For 2 decades Canadian cities have had a condo building boom (for non-North Americans, a condo(minium) is a building built by developers with the intent of selling off the apartments individually, instead of the whole building being one large rental property - that's a rental building) with the rather strange peculiarity that the bast majority of those condos are small - studios, one bedroom and one bedroom + den (in North American real estate linguo, a den is a small room without a window). There are some two bedroom apartments, and three+ bedroom apartments are very rare. One of the reasons for this is a general mindset that apartments are for singles, young childless couples and retired empty-nesters, while families are supposed to live in a house of their own. Another reason is that some archaic building codes restrict the type of apartments developers can fit in a building. The result of this is that in a country which certainly does not lack space, there are now tons of small apartments (the demand for which has been going down in many areas), but it's too expensive to afford a larger space to buy (whether a house or one of those rare large apartments) once you want to start a family.

A majority of Canadians are NOT home owners. That's a bad reading of the data. A majority of people LIVE in OWNER-OCCUPIED homes. That means if adult children are living with their parents, both the children and parents are counted as home owners. Or in my case, I own my home but my friend lives with me. She and I are both counted as owning homes when only I do. Most Canadians do not own homes.

If Canada uses it's wisdom to choose a leader with an aptitude for economics, and behaves with the collectivistic humility we are known for, perhaps we will weather this storm and come out stronger on the other side. When making decisions from fear or anger, Canadians become individualistic and do our entire nation a major disservice by destroying any chance of using this crisis to propel our way out of the pit we are currently in. We need to avoid pointing fingers because for decades cowardly and self-serving decision-making have led us here. Never forget that the new immigrant delivering your food isn't your enemy - the con artist/felon trying to steal our resources and autonomy is.

CANADA MUST develop those more REMOTE areas of the nation. Its population is essentially present in an area that resembles the shape of Chile, leaving the majority of the nation extremely underdeveloped. These infrastructure issues are the kinds of things you hear about when discussing the DRC etc. Whatever one may say about the huge problems with Russia's infrastructure, AT LEAST they have developed those more remote areas and have settled population centers in some of the most difficult climatic environments on Earth

As someone living in Canada... I actually don't feel much of the things mentioned in the video. Sure, wages are not growing as fast as it can, but as someone who managed to purchase a home *before* the bubble started to expand, I'm living steady right now.\n\nWhat is REALLY causing a large part of the social and economic issues is actually the fact that provinces are NOT expanding new towns and cities in the millions of kilometers that needs to grow. Everyone is moving into cities, including refugees and new immigrants, which is driving up local prices and demand for everything. A few years ago, there were literally news of townships outside of the major cities offering houses and land for $50 per acre if people move to those towns and live there. \n\nCanada's biggest (heh) advantage is how much land it has. It's biggest weakness is how little comparative population it has. The worst problem is the concentration of population in like 6 keys cities throughout the entire country. If more people who complain about housing or social issues were willing to move outside of the major cities, they wouldn't have those problems.

Quick note for non-Canadians (or just Canadians who don't know). When he says a majority of the nation are homeowners that's kind of not what the data says. It defines homeowner as someone who lives in a house which is owner occupied. So for example, an adult child who can't afford to rent their own place and is stuck living in their parents basement is a homeowner. I can tell you right now they don't feel like a homeowner.

The difference between Canada and Spain is that they don’t have a sovereign currency. With debt dominated in the Euro they couldn’t as easily print their way out of the problem. I’d be willing to bet that the government inflates the dollar away before they allow a major housing crash or long term decline. Either way we’re cooked ?

You should be more concerned with median income or statistics that omit the top 1% as that is the reality the vast majority are living. In 2021, Canada was top 5 in the world in median disposable income. Finally, the US’s financial services and healthcare are big contributors to the US GDP while both have their problems (financial services don’t make the lives of the general public any better and US healthcare is incredibly inefficient). So, comparing the GDP of these countries is not a fair comparison.

There are millions in India who are salivating at the idea of moving into Canada. They could easily flood the local cultures with a majority and seeing how they behave in India it's not something I would wish to see in Canada. Cut it out already!!!

Canada and the US share the longest border in the world. It's not just illegal immigration coming from Canada but the US as well. Both countries need to co operate to stop this. whats happening is people are coming here, mostly Indians, are coming to Canada as students... then when their student visa is over they claim asylum... when their asylum is eventually denied which can take a while they walk across the border and do it all over again... Im not so sure of the info coming across. Ive seen staggering numbers of immigrants coming north from the US into Quebec and Ontario for a number of years. Quebec had to set up shelters and programs to accommodate how many were coming up into Canada. Watching the RCMP helping them come into Canada, taking their luggage and guiding them Those officers should be charged with being an accomplice to a crime.. that would stop the police from helping bring them in... We have our own housing shortage that needs to be addressed for existing Canadians who are struggling. I'm glad we are taking a pause and redifining the structure of how and who we receive into Canada. Until we sort out the housing crisis, which is in every major city, there simply aren't enough homes to help those in need and address newcomers who aren't financially self sufficient. If those immigrating to another country, they should provide their new country with their own financial means of support, or be of a profession that is in demand, the sooner they get jobs and pay into the system, the better.
