It’s how corporate greed and income inequality disproportionately affect the least fortunate.\n\nWould also like to see data related to the alleged increase in crime on the TTC.\n\nThe complaints about mental health wait times are not a Toronto issue, but a nationwide issue.\n\nThis video is hardly personal, relies on a few clips from CBC, CTV, and CP24, and doesn’t get to the heart of what it is like to be an everyday citizen of the city. Just looking for clicks with minimal value provided.

Over a decade of conservative mayors and council who care more about cars, landlords, developers and the suburbs they represent, plus the drive to keep our property taxes low and stop putting funds into things like public transit, social services for homeless, and general services has really impacted Toronto - and not in a good way.

While I appreciate the spirit of your critiques of the city, I would say that many of the problems you’ve cited are the same ones in all North American cosmopolitan cities: the cost of living is too high, and social services don’t keep up with the population. If there is a city in N.A. not afflicted with these issues, I say give it time. People will start leaving the big cities for the smaller ones which are usually less equipped in general.

It's all quite sad. Cannot afford to have family downtown. Lack of social services. I'm afraid in Canada, there aren't many cities to choose from, unlike U.S, for professional careers. A flee to suburbs could be feasible but generally it's a steep learning curve on managing a house (which is $1.5 million CAD these days). Perhaps it's time to look at other countries.

I can confirm that there's really nothing in Canada. They have no jobs and the Jobs they give to Black Immigrants in particular, whether you have a degree or not, are generally seasonal summer jobs in warehouses, working with plastic injection molding machines. When winter arrives, you get laid of until the next summer and the cycle continues. I have had a home base in Toronto for the last 20 years, traveling almost consistently for work until covid hit. While I am not a fan of the city tbh, I have stuck it out there this whole time as I have not been able to figure out where else in Canada I'd rather live. The way things have gone in the last little while however, I'm now making plans to leave Canada altogether. Even though I am unaffected by high housing costs as I've owned a home in the city, the general cost of living across Canada is now extortionate for what you get. Toronto was fine for me to use as a base for my traveling lifestyle in the past, but with crappy weather much of the year, a left leaning electorate that keeps voting ultra woke politicians at all levels of government, the now increased cost of living there is no longer worth it to me. I'm headed for the exit. All this said, I don't feel that your coverage about crime in the city was balanced. Yes the news stories you used actually did happen, but I do not feel unsafe in the city. A handful of incidents in a city with the population of Toronto - this is a blip.

Simple economics should dictate that if rents are so high that the majority can't afford them, they should drop. The peoblem is, there are a small number of people who are more than capable of meeting the high cost of rent and of real estate generally. This is indicative of how much economic inequality has grown in Canada, as it has throughout the English speaking world.

I have travelled around the World and usually in Urban areas. I was in Toronto recently (Sept 2023), like most big cities in the World it suffers from the standard problems. I watched the video and the cuts of Toronto are really nice.\n\n Homelessness in general is a terrible thing, but what city doesn't have homeless?? What major city is affordable? Rent in New York is about $5000 USD for 1 bedroom and we are not talking about something luxurious, in a great neighbourhood. \n\nBig Cities come big problems. We all have to make more of an effort to help change things, not just in politics but at the person-to-person level. People are suffering around the World with homelessness, crime, drug use, mental health and etc. Most of us just focus on what we can have and totally forget about the other humans that we share this planet with.

I recently visited Toronto on a business trip for the first time living in Montreal. I loved Toronto it is a great potential city. However, I saw drug addicts on the streets, homeless people at every corner I walked in, it is very expensive and on top of that I was harassed by a group of homeless drug addicts in one of its streets. I am lucky I had friends that told me where to go and not to go later. But as a new visiter you want to explore the city and enjoy your time and see what the city can offer you. I totally agree with what you said. It would only get worse as more and more flux into the city without any managing criteria regarding housing, jobs and life in general.

The economic situation in Canada isn't really well summarized by an 11 minute video generalizing the entire country like this. There are massive regional income and productivity disparities between provinces, with worker productivity, median income, and GDP per capita being highest in the province in Alberta, and lowest the east coast maritime provinces. Quebec being rather poor overall (compared to Ontario), and it's place in the federation is a whole other discussion worthy of an entire video series related to Canadian economic problems. Canada is also not a typical federation; the provinces have a very large degree of autonomy and jurisdiction over affairs within their border than other subnational units in other federations. So yeah, as a Canadian with an academic background in economics and political science, I have to say that this video is a gross oversimplification, just something to note for anyone that may not know much about Canada.

I’m born & raised in Montreal, Quebec and while it’s extremely multicultural and has an incredible education system, we have been experiencing a continuous housing crisis. Every year the rent prices and general cost of living are skyrocketing yet wages remain the same. It’s actually becoming a huge problem in Montreal. Young people are being pushed out as prices are starting to little by little be comparable to Toronto. \nAnd don’t get me started on the hate Anglophones receive here. Even Montreal natives like myself who are historically English get discriminated against every day. \nThe Quebec government is pushing the English language out of Quebec, making it harder and harder for Anglophones to be able to function and live practically here. You can’t even go to the hospital and get service. If you don’t speak French you can’t call and speak with any government services, and even businesses are forced to have French names, and only conduct their business in the French language. \nI myself am bilingual, but for someone who doesn’t speak the language, or is learning having trouble it’s nearly impossible to live in Quebec as they wouldn’t even be able to get a job. The discrimination Anglophones receive is insane and we are seen as a ‘bottom of the barrel’ minority, which is so sad seeing that this is where I was born and raised and where I call my home. \nThey’re taking away more and more public & social services and literally funnelling multi millions of dollars of funding , which is desperately needed for homelessness and many other social problems we have within Montreal and it’s all now going towards pushing the French language in Montreal (we literally have what’s called the ‘language police’ who’s job is to enforce French. They will give businesses thousands of dollars of tickets and even shut them down all because someone is caught speaking English) \nHopefully something will change soon or else Montreal is going to continue to become a place completely taken over by hate and discrimination and it will experience a MASS exodus (which is already starting).

Comments from a Canadian. Homeless people are generally concentrated in the larger cities but in the past few years it has become a real problem. It is a real problem for the people when the temperature drops to -30C. Mental wellness is a huge issue. The racism issue is mainly against the indigenous. The doctor migration to the US is a money thing, not better conditions. Getting a family doctor is easy in some places and difficult in others, generally in rural communities. Getting a reference to a specialist is not an issue and I believe this may be a doctor specific issue. If your GP does not refer you, ER will take care of you. The issue with referrals is the triage system that may result in a longer wait to see the specialist. This is in contrast to the US where one can see a specialist very quickly, if one has insurance. In Canada, every citizen and legal resident has the ability to receive medical care as covered by the provincial medical systems which differs from province to province. Many doctors are now offering online communication with your GP and specialist. Your finance comments are inaccurate. There are 5 nation wide banks but there are also nation wide credit unions and provincial banks which in my opinion these tend to offer better service than the big 5 (exclude National Bank, which is big bank but more investment focused). Cell carrier monopolies is a real issue. Cell carriers are recently offering unlimited data, no long distance to the US, etc. Other countries have a definite advantage here. The government has enabled conditions for a new carrier a few times but eventually, these smaller carriers get swallowed up by the big national carriers. More recently Rogers bought out Shaw which limits our choices further. Sales tax is not always 10-15%. In Alberta the sales tax is 5%. Passing courses and evaluations ensures there are standards which is a good thing. Would you want a Civil Engineer designing a road or bridge that is not suitable for the climate? How about a doctor with questionable credentials? Agree with your recommendations for hiring. It is expensive to hire and train a new employee but can be much more expensive to fire an employee. Agree with the housing crisis comments and the reasons. Getting an absent owner to fix a property? This is crazy inaccurate. Multi-dwelling properties have property managers paid to look after the properties regardless of who owns it. While on the average, foreign investment may not seem to contribute to property prices, this is not the case when looking a the local sectors of the big two - Toronto and Vancouver. There was a case in Vancouver where a property with a shack sold for over $1MM. This is not because the house price was unrealistic, but because of the property location and perceived property value. This is a direct result of foreign investment in houses in the Vancouver area resulting in a lack of properties. Many of these foreign owned single family investment properties remain empty most of the year. Another big issue in many Canadian municipalities is the lack of building code enforcement. The laws are in place but not always enforced.

But if it can get low enough for people to live a comfortable life then it probably would be preferred by many, including United States residents. Like not having a life of excess but one without major worries day in and day out. Unfortunately as hateful as people in the US have gotten towards immigrants and foreigners in general, those immigrants are probably better off in Canada despite the US having better pay and a milder climate.

I vacationed in the US often in the 70s and 80s. The scenery in the west is wonderful, New York and Washington DC are very dynamic and people are generally friendly. BUT things turned very nasty after 9/11. The bogus war in Iraq and the 20 year stay in Afghanistan changed everything. The MAGA crowd of haters, gun crazies, religious fanatics and the politicians who cater to them have made the country intolerable. Any advantages America may have are vastly outweighted by the negatives that are part of everyday life. Every school child has regular shooter on the loose drills routinely. Gun-toting losers may feel a thrill from carrying a gun but I don't like the sight of them.\n\nAmericans are like frogs in a sauce pan of water that is being brought to a boil. They just do not realize how bad the US has become.........

You definitely need more than a little self reflection at how “living in a small town” isn’t the answer since a number of shootings have affected small towns and if your small town is in the wrong state then your wife, mother, sister or daughter won’t have access to healthcare. House prices have increased because of businesses and law firms investing in the housing market. Ask your landlord who owns the house. They knew the market trend with the immigrants surging in. Brain drain comes from companies in Canada hiring immigrants with education, and accept lower wages. Americans work harder because they get paid more and know most of it does not go to tax. In Canada, its better to not work overtime because you get put into another tax bracket and you end getting pennies on the dollar. Nobody mentions the Colonial political system we have. I grew up in India and moved to Canada despite having family in the U.S. because I did not want to go through the shit show that is American immigration. That said, with the housing situation and generally how expensive things are in Canada, after 15 years, despite being a tech. worker, I decided to leave the country. I moved to Japan and despite the shrinking economy and demographic woes, I feel quite relieved to be out of the unsustainable shit show that is Canadian housing. Not to mention the weather, the absence of any dynamism in society or its culture, plus many other factors. It's been over a year now since I'm out and I frankly don't see myself going back unless there is a sustained correction in housing prices.\n\nFurthermore, I think immigrants don't understand how exploitative the Canadian economy can be towards newcomers. The problem with living in Canada vs. the U.S. is not comparable really at the level of immigration. Canadian immigration is easier but the problems of living in a smaller, less economically and culturally dynamic, more expensive, colder country never go away despite you having quickly received the opportunity to settle.
