Remember when this same fellow froze protesters bank accounts and began collecting peoples weapons? Yet, he has the gull to talk about dictators. Trump actually wants to avoid WWIII and I hope what his administration does will bring an end to the war. Though, I do agree he should be more tough on Putin. That being said, I do agree that the crossings from Canada are not nearly as significant as compared to our southern border. It would be nice to see more from Canada in their investments to secure the border and stop crossings, cartel movements, and drug operations. The US has spent more than 409 billion since 2003 on such operations. Regardless, I feel for you Canadians and it sucks that it has come to this and I hope we keep strong relations in the future. Hopefully we can come to a fair deal soon. Mexico and China are the big players that do not do nearly enough to prevent these crimes. In fact, the Mexican government helps the cartels by not trying to stop them. China's lack of regulation on the ingredients to make fentanyl contribute to a large extent to this tragedy as well.

We are all living in strange times! The bad guy (Putin) is defended like he’s the good guy and the victim (Zelensky) is criticized like he’s the aggressor. This is so weird and negative like an episode of the Twighlight Zone! I think I can understand how Trump is viewing things. Bill O’Reilly seems to know how Trump thinks. Nevertheless, things are upside down! USA voting at the UN with North Korea and Putin and Belarus and against the EU and UK and NATO alliance nations … against the victim Ukraine? This is unheard of! Yet this is so ironic because Leonid Brezhnev, who was the USSR leader, when Russia invaded the sovereign nation of Afghanistan, and Vladimir Putin was a young KGB agent at that time, working for Brezhnev, is now in his position as leader, and he invaded Brezhnev’s sovereign homeland of Ukraine. Brezhnev must be weeping from hell and regretting his invasion of Afghanistan! Crying from hell, seeing his servant, Putin, in his seat of authority, and invading his homeland like he did to Afghanistan, I’m sure Brezhnev regrets but it’s too late now. He’s burning in hell and he can’t get out of hell! \n\nThe bad deal that Clinton and Yeltson and John Major dealt to Ukraine in the 1990s when they moved all of her nuclear weapons to Russia was like declawing the Ukrainian cat and now the cat can’t defend herself against aggressors because she has no claws to defend herself from aggressive attackers!\n\nCanada and Mexico are our friends not our enemies! China and North Korea still idolize the USSR/CCCP flag and Soviet Union hammer and sickle. Putin is a thug and gangster like Joseph Stalin. Everyone forgot what happened to Alexander Litvinenko except for those like John Bolton. \n\nWe are all living in perilous times! The wrongdoer (Putin) is called good and the victim (Zelensky) is called bad! This is so negatively bizarre and wrong! Isaiah 5:20 warns against this! Putin is not pure evil but he’s definitely not a good guy! He’s a gangster and thug like Al Capone! I think President Trump is walking on a tight rope by trying to make a good deal with Putin. And that tight rope spans from one high rise building to another - the senate and house chambers of the US legislature. The midterms are coming soon and if President Trump loses the house and senate, that tight rope could snap! And all those shock and awe executive orders etc. could come back to haunt him like a boomerang thumping his head.\n\nNever in my wildest imagination would I ever imagine Canadians harboring bad feelings towards the USA! This is 180 degrees opposite of how things were when Ronald Reagan and Brian Mulroney were in the political arena!

From Canada: Sorry but we did this to ourselves by not growing our economy as we could have done, by not expanding energy and trade, by being led by a non-leader who panders only to the east and disrespects the west, who spends money like it’s on fire. Trudeau could learn so much from Sen Robert Kennedy about spending money that isn’t his to spend… If eastern Canada would respect the wealth we have in the country, in the ground, we would not be in this position. Canada could be one of the wealthiest countries in the world and Canadians could have a very high standard of living. Instead we are stagnant and woke, dying from terrible drug policies and woke law, and bursting with a terrible “look at me, look at how good I am” immigration policy. We have no investment or tourism in BC, no foreign buyers, almost no airbnb, no fruit, soon to be no wine, but at least we have free drugs and 2000 genders, right Provincial NPD? That will help the bank account. And we have no respect for Alberta’s riches that benefit EVERYONE. All the power is centralized in Quebec, with the Bloc not even a federal GD party but somehow allowed to be a federal party, and Ontario and Atlantic Canada just loving a false sense of moral and intellectual superiority, and don’t forget transfer payments. And we have got ourselves into this Liberal government purgatory (thank God the Federal NPD have been decimated over it…at least there is some justice), so that we write cheques to make us feel good and look good despite that we can’t afford it. And we prevent growth and trade to make ourselves feel good and look good even though we can’t afford it. And here we are now, broke a** with no prospects and no savings. Well done Canada and well done Capitano Trudeau.

Under normal circumstances I would be the last person to support our Liberal party; especially Trudeau. His past record speaks for itself. However, his talk today to the American people and Trump actually made me feel proud to be a Canadian. It was the harshest language I have heard him use towards Trump especially after enduring weeks of degrading talk from Trump in relation to calling Trudeau a governor. I hope that the Liberals follow through with protecting Canadians.

The only reason Trump set tariffs on Canada is because he would look like a racist if he only did it to Mexico. I have a feeling soon Trump will lift the tariffs on Canada citing that Canada has complied with his requests. He will keep the tariffs on Mexico though.

I'm not sure what the President is thinking. I'm not sure why he approach these situations in this manner. Maybe I'm missing something. I like to give the benefit of doubt to everything because i know that I'm not all-knowing. With that being said, on his part, I would like some clarity. I'm feeling quite uneasy with the way he is handling things.

As a republican politician, I would feel deeply ashamed to serve a dimwit like DJT.

Trump derangement syndrome blinds you from seeing the dis respect zylynski showed. He triggered Trump when he said that we were going to feel war on our soil although we are shielded by an ocean. He never wanted to do a cease fire. Aka stop the killing now. Today. Than negotiate the securities. Which Trump said would be easier to do. Stop the war. And the part where we are not getting our money back where with the other nations it is a loan. That is probably the underlying reason why the hesitation by zylynski. \nAs far as tradeau. He reminds way to much of newsom…

@robertedward7023 \n\nServing the country doesn’t mean that you’re right. President Trump was not bullying Zelensky but Zelensky was disrespectful to our President. “You have nice oceans so you don’t feel it now but in the future you will feel it “ is what Zelenskyy stated. How can you speak against your President who has done nothing but look out for Americans to defend someone who would be so disrespectful to our country. Zelensky also stated that Americans will bleed for his country. Why would anyone defend this blatant hatred. President Trump has tried to give Zelensky what he needs not what he wants. All of these countries gather together to rally against POTUS because he won’t allow them to financially enslave Americans and use America as a personal piggy bank. Every single American who loves this country should have President Trumps back.

This is so heart breaking, I was actually hopeful that Trump would change things for the better but it feels like we’re in a downward spiral, pray for the US ??❤️

That P.C. should’ve resigned\nNobody would have a problem, tariffs just because of him (Trudeau) is the dictator!!!\nLook what he done to his people during the Covid and he want to lecture us Americans. I can live with 25% tariffs.\nI feel bad for Canadians, not their government. There is no democracy.
2025-03-04 0
Im so proud to be Canadian. I will take as much hardship to protect our beautiful Canada. Im buying only Canadian products and from countries that stand with democratic principles. My heart goes out to the American people. No citizen would have knowingly voted for the dismantling of their country and the suffering all will feel. Put your political view aside and pull together to save your families and country.

At what point does the International Olympic Committee and other international sports bodies step in and ban the USA from the upcoming Olympics? \nTrump has made his position clear that he feels Russia is not at fault for anything that has happened in Ukraine. The debacle that went on in the Oval office on February 28th was not only disgusting, but it proved to me that the president is not willing to be a peaceful friend to anyone on a personal or global level. Today's tariffs only cements that proof. The framework is in place to make a strong case to ban USA from the Olympics and current future international sports events. I realize this would impact many good people, but a country hell bent on hating those fighting so hard for their freedom has no place on any playing field right now.

I'm so shocked, I don't know how to express my feelings. Have you ever imagined the one person would destroy all his working relationships during ONE MONTH! That is so despicable, I cannot wrap my mind around it. Please, can anyone explain what's unfolding before our eyes???

Little Trump is not a president nor is he a businessman. He’s a scared little rat a draft dodger and think America if he was afraid to fight in the war then what makes us think that he would protect us now he’s a scared rat. He’s afraid of his own shadow. The family kids and the grandchildren are the ones that are going to feel the damage he will do to this country in four years. I feel so sorry for our men and women in the military now and our veterans are taking a pounding very sad . He’s only doing it to benefit for his own greed. Very sad human being. He’s miserable he’s depressed. You can see it in his face. He was a piece of shit to the American people before he ever even thought of being a president he owes contractors millions of dollars through his life no wonder he has a bull’s-eye on his back and they say he can’t sleep at night well, I wonder why he fucked the American people and he will keep fucking American people nobody will stop him He will keep fucking us until he’s done. And after all that damage that he will do to this country, in the four years it will be so damaged. It will never heal.

Donald Trump claims to be a Christian but what he is doing to other countries and his own country by firing people from government jobs is totally against God God gives life he don't take it and he would never have sent people to the streets just because some politicians created a job for the people this is going to cause people to lose their homes vehicles and their livelihood it is totally evil. And then placing these tariffs on other countries is no less than say I want your country he wants Canada he wants Panama, he wants Ukraine's lithium. And he wants to take it all and he is wrong in that because he is affecting people's lives and God Almighty will not put up with Donald Trump giving into the spoiled brat Elon Musk and his dictatorship attitude. Both Elan and Trump have no heart for the poor or the hardship they have placed on these people but God Almighty has a heart for the people who have lost their jobs and their livelihood because of Donald Trump and Elon Musk. In the book of Isaiah God said to the people that were coming against Israel, you have pissed on a wall. And everybody knows that when you piss on a wall it's going to come back on you and that's exactly what's happened. They didn't do it to the people that lost their jobs they did it to God Almighty who loves all people and wants them to have their wages. Maybe Elon Musk knows everything about technology and space craft, but the man ain't got a lick a common sense he has exactly zero wisdom when making decisions. But his greatest lack as he has no heart for the people who are going to be disrupted by losing their jobs he doesn't feel a thing he has no heart he needs to read the Bible because that's where your heart gets developed and you know right from wrong. And you know what God approves of and what he doesn't, and I'm telling you right now God Almighty does not approve of what Donald Trump and Elon Musk are doing. I voted for him, and now I am ashamed that I voted for him because he never mentioned he was going to do all this horrible horror to the very American people that voted for him. Now I pray for God's divine intervention because what he's doing to the American people and to other countries is not right

Trudeau needs to do better to keep the fentanyl from coming to America.. I don’t feel sorry for Canada one bit. I lost my daughter to fentanyl so I myself would like some retribution… so him up there preaching like he’s holier than thou is laughable… more fentanyl is coming over the Canadian border than the actual southern border… and that’s after they already had this agreement to stop the fentanyl flow..

We now have a criminal administration in the US if that were not enough the leader is also crazy. Americans are only just starting to feel the pain his policies will bring to us and now even more to Canadians whose economy is in a more fragile state than ours. The silver lining is American people will stand with the people of other countries including Canadians to take back their power from a would be dictator who cares not about people but only the bottom line. Appologies to all Canadians from the people of the USA !

As a western Canadian- hows it feel Justin- thats how you have treated us for 9 years. Bend over Ontario and Quebec, I kinda think it looks good on you. If we had our parliament in this probably would have been avoided, but thanks to the Liberals our Premiers have had to do the work.

Trump is a criminal and the world's biggest traitor on record. He is not the brains behind it though. It is the rich right wingers like Musk and Putin. The US dies not get shared intelligence anymore because Trump is probably passing info to Putin. He is just a kao dog who would prefer to play golf and get told what to do. Stand firm Canada. The EU is with you and will help in any way it can. I feel the majority of the US is also on your side, and I do not see Trump finishing his term in Washington. I think the people are protesting a lot now, and it is rising!

Thank god my state won out blue, even if just barely. I would feel so embarrassed living in a red state. Wait nevermind I still am ashamed to be an American for the first time in my entire life, even though I didn't vote for him. Glory to Canada and Slava Ukraini, can't believe I have to remind people of this

Honestly, the way of saying that one people is more productive then the other is such an extreme oversimplification. I know this is a general term used by economists, but I can’t see the benefit. It is divisive and I feel like it would be more beneficial and interesting to just dive into each countries finacial strategy. \n\nP.S. Love the content, english is not my first language and no personal stake in the argument since according to the simplification I am apart of one of the most productive populations of the planet.(Norway)

As a Canadian, I am more afraid of the people than their healthcare system. And I am chronically ill and would be homeless in America. You seem pretty cool, but living in a place where children have to train for school shootings. I heard they cant even wear light up shoes for their own saftey. Just their hate of immigrants and people in general. Its not the first time that I have heard an American say they want to shoot down all the aliens. Also, wtf! We know you live in America. You dont need to have a flag every 2 meters. ????? even on your clothes. We get it! You're American! I feel like you guys get super offended by everything.

I feel like the policy makers and economists advising governments like pwc are responsible for this and knew this would happen and sought to profit in the boom.

The liberals in our country keep saying how terrible our country is. If that, then why do so many people from other countries feel so desperate to live here?\n\nAlso, who made them feel so entitled to come here illegally that they would rush our border patrol?

Most illegal migrants spend thousands of dollars to commit the crime (entering any sovereign country illegally is simply an invasion). If they dare to enter China or any of the Arab countries this way, then who knows, they would be in heaven or hell rather than back home. All the deportees should be arrested on reaching back home for invading a foreign sovereign country and tarnishing the images of hundreds of millions of citizens of their countries who enter the USA or any other developed democratic country to study at the best of the universities, and after completion of the courses, they are not only provided the best of the jobs but also citizenship or other legal status to stay put in the countries. But these people reach their desired destination after going through rigorous educational and other processes and after a thorough background check. But in the matter of illegal immigrants, how are the victimized countries supposed to know their backgrounds? How can one be sure if they are not hardcore criminals, terrorists, spies, or even trained soldiers of enemy countries? In such uncertainty, how can the invaded countries be sure that an incident or incidents of such a large magnitude might not take place that, in comparison, the incident of 9/11 would look like the small incident of bursting firecrackers? But on one election promise, the president is, unfortunately, taking a complete U-turn that those students who do the master's and other higher studies should be retained and provided legal status to stay in the country as their contributions are needed to give the country the perpetual cutting edge in the highly competitive world and keep the country's status as number one. These scholars are feeling cheated that by spending huge amounts of money and contributing to the research and development during the studies, they have not only been taken for a ride but also become the main target of the deportation campaign as their status is available with the government. On the other hand, millions of undocumented workers are comparatively safe, as tracing and deporting them is not an easily achievable task. Besides, millions of foreign citizens are given entry into the country on flimsy grounds, and many of them do not even ever go to elementary school. I think even God would not be able to make out what the fuck this country has become on this issue. Almost the same is the situation with most of the EU countries, the UK, Australia, and Canada.

Do not feel sorry for Canada. I am Canadian. Canadians voted for the Liberal Socialist Government they have 3 times. The youth wanted marijuana legalized. The union governments wanted to tax the corporation to be the highest of the G-7, tax their citizens, attack investors, to fund their rediculous social programs, paid sick days, stat holidays, benefits, pension plans etc .....and now no one in their right mind would open a business or invest in Canada..... No, Canadians are getting what they voted for and deserve....Good Luck to them, I have found a new and friendly country to do business and invest in. Oh, and it has beautiful weather all year round. You could not pay me enough to invest in Canada again:)

If these migrants have money to fly to canada. Then they have the money to fly into any american airport and try to migrant legally. The fact they don't is highly likely because they would never qualify for asylum status as their country isn't in war ect. So these people aren't asylum seekers, they are just people who want to migrant but don't want to have to pay the money to do so or do it legally. Don't feel bad for them.

Adams stance is this: He wishes for the law to be enforced, because he knows the damage it has caused to the city of NY, which he was elected represent, and the citizens whom he has the charge and duty of safety and maintenance. But he's been ham-strung because of the leftarded Governor, Hochul. He wants to follow the desire of his constituency, but cannot because the Sanctuary City Status is out of his control, because of Hochul. Tom Homan stance is this: If that's truly the crux of the situation, then you will do everything within your power to assist the Federal Government Law Enforcement Efforts. To hinder any effort would be seen as a criminal act, and he would be the first to feel the axe. Hochul is next. So, yeah...whether he's cooperating because he truly wants Law and Order, or to save his own arse. I care not, either way, so long as the job is done.

I don't understand why any of the citizens of NYC would vote for this governer. Wake up people and remove her from office. Get ride of all those city coucils workers who want to make profit off of your lack of safety. What they are doing is pure evil. Even over here in upstate NY I feel unsafe going to the farmers market. I see a lot of foreign people getting aid to buy there. I don't know who they are or if they are good people. They could be dangerous criminals. Our past President just let everyone in. Pure evil! I want to see this governors funding removed and maybe some jail time. For sure loss of position.

Furthermore, I would not feel secure if you were piloting a plane I was on. If I saw you, I would exit & take another flight. And that’s not bigotry on my part. It’s self preservation! If a person genuinely “believed” they were Jesus Christ and wanted to fly, I would have the same reaction. You are mentally disillusioned.

If anyone knew how bad and unsafe life is in Juarez Mexico you wouldn't blame people from trying to run out of there. With the drug violence it's normal to just see dead bodies hanging from the side of a freeway together or laying on the streets. It's normal for young women to be kidnapped and killed. Normal for even the reporters reporting on the cartels to be killed. Many people don't even feel safe leaving their homes. Given half a chance I would try to run in there too but I understand the concern that we just can't let so many people in our country. I see both sides.

My family and I waited for 12 years to enter US legally. Why would I feel sorry for this people?
2025-02-08 0
WHY is everyone SHOCKED that they are shackled? They came into the US illegally which means that they BROKE THE LAW, which in turn means, they are CRIMINALS! Imagine being the pilot of that plane? Would you feel safe flying that plane, knowing that behind you, there are angry, unshackled, illegal criminals ready to maybe storm the cockpit, in the hopes to turn back the plane to the US? lol.

Democrats and the left have actually lost their minds. This is a very interesting study in human behavior lately.\nStockholm syndrome? They are going right back to the media who told them Biden was sharp and on point, Kamala was going to win, the economy was great and inflation was just 2%, and your $29,000 average student loan debt (some much higher) would land you a good job. I feel bad for these young people. Just do a search for Can’t find a job and laid off on Y T. This started early last year. These might be those youth voters who went for Trump.

The mental gymnastic is quite impressive. Imagine my shock when crime is treated with enforcement. It would be one thing if Americans could reciprocate invading other countries, however, unfortunately that is not allowed. I do feel bad for illegal immigrants because they got away with breaking the law for so long and now the law is being enforced at once.

Me, me, me---what about your unit?? In Vietnam, I had to swim away from my broken Huey, in four feet of muddy water mixed with JP4 jet fuel. The little crack on the end of my penis felt like it was on fire. I can't imagine how a trans would feel with a brand new vagina!!\nIt's crude, but that's the way it was. I'm glad we did not have thee problems in the 60s!!

The only people who are here illegally should feel uneasy. You’re breaking the law by crossing ILLEGALLY into the US. This would be no different if I was to cross into another country illegally. They would have the right to remove me from their country and face legal charges for breaking their laws. Unfortunately illegal immigrants were getting away with it under the Biden administration which has caused chaos in the US. Now Trump is having to clean up the mess it’s caused and hold people accountable for breaking the law. I have friends and a wife that all went through the legal process to become a US citizen. It’s not fair to the people who are going through the legal process by letting them get away with it and giving them VIP treatment for breaking the law. This is absurd!
2025-02-05 0
These people cheat the system. How, do you ask why? They come over here illegally, but don't care about the law. They feel entitled to our money they have never had to work for or contribute to. Their girlfriends and wives have anchor babies. While receiving food stamps (EBT), cash money assistance, free government housing, free healthcare, social security, steal our jobs by under cutting you (cheaper pay), go to school free, free college, perpetuate racism ( if your smart you would know what i mean ?), refusing to learn English while some jobs you can't get if you dont speak Spanish, standoffish (they keep mostly to themselves

I feel terrible for these people but i just wish they would stay home and put this much effort into FIXING their own countries rather than abandoning their home whem it goes to shit. \n\nThese kinds of number have power but they're all brainwashed into thinking they have no power against the corruption at home.

I would feel bad for them, maybe back in 2013, when I remember things were ok for me and many others in the US. Now it's been such a downfall for many of us that we can't even feel bad for them. I mean we have thousands and thousands of homeless people, and they wanna come in thinking they'll get help. Like... Na

Trump says EU tariffs will ‘definitely happen’ as Mexico, Canada and China retaliate \nTrump takes softer line on UK, saying ‘I think that one can be worked out’, while Mexico and Canada vow levies and to strengthen ties with each other \n \nPhilip Wen, Léonie Chao-Fong and agencies \nMon 3 Feb 2025 03.57 GMT \nShare \nDonald Trump has threatened to widen the scope of his trade tariffs, repeating his warning that the European Union – and potentially the UK – will face levies, even as he conceded that Americans could bear some of the economic brunt of a nascent global trade war. \n \nIt comes as Trump’s tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China, announced on Saturday, sparked retaliation from all three countries. Mexico and Canada have vowed levies of their own while China and Canada are seeking legal challenges. \n \nTrump said on Sunday night that new tariffs on the EU will “definitely happen”, repeating previous complaints about the large US trade deficit with the bloc and his desire for Europe to import more American cars and agricultural products. \n \nEmpty shelves remain with signs ''Buy Canadian Instead'' after the top five US liquor brands were removed from sale at a British Columbia liquor store in Vancouver. \nAsian sharemarkets tumble in response to Trump tariffs \nRead more \n“It will definitely happen with the European Union, I can tell you that,” he told reporters. “I wouldn’t say there’s a timeline but it’s going to be pretty soon.” \n \nTrump appeared to take a softer line on the UK, citing a good relationship with prime minister Keir Starmer while saying tariffs still “might happen”. “The UK is out of line but I’m sure that one, I think that one can be worked out,” he said. \n \n“Well Prime Minister Starmer’s been very nice, we’ve had a couple of meetings, we’ve had numerous phone calls, we’re getting along very well, we’ll see whether or not we can balance out our budget.” \n \nIn Canada, the department of finance published a list of US products imported into Canada that it will target with a 25% retaliatory tariff starting on Tuesday. \n \nThe list shows products that will be hit in the first round of retaliatory tariffs by Canada starting on Tuesday, and mounts to $30bn Canadian dollars’ worth of goods (about US$20bn). The impacted products include tobacco, produce, household appliances, firearms and military gear. \n \nCanada is also preparing for a second, broader round of retaliatory tariffs in 21 days that will target an additional C$125bn (US$86bn) worth of US imports. The second list would include passenger vehicles, trucks, steel and aluminum products, certain fruits and vegetables, beef, pork, dairy products and more. \n \nFILES-US-CANADA-MEXICO-CHINA-TRADE-TARIFFS<br>(FILES) US President Donald Trump speaks to the press after signing an executive order in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, DC on January 31, 2025. Trump is imposing steep tariffs on major US trading partners Canada, Mexico and China, with a lower rate on Canadian energy imports, said the White House on February 1, 2025. Washington will impose a 25 percent levy on imports from Canada and Mexico, with a 10 percent rate on Canadian energy resources, until both work with the United States on drug trafficking and immigration. Sheinbaum, in a statement on Sunday, said she will announce details on her government’s “plan B” as she insisted that Mexico “doesn’t want confrontation”. \n \n“Problems are not addressed by imposing tariffs, but with talks and dialogue,” she said. “Sovereignty is not negotiable: coordination yes, subordination no.” \n \n'Coordination yes, subordination no': Mexican president responds to Trump's tariffs – video \nSheinbaum and Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau spoke by phone on Saturday after Trump’s administration imposed the new tariffs – 25% on goods from Canada and Mexico, with a lower rate of 10% for Canadian oil, and 10% on imports from China. \n \nTrudeau’s office said in a statement that Canada and Mexico agreed “to enhance the strong bilateral relations” between their countries. Canadian officials have had extensive dialogue with their Mexican counterparts, but a senior Canadian official said he would not go as far as to say the tariff responses were coordinated. \n \n“Now is the time to choose products made right here in Canada,” Trudeau posted Sunday on X. “Check the labels. Let’s do our part. Wherever we can, choose Canada.” \n \nTrump acknowledged the sweeping tariffs he has imposed on Mexico, Canada and China may cause “short term” pain for Americans as global markets reflected concerns the levies could undermine growth and reignite inflation. Asian markets, cryptocurrencies and US and European stock futures slumped in early Asian trading on Monday. \n \n“We may have short term some little pain, and people understand that. But long term, the United States has been ripped off by virtually every country in the world,” he said. day, Trudeau said: “We’re certainly not looking to escalate, but we will stand up for Canada.” However on Sunday evening, a senior government official from Canada briefing reporters in Ottowa on condition of anonymity said: “We will obviously pursue the legal recourse that we believe we have through the agreements that we share with the United States.” \n \nThe official said the Canadian government considered the move by Trump illegal and said it violates the trade commitments between the two countries under their free trade agreement and under the World Trade Organization. \n \n“If other legal avenues are available to us, they will be considered as well,” the official said. \n \nCanada is the largest export market for 36 states, and Mexico is the largest trading partner of the US. \n \nCanada and Mexico ordered the tariffs despite Trump’s further threat to increase the duties charged if retaliatory levies are placed on US goods. \n \nChina also said it would file a lawsuit against the tariffs. The imposition of tariffs by the US “seriously violates” World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, China’s commerce ministry said in a statement, urging the US to “engage in frank dialogue and strengthen cooperation”. \n \nFiling a lawsuit with the WTO would be a largely symbolic move that Beijing has also taken against tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles by the EU. \n \nThe commerce ministry also said the tariffs were “not only unhelpful in solving the US’s own problems, but also undermine normal economic and trade cooperation”. China has said it would take countermeasures to “safeguard its own rights and interests”. It is not clear exactly what form these will take yet. But for weeks Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has said Beijing believes there is no winner in a trade war. \n \nLate Sunday night, Trump said he would speak with Trudeau on Monday morning and shortly after said he would speak with Mexico as well, although he did not specify that he would speak with Sheinbaum. \n \nBeyond the official response, people were already thinking of ways to cope with Trump’s decision, including by sharing suggestions on social media for alternatives to US products. \n \nCanadian hockey fans booed the US national anthem on Saturday night at two National Hockey League games. Joseph Chua, who works as an importer, said he expects to feel the tariffs “pretty directly”. “I’ve always stood during both anthems. I’ve taken my hat off to show respect to the American national anthem, but today we’re feeling a little bitter about things,” he said, adding that he will start to avoid buying US products. \n \nIn the streets, people in Mexico were trying to absorb the announcement on Sunday, although some in the capital acknowledged that they were unaware of the measures. \n \nIn the border city of Mexicali, across from Calexico, California, some people were concerned about the wider implications of a trade war. \n \nDriver Alejandro Acosta says that he crosses the border weekly in his truck to deliver vegetables to US companies. He said he fears US businesses in the Mexicali Valley will no longer want to operate in Mexico and they will move to the US. \n \n“If they raise taxes on the factories here, jobs may also decrease,” he said.
