The reliance on tuition dollars to cover basic operational costs is an inevitable result of decades of government austerity policies that have systematically gutted the post-secondary and other public sectors. The disparity between domestic and international tuition costs followed, a disparity that has been gradually increasing as universities find themselves in increasingly desperate financial situations - with limited sources of revenue. If direct government payments were increased to pre-1990 levels (and I would be willing to bet that most Canadians would approve of their tax dollars supporting education and training programs for Canadians), it would allow universities and colleges to manage their finances without disproportionate reliance on tuition - in particular international tuition. Bottom line - resuming adequate and equitable funding for post-secondary education must be front of mind while discussing the implications of lack of housing for international students. The point about cuts to public funding is underplayed and not well-contextualized in this CBC analysis - which just barrels on to band-aid fixes (like capping numbers or building more housing). The funding model itself needs to be fixed. Let's change the model from provincial to a provincial/federal hybrid funding model. And while we're at it, let's revise the funding model for healthcare. Why not do a sequel segment on that.

Many years ago I had lunch with a Blue Cross rep trying to sell our firm a group insurance plan. She admitted that even basic limited coverage in California cost way more than what we as an employer were paying for our government health insurance. My point is, sure, your company provided health insurance may seem to be free to you, but imagine the hit your employer takes on the bottom line for it. I am all for those who want to migrate to our country. However, we need to fix problems at home. How and why is it we are allowing migrants to effortlessly acquire a higher standard of living than the majority of natural born citizens by crossing an imaginary line? I know there are families who risk their lives and work tirelessly to provide something better for them and theirs. As a father of three young children, trust me I get it! However, natural born citizens get whatever’s at the bottom of the barrel compared to the amenities given to immigrants. It needs to stop at least for now.

I wanna give my two cents as a Jamaican who lived in Canada,Germany and the us for me i wanna see the us is better interms of making money. It's better to get around , open business, hustle it's have that go-getter capitalistic mentality, Canada and Germany are similar. In Germany its haaaard to get anything done and bureaucracy will end you. Canada is a bit better and less bureaucratic. The us is a play ground filled with variety of everything and did I mention how easy it is to make money. Canada and Germany habe similar health system but in Germany things get done quickly, the us system is good if you have money. Racism is in all three but Germany and Canada are kinda not in your face, Americans will be in your face though, to me i prefer the america racism at least i know who to be aware of but in CA and ger you don't know who your enemies are because they will smile with you while not liking you. For kids it's like this , i would raise my kid in Germany because they have the kids are so well mannered and well behaved but i will let them experience american high school . Canada is waaay more peaceful , Germany cleaner. The bottom line is if you are a young ambitious Person the us is for you, but to retire I'll choose Canada but let my kids grow in Germany.

This is a systematic issue to be blamed on our very own federal government. \n\nCanada has an aging population and needs a constant influx of cheap young workers to keep the businesses going.\n\nWithout the cheap indian, phillipino, Vietnamese, Brazilian and other workers from developing nations, cheap labor will become harder and harder to come by. \n\nWages will have to go up to face the labor shortage, which would harm the bottom line or the richest 10% of the population that own and run these businesses. \n\nCanada is exploiting these poor kids, and is changing its own face in the process.

Well, I live in Sweden and I bet we pay more income tax than you do in Canada, some of the taxes goes to health care, unemployment benefits, and your retirement benefits, Every welfare state is expensive, You may get more pay in USA but if you ever get hospitalised, you're in for a rude awakening, you should check, there are many immigrants here in Sweden as well and the weather is pretty much the same as in Canada. We get at least 4 weeks vacation here in Sweden. I'm from ?? and it's natural that after working many years abroad, many choose to go back to their country of origin at some stage, me I go back home to Jamaica ?? as much as I can but still prefer to live in Sweden, I never mind the winter months, I can always travel to a warmer country and continue to enjoy life. In your opinion/to your knowledge, do immigrant teachers easily pick up their trade? I'm a high school teacher and am thinking about emigrating. I'm from the Netherlands, so the financial bottom line is pretty much the same, if not slightly better in Canada. I worked for 2 years in the US, near San Francisco, and I miss the way of life, there was just more to do and more nature, I've been thinking about going to Canada because the climate is somewhat more alike to my own, the country is better set up than the US, and I love the nature.

Canadian citizen here. It isn't just immigrants; I encountered the anti-intellect societal mentality as well. I had difficulty when applying for entry-level jobs in my field becuase I had a Master's degree and some of the competition (that was usually accepted) had only Bachelor degrees. The critical problem is that a number of companies (but not all) want to hire the dumbest people that are able to do the job, on the presumption that lower education = lower risk of the employee quitting = lower wages, i.e. cutting the bottom line instead of innovating. This also stems from incompetent management who will only hire people lower-qualified than themselves so that they emotionally feel superior. I then got a European Commission PhD scholarship in Poland and have just moved there.

In Toronto, there are good reasons for this. Bottom line, you can't tell someone who to rent to.

It sounds nice to say “Everyone has a human right to go where they want.” It isn’t so simple. If people come illegally, they affect everyone in the new country and all the people coming legally. If you detain them together with their family, you are incarcerating children, if you take the parents only you break up families. If you send them back with no detention and no appeals, you miss cases with legitimate grounds to have an exception. This guy is an absolute disgrace, and is nothing but a bottom feeder. \n\nHere are my reasons why:\n\n1. Lived in the US for many years, yet chooses not converse in English. \n\n2. Thinks on the lines that hard working class citizens & legal immigrants will pay for the welfare of him & his entire family. \n\n3. Does absolutely no research in immigration laws, despite spending that many years in the system, and decides to enter illegally hoping everything is kumbaya on the other side of the border. \n\n4. A dirt bag for no reason whatsoever. \n\nI myself am not a citizen of either these countries. I personally would love to live and work there, however in the future I will choose to apply and enter legally, and encourage everyone to do the same. These asshole illegal immigrants ruin it for everyone else, just look where the US immigration system is at. It's an absolute mess!

I was born in Seattle and left to Canada (married) when I was in early 20's!  This then was a good change for me as Vancouver was a great city compared to Seattle, moved right downtown and had a blast so for a young person (then) was great.  Met some great people from all over the world and had health care, medical/Dental etc.... I worked in the greater Vancouver area for 8 years and it was tough, very strict, and did not help that I was from the states, white bread Canadian seemed a bit jealous that I was there, sometimes not very friendly.  The Europeans I met were actually better to deal with and I got along quite well with them.  The cost of living was about the same as in Seattle.  After about 8 years being in Canada and working hard I saw America booming and the Canadian dollar was as low as $.62 cents (in late 90's) so I took my craft from Vancouver and brought it to the US just across the border, I became much happier working in the States, I took a little bit of bs but not bad from some that I had a Canadian accent (go figure when I moved up there I had a twang) I really never left the united states I will always be American and I have been still working in the US for over 20 years and deal with mainly Americans on a daily basis from all over the State of Washington.  Depending on where you grow up or end up you should never see a border Seattle and Vancouver have more in common than Vancouver / Calgary in fact most Canadians don't care much for the other provinces.  After 30 years of being part of both countries, I can say that people are people both have great offerings and if you took the best of Canada and America to combine then we would all prosper, there is so much both can learn from each other.  Bottom line:I take the best of both worlds and what they have to offer, yes, I have found less expensive goods in Canada than what they cost in the states.  I have seen it from both eyes, and if you cant be open culturally then stay away.
