On the other hand, refugees, given their unfortunate circumstances, really need to rely on a lot of social services and resources to help them resettle. The US has eliminated pretty much all non-humanitarian immigration that’s why immigrants are so demonized there. Americans only feel the drags of refugees and asylum seekers (even though ethically we need to protect them) and there is no selected immigration to balance that out. Yet this round of Canadian policy change is heading exactly that direction.\n\nIt used to be international students in Canada are not paying a lot more tuition than Canadian students. But Canadian universities saw how much money universities in the US are making so they asked the federal government to change the policy to enable them to charge international students several times the regular tuition (whereas in countries like France, international students actually pay less than citizens). So now Canadian universities rely too much on international students to operate and it becomes an exploitative relationship even before students step foot on the campus. The new PGWP eligibility is awful because students can make contributions in every field. The Ford EV one of my friends drive was made in Mexico. Another friend told me that her refrigerator and tv was made in Mexico as well. So, I think the general population is (including myself) a little ignorant about where the household items we use everyday come from. It's not just avocados, tomatoes, beer, and tequila and immigrants arriving from the southern border. As for Canada, we import most of our gas from there, as well as, precious metals. I suppose that if we are struggling financially now, what is coming our way might be a little worse for some people. I have friends that say that prices going up does not affect their budget at all. It does affect mine though. That's where we are.

It could work in an economy not dependent on excess and consumerism, but the US economy is propped up on speculation and buying out of want rather than need. Deflation is considered an economic failure in this country. We target 2% inflation for fear that without it, people will buy less now and then there will be a downward correction on output and then jobs. \nIn any case, broad tariffs won’t be the answer to lower prices. A global economy is an efficient one, but often unfair or unkind in specific localities. The US has benefited from globalization and low cost labor elsewhere for decades. But the pendulum swung too far and now many Americans are feeling left behind. Tariffs could bring back jobs but on a 5 to 10 year timeline, not one 4-year presidential term, much less in a year.
