The government could try to incentivise families to have more children. Canada like most Western nations has a low birthrate that does not replace itself, therefore immigration is needed to fill in the population gaps. So long as couples have one child or less, the government will have to turn to immigration. A declining population would devastate the economy. Don't believe the hype that not having kids is a favour to your country, it's not, they'll just import others.

When I migrated twenty years ago from Ukraine, we had to apply and wait for 2-3 years for visa. Application form had questions about education, work experience, health, criminal records. You had to get certain amount of points to get permission to come. Looking at population in Canada right now, I doubt most of newcomers had to go through the same strict selection.

The high cost of living has made it 'unlivable' for even native Canadians who are earning 6-figure incomes. Canada's system need improvement. That's an understatement if I ever heard one. When the necessities of life are made difficult to acquire and the government doesn't do it's job to fix it, you don't have much of a choice but to leave. It's basic survival. One of the basic necessities of a functioning government are to make sure its population is fed, yet I don't see anything being done about it. Lots of talk. Absolutely nothing done.

Canada wants young qualified immigrants who would do small jobs and pay heavy taxes to pay for the sick and ageing Canadian population, and themselves remain in perpetual poverty, without owning a house or caught in a merciless mortgage payment system. Many immigrants are not choosing to sacrifice their lives for that.

At the same time, the flood of cheap labour reduces wages making housing even more unaffordable. Moreover, a flood of cheap labour hampers the transition to higher value added businesses by encouraging lower value businesses, thus further limiting income growth. Productivity growth is the an essential way forward to affordable housing. The answer is to stem the flood of migrants until rising wages meets lower housing costs. Also, Canada needs to lower its overall population if it is serious limiting its carbon footprint in this cold climate with long distances between cities. Higher productivity with higher wages meets lower housing demand caused by limiting immigration!

Its funny when people talk about the quality of Canadian health care. For example, BC Cancer is one of the best in the world. Canada is on the cutting edge of many health care procedures. Yes, its hard to get a primary care physician but that is because the US is throwing enormous amounts of cash at Canadian doctors and nurses. Canada still keeps up pretty darn well especially when considering Canada has only a FRACTION of the US population and much fewer resources and funds available. My family has never suffered from our health care system in the past 60 years. 1 family member had a quadruple bypass - no bills 2) cancer - no bills 3) emergency c-section w air transport to city 400 mils away - $360 for air ambulance 4) emergency appendectomy - no bills 5) Heart atttack w stint - no bill 6) MRI and CATscans - No bills 6) 3 ADHD diagnosis w mental health care support - no bills 7) industrial accident with crushed hand - no bills 8) Electrical accident with burns throughout body - no bills 9) burns from an oil fire - no bills 10) fall into fire pit w subsequent 3rd degree burns on leg - no bills 11) leg amputation from type 1 diabetes - no bills. And then there are all the little things that happen day to day. In each event, we received top notch care and services. So, you might earn more in the US but we save more in Canada and very few suffer from it. A lot of complaints? Most bad experiences are shared whereas positive ones are not. I think if people on both sides really looked, the US health care fails many more people per capital on a daily basis than in Canada. US insurers are known to abandoned people when they become overly expensive and its not unusual to not have choices in drugs or care options.

the real answer is - lack of big canadian companies, real-estate dependent economy and the need to continously keep pumping money in the universal healthcare. As older population in canada retire, they need young people to keep paying taxes to keep things running and thats why canada keeps bringing in a huge number of immigrants.

The thing I will say about housing as someone who lives in Manitoba— housing in Canada is not all built equal. 1 million dollars is a standard house in Ontario, but pretty damn nice if you live in Manitoba, especially if outside of Winnipeg. I married my spouse and moved to the United States from Canada. Before, I didn't give the US much thought and merely loved travelling to a few of the locations. Having said that, even after spending five years there, I have never witnessed a country and a population as divided as the US. You proudly display your flag, yet you're so racist, illiterate, and a bible-thumper that it disgusts me. The United States is not the most free country in the world, despite what the public believes and thinks. In reality, it is also depressing to observe how the healthcare system handles people. The social safety net is completely missing, and by that I mean that most jobs don't pay for maternity leaves or vacations unless you work at a senior level or for a high-end company. The political system is so rigged that it is understandable why people are tired of voting every two years, and perhaps even every year. Most certainly, especially since your elections begin almost exactly when the previous one finished. I suppose I could go on forever, but I'll stop here. Although Canada is not perfect, is not free from controversy or problems, and is not the best at everything, we are able to concede defeat, acknowledge that someone was wrong or that we might have done better, work together with one another, and express that we are SORRY. Yes, it is a word that is never used in the US, and that is also the issue. I'm pleased to be back in Canada, where I belong, and I regret ever leaving. Yes, returning to Canada feels peaceful and inviting compared to travelling to the US, where every trip involves an interrogation to ensure that you don't remain too long. When you think about why a country would keep its doors open to immigration, you can kind of picture the life as an immigrant in that country. Though Canada is not a coutry that's been around for a year or two, population still at only around 38 million, they still need a lot of labor force and tax payers to further develop as a country and maintain the current level of welfare I assume. As everything is give and take in life, what you look for in immigration is well matched with what you can offer as an immigrant, everything works out fine. If you want leisure and take advantage of their civilization only, however, you either need to have enough wealth to cover or contributed to the society so much that you deserve a life of those that have already contributed building that country to the level that it is at. I think that only makes sense.

I have been living in Toronto for more than 2 year now and in addition to their contribution to India, I have huge respect for the Punjabi/ Sikh community in Canada. Despite whatever derogatory comments the locals might have, reality is they are honest and extremely hardworking people. The seva offered to everyone at various Gurudwaras is just so emotionally overwhelming. Unfortunately, there is one section- mostly the international students who have recently arrived seem to be influenced by Punjabi pop music and try to emulate which looks absolutely cringe and stupid. You are supposed to move to the worst provinces with no services so you can build these empty places in Canada. My nana is from the UK originally and she has been living in Canada for 40+ years now and still has not become a Canadian citizen, not because she couldn't but because she never had to. She gave birth to my mom in Canada making my mom Canadian. I was born in the United States but since my mom was a Canadian citizen I was also a Canadian citizen. A lot of people like to bring up the housing crisis as a potential downside to having a bunch of immigrants but that just isn't the case. We have one of the lowest population densities of all of the countries in the world, and yet we all choose to live in high concentration areas and those that own the land in and around those concentrated areas know they can charge whatever they want because if you're not near the main 1-3 cities in your province it drastically cuts down on your land's value as far as housing goes so there is no incentive for anyone to build housing out there. Build more houses, we have the space. Figger it out.
