It's truly heartbreaking to witness how things have unfolded between two countries that were once united. The only reason birthright citizenship was enacted was to deal with the issue of newly freed black slaves after the civil war, because technically they were not citizens before the civil war. It was an attempt to create a legal mechanism for these freed slaves to be made into US citizens, it was never meant to be used to be used as a loophole circumvent our immigration laws.
