Racism has always been in Canada, dont be fooled. It may not be as prevalent as in other countries but racism is in fact here in Canada, I grew up here, Im a black born Canadian and dealt with it all my life. Mostly just taunting and name calling but one thing is certain, wherever you find white people you will find a lot of ignorance and even the good ones seem to always be a step or 2 away from a racist rant when they agitated. Stop long enough to ask these landlords what kind of experiences they have had with minorities, i have heard about moving in large numbers of people after moving in and leaving without paying and bad smells from not cleaning. There are two sides to this story.

As a Mexican American I have faced all types of racism from people of different races, including my own. I lived in Mexico for a while when I was young and would get bullied by kids who knew I was born in the U.S. Teachers also treated me different; some treated me worse than they treated the other kids, and others favored me because I was American. When I moved to Philadelphia I attended a school that was predominantly black and asian. I was the only hispanic in my class. At the time Spanish was my main language and my English was “rusty,” which led to constant bullying from classmates. They would call me “dookie face,” tell me to “go back to my country,” and even had some girls put gum on my hair. I would cry every day. I later on moved to Chicago to an area that was mostly hispanic, and that didn’t stop the bullying, either. After I finally refined my English, I no longer wanted to speak Spanish unless it was to my parents. Yes, I guess the constant bullying pushed me to feel like I had to separate myself from my hispanic heritage. When my hispanic classmates spoke to me in Spanish I only responded in English, which would make them mad and they would think that I thought I was “better than them.” Anyway, that was long ago and now as an adult I can reflect on these things so that I don’t make the same mistakes. I get along with everyone and the only thing that changes how I feel about someone is their character, not their appearance.

The problem with the Punjab community in Canada is their old men and women that crowd the parks for little kids. They sit there all day long with their scary beards, scaring the kids away. Canada is diverse, but these people thinks they are still in Indian. Indians do have culture, but the Indians in Canada are rude, disrespectful & sometimes racist. Yh I said it. They just want to live & die in Brampton.

What does that say about the current situation? Asian Canadians tend to assimilate much better than other groups and it took a group of them a long time to do partially do so. Before I moved to Brampton, I had no idea HOW MANY Indians actually lived here. I'm of south Asian descent but I grew up here as a Canadian. I still keep my culture but I'm Canadian FIRST. It's true too, some of them don't believe in deodorant, holy shit I literally had to tell a guy who sat beside me on the bus that he smelled. I know it was rude but if someone doesn't tell these people, they will think not wearing deodorant is normal. I miss the Canada I grew up in. My friends were mostly white but there was a nice mix of us: white, black, asian so we all got along. Today, everyone is in their own groups, strangers are the enemy, there is so much more segregation than there has ever been. Not long ago at a Tim Hortons I heard an Indian guy who was clearly new to the country telling his friend he didn't have to learn English because everyone in Brampton speaks Punjabi, it was insulting hearing that.....Listen up Indians and any immigrants coming here: BEFORE you come here, learn English, LEARN the customs and learn the CANADIAN WAY. You owe it to Canada, give something back before you start taking.

It's not perfect but I rather these people have a place to stay while they are processed then locked in cages. I rather get more tax payers in the long run. Two years ago I went on my church's annual week-long missions trip to Guatemala and absolutely hated the fact that I couldn't understand what people were saying around me. I immediately started studying Spanish so I could go back without fretting myself into fits over not being able to communicate. If I can learn Spanish for an annual trip, he and others like him can learn English when they come to stay in the U.S.
