The tariffs were to incentivise Canada and Mexico to help stop the flow of fentanyl into the u.s. the tariffs didn't need to happen. if these governments helped curb drug flow by securing their own borders there wouldn't have been tariffs. Instead they sided with China that makes the drug that kills 15,000 people a year in the u.s.. these people's blood is on your hands and your reason for doing it? you don't like trump.. you just had to secure the borders so people would stop needlessly dying, but you just wouldn't do it..

it worked the first time he instituted these tariffs in 2016, I suspect it will work again, because Canada and Mexico have no real leverage. they can say they will fight back with their own tariffs but its a losing game for them because, they are a luxury for us. we dont need them. they need us far more than we need them. and thats why despite grumbling they caved in last time. they will do the same, you just have to let them get it out of their system like a toddler and try and save face for a bit.

American trade accounts for only 24% of its massive GDP. if you removed all trade from america, it would still have larger economical output than china, mexico and canada COMBINED. yes. Combined. \n\nFurthermore, Canadian trade with america account for almost 80% of all trade in canada. A 25% increase would be absolutely devastating to canada. In america its about 13% so a 25% increase would cost more but it wont have any significant impact.\n\nNo doubt this tarrif war will cause far more problems for canada mexico and china than america. By a LOT. \n\nI dont think america is being selfish either. China does nothing to protect america from sending precursor chemicals to america to manufacture fentanyl. As a New Zealander I am very proud of when we stood up to the US over using our waters to transport nuclear weapons. I think Canadians should feel the same pride that your standing up now. Don't let them bully you just because of there power, Canada has many true allies all over the world.
