I guess because Toronto is so huge and because I stayed in the main touristy areas I only noticed a few homeless people during my trip. They were more noticeable to me in Calgary in the spring. But the worst I've seen is Portland, Oregon and Seattle, WA and in 2021 Washington DC was pretty bad off...though the encampments I saw then had been cleared out by DC when I returned in 2023.\n\nI really really enjoyed my stay in Toronto over Labor Day weekend, my first time ever to visit. But just looking around me I got the same sense I did in NYC...it's a beautiful place to visit but living here would be ungodly expensive. The luxury apartments across the street from my hotel seemed to have rather low occupancy, from what I could see from my hotel room window at night. A lot of rental real-estate are speculative investments and any thought of addressing housing needs, keeping occupancy rates high, etc. are purely secondary concerns...zombie buildings with unaffordable rents that remain sparsely occupied while the need(s) are so dire is morally offensive and government should step in with rent controls and occupancy requirements and tax those owners more heavily who have occupancy below a minimum threshold. The increase in crime is a completely expected outcome of economic desperation. The US answer is usually more police & harsher penalties but I hope Canada is more rational and humane in addressing these societal ills.

I saw your video and remembered when I came to the USA as a refugee in 2003. It was a tough ride. I had to take three buses to go to work. I also shared an apartment with a young girl from Kenya. It will get better. Hang in there and keep your eyes on Jesus. Today, I am a United States Citizen, I have two bachelors degrees ( Nursing/Psychology). I am now in school for my Masters in Nursing while establishing my own business. I own my home and no longer have to take the bus- I own two cars. I recently visited Toronto on a business trip for the first time living in Montreal. I loved Toronto it is a great potential city. However, I saw drug addicts on the streets, homeless people at every corner I walked in, it is very expensive and on top of that I was harassed by a group of homeless drug addicts in one of its streets. I am lucky I had friends that told me where to go and not to go later. But as a new visiter you want to explore the city and enjoy your time and see what the city can offer you. I totally agree with what you said. It would only get worse as more and more flux into the city without any managing criteria regarding housing, jobs and life in general.

I'm brazilian and run a language school in my country. I've been to Toronto 3 times in exchange programs with my students. The first time, in 2012, I found the city amazing and incredibly safe. The second time, in 2018, I noticed a small change for worse in terms of security and homelesness. My last time in Toronto was this year, and I felt myself very insecure and saw things that I wasn’t accostumed to seeing not even here in Brazil. It’s a pity, because Toronto is an unique city and it has potencial to be very developed socially speaking. Unfortunately, I'm searching for alternative destinations to take my students abroad.

Wow, I finally hear someone saying that Vancouver is ugly. I thought I was the only one. I’m from Europe so it was super obvious to me that there is no comparison with European cities and I always cringe when I hear that Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities. It’s literally just the surrounding that is beautiful, not the city. Having said that, I disagree that this is common with all North American cities. Even with my European eyes, I adore the older North American architecture. I think architecture in Chicago is great. San Francisco is beautiful (without the homeless), so to me Vancouver is ugly even in the context of North America. Most of downtown Vancouver has either new boring glass condos or the older ones that look like buildings from communist era in Eastern Europe. And I became really upset about that because this beautiful spot on the west coast deserved beautiful city, it should have been Canadian San Francisco. Original in its own way, but beautiful. But it’s really not. I’m sure it was way more interesting city 50 years ago. I saw old photos and it had some character.

Thanks for the very informative video. I just got back from a week in Vancouver and saw so many drug addicts and homeless people when I drove through East Vancouver on my way to Gastown. Years ago when I drove this same area, I didnt see this problem. What the heck happened? Is the U.S. rubbing off in Canada. Crime, drugs, homeless people, and criminals seem to have migrated from the U.S. to Canada. Anyway, I was contemplating buying a house in Coaquitlam and retiring there for 6 months out if every year. Now, my eyes are open to what it would really be like. Still better than the U.S., crime wise, but the prices are high. Gas equivalent was $7.50 PER gallon. Food was more. Walmart was more. Starting January 1, 2023 no foreigner can buy property in Canada for 2 years.

I'm Canadian and worked in Dertoit for almost 10 years, I crossed the border daily working for GM. I've also done work in Louisiana, Indiana and all around Michigan. \nAmerica has some of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. It's a beautiful country and has a ton to offer anyone with an ounce of drive. The variety you have in your economy is amazing, we don't have a lot of choice when we buy stuff, you guys have so much more to choose from, take restaurants for example, I've never seen so many chain restaurants in one place, we have a handful of them. \nFrom what I've seen, there's also a lot of poverty, crime and violence, but that's literally everywhere right now, even here in Canada, we don't prosecute violent crime anymore. The gun issue is probably the biggest problem...I always felt extremely vulnerable out in public, especially driving, because I assumed everyone had a gun on them, I seen so many random guns on people, it just blew my mind. I always had to keep in mind when I was driving not to road-rage...That's how you get shot. The health care industry in America is nothing but a business model designed to bankrupt people. Our system isn't great at all...nothing to boast about. If you have to visit the ER at any hospital, you'd better bring food and water, you'll be there at least 8 hours before you're even seen by a doctor. Our health care is free yes, but we're taxed to death here because of it. I do indeed wish we had a 2-teir health care system, I want the option to pay to get seen soonest. America and Canada have free(ish) speech. We're both being ruled by leftist loonies, but that's all changing in our next respective election cycles. Biden and Trudeau will be shown the door and we can hopefully get back to healthy debate and more conversation in society...Instead of automatically dismissing each other, vitriolic badgering one another and hating each other. We had unity for a brief time, we all saw it, after 9/11 happened. We put our petty crap aside and saw each other as brothers and sisters. That didn't last very long and we've been in a constant state of crisis ever since. The media has driven a huge nail right through society, and takes a blow at every single issue we face, making it Left vs Right...\nIt's unfortunate to say, but it's going to take something truly devastating, possibly on a biblical scale, for us to come together again.

Although I enjoy traveling to the USA and have seen amazing places and met great people, there is no way in hell I would move there. As a Canadian from the Maritimes I have to agree with all the reasons he read. Any time I travel south I have the highest travel insurance to fly me back to Canada if something happens. I have visited the US many times and enjoyed it while I was there but was VERY happy to be home. I agree the small towns are safER but I saw people driving around with 5 LARGE guns in the roof rack of their truck, I DO NOT mean hunting rifles. NOPE! Got in the rental car and headed North out of Georgia right away. The South IS beautiful to see and may people were very sweet but I did not feel safe there. I prefer the Northern states. I was thinking about my yearly vacation options recently and the US was NO WHERE on my list. Mostly Northern Europe, Italy, and Greece. Sorry, but that's my opinion of my travels there.
