By these comments, Canadians hate immigrants even more than American white supremacists. This man is scared for himself and his family. His case is just ignorance. He doesn’t know the proper ways to go about it. Him getting a lawyer and what not has showed he’s a bit smarter than many immigrants seeking asylum but most cases people don’t know the proper way to migrate out of their countries. They just know that there are better and safer opportunities elsewhere. As for everyone whining about why he doesn’t speak English, not EVERYONE CAN LEARN AT THE SAME PACE. Hello, I'm Afro-Latin and I just have one question, it's Canada a good place for black people who want to go there to live, will my kids be save of racism being black????? And at this point there is not really a place free of racism in the whole world, very often I heard that if your are black and Latino you are f....k twice, like you have to work double or triple to be recognized, it doesn't matter your skill level. I've been doing a research about which country will be better for my family and raise my kids, and log time I was thinking that Canada was the way to go but I'm not so sure now, but thing is that when you try to search, at least in youtube or google places where black people can generally live without any concerns, there is almost none. ?!

These people heard Trudeau speak about open arms at the height of the Syrian refugee crisis. I don't remember his exact words but I'm sure he didn't mean come one, come all, forever and ever. Every country has immigration restrictions and it's sad that people who are uneducated or don't speak multiple languages don't have the resources to research their best options. This is where international, or bilateral assistance programs between countries need to help each other. Hell, I live in U.S., well educated, 64 yrs old and don't know specifically what our immigration laws are!

Why would everyone here assume he doesn't speak english?? I'm sure he is just far more comfortable with Spanish.... Maybe his english is imperfect? choppy? Who knows, maybe he doesn't speak english at all... but why would you immediately assume that?

A lot of people complain he doesn’t speak English. I’m sure he does speak English up to basic conversations, but for sure not as fluent as what he needs to explain his situation in this video. If all you do is labor work and never had a chance to go to a school or college, all you are exposed to is the everyday basic language necessary for survival. So stop judging based on a 8 min video!

I can't believe what's being said in these comments. So the fact that he didn't speak English in the interview is the only thing that sunk in? Ok. Many of the immigrants that come here , come for the opportunities: Work, food, shelter, etc. Learning English should be mandatory in all immigrants applying for citizenship but we can't disregard someone because they choose NOT to speak English. For all we know, this guy (I'm sure) understands and probably can speak some English but for the sake of the interview the producers mostly likely asked him and he chose to speak in Spanish.

The issue is that he's trying to gain refugee status on a personal basis. Even from what they're showing here in a fairly positive light, I'm not sure I follow how he could qualify.

I'm sure that ethnic screening happens in all countries, not just the white ones.

I'm white living in Europe, but I think that the way other people treat you is also very dependable on your facial expressions, on what the first impression you make etc.I have had numerous experiences in my life when going with friend (shopping, or organizing something) that because he looks more friendly or more attractive so people naturally speak to him first.Especially talking to females.Not sure how to fix it.Once people know me, it's much easier.Funny world.

Nice video, Derek. I'm gonna add something you didn't even mention. Here in the U.S., there is the Patriot Act, and a growing Police State. Our liberties and Constitutional rights are being trampled by the day. Our privacy is being lost at an alarming rate, and there are more checkpoints than ever before, tighter security measures at airports than ever before, metal detectors even at high schools for students just to attend class, and worst of all shootings of innocent people by cops (often homeless, mentally ill, etc.) than ever before. I don't know for sure, but I don't think Canada has the degree of the same problems, and if they do, they certainly aren't at the magnitude that they are happening here in the states. Those shootings are about 2,000-3,000 just in the last year!! Please be careful, especially in California, and know your U.S. Constitutional rights if/when you get stopped on the road or anywhere else.

I've never lived in Canada, we drive through from Alaska, it's absolutely gorgeous!!!! BC is a place I'd love to live. I'm sure I could google it but how do you go from living in one country to the other?

Canadians used to be the nicest people on earth. What happened? The PM Harper is ignorant about Islam as the Koran was the first time God gave women equal rights. Per The Book women are equal to men except by one degree which is strength so God commanded that men be the protectors of women. As to the wearing of anything on your head, God said nothing of this in the Koran. God said to cover your cleavage. Speaking as a white man I have to admit I don't quite understand the need for anyone to organize as a race in Canada. First generation clubs from whatever country, sure, but as a race? Is it the elephant in the room... American slavery?  I can't help but think that most perceived problems blacks have in Canada are due to American issues we see in movies and media.\nWe in Canada bend over backwards to offer opportunity to succeed. Why is the brother telling these guys to move away from the mosque? Whats the reason? Wealth doesn't equal happiness.\n\nNote that my views formed WHILE I was in the UK - specifically after 16 as there was no sixth form locally and I had to go to the city to study.
