Canada has known for decades that we have put too many eggs in one basket - selling our resources primarily to the USA. We've had tariffs before and worked with them. Yet we still keep selling to the USA. This time is different. In conjunction with the tariffs, we have an American administration that is flat out insulting Canada. Saying we wouldn't exist economically if it wasn't for the USA. It's at a time when the USA won't promise not to use military force to annex land (Greenland) from a decades old ally. A time when clearly Putin is calling in his chips for whatever he has over Donald Trump. Canadians have had enough. We are directing our governments, provincial and federal, to finally, finally break from the north-south trade links. We need to establish stronger east-west trade links. The resources we have are wanted by many countries if the USA does not want them. It does mean much work within Canada. We need to get our AB-BC pipeline finished as well as the new sea terminal so we can ship our crude oil and natural gas to Japan and if need be, to China. We finally need to get out pipeline to the Atlantic coast finished so we can supply the UK and EU with our products. We need to double our rail capacity for shipping potash, uranium, rare minerals to Asia or Europe. Just as Trump hopes for a golden age of American companies coming home and building new plants in the USA, this will be a golden decade for Canada to create transportation corridors to get our resources to other buyers. America will have to look elsewhere for his raw materials. And we all know what that is - RUSSIA. They've already offered their rare minerals and crude oil. This is all clearly a well thought out scenario from the people working behind Trump to dismiss America's allies and trading partners - have us turn against the USA - as the excuse to open the door to Russian imports into the USA.

The US isn't launching a trade war against anyone. We are closing up shop and are getting ready to take care of our own. There is a massive difference. We cannot be expected to continue supporting other countries economies and defense obligations, when we have 2 generations of working class citizens unable to afford a home or have children. We have entire countries we could fill with the homeless and incarcerated, and veterans who see little to no positive treatment or respect within the job market. Things are already very very bad here in the states. I don't think many Americans realize how bad the economy is. Tariffs will force US companies to reduce the outsourcing of jobs, and force other countries who are over-reliant on trade from the States, to cultivate their own self-sufficiency. This may seem hypocritical when it comes to China, but that isn't a problem you can solve overnight. \n\nTo make it clear, Americans are going to suffer in the wake of this tariff decision, but that is the price we pay to force ourselves to change. We have made ourselves into a very weak country because of overreliance on other countries trade, and other countries overreliance on our intelligence, infrastructure, medical advancements, technological advancements, and defense capabilities. The american consumer and taxpayer front the bills for all of this, and they are suffering. This isn't a war on the rest of the world. It us telling everyone else that we can no longer be relied upon because we are weak. \n\nI didnt' even vote Trump the first two times he ran. But things have now gotten so bad that I was forced into voting for him this time. Why? Because he's a bull in a china shop. I expect him to tear every damn thing apart he can within our government. I want everything destroyed so it can be rebuilt by people who aren't complacent.

the current trade deal with Canada and Mexico is something trump bragged about when he negotiated & signed it 6 years ago. Trump called it the USCMA. Less than 1% of fentanyl comes across the northern US border. we can't refine light crude oil we pull out of the ground here so we buy more than 50% of our heavy crude oil and natural gas from Canada. Canada will turn off the pipes and sell the heavy oil and NG to Europe. The second oil supply was Mexico who plans to sell their oil in Europe too. It will be extra cold in the midwest and east coast this winter without fuel oil.

Prime Minister Trudeau is boldly hitting the nails on the head, and I admire his boldness and honesty as I've always admired Canada and its peoples. Trump is in the back pocket of the Russian dictator. His actions prove it to my satisfaction. Canada has been a staunch friend of the US, a real partner not just for economic benefits for both countries but for a democratic way of life. Canada is a strong democracy whose people are known for their open hearts and minds. I pray that this idiotic trade war started by a man who is subservient to Putin will come to an end. I say to Canadians, let us stick to our common values of democracy, free expression, peaceful borders, and our commitment to the greatest good of the many rather than the greatest good of the few and the Russian dictator.

The real reason for the tariffs is because it has never been fair for the United States we pay more taxes for products in Canada in Mexico in Europe and it's always been like that and it's sad that it has to come to this in order for everybody to pay their fair share. That's the real reason. it'sad that countries are mad because they can't continue to rip off the United States. if there's fair trades there are no tariffs period

I never thought I would be more supportive of a government imposing tariffs on us than my own government, but hey Trump aligning the US with Putin and starting unnecessary and harmful trade wars with our allies is moronic and treasonous. Trudeau comes right on and accuses Trump of siding with Russia. He's just trying to distract from the true problem. Trump is trying to equalize trade between countries and convince American manufacturing companies to comeback to America and or stay in America. As a Canadian, even though I have disagreements with our Prime Minister, he is OUR Prime Minister, and I am glad he is so clearly and strongly saying to the US government and US citizens that we are done playing around. We will pull together, as a country, and come out of this stronger. We are willing to take on short-temp pain to work towards finding new markets and diversifying our trade relationships. The Canadian economy is in a stronger position to survive and recover from a trade war than the US. The US Government in general has destroyed one of the most successful and positive economic and social partnerships in the world and neither Canadians, nor the rest of the world are going to forgive and forget.

Mr. Trudeau, I’m sorry our government sucks. I promise you that most Americans don’t want a trade war, or any of these insane changes that are happening to us. Many of us are incredibly terrified of what’s to come.

This is about more than the fentanyl. This is about Canada not pulling their own weight when it comes to defensive spending, this is about getting them to allow Us manufacturered cars into their markets, this is about convincing Canadian companies to build factories in the US… etc Trumps tariffs are creating hundreds of billions, soon to be trillions of dollars worth of investments into our market. We hold the largest market in the world. We hold the power here, not Canada. And bitching about relations with our allies isn’t going to sway conservative voters come the next election. I think finally Canada realized that if they have friend like US then they don't need any enemy. You can't trust US at all and need to start open your market for global trade. I am glad that finally this happened cause sometimes you need a slap on face to wake up from a cozy bogus dream. Yes it will be painful few years for Canada but when time will come for fresh water and Arctic resources, it will be payback time to US. Forget US and start shipping products to Europe, China and India. Make pacts and create meaningful relationships and let US do whatever they feel like doing because ultimately Canada is the 2nd biggest landmass in the world, 3rd biggest supply of oil, 5th biggest supply of natural gas, 1st in the world for supply of potash and uranium, If you include Great lakes then it has 4 coasts that can tie them with water so great opportunity to create best ports, 1st in natural source of water and 5th biggest agricultral landmass. Then why bother and put your energy into someone who don't care. Let US do whatever they like and forget about them. Just don't go to US and don't deal with US.

Fentanyl seizures going “into” the US from Canada is now so low is almost non-existent. Meanwhile Canada just seized 8.5 tonnes of cocaine going “from” the US into Canada just this week. Canada suffers way more illegal drugs and guns coming across the US border than the US has across the Canadian border. This is all the dumbest trade war declaration in history.

As a businessman, Trump was using Fentanyl crisis as a lame excuse. No matter how much fentanyl is controlled across borders he was still guaranteed in imposing the 25% trade tariff. \nCanada govt invested so much into the border security recently and visited multiple times in Washington to discuss this 25% trade tariff but all of them forgot that Trump is a very aggressive and stubborn when it comes to money!\n\nI am glad Trump has made Canada and even Trudeau bold and self dependent now!

Ah yes, the trade war that Canada will surely lose. I love Canada. Wouldn't trade it for the world, but this is a losing battle by which citizens on both sides will feel the full effect. Trump appeasing Putin is a chess move, that the PM seems to be overlooking. The US can't afford to go to war with Russia, but at the same time, it needs resources within Russia's neighboring region. So the US will do what they always do, and had people listened to what Kissinger had to say, they'd be better prepared for this. Nonetheless, let's stand proud and strong, and come together as Canadians in order to get through this.

There's many reasons not to like Trudeau up here in Canada, many of which are the reason he'll (rightfully) no longer be the PM next week. As a conservative I hated him for SNC-Lavalin (among other scandals), and the fact that his inexperience with the economy Harper left him is probably part of why this trade war is going to hurt more than it could have, and the fact that he's often been kind of a phony more concerned with looking and sounding good for the press cameras. Not this time. Nothing phony here; I've got to give credit to him for capturing the national mood pretty much perfectly with this speech. Good on him. \n\nAnd congratulations as well to Donald for pretty much handing the Liberals their best shot at a fourth term, too. What an absolute idiot. You can always trade and be a part of Europe. Come to us, we have the largest and longest border with you. And our economy is very much larger than the one of the US.

It's truly unfortunate that this is all caused by 1 person, who no longer has a system of checks and balances on him. I feel our relationship with the U.S has come to an end. We need to have closer ties with our friends in Europe, and secure more trade deals with the EU and Great Britain.

1/2: Myself and the saner half of the US that read, understood, and voted against Proj 2025 understands why they need to levy retaliatory tariffs especially as a Michigander who's lived less than 4 hours from Canada all her life, who has family in Quebec and Ontario, and is a job-seeking policy professional and international trade nerd who now cannot in good faith seek a job in the federal government. We have been looking and still do look to Canada as a model quite a bit and love Canada and Canadians to pieces. We Michiganders especially in the central and eastern UP and Detroit and Ann Arbor area are friends, coworkers, and family of Canadians. Some are even dual citizens. It is sad that it's come to this. \n\n2/2: I still personally just can't wrap my head around how a trade deal Trump put together himself and called the best (the USMCA in question) is all of a sudden so bad. Logic doesn't work with these types of people... I really want **someone!!** to ask him/ admin officials about the USMCA **to their face** and see what they say because I am so upset by this nonsensical and corrupt administration.

Maybe he should discuss the constant duty fees and border crossing fees for anything shipped from Canada to the USA that have been constantly rising for years; fees that his very own government sets. Maybe he should talk about Canada demanding that anyone that sells anything foodwise to anyone in Canada from the USA has to have a special Safe Food For Canadians Food License or the goods being shipped will be rejected at the US owners cost, seized by the border and held in storage at the US owners cost, and destroyed and billed to the US owner. A license that no one actually needs considering other legal and ethical controls are in place to prevent unsafe foods from crossing the border, but Canada reserves the right to make us pay for one or we suffer consequences. Maybe he should discuss how they left their borders open to migrants, making it much easier for criminal migrants to get into the US. Maybe he should understand that the US has always been bleeding money to Canada on a trade level for about half a century with it getting much worse in the last decade because Canada's government are greedy. Before any of you come at me, keep in mind I work in the food ingredient industry as an order processing, logistics and customs & border crossing and have done so for 15 years. These tariffs were a long time coming and if any of you are on the inside of trade in the manner I am, then you know what I'm saying is true. The US is constantly paying additional tariffs by way of duty fees, customs fees, certain applied taxes (like there is literally a blueberry tax to ship US grown blueberries into Canada to prevent US blueberries from taking over the Canadian blueberry market). The blueberry tax is about 25cents per lb. which drives the price per lb. up for the seller and buyer. You wanna know why Food costs so much? All of the above with a huge side helping of GREED.

So this means all trade with Canada is equal ? Do we both tax the products coming in the same amount ?

Start checking Canadian ports. The border is just a part of it. Maybe if they up the staff at Canadian ports we can get somewhere with this trade war. That's where a lot of Canadian cars are going after they get stolen they need to check more shipping containers for contraband. That's probably where most fentanyl or precursors are coming in.
