25%%-0% tariffs with the US gaining by 25% and Canada losing by 25% would have been ridiculous. Trudeau deserves many congratulations by hitting back with retaliatory 25% tariffs vs the US.

Oh, the solution is pretty simple, as is the reverse of tariffs. Most of Canadians savings are poured directly or through investment funds into Wall Street to increase US investment. The main export of US is bonds and stocks. Let the Canadian government introduce a tax on any investment on its residents on any asset in US currency or us denominated. I want to stick around to fix Canada, but I think it's too far gone. We have too many socialists/communists in power and they're not getting voted out any time soon. These are issues not unique to Canada. Most people here in Canada don't realize this. Housing is a huge issue, and needs to be fixed. But business investment into Canada is increasing. We won't see improvement overnight, but we are marching in the right direction. \nThe tariff threat is the only looming thing that can really hold us back. The reason real estate prices have gone 300% but incomes only 100% is because of low interest rates. If you factor in carrying costs, the numbers aren't as extreme. The challenge now is that interest rates have increased to stave off inflation generated primarily during the covid years. While this has somewhat abated, real estate carrying costs remain elevated and price growth has stagnated, while the Canadian dollar has fallen, effectively resulting in reduced housing valuations (in US dollar terms). Can we ride this out until incomes catch up? Will productivity increases promised by leading political challengers (election coming this year) move the needle? Are tariffs and 51st state rhetoric just a negotiating tactic and bluster, or something real? Nobody knows, but we will find out..

Canada wont go to sell in EU or China it's over seas way to long and most of the times still has to go thru the US lol it's to costly for one, and EU just wont cover all the cost, forget the logistic nightmare. I can envision a situation where Trump targets Australia next with his aggressive policies. In response, we should consider implementing a boycott against American products and establish tariffs on imports from the United States. Update 3/2/25 Canada and Mexico caved to Trump's demands and are giving him what he wants, the stop the flow of illegal aliens and drugs into the US on the Mexico/US/Canada borders. Canada and Mexico now joins Columbia, Venezuela, and Panama for countries bending the knee to Trump's demands. There is something Canada and Mexico don't get, Trump put tariffs because of the illegal trade that comes across the borders, illegal immigrants, gangs and drugs and because he thinks, right or wrong, that Mexico and Canada don't do enough to stop it. Now Mexico and Canada put tariffs on the US, because the US puts tariffs on them, they don't even try to defend their position or debunk what trump is saying about the illegal goods coming in. Trump must be right then, no?

I am not really a fan of the tariffs Trump is imposing like lightning with Canada. I do think they should stop the walk thought to Us boarder security. I think they should however be an equal partner in securing their boarder. I don’t believe it is as much of a fentanyl thing but maybe I don’t know enough details in that.

All other countries should unite to put tariffs against US goods

Tariffs are consumer taxes on imports, collected from your own citizens, whenever they buy products or services from other countries. Trump said he would reduce taxes. He told voters other countries paid for Tariffs. They Don’t. They just lose sales, due to diminished demand. Tariffs are another way for the US government to tax its own people and reduce its trade deficit . It’s probably about time. USA has had a trade deficit every year, since 1970.

Retaliation tariffs. That's a ridiculous idea. You don't win a tariff war when you're the country that has a trade surplus. In 2023, Canada imported approximately $431.2 billion worth of goods from the United States, while the United States imported approximately $354.3 billion worth of goods from Canada. That's going to hurt Canada a whole lot more than it'll hurt us.

Canada and Mexico can make sure their borders are secure but instead they want a tariff war with the US

I’ve read many comments urging Canada to reduce its exposure to the us. It’s reasonable but that doesn’t happen overnight. Refineries, for example, are custom built - they can’t process all crudes. They’d cost several billion to build and at least 3-5 years; plus, you need railways and port infrastructure to ship out oil or its byproducts. This should have been started in 2017 (trump’s 1st term). In the short term, free trade zones within Canada and Mexico may alleviate some of the tariffs.

DW comes from Germany, so don't expect fair reporting. However, this is so simple to understand. We buy from them much more than they buy from us. What it means, is that they can't tariff us as much as we can tariff them. The ´war´is lost before it began. They simply can't win it. Actually, I'm surprised, they even try because it doesn't make any sense.

The reality of the situation is that while Canada’s retaliatory tariffs will hurt the US a little, Trump’s tariffs hurt Canada a lot! Right now we’re in a moment where Canadian politicians of all stripes need to placate the public’s demand for retaliation, however no matter who the next PM is, they will quickly and quietly be working to undo whatever factors led to this situation. That will mean acquiescing to Trump’s border demands among other concessions. One would be forgiven for thinking Trudeau should have just gone along with them in the first place and spared Canada the pain.

The only thing that will get Trump to pull in his horns is for countries to respond with counter-tariffs that will HURT Americans big time. Trump said they don't need our energy. Let's shut down hydro electricity sales to the US and allow millions of residences and industry go dark in winter and wait for Trumps call to negotiate. The US NEEDS Canadian resources and we should use that to our advantage.

Illegal crossings and fentanyl (less than 1% coming from Canada) are just excuses to justify the tariffs. His end goal is to bring revenue to the US by means of foreign taxation.
