away from these for-profit private colleges; apply to a school of repute.

I would like to thank CBC Fifth Estate for their initiative to uncover the trauma these students go through. This is only one cornerstone of the story. Fifth Estate need to dig deeper and come up with part 2 to look in to our Federal Government policy regarding issuing Student Visa from India. Why these so called for profit colleges / agencies only targeting students from India and not from any other countries ? The Student VISA process is different for students from other countries. It’s our government who is exploiting these students and playing with their hopes and dreams.

I was a professor in the US and Canada, and I'm now teaching in Asia. This is shameful. The world of education has become a for-profit business. From the Woke to Postmodernism, fraudulent ideologies, to this sham recruitment process, education is so badly in need of reform.

Small businesses are hard to keep because everything is so expensive. I've never experienced racism in my life like I did out west, not just Alberta but also Northwest Territories and Manitoba. \n\nOn top of that they want everyone to be gay and not believe in God, they push the agenda so hard in the schools, they institutionalize and confuse your kids. If you believe anything different they literally hate you. The children are hypersexualized...teenage girls looking like they're 30 year old drag queens. They bully kids so badly in school, especially boys. Parents have no time to get involved because they're busying working multiple jobs to pay for their 4000 dollar mortgage, husband and wife barely see each other. And because they're not involved the children have no respect for their elders or teachers. the teachers don't care to get involved like they used to because everything's a liability...a problem. We had a 13 year old girl call a male teacher a pedophile for pushing a little girl on the swing. He quit on the spot, because now he's worried for his career. Kids have no shame anymore. \n\nIF YOU WANT QUALITY OVER QUANTITY (WHICH YOU MIGHT NEVER GET), DON'T COME HERE! or, Come here and send all your money home but don't educate your kids here unless you have enough money to put them in private schools and there are good private schools. If the only thing you want out of your life is freedom, freedom to just be left alone and no one hounding you...you like being alone. Then, that you can have here. \n\nIf you are from a colonized country we are all slaves to the system!

Guys, my opinion will be controversial, I apologise! You gloss through infrastructure like it is easy to build - efficient train tracks, trains, maintained roads, reliable transportation systems (foundation of a any economy), Security forces, financial services, maybe health facilities etc. Almost every equipment you use have been invented and distributed (earn profits too) by the West to provide a high standard of living. Please acknowledge and appreciate the West. I'm Nigerian, so I know the benefits of living abroad. Hate the racism but their services are impeccable.
