WHERE are municipal politicians supposedly limiting the construction of homes? I don’t see it. \n\nWe are aware that there are regulations in place to protect buyers and that self-serving industries lobby to do away with, as those protective regulations can reduce profits. Some provincial governments (like Alberta) are highly sympathetic to lobbies and industries, to the detriment of citizens. \nWhy are you not pointing to the fact that successive federal governments of the past stopped funding the construction of lower cost housing (thereby creating more demand AND our number one problem of unmitigated greed throughout the real estate and home building industries? We have some people in government attempting to get more low cost homes built while industries know that they can make more money building houses that are far, far bigger than people NEED. Dumbasses and keep-up-the-Jones folks unwisely buy these homes and then many of them have difficulty affording a lifestyle that they think they are entitled to. Meanwhile, lower income earners have been priced right out the market. Of course, capitalists and real estate investors like Pierre Poilievre will never admit that these are our actual problems. Regulating the construction and real estate industries could have gotten a lot more homes built in higher density for young and lower income Canadians, as well as for our newcomers. \n\nToo much blind and poorly informed anger, selfishness, and foolishness going around. Canadians of the past who pulled together during world wars would call us weak and entitled.

Who has told them that there is abundance here. I’m almost 80 years old and I only received $240 a month in Social Security. I have asked for more money because I’m sickly and can’t work but they won’t increase it because they say, basically, you have to be like crawling on your hands and knees, or in a wheelchair. Many of my friends cannot get disability insurance. They have to wait almost 2 years and have to get a lawyer. I don’t wanna wait till I get that bath then what I’ll be in the street. people in our government, and on the far left are lying to them they might give them a little bit of money when they first arrive, \nBut it won’t last then they’re gonna be homeless like everybody else we see on the streets of Los Angeles in every town. I worked all my life here in California and that’s all I get is $240 a month.

Many of the issues you bring up are the same here, but I am willing to deal with those over the impending chaos we are seeing down here. I am an American living close to the border in Buffalo, but I am considering a move to Canada due to the political climate down here. I would rather pay a little more in taxes & gas than deal with the Christian Taliban we are heading for. The Canadian housing market can be fixed, food prices can come down, but once you start losing rights, it's time to consider your options. When I (a straight white guy in his 50's) can see the writing on the wall, it's getting close to time. That being said, living in a state (New York) that will fight the incoming stripping of our rights, will buy us a few years. I can deal with all the other things (high housing costs, soul crushing medical debt, overpriced college, & out of control gun violence), but we are way too close to a civil war for my comfort. I travel up and down the east coast and don't believe what they are saying, we are way too close to a pre-WW2 Germany situation for anyone to feel safe. The amount of gun owners threatening violence is very concerning.

It's astonishing to see so many Canadians voicing serious complaints about their country. More to hear complaints coming from immigrants who then left Canada in disgust and found better lives elsewhere is even more astonishing.\n Yet I warn everyone else. It's okay for Canadians to complain about their own country. They have every right. As for immigrants or immigrants who left Canada, well, they were there and experienced the downside, so they have legitimacy.\n But for any other non-Canadian, including me, keep our mouths shut and say nothing. Let only the Canadians speak here. If you non-Canadians are foolish enough to open your mouth, a hundred angry Canadians will come here to loudly denounce you and maybe swear profanities for demeaning their perfect nation, Canada, and that all these complaints really don't exist and are made up.

Im leaving because Canada is one of the worst communist woke hellholes on the planet. Its also incredibly anti-whyte. 4 more years then I can retire and get the hell out of this frozen dump. I immigrated to Canada in 2010, and here are my experiences inside and outside Canada. I am grateful for a good education; having a Canadian passport opened up many opportunities in other countries to build a higher-level career. However, if I had known the amount of stress, health, and financial damage that I had to endure, I wouldn't have chosen to come to Canada. I would have remained in the US or EU countries where I could achieve even more without suffering to the level I did here. \n\nMisleading immigration promotion: The government-sponsored Canadian immigration program oversells what Canada can offer. It withholds information on the cost of living, chicken-and-egg problems like Canadian work experience is required to get a job at the same level as you are in, Canadian credit history is required to rent a proper apartment, Canadian education is required to secure a high-level job, etc. \n\nHiring process: I knew the Canadian system was not ideal for immigrants over a decade ago, but it got so bad now that even the born citizens are unable to survive. The Canadian government and employers lack a basic understanding that ambitious, high-achieving people immigrate to other countries for high-level positions using proper channels. It's ridiculous to see that Canada uses a point-based system to choose highly qualified personnel to enter their country yet expects them to pursue low-paying entry-level or labor jobs just because they have brown/black skin. At first, I thought having a Canadian degree and experience might help me get high-level jobs, and I didn't think how I spoke or looked would matter when I had high credentials to show off. So, I got my masters & Ph.D. from the Univesity of Toronto, which consistently ranks #1 in Canada. I have a bachelor's from a prestigious university in Asia and had a high-competitive, well-paid federal government job in another country. Still, none of that was recognized in Canada, and I had to volunteer for over 6 months, 10 to 12 hours/day, in a research lab that led to a funded PhD program. I worked even harder during my Ph.D. with many accomplishments, like 40+ research and leadership awards, internationally recognized scientific discoveries, and innovative technologies. I checked all the above and beyond in various domains (research, teaching, leadership, business, engineering consulting, collaborations, etc.). Yet, employers couldn't see past my race, gender, age, etc., and refused to give me the opportunity at the level of my qualifications. Luckily, I managed to secure short-term work in the UK & the US, and it changed even how I see myself. I was highly respected for my credentials, given higher positions than I applied for, and paid 3-4 times more salary and benefits. Of course, bias is an integral part of every society, but my race, gender, age, etc., were not as big of an issue to begin my career at the mid-career stage in these countries as opposed to Canada. \n\nHealthcare: Access to healthcare was another big challenge for me. When I moved to Canada in 2010, due to extremely low temperatures, I developed hives all over my body, my eyes got red, and I coughed for many months. The doctor said there was nothing wrong with me and refused to give me any medication. It took us years to get a family doctor, and we got one through my personal network. In 2015/2016, I developed an autoimmune disease, and my eyeballs popped out. As of today, I did not get to see an eye specialist as they have only 1 specialist in the area, and the waiting time is for years for the first consultation. Every time the family doctor told me that I had iron deficiency, even when I insisted that they should run additional tests and they cleared, they were flagged. The doctor never diagnosed my autoimmune condition. Luckily, during my short-term work in the UK, I saw competent interns who completed my care. NHS is poorer than the medical system in Canada... they are understaffed, don't have hospital beds after surgery, or don't have stock of paper gowns, yet the staff are highly competent and caring. Within 1-2 years, they did complete diagnosis by sending me to various specialists, completed eye surgery, and even found a lifelong condition that was preventing me from realizing my full potential. Following, in the US, the doctors confirmed the diagnosis of all the conditions within 1-2 months and put me on two small pills for life. It has dramatically changed my life, and I have even more admiration for the medical profession. While in Canada, I suffered for over a decade, and every time, I was treated as a hypochondriac and never given a single prescription. \n\nQuality of life: Big cities like Toronto are mainly affected by high crime rates, overpopulation, cost of living, low employment, low salaries, etc. A few months back, there was a huge auto theft, and one of my contacts lost their Lexus car within minutes of parking. Despite being a scientist, I have no faith in politicians or individuals fixing these problems. The salaries are not increasing, but the taxes and cost of living are on the exponential growth curve. The ridiculous part is that Canada expects you to pay taxes even when you are not employed or living in Canada! I lived in London and Boston, and they offer a much higher quality of life and pay. \n\nGrowth potential: No wonder Canada, being a G7 country, falls at the bottom of the list in innovation, equal opportunities, economic growth, etc. It has a decent education system but, due to its inherent bias in the hiring process and monopoly of certain businesses, loses talented immigrants and highly qualified Canadians to the US, the UK, and EU markets. Unless there is a dramatic shift in policies, Canadians, especially new immigrants, cannot expect any positive experience in Canada except for being discriminated against and losing valuable time and money by being there.

DEMAND is WAAAAY up, thats why the housing is expensive (see how that works?). We have been ranked second best country to live in, only beaten by Sweden. As a 59-year-old Canadian lived here all my life I recently had surgery and was quite happy with the results I think part of the problem is people will get a little fever and they have to run to emerge but maybe you should try taking Tylenol and see if the fever goes down stop running to the doctor with so many little problems. It’s very natural for us to get sick when we’re young it kills us a better immune system when we get older.

Possessing a Canadian passport is the goal; there are literally millions of Canadian expats who live outside Canada, perhaps they visit frequently, or infrequently, and many have investments in Canada. Become a global citizen, live where you like and visit Canada when you like. Canada will continue growing.

You fail to see that many Indian IT employees see Canada as a Stepping stone till the US Visa gets cleared . I know many fellow indians who first work for microsoft in Canada , then once they have canadian PR moved to microsoft headquarters in US. Same is true for Indian students . It is easier and cheaper to get a MBA or Masters in Electrical engineering in UToronto than in a top US university . Most Students who travel to Canada for education , leave for jobs in US .

I lived in Toronto, Hamilton, and St.John's in the 90s. Canada was a strong country back then, and government was fair and hardworking. We all could see Canada growing into one well developed country some day. And then in the 2010s I went back to visit twice, many once crowded places in downtown Toronto and vancouver were deserted. Shops closed. Beggars everywhere even in cold winter days. People are still very polite, but I could see the hopelessness in their eyes. Like everyone is too busy to care for others because they have trouble looking after themselves too. \n\nI cry for you Canada.

For housing, something that needs to be and should be discussed is the land base. \nI know some real estate players in BC that laugh when people talk about housing and affordability, they say look at the landbase and who controls it. In BC its a crazy amount to 94% and only 5% available for ownership of the people. No option to apply and buy anymore and only lease. That is why even rural lands in BC 40 to 60 minutes outside of a teir two or three city is still thousands per acre! To the coast to coast to coast average its 88%+ controlled by governments and not the people. Do the math there and you will start to see the connection. \n\nAlso, for health-care, its not free just paid for through taxes by the governments on the people. It is broken in so many ways and most likley too big to fix kr repair now without a full ripdown and build up. \n\nMany orher things but just my initial points.

I don't think Canadian Government have many options for this matter. People now can see one or two side effects of a sequence of immigration policies, but overlook the other side of the same coin that newcomers fill a gap in the labor market and tax revenue. After pandemic, I suppose many restaurant and hotel owners would be happy to see more legal migrants coming to Canada. For public schools, they may also be happy to see that. And I don't see a good reason for a country of immigrants to start a backlash against migrants. Believe it or not, there're still a large group of people and businesses benefitting from those policies. The second largest country around the globe only has a population of about 40 million, even less than that of UK. It sounds like a joke when people just complain about housing crisis due to higher immigration but not complain about lots of vacant and unutilized spaces.

It's not immigration that's causing the housing crisis. Check and see how many refugees are coming across to Canada. The news agency need to ask the CBSA how many refugees are getting processed alone at Pearson International Airport.

I'm an immigrant from Latin America myself and i have to agree but it's deeper than that.\nI try my best to assimilate the culture but clearly not every immigrant does the same. \nOne of the reasons i left Toronto a couple years ago was precisely because of the housing crisis. Rent prices was on the roof.\nBesides that there's too many foreigners, half the city is trying to learn English and consequently the city's identity is lost. \nBut i guess this lost of identity is happening everywhere in Canada. It's sad to see.

What is the cost of living like in Europe compared to Canada. I would be curious to see that comparison. Also what about inflation, health care, crime rate, etc… \nThis also talks about Toronto a lot, one of the most expensive place in the country to live in. Housing there is unaffordable for many of us. All other places aside from Vancouver are more affordable.

There are just too many immigrants being let in. I’m shocked at the amount of international students at my college. I feel like its almost 90% are international students trying to get PR and some of them can barely write properly. The quality of work being put out by the students makes me question the integrity of schools. So many of them don’t care about what they’re studying and put minimal effort. All they want is PR. They are not willing to adopt Canadian values and I see people pushing and shoving to get on public transport instead of being civilized. I think immigrants from 30 years ago were a different group. Most were refugees and wanted a better life and were willing to adapt to Canadian culture and adopt new values. But nowadays, the mass of immigrants coming in are very different. Many of them are wealthy and are here not to make a better life for themselves and contribute to Canada. They are here to get PR in order to get Canadian benefits as its much better than their own countries. Some want to be able to move to the US later on. They’re taking advantage of the system and it’s f*cking the country.

You are lying to the people about Canada or you don't know. West Africans, aka sub Saharan African are not the favoured group selected for immigration to Canada. For some reason the immigration policy favours Indians from India. 90% of the people favoured now for immigration into Canada are Indians and secondly Latinos from Mexico or some other Latin American country. So many West Africans in Toronto are working with InstaCard, Door Dash and doing Uber and Lyft. It is called the GIG economy. You are not in a stable job. The living standard is high in Canada, meaning even the poorest has access to a quality life through the Social Services govt system. Maybe you think that is living the good life equivalent or on par with a person of European ancestry who is at least 3rd generation Canadian and in over 75% of the cases have had a transference of Generational wealth.

But even in India I have studied with many Sikh students and never see anyone coming to the school or university with the Kinfe or Kripan whatever it is. This is clearly a sign to spread disturbance and to get unnecessary attention. They don’t represent any religion, they are extremist.

I studied in Canada back in 2010, worked in Africa for many years and I am from Africa. Currently, live in Europe, Portugal I got my residence after 2 years. I came here from Africa with my family. The quality of live is good. You have more free time to be with family, health systemn and education are free. You may pay monthly fee meal for your kids depending on your income with low income you dont pay nothing. What is true is about the economy grogth for you and family. I feel some segregation, racism is visible and very difficult to see black in very high paying job. I know many people who got nacionality but still earn minimum wage. As someone who lived in Canada, Africa and now Europe, yes Canada is way better I don't agree with USA in term of quality of life and security mainly if you plan to immigrate with your family

I live in the US and it is a great place for business but if you are black, you have harder obstacles to overcome. You can find articles about black business owners have a harder chance of getting investments and business loans compared to other races. There are many successful black entrepreneurs but for them to even see the success, they had to go through a lot of hardship and this is part of the reason why blacks prefer to move to Europe.

1) Toronto is poor value. Getting housing of any kind (buying or renting) is stupidly expensive. And the quality you get for the price is lousy. Especially the newer builds, which are just thrown up as quickly as possible and sold to investors. Policy measures generally all seem to serve to just inflate the price of housing further. The occasional lip service given to affordability is amusing, but ultimately sad. There are lots of people who really do not want the housing bubble to pop. They will fight against it with all they have.\n\n2) It has become kind of boring. There is lots to do if you have money, but it’s harder to find entertainment on a budget. Even the free stuff like parks are filling up. Stuff like sporting events, eating out, going out is very costly across the board. Even the “cheaper” stuff is expensive. It seems like a lot of local culture is disappearing. Even the cool neighbourhoods are filling up with the same chains. I think the high commercial rent and bureaucracy is deflating a lot of would-be entrepreneurs. Most landowners seem to just be banking on cashing out their land for condos.\n\n3) Canada overall has a high cost of living compared to salaries. In the US you can find lower cost of living areas that still give you a real city experience. And in Europe you can be poor but still live a decent, if no frills, life. In Canada the basic necessities are all expensive. Phone bills, grocery bills, rent, insurance are through the roof. Domestic travel is expensive. And the dollar sucks if you want to travel abroad. Health care is free but good luck finding a family doctor or waiting 8 hours in the ER these days. It’s expensive to be poor, or even middle class.\n\n4) Most of the Greater Toronto Area, outside the core, is soulless suburbs with awful transit - very “American” except with worse traffic congestion. You will need a car, which is another huge cost. Row upon row of old cookie cutter suburbs with the same crappy houses. Good luck walking anywhere, and if you do you will need to walk down boring, treeless arterial roads with cars zooming past right beside you, and cross giant eight lane intersections that were never built for humans on foot. In a rainstorm or on a fall evening you have to be really careful not to be run over by aggressive drivers.\n\n5) It is hard to raise a family in an apartment here. You can do it but it’s not very easy, and also you are still kind of judged for it. Lots of young people are feeling stuck and are deferring or avoiding starting a family. Buying any type of house, even a basic townhouse, requires pledging your soul to a bank by taking a massive mortgage with eye watering debt in a volatile market. But few apartment buildings have the kind of sensible gentle density, the family unit sizes and the common amenities, like little courtyards with jungle gyms, that you might find in Europe. No one ever contemplated that anyone would ever desire to raise kids in an apartment. It’s just a cultural thing that has worked its way into how things are planned and designed.\n\n6) The transit system is ok by North American standards but awful by international standards. There are only two real subway lines, one stub line, one line that is permanently out of service after a derailment, and another line that was supposed to open a couple years ago but still has no date for opening. The subways go out of service frequently, sometimes for the dumbest reasons, and then it is a zoo of shuttle buses. The streetcars are nice but so slow. The buses are fine if you find yourself dreaming about riding a daily herky jerky rolling tin of sardines. They are building a lot of transit but it will take decades to get done.\n\n7) There is still a lot of cool multiculturalism and opportunities to experience different foods and cultures - one of the best things about Toronto. Increasingly though it seems to be losing the fun vibe of the 90s, when everyone celebrated each other’s backgrounds and was chill. It seems the immigration is not as broad based anymore and also people are importing a lot of their “old country” grievances here. The immigration system also kind of preys on people abroad by selling them a false fairy tale, so they end up dejected when they arrive and see how things really are.\n\n8) This one might be controversial but it’s kind of an ugly city. There’s nothing particularly of historical meaning or value. Some of the older neighbourhoods are kind of nice, but the last 25 years they have only built giant glass skyboxes, one after another. There aren’t the cool “missing middle” walkups like in NY, Chicago or Montreal (or even LA). There are very few buildings with much architectural character. Some of the buildings they deem “heritage” here are an embarrassment.\n\n9) For safety, honestly on this score I think Toronto is not bad. There are not too many real “ghettos” and it’s night and day compared to much of the US. With that said, there is more vagrancy and social issues these days, with tents and such. It’s very sad but the shelters are full, lots of homeless go into the libraries, parks and transit system. It does make it harder to enjoy these public amenities safely. It is nowhere close to Europe where you might let your kids run free around town. Canadian parents still helicopter their kids and the place again is not designed to really be safe for kids, in the same way as Europe.\n\n10) Finally, a bit of a double edged sword. Toronto had a lot of youthful energy - people coming here from all over. It is definitely not as sleepy as many parts of the world. With that said, it is becoming a bit of a transient place (minus the world class experiences like London or NY). If you are from elsewhere you might find it hard making and keeping friends. I’ve seen lots of people struggle because it’s is hard to build a strong social network. We have a very “shallow” culture here - people are extremely polite but not overly warm and hospitable. We treat one another kind of like neighbours - meaning we’d like to have a cordial, drama-free coexistence and otherwise kind of stick to ourselves.

What is going on in the world? The U S and Canada seeing tents pitched up on the streets of what were some of the finest cities in the world. Something is very wrong. I grew up on blue-collar modest means. We were happy to celebrate life. My family members weren't educated, and we had real domestic family problems as so many do. We may have been poor, but we had what we needed and were never facing homelessness. Is this the result of globalization, overpopulation, global warming, and greed? God help us all. Vote blue and pray. ❤

I wouldn't live there if you paid me to do so. Wayyyy to many liberals and their smug attitudes. Lets just keep importing the world and see if it gets better.

Thank you for posting this! I feel much the same.\nI was born in Toronto but my family moved to another city in Southwestern On. when I was 10. I pledged to move back and did in 2004 to become a student. I loved the freedom and vibrancy of the city, met many friends and had a wonderful time. Even as a student, working part time, I was able to afford a shared accommodation downtown and still have a bit of disposable income. \nAfter graduating college, I found full time employment and was able to live comfortably alone in my own 2 bd apartment in mid-town for many years. In 2012, I met my partner and we continued to live in North York in a 3bd rent-controlled unit. We could see the decline in the city over the next several years. We decided we would never be able to achieve what we wanted to by staying where we were so in 2018 we took the plunge and bought a home in Windsor and have never looked back (though Windsor also has many social/affordability issues) .\nIn all, I miss the Toronto I once knew and loved but the decline of the city is pretty shocking.

I'm from Asia and recently moved to Canada with my family to live a slower-paced and safer life. I've seen firsthand that the drug problem here is worse than it was back home, and they're being coddled with no plans to discipline or rehabilitate them. I asked my friends how I could defend myself and my family if a random drug addict broke into our house and stole our belongings; could I at least beat that person up until the police arrived? They said you couldn't because you'd be charged with assault. It's funny. \n\nApart from the crimes and exorbitant living costs despite living in a rural area, even Canadians who have lived in the country since birth are struggling to make ends meet. \n\nSome positive comments, Canada provided me with a work-life balance that was not possible in Asia due to the competitive nature of the corporate world. So I had time to spend with my family, and you don't have to travel abroad to see beautiful scenery. Canadians are also very accommodating and friendly, in contrast to where I came from, where people will not help unless it benefits them as well. The Canadians here are extremely friendly. So Canada is great because of its people, but I can tell you that the government consistently makes bad decisions about how to solve certain problems, such as drugs and harm reduction strategies. Another issue is that they do not recognize internationally trained professionals, which could have helped alleviate healthcare issues in our area, where we have many internationally trained nurses from the Philippines working as restaurant servers and janitors. We have doctors from Kenya who have to work as general laborers and in other odd jobs where they can use their profession and experience to help people. I am also an immigrant, but the government should strategically distribute us based on our qualifications. I chose a rural area because I don't want to add to the number of immigrants in big cities and instead want to contribute to the local economy by bringing my skills and experience to the pool. \n\nCanada is a wonderful country, and I continue to believe so, but the government must reward and do more for its people who are trying their best to make this country great.

I resigned from a comfortable position in a top international IT company when I decided to come to Canada, only because I saw Canada as a country that was the best, even unmatched in maintaining humanitarian values above any politics or foreign policy. I am now considering leaving like many others, not due to a lack of opportunities or living needs but a seemingly severe lack of morals, disregard for humanity, and undermining human rights for the sake of politics and foreign policies of the government amid the current carnage in Palestine. When you see hundreds of thousands of Canadians, including Jews, protesting on the streets of Canada, demanding that Canada push for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine, and see no reaction from the government because they are afraid to annoy the USA, you wonder if the government really represents the nation's will.

People immigrate to have better lives. When they come to Canada and realize it will take years for them to find the same job they had back in their own countries (if they are lucky enough to find one), they decide to return. People immigrate to build lives that they would not have been able to build in their countries. They don't come here to start from scratch and live in conditions that are worse than what they have left behind. They don't want to have to wait months for a simple medical procedure. They don't want to pay such insane rents. People immigrate to live more comfortable lives. If they work and pay taxes, they want to see the effect of their tax money on improvements. If the medical system is free but people have to stay with illness for a long time because wait times are too high, then what is the benefit of it? We bring in doctors and don't let them work. We bring in nurses and don't let them work. The same goes for teachers and many other professionals. If a country needs immigrants, it also needs their expertise and knowledge. You either need people or you don't. Stop this double standard.

The problem is canada doesn't let survive the small business and they support only chain business and has all monopoly, small individiual business can't survive in Canada, where ever u go u see same tim horton same walmart same supporstore same mecdownal same wendies same many many, every city looks same its like people are forced to eat what they serve there is no freedom for small business to grow in canda,, all food is full of GMO and organic things they don't import and all people got no choice and all is again monopoly everywhere. Then why people will like canda and and no place to grow,, all everywhere rules regulations no one feels like this country is their. Its hard to grow in canada, racism is on top, if u have a job u can only survive, lots of health issues in canada and taxes so high.

Canada is in a catch 22 situation: We need to reduce immigration to restore the trust needed to build prosperity (the research on this is absolutely clear - see Putnam, et al, for example.), and we need to maintain it to make up for labor shortages. The fact is, polls show that trust is at an all-time low between Canadians, and it is due to bringing in too many people who are self-segregating and not assimilating. We pumped massive excess cash into our economy during COVID, did not produce enough housing, introduced laws that severely constrained agriculture and dramatically increased the costs of food distribution, and brought in massive numbers of immigrants, among other things. The fact is, we have crushed the birth rate, made homes too expensive, and raised the cost of living to a point where people are desperate, and our school system has destroyed the enterprising spirit that built our economy in the first place.

So lgbtq + indigenous + non white = 90%? And in Vancouver and in Montreal, I see so many old white men, meaning they are mostly gay?
