When you think about why a country would keep its doors open to immigration, you can kind of picture the life as an immigrant in that country. Though Canada is not a coutry that's been around for a year or two, population still at only around 38 million, they still need a lot of labor force and tax payers to further develop as a country and maintain the current level of welfare I assume. As everything is give and take in life, what you look for in immigration is well matched with what you can offer as an immigrant, everything works out fine. If you want leisure and take advantage of their civilization only, however, you either need to have enough wealth to cover or contributed to the society so much that you deserve a life of those that have already contributed building that country to the level that it is at. I think that only makes sense.

I have been in Canada for more than 20 years. The cost of living is very high. Housing in Toronto is very expensive, it is better in small towns.\n\nThe most important thing is to come here as a skilled worker. The Canadian immigration website has all the information. \n\nLife overall in Canada is not bad. The government really takes care of the people. Schools are free, and so is health care. The unemployment rate is very low. If you want to work, you will get a job.\n\nMy advice especially for those who are doing fairly well in their countries to stay. I think it is more suitable for young skilled people and those with young children. \n\nWe should also start paying taxes in our countries to develop infrastructure and start holding our governments accountable.\n\nThe young lady in the video is a bid overdramatic. Pricing is not a Canadian specific problem. Look at anywhere people actually want to live in the US, it's essentially the same. LA and NY are just as expensive as Toronto. Only difference is there's less people in Canada that live in rural states like Iowa where everything is cheap because there isn't major city for hundreds of thousands of miles. 1. Canada's immigration is primarily skilled labour. Non- skilled labour is imported mostly from the Carribean countries especially Jamaica and you have to leave every year and come back in the next. So, that can be disruptive, but I've met Jamaican's who've been on those programs and done well as well as those who haven't.\n2. If you come to Canada illegally utakipata. Be prepared to hustle for long.\n3. Since Covid everything has become very expensive especially housing. \n4. The videos you've shown of people sleeping outside is because of an increase in the influx of refugees wanting to come to Canada. Refugee shelters are allocated money in the budget for what the Govt estimates will be the number of refugees they'll take in, but there's been an influx lately.\n- A point to note though, ALL refugees Canada received from Ukraine had jobs within 2 months. Why? very skilled labour.\n- Canada's refugee policy is much more lenient than in the US and thus most refugees have been coming to Canada even from the US. The truth is, it's too expensive to do business in Canada and we're not making use of the incredible talent we have here (largely due to the government). As mentioned in the video, we need high capital investments to get businesses up and running. We have so many investment firms like Canada Pension Plan, Ontario Teacher's Pension that have billions but they're choosing to invest in businesses abroad because government regulations are not supportive - that's why so many move to the states. In my opinion, no regrets whatsoever if you do it for the children. Especially in a place like Canada where life is safer than the US. Also, l will choose Canadian education for my kids any day over Nigerian education. These types of families make sure to immerse their kids in both cultures, so as not to be strangers in their native land. They take the children back home for visits once a year, or once every two years. Once kids are grown, graduated and working, most often than not, these Nigerian immigrant parents go back to Nigeria to settle down.\nI mean, what's not to like?

I am an immigrant from South Africa here in Edmonton since June of 2023. What the brother is saying is true. Canadians make no room for the human element in the workplace/environment. Everything is based on productivity at the expense of your humanity. They also treat workers as very expendable and disposable. The fact that they import so many foreign workers to do certain jobs is perhaps a reason why born Canadians no longer want to put up with the exploitation (I don't know if this is the true reason though).\n\nCanada is very convenient, and public services and infrastructure are amazing compared with South Africa. But the rest of the culture is very sterile. Tim Hortons, Starbucks, and Ice Hockey are considered cultural identities. Maybe the older generations had a distinctive culture, but most Canadians of today's are only interested in consumerism and the car lifestyle. If you are looking for people with warmth and depth, you will most likely find it with fellow immigrants (and maybe the poor and marginalized communities of Canada).\n\nCanada is a very safe country, and South Africa may not be worth it for me to return to. But the strongest element I thought for coming to Canada was that people here appreciated life and each other. This is not true. Canada is 'stable and happy' because the people are intoxicated by the comfort that material wealth provides the individual (despite all their complaints and problems, most Canadians still lead very comfortable and easy lives). Take away their comfort and materialism, and they won't know who they are. They won't know how to stand together either since they have been so strongly conditioned to live for themselves as individuals.\n\nCanadians are known for their politeness and friendliness, and this is true. But there is a big difference between politeness and kindness (and being genuine). Canadians are not kind.\n\nMy opinion is obviously limited and biased. Unless you have a strong community to support you here, it will be a lonely and alienating experience.

So how are these asylum seekers come? Do they come from the country that they are looking for asylum and they are denied shelter? Then the trouble is how this claimants are processed, there should be a way to firm up the needed resources or simply there's no room in Canada. If what they are doing is coming to the country and once at the port of entry they claim for asylum we need to take a serious look at how lenient we are in accepting just anyone who comes by automatically granting asylum. That should stop. There should be no illegal immigrants in Canada. Those who are here illegally should be sent back. There is enough trouble now to handle this. Maybe in the future, not now.

Life in Nigeria is only decent for those living affluently in Lekki, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, certain areas of Ikeja and Abuja. Outside of that, life for everyday Nigerians is crap. Water & electricity (NEPA) are highly unreliable & intermittent, so fuel-powered generators are a necessity for living everyday life per household or per apartment in apartment complexes. The banking & government systems are notoriously sluggish, taking weeks and months to process simple paperwork such as drivers licenses, passports, certificates, banking transaction reversals, you name it. Bribery is a daily occurrence EVERYWHERE. Police (if you can call them that, mostly untrained thugs) detain & extort motorists and/or people innocently going about their daily lives, just for the money. Many many many people disappear mysteriously without ever being seen again by family or friends. Lots of inter-racial discrimination and animosity between the three major tribes that make up Nigeria… Yoruba, Igbo & Hausa-Fulani. The federal & state governments are horribly corrupt, bordering on dictatorship. Elections are undemocratic, to say the least, with thugs threatening voters at voting booths. I could go on?\n\nThis is why many Nigerians with any amount of wealth live in diaspora, whether that be the UK, Canada, the USA, Europe, or wherever. And, yeah, be prepared for everything being structured & organized in these countries, especially in North America. The cost of living is definitely higher to pay for a higher quality of living. That’s the difference between a developed country vs a country, such as Nigeria, that’s developing or considered ‘third-world’. Unfortunately, here in Canada we cannot account for the last 8 years under our current administration, which has gone rogue & is out of control, causing high inflation, interest rates and housing and cost of living to soar. This is not normal conditions even to those of us natural-born here. So, we feel for immigrants who have arrived in good faith in the last few years. Hello brothers and sisters I’m seeing a problem here. The interest rate in the late 1970s and early 1980s interest rate was 12-18%. People\nComing now are in MUCH better financial condition then people who came then with nothing. The difference is two main things: many new immigrants don’t have the same drive and motivation that previous immigrants in terms of sacrifices such as not driving a mustang, but they also didn’t just settle for labour jobs, they used their brains and began business along side labour. Second thing is, the immigrant wants to see the result before putting in the work. If after getting out of the horrible conditions of India and coming to Canada, a country loaded with opportunities, you still have difficulties then you need to change your expectations and work ethic to match, if they don’t then don’t complain. Cost of living is not the issue, it is the false expectation that they give themselves. To be quite honest with you it takes most immigrants one generation not 5-10 years, so either start working smarter or wait to have this reflection of what Canada is like until you have lived here for 50 years.

Many immigrants find the first few years difficult because of the job ethics. The job ethics here in Canada is quite different from Nigerian with a laidback background. In Canada you work for every cent and it has really worked for them and some of us. I have employed so many Africans especially Nigerians who thought I am mean because they have to work for every penny. You are not paid to come and have a chitchat at work or spend 5 hours on something that could take you 3 hours to do. I will say if you can't change your work ethics and try to integrate into the Canadian system please stay back in your country. I have also seen people who have been clouded with that high life they lived back home and find it difficult to Start at the bottom. Even if you are living a good life in Nigeria, Canada is a better place to live if you can unlearn some things and relearn other things.\nAnd is there systemic racism? The answer is YES. If our leaders treat us right, 80 percent of our people won't leave their country. Let's hold our government responsible not the north American government or their people.

Age is an important factor while considering immigration. For folks less than 30, Canada will offer you a great opportunity if you are focus and knows how to develop your skills or career. For Folks that have worked the better part of their lives in their home country, say from age 40, DO NOT sell all you have worked for back home and bring the money to Canada, the system here is designed to swallow all that money in a short time. For these group of people do not immigrate because you want a better life for your children, but your primary focus will be what can I do in a short possible time that can earn you money to survive this economy. Housing is the most important factor and do a lot of research on where to settle that will fit your income and provide better job. Also make sure you are re-trainable. Be prepared and that includes all members of your family. Wife and husband and all their adult children must be ready to hit the ground running and find whatever job within a short possible time. Paying bills become a less burden if all members of the family are contributing their own share. It is not like back home where the man is the brad winner and takes care of others responsibilities.

This may be accurate from presentation part, but see the actual reality, if canada is that much attractive for skilled immigrants, it should be world leader in technology or manufacturing but it is not as life is very harsh here. For most professional except IT your education is not valid or you have to go through very length process of validating your education and getting in main stream to get the job some time it takes years of continuous job like effort. Salary structure is garbage compared to USA. It is impossible to find an affordable house or apartment which you can rent, forget about buying.. Tax system is upto moon. Healthcare is broken and on top of that Black money is dumped from all over the world in real estate. Canada is a broken country and it heavily relying on international students and wealth immigrants to run their country. You are welcome here if you have shit load of money otherwise think 100 times before you come to this country.

I feel like this video is a perfect analogy for the differences between the two immigration systems. If you want to get rich, you take your chances on the US and its lottery system. But if you're more interested in quality of life (better education and healthcare systems), then Canada is the better choice. We've fallen into the trap of the Canadian government and decided to come to realize that there's not many good job opportunities for us either. Some of my​ Canadian friends wanna go to the US. Not entirely accurate. It's pro-wealthy immigration here in Canada absolutely. It's citizenship for sale. Not necessarily wealthy in terms of really wealthy (like Switzerland) but it's definitely citizenship for sale, so if you don't have money, don't bother. Newcomers with medical and engineering expertise can't get jobs here in Canada, in spite of our healthcare system being on the point of collapse and our supposed hi-tech push. Regulatory boards here have made it impossible. Estimates are around 175000 qualified, internationally trained doctors and nurses who gave up trying to practice here and moved into other careers. Ukrainian doctors, for eg, with extensive trauma experience and willing to staff our emergency departments have been told they have to requalify by going to Canadian medical school to retrain for at least 4 years. Same story in engineering. By IT, our government seems to mean low-paid call center IT work, moving the IT sweatshop racket from India onto Canadian soil. If you can afford to buy a business - I believe the total business investment was 500 000 pre-pandemic - that's another way in. Not sure if thats gone up now. So many of our franchise businesses are essentially being used as citizenship tickets. The big ticket item: If you can afford 4 years of postgraduate or undergrad university program, or 3 to 4 year college program - and if you don't have the cash, loan sharks in India will distribute debt across the whole family for decades so one student can go . There us a very good documentary by an Indian filmmaker on the Canadian college/University recruitment drive in India and its consequences. Several of our colleges have student enrollments at over 70% of the entire student body, direct entry from India. Additional problems like grade inflation, different education standards, and outright fraud on ESL testing also mean that Indian students are not well prepared for school here. Many do not have enough English to succeed in their studies. They either need to spend for additional tutoring, take a qualifying year or two ESL (on top of the 3 or 4 program), or fail courses. Universities and colleges keep the tuition though. Honestly our colleges and universities are staying afloat because of Indian students. They're being treated like cash cows - and Indian recruiters are scamming the system, taking fees on their end with unsuspecting students getting falsified documents, or being told they passed their ESL when they didn't. It's a national disgrace. I'm a prof here, I've seen all of this firsthand. Your data may be correct, but the narrative you've constructed for it is not the real picture.

Yes this is sad for the individual. But we have all seen the marbles ted talk. If you haven't it is basically the idea that the US can only take a drop in the bucket when it comes to immigrants. Even if we took the same percentage as Canada did, its still nothing compared to the amout of people trying to get in. It is better for thier home country for them to live here for a little bit and go back. The US essentially only takes the best and brightest people from other countries. People that could be making their home countries a better place to be.

Much love from NYC to Canada. I went to Toronto in April earlier this year and I'm planning on going back later on this year. Yea, I went to Toronto and the last time i went to Toronto was probably in 2007 and trust me, a lot has changed. Same thing in NYC. I feel like too much immigration can cause chaos. It's crazy at the moment here in NYC. This is why legal immigration exists. It's supposed to keep things in control. It may take time but all good things take time and trust me, if you come here legally, you got my respect and good for you.

canada is a shit hole (born and raised here) yesterday there was a job fair at a grocery store and the line of people applying was over a km - for the lowest level position possible. rent in a town no one in the world has ever heard of is more than N.Y.C or Tokyo. we have thousands of homeless immigrants sleeping outside in camps in toronto as they have no where to go and everywhere you go in this country someone is dying from the opioid epidemic, crime has gone up 50% in many cities. no one will ever buy a house and the people born here cant/wont have kids because its to expensive. the Canadian population is dying out bc out government is trash and instead of helping us they bring in more immigrants who will take the shit housing with 14 adults in 1 room and wont call the labour board when they are exploited. that is why Canada accepts so many immigrants bc they are exploitable - very easy to see when you live here its disgusting.

Not to play devils advocate - I myself am an immigrant and my parents too in the US. However how come other countries like Japan and South Korea get praised for their country and not criticized for having a low number of foreigners? Or countries in Europe? I think immigration is great but of course we don’t want to take more in than we can handle and have people not afford anything like Canada. Plus a lot of Canadians or people who immigrate to Canada are also looking to come to America.

The summary touched on but didn't expand on one aspect: many use Canada as a back door entry into the US.\n\nSpeaking as a professional level Canadian living in the US, the Canadian brain drain is very much real. The cost of living discrepancy and wage limitations make the US a constant appeal for Canadian professionals.\n\nBecomes more realistic to immigrate to Canada, get a good education, residency/citizenship, work for a couple of years to gain experience... and then start job hunting in the US.\nMight take a few years but likely shorter and better odds than a lottery.

I'm not an immigration expert or an economist, but the problem with Canada isn't our immigration system, but WHAT the immigrants do afterwards. Sure, we take in hundreds of thousands of them...but for what jobs? Is Canada, for example, a truly dynamic tech hub? At one point yes, but only briefly and it seems like that process has stalled out considerably since the pandemic.\nDo we have the infrastructure for all of these people or are we adding hundreds of thousands of new competitors for housing? We have population growth, but the wages are so uncompetitive that it increasingly feels like Canada is inviting immigrants in to build the country...but Canadians have to create things for them to build or else, this doesn't really work, and these highly mobile, educated people will end up leaving (which is already a problem).

The choice between US and Canada is a choice amongst family, career, freedom, and affordable housing. You can't have them all. Although that said, life's struggles are not just for immigrants. I suppose everyone faces them in certain forms.

Canada has another problem that you forgot to cover. Canada isn't an entrepreneurial nation like America. Canadians are less risk taking compared to Americans which means you can have an influx of immigrants but less jobs for them therefore they will leave back to their own countries again. Most of the top employers of engineers in Canada are foreign companies, not local. Salaries in America are high due to the immense labor competition for engineers as there are more startups and entrepreneurial people. \n\nThen in Canada they require certain Canadian certifications especially for doctors which isn't as bad as in the US. So you have some engineers or doctors that end up working low paid jobs since they would have to repeat school in Canada from an accredited Canadian university. I don't see this as a problem for the US at all because these immigrants aren't going to create new companies and are merely looking for a job. Canadians not being as entrepreneurial and not starting companies to compete for the talents of these professionals will just result in these professionals working out of the Canadian offices of American and Asian tech companies.\n\nOverall not a win or loss for America. Even if these guys end up working in the Canadian division of American companies, American companies will still have the benefit of their talent which is a win at a lower cost for the US companies.

You forgot to mention that those High Skill Migrants that go to Canada LEAVE CANADA and go to the USA afterwards anyway. While we still take in a lot of unqualify migrants that should be sent to the outer region instead come to the cities and cause more problems for Canadians citizens already here because of the Federal government while leaving cities like Toronto to handle the horrible Housing and homeless crisis. Canada has a HUGE Brain drain problem and declining population problem. Thats the only reason Canada is so open for immigrations. Canada is Cursed and lucky being close by the US.

Lemme skip to the end and take a guess as to what's actually happening.\n\nIndians go to Canada first so they can get to their final destination, America, faster. Once they're Canadian citizens, they can apply for US green card and travel easily to America in the meantime. They can work and bide their time in Canada while working in America only having to return to Canada every six months or so instead of back to India.\nBottom line:\nEvery foreigner who goes through the trouble to become a US citizen (clearly worth all that trouble) should be absolutely against ALL illegal immigrants who just walk across the southern border and demand to stay.

I've heard people say it is much harder to immigrate to Canada than the USA. And the USA takes in the most immigrants in the world.

As an immigrant to the US, you summed up the issue very nicely. Another thing I noticed is that people who cannot get an h1b visa sometimes would go to Canada, get a Canadian passport to secure an insurance, and then come look for a job on TN visa or EB1 visa in the US. As an immigrant who comes to the US on a EB3 visa, I really hope that the US can prioritize employment based visas instead of family based or even illegals immigrants for the future of the country. One thing that makes a lotta EB immigrants scratch our heads is that why would the US government put all their efforts in taking in illegal immigrants and grant them a safe path to citizenship instead of taking care of the ones coming in legally first. Not to say the other group isn’t important, but it’s a weird way to prioritize things.

As a Yank ?? who immigrated to ?? Canada, it was the best move I could have made. As a teacher I had better working conditions, respect, and take home pay. (Oregon spends more per teacher but because health care insurance, the teachers get less money in their pockets. ) An retirement in Canada is even better.

I am a Canadian immigrant myself.. was forced to voluntarily leave the country after 20+ years of living and working there.. it's a well known fact that Canada is taking in almost an un capped number people that can't make it to the US or other countries.. the numbers are high and nowhere near sustainable for the economy to support so many. It's common for us H1B workers to migrate to Canada permanently and their employers normally move their US Jobs to Canada as well, with a lower pay and pushing healthcare and retirement costs over to the Canadian system while doing so.. just make a trip to Canada to see for yourself what this has done to Canada.. unaffordable housing, salaries that don't cover the cost of living, a healthcare, retirement and education system that is on the brink of collapse, widespread homelessness and fentanyl abuse, just a destruction of society and the nation overall.

I have mixed feelings about this video. This video does a good job outlining the immigration process but it does not highlight any of the negative consequences of immigration that Canada is experiencing. One of the main reasons why cost of living is so high in Toronto and Vancouver is precisely because we have so many immigrants coming in without enough housing supply. This is by design because politicians and the upper class have a vested interest in keeping real estate prices high because so much of their net worth is tied up in the housing market.\n\nAnother negative is that employers hire immigrants working low skilled jobs and pay them less than Canadians because the immigrants are willing to be taken advantage of since they're just happy to have a job in Canada which pays better than their country. \n\nAnother myth that gets repeated is that Canadian takes immigrants out of compassion and unfortunately a lot of Canadians believe this. It was never about compassion, it's about bringing more people to 1) pay taxes to support our social welfare as Canadian birth rates decline and boomers retire, 2) keep housing costs high and 3) pay immigrants lower wages for the same work because immigrants are fine being exploited since they have a job in a first world country.\n\nAnother problem is the cultural shift. In the most immigrant-dense regions you'll find that many immigrants themselves surprisingly don't want more immigrants coming to Canada because they see these negative consequences. The people who are most pro-immigration have no problem cramming 8+ people in a basement and exploiting their labour because they make enough money to live in communities that immigrants can't afford, and so they don't have to deal with the cultural shift that's taking place. This is NOT the fault of immigrants, but rather the politicians who put economic growth over quality of life. Over HALF the people in the GTA weren't born in Canada, so they didn't go through our school system and have no connection to our culture. Canada is unfortunately going to become very racist over the next 10-20 years as Canadians start feeling like outsiders in their own country. It's somehow considered racists to criticize the effect of multiculturalism on social unity, yet the cultures we accept in Canada only became distinct cultures because of monoculturalism.
