I personally think its rude to speak your mother tongue, if English is your second language and trying to impose it on other people. I would venture to suggest that part of the problem is one of language barrier? He's been in the US for 15 years and he's been in Canada for 2, and even now, he doesn't speak or understand a word of English! If he desires to live in Quebec later, he will also need to speak French? He really won't go far in any English/French language country, if, after all that time, he hasn't mastered the most basic terms in anything but Spanish!

I live in Houston Texas. People often say that Mexicans take jobs that no one else will do. That may have been true at some point but now that we are overwhelmed by the illegal immigrants every business only hires Mexicans that speak perfect Spanish and not so perfect English. So blacks, whites and other cultures are stuck! If I wanted to live in Mexico I would move there and learn their language why do they refuse to learn ours? I love every Mexican that I have met. People who can't speak the national language shouldn't be moving to another country especially not illegally. I can't feel sorry for this guy. I have zero issues with immigrants seeking a better life in another country, being one myself, but a few things about some immigrants baffle me always. How do people expect to be welcomed and accepted by the folks of another country when they don't even bother to learn the language. This guys been in the US for 15 years and can't speak any English? Its not the worse case , I've seen people live far longer 30 or 40 years in countries like the UK where I'm from and they cannot speak a word of English because they choose to live in a self imposed microcosm of the country they came from. \nThey have to understand that it's very insulting to native people and citizens of a country that you want to be treated as a citizen yourself but won't make efforts to adapt to the language and cultures of the country you have chosen to live in, I cannot think of a better way to ostracize yourself than failing to learn the language.\n It would be far easier to have sympathy for your cause if you are able to show that you have integrated and intend to be a citizen of that country 100% and the easiest way is to be able to communicate your cause yourself.

I agree with a lot of the things said in the comments. He didn't properly look into what is required for refugee status and came illegally so shouldn't receive preferential treatment. However, his not speaking English...where could he go to learn as an illegal immigrant? And likely he had to work long hours to save money for lawyers, etc. The language thing to me seems a bit harsh. He may even know passable English, but the reporters may have wanted the interviews to go more smoothly and so spoke in his native language.

If you want to fit in here and make it more easily, you need to speak English. And they have free classes all over America that teach English to people from South America.
