I live in Toronto, Canada.\n\nFirstly, their are 500 men,women and children being placed in hotels temporarily. Much better than cages! \n\nSecondly, these individuals have already gone through the immigration process, hearing claims, back ground checks, medical checks. So these individuals in hotels have already been accepted to stay in Canada. They are in hotels due to Housing shortage issue. \n\nThird, way more illegal immigrants have been detained and removed from Canada. \n\nFourth, most of these people are families. Canada is very skeptical of accepting males. Sorry guys! \n\nFifth, these hotels have a contract with the government. These are the same hotels that were used to temporarily shelter Syrian refugees. Usually 3-4 families stay in one hotel. 500 people won't be staying in the same hotel. Plus the hotels charge the government an insane amount. So they make money. \n\nSixth, more than 10% of hotel cleaning jobs go unfilled. Guess what? Most of these asylum seekers end up working in the hotels they're staying in because of program called Employing Newcomers in Canadian Hotels Project. \n\nDon't worry about us America we know what we're doing. I’m always scared to get accused of shoplifting, not because I’m black but just because I take ages to look at 1 article. I can stay more then 1 hour in the store. I usually do every aisle even the ones that don’t concern me like the baby section. I just like to see what is new, what is available. \nI live in a country where shoplifting is not really an issue, so I’m used to doing what I want in the shops. He is not speaking English and expecting to find a job in English speaking country? To all the people saying why dont these immigrants stay in their county to make it better---here is a little think piece because i used to say the same thing\n\ni used to say the same thing but we are blindsighted by your american privilege. So if you were in such a dire situation, dont you think you would do anything to get out? There are many problems with anti-immigrant rhetoric and one of them is the classification who is and who isn't an immigrant and the question of when does a person stop becoming an immigrant and become a Canadian? A significant portion of people living in Canada are first/second/third generation Canadians and so, how do we classify these people, are they immigrants or are they not? And what of their parents/grandparents who immigrated, are they? It's very important to note that without their ancestor parents, all these first/second/third gen Canadians will not be here and they are now 'Canadians' today because we had pro-immigration laws. Also, the idea of accessing services is by itself, very problematic. I spent the first 4 years of my life here paying high tuition fees as well as tax that are used to subsidize fellow Canadians' tuition fees yet I'm not able to access any government services. Following graduation, I worked as a worker on visa where my tax was no less than an average Canadian yet government services were very much inaccessible to me. It was only after I became permanent resident, that somehow everything suddenly became available to me. I have been tax paying 6-7 years before I became a PR here yet all those years, I wasn't able to access a single thing yet somehow, after I became PR, I'm eligible for everything? The tax argument doesn't make sense at all. I will be eligible to apply for citizenship in like a year and does that mean now I am one of you, Canadians?

Most the retail places i am not sure.. and I am not going to say that racism doesn't happen in these stores because i don't know for certain.. but i am going to post something to think about.. If their best buy is like the best buy where I live.. I knew people who worked best buy.. and certain floor reps get paid at least in part via commission.. or at least they use to.. typically the ones that approach you are the ones working to make sales.. they will usually only do so in certain areas though.. such as Computer area, home entertainment area, appliance area, phone area, POSSIBLY game area particularly if they notice you looking at the consoles, and occasionally I get approached when i am looking at personal entertainment stuffs such as the decent headphone and ipod/mp3 player area... If you stick to CDs, movies and stuff that you can just grab .. typically they wont bother you much.. unless you linger there too long.. then a floor rep might think you might need help looking at something.. In my experience they are just overly hover because they have to be.. but unless you are looking at something that is a focus of sales or a board employee finds you .. you almost have to hunt down reps to help you with something..

I know racism exist being Mexican living in Mexico, I have experienced that. Although the shopping and looking for apartment experiment is great, has anyone stop and think yes it is about race or color of the skin but also a interesting point is your clothing and overall appearance instead of the skin sometimes, when shopping if I see someone entirely dressed in black with hat and some sunglasses isn't that suspicious (of course is discriminating but I have to use that example in order to make my point) instead of actual color of the skin? I think that's another aspect to further study, how you dress and the image you project is a factor for discrimination itself, instead purely based on the race.

I'm also Canadian and moved to the USA to marry my (now) husband, and I definitely notice some major differences. I think much of this really depends on where you're living in the US. I spent most of my life in Ottawa, and now live in South Central Pennsylvania. I'm surrounded by hillbillies, haha. In some ways healthcare is better in the US - I have waited much less time for health care, and also if you're paying in cash for the doctor many places offer a discount here. And I hear you on Amazon Prime! I use it all the time here! Not to mention so many cool vegan foods I could never get in Canada are easily available here.

I can see westerners being freaked out by the women who cover their face. I myself was like wtf when I seen a women with covered face for the first time back in northern Virginia, and I am from Ethiopia - a country that has a big Muslim population, more than 30%. We live among Muslims peacefully, because we respect our differences, but the ones back home do not really cover their face so I was not used to it. Really we should do better than creating differences, there is no better race or religion, all humans are the same, we all practice the 7 deadly sins religiously. and all the people commenting saying they hate Muslim and what it stand for, what religion are you because the Bible teaches compassion, it does not say to hate what you don't understand.

I'd like to address this to the woman who went to one of Trump's rallies dressed as a Moslem with her head covered with a scarf and having a sign that reads, 'I come in peace'. I don't know why she was asked to be escorted out, but by her own words the people in the crowd were throwing questions at her as to whether she had a bomb under her cloak. Well, whether she knew it or not, she provoked the crowd by wearing the mark of a Moslem - her cloak. Also, by going to the rally dressed the way she was, she knew before hand that she'd be treated that way. On her part, I see that as provocation. Had she gone plainly dressed or attired like everybody else, there would have been no adverse reaction toward her. I don't know what she could have said why she was asked to be escorted out, but she fully knows that the whole of America had been given the real and true picture of Islam - one of terror, murder, beheading, bombs, war, and blood. How do Moslems expect the most compassionate, kind, benevolent people in the world to act? So, please, use your common sense and do not see America as the enemy, the aggressor, or the provocateurs. They're not. They are just being vigilant knowing that the enemy could be so sly, cunning and untrustworthy. Islamic people,we welcomed you to our country. Don't think that we are not watching you. We have given you a new start for a happy life compared to the life you have had in your native lands, but we are guarding against an invasion that your evil governments have designed for our beloved country. The truth of the matter is that you are our guests in our country, and you don't have he right to demand of us what you like, especially when you want us to change our laws just to accommodate or please you. The more attacks you perpetrate against Americans, the more we will be true to our resolve to deport you. Good Moslems, show your rage against the radicals amongst you. If you don't, you'll be sorry, because willy nilly, you'll be affected too. You cannot be in America and refuse to live by the laws we live by.

The issue is islam, not all muslims. Unfortunately those two often go hand in hand, making it hard to criticizes islam without people thinking you are criticizing all muslims, which isn’ the case. \n\nThe issue with the religion of islam is that it is inherently not peaceful (If you want to discuss why that is more so the case than other religions we can do that). This would mean no more free speech (and far more dire consequences) for others not of islamic belief under sharia law. Sharia law is a set of religious political laws used in the majority of middle eastern Islamic countries and cultures. It is truly a backward and barbaric set of laws, incompatible with democracy and I encourage you to investigate that claim. \n\nSo essentially decreasing islam in any scenario will also decrease the political climate it wants to live in. And not only live in, but given to text in the Koran, effectively dominate. Religious assimilation and toleration is not part of the religion. And in the small case that it is, those religious peoples are second class citizens. \n\nSo you can see how it may sound harsh to say “get rid of islam/muslims” if you are ignorant to the fact of both their possible separation and islam’s eventual political goals. \n\nNot all muslims want sharia law or are as fundamental/radical as others, but that distinction can be hard to make for many people, when a lot of them are silent. All you see are the riots and bombings across the globe by radical islamists, with little or no condemnation by the former. There is so much negativism associated with Islam and all Muslims get tarred with the same brush. They frighten us. Their dress is alien to us. ISIL and other groups do unspeakable things in the name of their religion. Their religion is too demanding. Christianity and other religions can adjust to scientific facts. We KNOW the world is round and there are other worlds, so far unpopulated, out there. Islam seems to demand adherence to its core beliefs written centuries ago and makes no concessions to emerging facts. Religion is the main influence in the life of Muslims and their Imams seem to have a lot to do with governance and education, instead of the separation of church and state to which we are used. If you come to Canada to live, then adjust to our values or leave, please. This doesn't mean that you have to stop attending a mosque but please discontinue the scary body coverings and start treating your women as equals, not chattels. Even some women will argue with that last bit, but why does a woman have to cover up and a man does not? This is NOT equality.
