I lived in Austria n Germany for long, but I never felt or heard foreigner! They treated me equal to themselves. Mind you I had dark hair n eyes, n olive skin color. They didn't find cultural differences in my behavior or food. Actually, I was respected n valied even more than average. They didn't know where I was from, unless they asked. But my look made them guess I was Spanish, South American, or Iranian which they liked. But they were really judgemental towards Turks, Yugoslavs, n others.\nI'm talking abt 1970s to 1990s. As someone who had to take the English assessment to attain the PGWP, I complained so much because I didn't come to Canada not knowing English, and I certainly did not graduate without the ability to read, write, listen and even present business cases in English. It pissed me off at the time cause he costs hundreds of dollars for something I was assessed on before even coming to the country. Did they really think my English got poorer after 3 years in the country? \n\nBut I totally get your point why its needed now with the way things are. However, in the long run, I think reforms should be made at the student visa level. Canadian and other international students who worked hard to get into uni don't need a deadweight that cant speak the official language of the university and contribute meaningfully. Forget contributing to Canadian society, would the student himself learn anything?

To all those supporting the cracking down on these ‘illegals’ there’s something I need to know. Tell me, if they folks had an option to immigrate legally, would they? I know a lot of orchard owners that are going to be just as screwed as they were during Covid, when they didn’t have the labor to get the fruit picked!! The kind of deportation Trump has been talking about has gone beyond people that are here illegally. Trump has expanded it to include what he calls 'undocumented' migrants. That group includes people waiting for their asylum hearings, DACA recipients and protected status migrants/refugees, and people that have already had their asylum hearings, but are awaiting their citizenship hearings. \nAs for the narrative about 'murderers' and 'violent/horrible' criminals being in our country, it's like....wait...what??? Now, if you KNOW a person is a convicted murderer or horrible criminal, WHY would you allow them into or allow them to stay in this country to begin with? And, you'd kind of have to allow them to stay, otherwise, how the hell would you know how many of them are here?? Or who they are?? You can bet your butt that Pres. Biden didn't allow any people like this, that weren't in our prison system, yet 'known' to remain on US soil. That's not how it works! Not to mention, a large portion of the 13 to 15,000 number that Trump and the Right keep tossing out there, are from when Trump was in office! NOT during Pres. Now Trump 'has a mandate' to put on an insane, cruel, probably hugely illegal 'show', of him rounding up large numbers of people and shipping them off to who the hell knows where..... whether they were here illegally or not. (he's already vowed to deport the 20,000 Haitians in Springfield, even tho they entered the country, LEGALLY, while TRUMP was president! HE is the one that signed their protected status into law!) This isn't just a white or black thing it's an out of control immigration system where people use loopholes in the system to gain residency. This anti-immigration isn't isolated in fact most immigrants who's lived in Canada all their lives have expressed deep concern that the government is letting in too many from one nation and the lopsided admittance is part of the concern. The metrics of the majority of new immigrants come from the Middle East and India how can anyone not notice the concern that many have been expressing for a decade. Canadians aren't against immigrants it's that we didn't expect to just let anyone in without actually knowing how to speak English or have etiquette and follow laws. Many have concerns that many of the new comers can't even speak English yet they have license to drive and how do we get around most bend the rules or the law. Myself I've notice a skyrocketing scam scheme and how can you not equate that to the rise in our broken immigration policy. The last time I heard you had to have certain criteria to be considered to immigrate and why is that some countries like from the South Pacific you need to know English have money in the bank and a skill or degree on a list of acceptable qualifications. So many who can't even read or write English have jobs, drive a car, then to make matters worse have housing yet we have a crisis? Most Canadians see the pattern and most are educated enough to know there is something to be said, loopholes and when they find it they abuse the system.

I could honestly write an entire book about this—I’ve been living in Costa Rica for the past three years, and let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride. My personal experience has been okay, because I was lucky enough to be contracted directly by the company, so I didn’t have to deal with any agencies (best-case scenario). BUT wow, the struggles are so real. Life abroad is insanely expensive! Sure, you might earn more, but all that money? It goes straight to bills, and don’t even get me started on the “black tax”—if you know, you know?. Plus Everyone back home just assumes you’re living the dream, lounging on the beach like a millionaire, when in reality, you’re just trying to stay afloat! NOT TO MENTION THE MENATL HEALTH, Premium tears!

I've lived here 6 years and can't wait to leave. Salaries are just enough to get by. I work full-time as an analyst and am looking for a minijob just to save money, which I already live quite modestly. It's easy to come across nasty unfriendly people, neighbors, service people, people in government agencies. I hate people staring in the most unfriendly manner or givng attitude for no reason other than they are nasty people. Don't get me wrong, there are nice people as well, but the bad experiences outweigh the good. Beauracracy is overbearing, personalities are underwhelming, the food scene is underwhelming, learning German is a big burden when you work a full-time job (and now I need a minijob too??). The country seems like it wants to diminish the human spirit and ambition. I definitely regret moving here. Many housing companies are over charging rent. I found out the company, Deutschewohnen, who owns my apartment was overcharging me by nearly double!! I had to go through a year long court procession to get them to lower it to the legal price which I won. And now they sent me a letter last month saying they are raising my rent, which is illegal and I have to go through ANOTHER court battle with them. Of course it is exhausting to try and find another apartment. Some people search up to a year. What a joke. And not to mention the dating scene. I've been single the entire 6 years and I'm quite an outgoing, friendly, loveable person. Dating Germans comes with own weird experiences and I refuse to give them a chance anymore, for my own mental health. If you're POC, it's not uncommon to come across strange sexualizations and general lack of understanding other's cultures. A couple years ago I was attacked by 8 men while walking home at night. I ended up in the hosopital and there was an investigation opened. The police asked me why they attacted me, which I didn't know since it was unprovoked. They just followed me for awhile, surrounded me and started beating me. The police said it was probably because I'm Asian. Meanwhile, I'm not even Asian!!! I'm Latino. ??‍♂This is the type of ignorance POC have to deal with in Germany. Also, I only have 1 German friend and all my other friends are immigrants (which I love) but this poses it's own frustrations because many people move here, then move away after a few years when they learn they can have a more fulfilling life elsewhere. So keeping long term day-to-day friends can be a challenge. The entire system is exhausting and there's not enough balance to bring joy to my life to want to stay. When I lived in NYC, an African American aquaintance had just moved there after living in Berlin for 8 years. She warned me not to move here because I will never feel I belong. I didn't listen. That was a big mistake. Germans can have Germany. I'll find my joy elsewhere. End of rant. haha

My friend’s family bought a house with tenant two years ago. Big red flag Ik. For the past two years they didn’t pay a single penny in rent. They’ve been fighting to get them evicted but they give excuses to not show up at court. Even accused the judge of being racist to delay the eviction process. Finally they got evicted by Marshall last week. They owe over $60k in rents. Now they have to sue to recover the rent. After paying lawyers to get them evicted, god knows how they’re gonna recover any money. \n\nThis is in NYC, it’s a messed up system. And it’s not gonna change anytime soon.

Well, I am leaving, yes. Although I am very grateful with Germany, I work in IT, and I don't hold a diploma, but I have more than 20 years of experience in the field, I always been offered jobs beneath my experience, only because of a paper. I am Italian and was very enthusiastic when I arrive 4 years ago, but the way I was treated was mostly bad, that led me not wanting to study the language anymore, people were so agressive in the streets. When I needed the back of the justice, it was never on my favour, even when I was right, as I was hit in the street by a stranger who made my face bleed, police said that it was nothing and that it was the opposite, even when they had evidence. I was mistreated at a hospital in Schwabing, München and medical attention was refused, police didn't help and they requested my to litereally scream for help, and I did because I was bleeding on a place I didn't know, with -4 degrees, without any jacket. I even tried with the discrimination line, which doesn't work, and if you write them an Email, they will say they cannot help. I Will never understand that level of cruelty, not to mention 5000 Euros I had to pay for a ticket, because I suppousedly scratch the car of a person and because my Kaution was never returned, tried, but never got a lawyer, because you need to pay for the air you breathe in this country. ARD, what is that? You pay for the right of internet, and you pay internet as well, the desorganization with the states is massive, and often times, you will get a letter in your box post having to pay somehting else. My energy and money was completely drained. I just had it. Despite of everything, this country tought me great things, like discpline and hard work which I really appreciate and will take this knowledge...somewhere else. I also became better human being as a result of being exposed to all of the bad things. But I am isolated case, not everyone goes through these things, I did, and to me it was more than enough to wanting to Auf Wiedersehen. Unfortunaly Germany prefers to keep people who did not come to the country to add something, crazy as it seems, they would allow more people who rape, do not respect their culture and commit other crimes, instead of really welcoming people who came here to have a better life. Germany is currently too focused on other countries problems and failed on attending the needs of their citizens and the citizens who came to live here, including europeans, as myself. I truly believe that Germany is a beautiful country, München is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever seen, and has astonishing landscapes and vibrant nature. But...

I came back to Canada in 2022 after 20 years living abroad, and it's been a mixed bag. Getting a good job is extremely difficult as international experience is rarely factored into potential employers decisions to hire - even if the companies you've worked for are Fortune 500. If you didn't work for that company in Canada, good luck getting the same position. You'll be working in a junior position despite your previous job title. My wife is currently going through this. She went from Project Manager at one for largest companies in the world to junior developer at a small company. Pay is.......not great.\n\nI've been lucky with having a lot of support of family and friends. A lot of the clients I've started to work with in my profession came through people I know. I never would have got these opportunities on my own in that amount of time. It would have taken years. Nepotism played a big part.\n\nTo come to Canada, and start a new life without a solid support system would be absolutely brutal right now. I got really lucky, but my situation isn't normal. I wouldn't recommend anyone (Canadian or immigrant) to come back right now if they're been gone for a long time. The rent alone is enough to turn anyone away.
