Thank you for posting this! I feel much the same.\nI was born in Toronto but my family moved to another city in Southwestern On. when I was 10. I pledged to move back and did in 2004 to become a student. I loved the freedom and vibrancy of the city, met many friends and had a wonderful time. Even as a student, working part time, I was able to afford a shared accommodation downtown and still have a bit of disposable income. \nAfter graduating college, I found full time employment and was able to live comfortably alone in my own 2 bd apartment in mid-town for many years. In 2012, I met my partner and we continued to live in North York in a 3bd rent-controlled unit. We could see the decline in the city over the next several years. We decided we would never be able to achieve what we wanted to by staying where we were so in 2018 we took the plunge and bought a home in Windsor and have never looked back (though Windsor also has many social/affordability issues) .\nIn all, I miss the Toronto I once knew and loved but the decline of the city is pretty shocking.

I'm from Asia and recently moved to Canada with my family to live a slower-paced and safer life. I've seen firsthand that the drug problem here is worse than it was back home, and they're being coddled with no plans to discipline or rehabilitate them. I asked my friends how I could defend myself and my family if a random drug addict broke into our house and stole our belongings; could I at least beat that person up until the police arrived? They said you couldn't because you'd be charged with assault. It's funny. \n\nApart from the crimes and exorbitant living costs despite living in a rural area, even Canadians who have lived in the country since birth are struggling to make ends meet. \n\nSome positive comments, Canada provided me with a work-life balance that was not possible in Asia due to the competitive nature of the corporate world. So I had time to spend with my family, and you don't have to travel abroad to see beautiful scenery. Canadians are also very accommodating and friendly, in contrast to where I came from, where people will not help unless it benefits them as well. The Canadians here are extremely friendly. So Canada is great because of its people, but I can tell you that the government consistently makes bad decisions about how to solve certain problems, such as drugs and harm reduction strategies. Another issue is that they do not recognize internationally trained professionals, which could have helped alleviate healthcare issues in our area, where we have many internationally trained nurses from the Philippines working as restaurant servers and janitors. We have doctors from Kenya who have to work as general laborers and in other odd jobs where they can use their profession and experience to help people. I am also an immigrant, but the government should strategically distribute us based on our qualifications. I chose a rural area because I don't want to add to the number of immigrants in big cities and instead want to contribute to the local economy by bringing my skills and experience to the pool. \n\nCanada is a wonderful country, and I continue to believe so, but the government must reward and do more for its people who are trying their best to make this country great.

This is true of so many larger cities in the US and Canada. The main issues are affordability and mental health. Now as folks find themselves homeless, many start to self medicate (major drug problems). And by the way, many move into the larger cities hoping to find services or a way to survive, so they are not all native to those larger cities. In the US, I found driving from Portland OR to the Bay Area that many homeless now live in rural areas as well. I wish I had a real solution, we all know that it will take money, which no one wants to put out. Whichever direction it goes (incarcerating folks is way more expensive then mental health and housing services), it will take a lot of time to correct these issues. I do wish that people would stop pointing political fingers and work on solutions.

In Greater Toronto Area, 4 working adults in one home, you can survive. 10+ adults in one home, you can live luxury life. Alberta is more affordable but harsh winters. You can forget about getting any YT collar jobs in AB if you're not YT and Eng is not your first language. I don't understand why Cdn govnt wants to bring non-yt immigrants when majority of YT Cdns don't want to see non-yts in Canada. So, if you're not YT and Eng is not your first language, don't bother moving here unless you will be living with 10 adults in one home. lol

It blows my mind why people would want to move to America. All the American jobs are getting sent to Mexico. Everytime uaw negotiates a new contract and higher wages 15% of Americas auto industry shops move to Mexico.

Spent my whole life in Toronto. Even though I grew up in one of the poorest neighborhoods at the time, it was a paradise compared to the hole it is now. When I retire and my parents pass on, I will sell all and leave the asylum to the lunatics. Screw this place! I want to move to an area with NO social services to breed the rot that consumed the city of my birth.

We talked about this million times before and nothing changed. I moved my business to a red state for lower taxes, more freedom, much cheaper housing and I don't have to take the vaccine if I don't want to. Oh and also no censorship.

I teach ESL so I talk with a lot of newcomers and immigrants as part of my job. The case of one of my students sticks out in my mind. She originally came here from Ukraine because of the war. She wants to get PR status because she wants to settle here and make a life for herself and her family. She was explaining the process to me and she seemed really caught in a Catch 22. She held advanced degrees in mathematics and economics already, but in order to qualify here she would need to go back to school, which would require a different visa than the one she was here on. She was working, but at a low paying job where she was just making ends meet. So she has to decide whether to go back or stay, basically because of bureaucracy and no other reason. She was strongly considering going back home because of how expensive the cost of living is here. And I can't say I blame her. I was born here and if I had the resources, I would move. I would love to move abroad because the standard of living in most European countries is so much better.

I'm an immigrant from the UK, which is in someways worse than Canada and some ways better, both Governments are corrupt and beholden to the US Empire and huge Corporations. Tell me why I should choose this authoritarian, dystopian nightmare of a country, over my home authoritarian, dystopian nightmare of a country? At least the UK doesn't steal your hard earned money, for protesting the corrupt Government. But food is unbelievably more expensive and the UK is an island. My husband wants us to move to the UK, but I have fallen in love with this country, it's beauty and it's people. Housing costs,inflation are not just a Canadian issue. I am old enough to remember when interest rates went through the roof in the 80's and people lost their homes, and jobs were hard to come by including for my family. But things got better and they will again. I know a lot from working all over canada and they come for the free money and health care and school, as soon at they are legal canadians every single one I know/knew left because they don't want to pay the high tax and cost of living, 1 guy I was friends with for a year showed me what he got to come here and it was = to 10 years pay for me at that time. Then he sold the house and cars and left after his temp visa expired, I know of people in AB and on the east coast working here and living 5 and 6 guys in a 3 bedroom and they send every cent back to their own country so they can buy land and housing, For them it's a great get rich quick plan, The one guy I knew for a year offered to pay to have my car fixed and I said no but he insisted it was free on his free tax payer supplied credit cards, If I was not from here and they offered me all this money and stuff Id be here doing the same thing, 5 years here makes you rich when you go home. 2 bedroom condo in Mexico is $85g so if I offered you a good job that will get you a house paid off and lifetime of saving in just 5 years but you have to live in another country would you do it. 100% I would Im looking at my adult kids who will never own a home if they stay here vs the people coming over for 5 years then their set, All my kids are planning to move to a new country for this very reason they are saving and then getting out when the depression hits.

It's good that people are moving back to their own countries since canada is getting worse day by day as a country to live in. After being educated all you get to do is labour and they just don't want to let us grow. The taxes are so high, half your salary is gone to the government. Housing affordability is worsening. Plus the Canadian government just calls international students for their money but doesn't provide them with jobs because all canada has is labour so it's good that people are leaving Canada.

I think your video and the Leaky Bucket study have not addressed the first and major concern why immigrants are leaving. We moved here for our kid's future, the Future of Canada lays on generations to come. Yes when the free benefits run out it's on to the next country for more free benefits. If you are coming to Canada you are coming to become Canadian just like the rest of us. The average Canadian is living paycheck to paycheck and don't receive any of the free benefits that newcomers receive when they come to Canada. Like the song goes ,we built this city, and now you want to move in and take over. Like I said that only third generation citizens should receive benefits from Canada because we built this country in our image, a Christian community with Christian values and holidays.

Canada bends over backwards to welcome immigrants compared to many countries- what this report fails to mention is how many immigrants simply use Canada to get citizenship and then move back to their native countries with dual citizenship that gives them and their families medical care, and a free ride back here when their own unstable countries become dangerous, or those that use Canada as a temporary safe and generous harbour before moving on. Very handy. I believe our immigration system is broken - all our Canadian governments want are more and more warm bodies to feed an insatiable tax monster, without regard to the significant social and economic disruption poorly planned immigration causes. You are true man. I lived in Europe and the first month I landed there, I knew that I will never be able to set big goals and achieve them. When I decided to move in Canada, everything changed. having citizenship seems normal, but thinking about Europe (Italy) where i had to wake up at 4 AM to be able to find a spot in the line to renew my documents, I only had to worry about my personal growth. Nowadays, thank you my Lord I am a M. I do not want to say it, but it is true. IO am ready to set new goals. Good luck to everyone who wants to come in Canada, but you have to be very good in order to accomplish great achievements (discipline). Only the sky is the limit in North America.

Our birth-rate is low, so we do need immigrants, that being said, housing needs to keep up and so do appreciation of foreign experience. \nSome of the Ukrainian refugees that we welcomed in NL were doctors and nurses and they really wanted to start working, but were not allowed because they were not trained in Canada. This isn't even a foreigner issue, if a doctor/nurse wanted to move to a different province there are still obstacles, which doesn't make sense to me! Sure healthcare workers from other countries should be brought up to speed on the system, but at the end of the day, they still acquired the education and work experience to do their job and can provide proof of their credentials, it should not take years to work in Canada.

I think it drastically depends on your situation. Those who are living in an unsafe environment and want a place that has more safety, then it is definitely better to move to Canada. My roommate is from Venezuela and definitely Canada is 100 times better than where he was.

I have been living in London for 23 years. I came here when I was in my late twenties but I miss india like anything, specially now for last 4-5 years. I keep thinking that wish we stayed in India. Practically it’s all OK but emotionally now I want to be at home with my extended family and my childhood friends. I know many people here living for so many years, but could never make so kind of close friends. When you are older, you start missing home badly and look back and think if it was right to move this far from home. It’s not the perspective of everyone for sure but of many including many of the people I know. It’s lonely here.

Accurate. I was born in B.C. but moved here when I was 3 years old. I'll say this Toronto always had a level of crime rate so be careful of your surroundings. Crime rate dipped down in 2002. In 2018 moving back it is worse than ever before. A city that wants all the chiefs but how does one simply live here on the minimum wage bracket. If a city has a minimum wage said citizen should be able to afford rent. Ergo professionals could then afford upscale neighbourhoods. Toronto has always been expensive but this is not do-able I might go back to British Colombia if this gets worse over the winter. Ontario you lose another Canadian in this metropolis.

The problem is demand and demand is hugely increased by investors. Investors don't live in the place and in many cases they don't even rent the place. At lease half of those seeking to buy houses are investors. Therefore investors double the demand.\n\nHouses are limited supply whereas investors are numerous and have access to unlimited money either cash or loan from banks. We have created a housing market. It means we made it something like share market where everyone can put their money in it and buy as many as they want. During the pandemic demand for toilet paper became very high and there were limited supply. Supermarkets limited one or 2 packs per customer because it would be unfair for some to stack most of the papers and others have none. Some customers wanted to buy tons and fill their homes with toilet paper and they did. House and land is limited too. Why can't we do the same for homes? Demand is important and always going to be there from those who want to move there and live in it. Investors buy many homes and bid higher in value than normal people because they have more money and they know the price will rise. They raise the demand sky high. Specially if they're foreign investors. They can buy hundreds of apartments or houses and leave it empty.\n\nAs I mentioned, we do need certain amount of demand for housing and that demand is going to be always there by people who want to buy and live in it whether they're local or immigrants. Then you have a $5k deductible first! Just walking into the ER is $500 and THEN add on labs, x-rays, meds, etc. My son was in mental health treatment and our insurance capped mental health at $25k for life. \nThe biggest slap up my head, was when I found out I CAN'T collect my SSI. I paid a lot of taxes, since we made 6 figures/year. So, now I'm screwed, since they won't pay a former Permanent Resident. Had I been a citizen, I could get it. I've had about 8 friends and 2 relatives who have tried life in the USA.\nOne cousin is still in Colorado after moving there with her 2nd husband, an American, over 10 years ago. The rest have come back to Canada and the biggest general impression I get is that it is simply a huge relief to get out of there. That is a huge contrast to the people I know who had tried life in Mexico, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Europe, Thailand, Japan, VietNam, Australia, and New Zealand: far fewer of them have come back to Canada because they are happy with life there. And the ones who have come back all have things they miss about the countries and most want to go back someday.\n\nMost of the people I know who have come back from the USA are highly critical of the utter lack of a decent health care system in the USA, but for them it was a solvable problem because they had decent jobs and insurance while they were in the USA. What gave them so much relief when they came back to Canada was that during their time in the USA they never felt safe. There is something fundamentally and brutally fucked up about a country where every bank has armed guards, the mall cops are armed, half of the people in your neighbourhood are armed, you're scared to send your children to school, and every time you turn around you see a cop with his hand on his gun.

As a Canadian I am actually going to set up a business that's taking advantage of America's horrible healthcare system. I actually wanted to move to the United States every since I was a teen ager. I went to the Detroit area and they failed me in nursing school. I found white Americans to be quite feral and maintain sadistic tendencies and arrogance as necessary cultural value. Regardless my life in Toronto, Canada has turned into nightmare and I still think America is a better place simply because you have more options and job opportunities. Would I prefer to live in the United States? The answer is YES!!
