They did the same thing to my husband. He married a Canadian woman and had Canadian children... But that wasn't enough... growing up in canada, i felt left out in the blk community b/c i am a 5th generation blk cdn on mom's side and 3rd on my dad's - when other black ppl not canadian born met me - i tell them i'm cdn, but i always used to get the question - where are you really from - they were looking for me to say the islands - when i told them my paternal grandma was born in 1901 in canada - that's when the questions stopped. i've been told that b/c i wasn't from the islands, i had no culture in college, but a mbr of the black student society put him in his place i heard he got into a lot of trouble. i was asked what do we eat as in food as canadians what kind of music do we listen to - at our blk canadian weddings, the only carribean song played was hot hot hot by arrow - we played straight up r and b and motown. i hv been rejected by other blk men b/c i'm not west indian enough...it was hurtful. even with 'friends' they made of my cdn heritage but i used to think, why are you making fun of me knowing that my family and ancestors were in canada first - they were 1st generation - i live in the usa now and i'm with an african american man - he has never treated me as if i were different and he loves going w/me to canada. my parents told me it was jealousy on those ppl's parts - one guy i used to be friends with in college, when i went to his house, his mom was from the islands, when she met me - she said, 'you cdn ppl are loud' and that did it for me - i didn't date her son but when he met my parents, they never said any of that crap to him. in the usa, the african americans don't treat differently at all - my ex mom in law thought we were american but decided to live in canada - b/c she was surprised that blacks do live in canada. her other daughter in law's family were from the islands - but she gravitated more to my family and felt comfortable around them more than her family and this ex sis in law would brag about the islands this and that and she would make comments about my looks being skinny and such but it was jealousy - i didn't care much for her b/c she was very insecure. i felt once again, i was a young girl in college again - being around island ppl....i would love to meet drake and ask him did he feel left out and isolated because he wasn't from the islands - he makes me very proud being a blk canadian - his dad is african american and his mom is jewish. i still hv dealt w/racism not much with wht ppl, but with my own ppl - which is quite sad and on top of it-colorism, that also played a part from my family - being called pygmy, chocolate dip, nappy hair - it hurt but these so called relatives, they aren't all that anymore, they had hard lives as children...when ppl see something in you that is special and they don't have, that's when their ugliness shows -

Getting a visa or any form of legal residence in Canada is a pain in the ass, I know because I've tried. I was gonna move up there full time from Los Angeles at one point and I spent 10 full months applying and waiting and still got denied. I wasn't even a refugee either, they make you prove what you have to contribute to the country as far as skills and education and it's very difficult to get accepted

when I was 17 I was followed by a store detective. As I was leaving the store, in a very loud voice she accused me of stealing an item. Many people heard, and she had me go in the back storage area, demanding to look through my purse. I refused and told her the item in question I had placed on the shelf, as I did not have enough money to buy it. She told the stock boys not to let me leave and went to check the shelf after I refused to let her search my purse. She came back with the item and told me I could leave. I said I wasn`t going until she apologized to me. She said, ``I`m not going to apologize to you.` She sneered. The detective was black. I am white. I was the victim of racial profiling. This happened in a Shoppers. I wish I had known I was entitled to $8,000.00 like the lady in this film. I am sick of shows like these that racially target whites. To be fair, send a white person in a black neighbourhood store, and see what happens.

The most racism I experienced in school was from teachers. Its the most profound kind of racism, because they are authority figures. The thing is when your fellow students display racism it doesn't have the same gravity as it does when your teacher does it because you know your teacher does know better but they truly believe it.In University, I actually had a teacher give a lesson that was so tinged with racism that it really broke me down, because what I've come to realize is that so many people think that being racist is saying actual racist words and don't understand that perpetuating stereotypes are the most prevalent forms of racism.  It is demoralizing because it feels like a losing battle when your teacher is perpetuating racially disparaging ideas to an entire class, and you think about how many people are going to be influenced by that idea and in turn perpetuate it. I realized that this teacher really insidiously believed what she was saying was true, but that it just wasn't politically correct to say it. The main principle of white privilege is that white people get to be individuals but people of colour get grouped together by the most base stereotype of their race.  I don't think Black-focused schools are the solution. I think more integrated schools with diverse populations of students and teachers are the solution.\n Then there are concrete issues of race, space and the law. For example when you come to realize that carding continues in Toronto, and that most residents do not care that young Black men are being harassed and treated like criminals by the police because it does not affect their community, it makes you wonder if people are only inclined to feel empathy for those who look like them.

There are many problems with anti-immigrant rhetoric and one of them is the classification who is and who isn't an immigrant and the question of when does a person stop becoming an immigrant and become a Canadian? A significant portion of people living in Canada are first/second/third generation Canadians and so, how do we classify these people, are they immigrants or are they not? And what of their parents/grandparents who immigrated, are they? It's very important to note that without their ancestor parents, all these first/second/third gen Canadians will not be here and they are now 'Canadians' today because we had pro-immigration laws. Also, the idea of accessing services is by itself, very problematic. I spent the first 4 years of my life here paying high tuition fees as well as tax that are used to subsidize fellow Canadians' tuition fees yet I'm not able to access any government services. Following graduation, I worked as a worker on visa where my tax was no less than an average Canadian yet government services were very much inaccessible to me. It was only after I became permanent resident, that somehow everything suddenly became available to me. I have been tax paying 6-7 years before I became a PR here yet all those years, I wasn't able to access a single thing yet somehow, after I became PR, I'm eligible for everything? The tax argument doesn't make sense at all. I will be eligible to apply for citizenship in like a year and does that mean now I am one of you, Canadians?

I took one of these tests years ago, and I wasn't surprised to find out I had a moderate preference for African Americans over European Americans, because I was born and raised in Detroit, but I also found out I saw Asians as 'Less Foreign' than White people... And then this journalist gave that farzana lady the last word of her 'critical' views on Islam it just undid everything the Muslims were doing before her giving a clearer picture of Islam, farzana lady will just make people confused I mean those are her personal opinions but how does it help this piece? Also last time I checked following fashion trends is not synonymous to peer pressure as what journalist wants to suggest that girl was peer pressured in to wearing the scarf when she clearly explained she wasn't. And when that guy was talking about teaching women Islamic studies journalist is like but you just teach them Islam not anything else WELL it's a mosque that's what people usually do if they want to learn religion they go to place of worship, if they want to learn something else they go to school or university. Why is it that you have plenty to say about muslim women having their right to wear the burka but when I had to go to Jeddah when one of your stinking, rotten, filthy men, blew up my husband,s car, with him in it, that......... Because he couldn,t get out of his death bed to come to the airport to get me, they were going to send me back to the UK on the plane I had arrived in and..... I wasn,t allowed to leave that airport until I had a burka on! Was it easy for you and Hannah to get married? Will there be any times where you have to go back to live without her? My MIL tried to marry her bf who is Canadian and they had so many issues. He wasn't allowed to come here, she wasn't allowed to stay there more than 6 months. She tried to move some stuff over to his place while they were getting the paperwork straightened out and boarder patrol wouldn't let her through. They ended up splitting up due to all the citizenship issues.

I live in Northern Ontario, and I have never actually been to thr USA, but I know someone who moved to Milwaukee and moved back to Canada because he couldn't handle certain mentalities people had. He said it definitely wasn't everyone, but the whole gun thing freaked him out. He knew a lot of people who carried guns around regularily, and so he always felt he needed to censor himself so he didn't want to offend or make anyone angry, because of thr guns. His brother lives in California and he loves it there, but Milwaukee wasn't for him. It was an interesting conversation

and fyi, if it wasn't for the inventions of the arabs (how to make steel; performing difficult operations; make drugs from chemicals; morocco, an arabic country, set up the first 'madrasa' or university in the world; built complex clocks; changed the numeric system; astronomy) in the 8th - 13th centuries. you wouldn't have had the knowledge to build upon these scientific findings that you seem to love so much.
