From Canada: Sorry but we did this to ourselves by not growing our economy as we could have done, by not expanding energy and trade, by being led by a non-leader who panders only to the east and disrespects the west, who spends money like it’s on fire. Trudeau could learn so much from Sen Robert Kennedy about spending money that isn’t his to spend… If eastern Canada would respect the wealth we have in the country, in the ground, we would not be in this position. Canada could be one of the wealthiest countries in the world and Canadians could have a very high standard of living. Canada spends only 27 billion dollars per year on their military budget because America spends 900 billion dollars on their military budget.. I voted for Trump, but it's hard not to agree with Trudeau on this even though I find this guy to be extremely unpleasant. There's no reason to start trade wars all over the world and in particular with our neighbors. It's one thing to threaten tariffs and a very different thing to actually apply them. If you do it has to be accompanied by a lot of diplomacy so that the other country is not overreacting, but Trump has been super combative prompting our neighbors to respond in kind to save face. While past deals may not have been great for US, this is not the way to handle our differences. Billionaires like Trump and his friends will be fine, but the majority of ordinary folks in the US and Canada will suffer. Very dumb, indeed.

Oh, the solution is pretty simple, as is the reverse of tariffs. Most of Canadians savings are poured directly or through investment funds into Wall Street to increase US investment. The main export of US is bonds and stocks. Let the Canadian government introduce a tax on any investment on its residents on any asset in US currency or us denominated. Immediately billions and billions of dollars ( CAD ) would return into the country. Too bad for US treasury bonds and stocks.
