This is a flawed test ,you get similar results from a whole range of physical characteristics such as beards spacing of eyes,symmetry of face and A study based on accents(UK Study) showed similar results north south based on where test was conducted being people being more comfortable/trusting of the society/group you grew up with is normal.\n If you test any racial/ethnic group you are likely to get similar results so it proves humans are human wherever they are.\n Please don't get me wrong racism exists and apart from being aware of unconscious bias toward your own identified group there is little most can do.\n\n\n This of course very different to overt and deliberate conscious acts of racism.

Who has the time to pour over every detailed highly technical looking instrument result? of their legal decisions recomended to a judge in business law and other kinds of court rooms and sometimes those automated results are being used to push medical diagnosic labels and then use them in a court of law whenever a malpractice suit is being waged.

There’s a common saying which states that the difference between Canadians and Americans is that “while Americans side with their fellow citizens against the government, Canadians side with their government against their fellow citizens.” This is stereotype is the best explanation as to why Canada can’t see to develop a viable market economy or compete with other nations on innovations in STEM or the arts. Now send a teenager to these places and have them do the same thing. Any race.\nAlso, something was wrong with that racial biases test. It's supposed to change both the race AND the associated word between each photo, otherwise you don't have to read both. The test as administered can't be passed and its results don't have any meaning otherwise. You have to mix up all three things, the photo, the race word, and the associated word, or else it doesn't function correctly. The applicability of the test itself also fails if you don't adjust it to a baseline, as the idea of a 'zero bias' human being simply doesn't exist. Getting your bias down to the level of random noise is the best any human being can do, regardless of their own race.

Psychology student here. In the interest of accurate information, I would like to point out some flaws I find with some of the studies in this documentary and question the conclusions reached. I understand that CBC Marketplace are not personality psychologists and therefore cannot be expected to produce the same quality of work as a scientist. However, I think it is worthwhile to think critically about the information in the media that we consume. I am also open to anyone who wants to engage in debating the contents of this documentary.\n\n\nThe following are some notes I took while watching the documentary outlining the individual hypotheses of the studies I think are flawed and descriptions of their respective accompanying errors. \n\n\nThere are three possible research questions, and thereby dependent variables, being answered by the apartment hunting studies.\n1. If there is no discrimination between the white man and the first-nations man, then they should get equal treatment, including quotes and availability, when apartment hunting. \na. Could the gender of the landlord be a confounding variable (perhaps men are more discriminatory than women)? \n \n2. If there is no discrimination between the white man and the first-nations man between Toronto, Montreal, Regina, and Victoria, then they should get equal treatment, including quotes and availability, when apartment hunting. \na. Could total apartments visited be a confounding variable? (4 in Toronto, 3 in Montreal, Regina, and Victoria) \nb. Could the gender of the landlord be a confounding variable (perhaps men are more discriminatory than women)? \nc. They only showed the black man apartment hunting in some of the trials. I am considering him out of the study for consistency purposes. The first-nations man is the only one who got unfair treatment in the footage of apartment hunting. \n \n3. Possible hypothesis: If male landlords/agents are more discriminatory than female landlords/agents, then the white man and the first-nations man will get different treatment at different Canadian apartments in equally diverse cities. \na. Don’t know all the information about the genders of the landlords/agents, not all the footage is shown, but the ones where they get ripped off are male. The others shown are female. The remaining interactions are not shown.\n\n\nThere are also some factors that may have influenced the racial bias survey and, in my estimation, rendered it scientifically unreliable.\n\n\n1. The bias survey and accompanying tests at the CBC attributed the differences between the studies to unconscious racism. What if it was just due to familiarity with certain racial groups over others? \na. The black participants had no bias between European-American and African Americans, supposedly indicating no racism, while the white and first-nations participants did, supposedly indicating racism. Is it possible that another interpretation of this result is that bias is a function of familiarity: that we are comfortable with the majority demographic in the geographical location we live in, as well as our own kind. Therefore, the black guys are less biased against black people due to being both black and living in a white majority demographic? \nb. The participants took the survey knowing the objectives of the researchers was to study racial discrimination. They might have influenced the answers they gave \nc. Whether the participants agreed with identity politics or not was a confounding factor that was not controlled . You can only be racially unbiased biased if you think that racial identity is a means of accurately viewing the world. People who do not believe in the existence of identity politics may answer the questions quite differently, which could be a different reason for the results.\nd. I took the study myself. The words that participants were required to match were a mix of adjectives and nouns. It is known within psychology that nouns have higher levels of imagery. This was not properly controlled and therefore is another confounding variable. \n \nAll the other studies looked fine to me. I welcome any discussion on my observations.

To be fair the situation is difficult, having worked in retail before there is plenty of shoplifting on a daily basis so I can understand why staff are trained to use procedures to make shoplifting less likely, it does result in an unpleasant experience for customers if they are misprofiled and unfortunately people do misjudge or assume that certain types of people are more likely to steal. A lot of shoplifting is actually surprisingly done by old people, and its usually not intentional, sometimes they just simply forget to pay.

Over the protests of parents, they put white children on buses and sent them to African schools and vice versa.\n\nThey tried with money, special programs, relaxed standards, and endless hand-wringing to close the “achievement gap.” To keep white backlash in check they began punishing public and even private statements on race.\n\nThey hung up Orwellian public banners that commanded whites to “Celebrate Diversity!” and “Say No To Racism.”\n\nNothing was off limits if it might salvage the experiment.\nSome thought that the Talented Tenth would lead the way for African people. A group of elite, educated Africans would knock down doors of opportunity and show the world what Africans were capable of. There is a Talented Tenth. They are the African Americans who have become entrepreneurs, lawyers, doctors and scientists. But ten percent is not enough. For the experiment to work, the ten percent has to be followed by a critical mass of people who can hold middle-class jobs and promote social stability. That is what is missing.\n\nThrough the years, too many African people continue to show an inability to function and prosper in a culture unsuited to them.\n\nDetroit is bankrupt, the south side of Chicago is a war zone, and majority-black cities all over America are beset by degeneracy and violence. And Africans rarely take responsibility for their failures. Instead, they lash out in anger and resentment. Across the generations and across the country, as we have seen in Detroit, Watts, Newark, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, and now Ferguson, rioting and looting are just one racial incident away.\n\nThe white elite would tell us that this doesn’t mean the experiment has failed. We just have to try harder. We need more money, more time, more understanding, more programs, more opportunities. But nothing changes no matter how much money is spent, no matter how many laws are passed, no matter how many African geniuses are portrayed on TV, and no matter who is president.\n\nSome argue it’s a problem of “culture,” as if culture creates people’s behavior instead of the other way around. Do the same social experiment but have all three wear a Canadian military uniform and see how that goes. I bet you'd get mixed results which i think is kind of interesting.

15:25 'take the test ... ' ? There are people who know how to get the result they want from the second test which you claim is difficult to deceive since it tries to measure subconscious bias as opposed to the first which you claim measure more overt bias and thus people can deceive it.

This is just ridiculous, these are just a series of assumptions, why didn't you confront the people to get some kind of understanding for those results? And stop confusing stereotyping and racism, there's a big difference.

Canada has changed drastically and racism has become very rampant...so very sad. If they did this experiment now in 2019-2020 the results would be so much worse.

I don't know if the computer test is as accurate as it could be. I know for myself when I took it presenting the e key as bad and black and the i key as good and white then reversing it once you got in a rhythem really messed me up. There were many words that I had a brainfart and had to refer back to the labels to remember the keys. I think if it was presented in the reverse order it would probably change my results.

Try Los Angeles. All this blaming white people is ridiculous. Of course you go in an all white city youre going to make whites look like complete racists. Come to L.A and perform these same tests. Some sketchy research going on here.As with just about every test ever, the result can be predicted by the questions\n\n\nI profile people every day of my working life and yes ethnicity does feature in my assessment but then so does gender, mannerisms, vocalization, demeanor and every other trait the individual displays.

I would bet if a black guy that lived in a population of 98% blacks, he would have the same or similar results on the computer test as the white guy. I would also bet that if a white guy lived in the opposite population he would have the same or similar results as the black guy.

I don't think they should be uncomfortable with those results. Most people lean toward what they are surrounded by...and depending on where black people are located, they are surrounded by white people in person and/or in media. Our concepts of safe, pleasant, and beauty are manipulated the same as everyone else where we are. That's why you get little white girls who prefer white dolls...and you get little black girls who prefer white dolls... I'm not surprised that the black men had no preference. I also wouldn't be surprised if they had preferred Europeans.
