Is it possible that this is all about access to critical minerals - which Canada and Ukraine hav in abundance. America has form in creating a pretence to go to war to protect access to cheap oil. But in the past these wars were against arab nations and so the West found it easy to 'other' and accept the need for war. Now America under Trump is hoping to secure critical minerals (modern day oil) - but because they are allies he cant start an outright war. So hes doing it through trade. This is old form for America. When looked through this lense is not so difficult to understand. The big question is will the west allow him to bully western allies - democracies to be bullied into submission?

Remind me again why Trudeau was forced to resign? Even NY Times investigative journalists recently explained how NAFTA worked against US interests and killed so much of our industry decades ago; almost the opposite of what was intended. Trade needs to be reformed across the board. It's also insulting the way other world leaders are now speaking directly to the American Public and lying to them as if they have our best interest in mind. World leaders are elected to defend the interests of their own people, many times they just look out for their own personal interest, but they are definitely not looking out for American interest. It is up to us. The world stage is a complicated transaction of this for that. That's life. Have you all forgot playing United Nations in high school? Trade needs to be renegotiated from significantly benefiting every other country but USA. Trump is trying to do that.

I am a Canadian and I love America and the American people. I hope we can put this behind us sooner rather than later there is no need for any tension between us. We always have each other‘s back. With that said, I would like to see Canada step up to certain obligations, including with NATO, but as far as a trade work goes, this is not good.

Right so after years of inflation, a pandemic, ongoing wars etc. Trump decided he had to make everything worse by starting a trade war and aligning himself with a murderous dictator...what a great choice for president the world totally needed right now ?

I think one scenario we need to consider, is that trump is going to whine about no one wanting to do business with him as everyone will retaliate after tariffs (trade war indeed), and that he'll then turn to russia for trading. It sounds insane, but this is trump, making the insane possible.

Why is it so difficult for the Canadian government to stop cooperating with the CCP and end all transaction and trade of fentanyl? Why does the Canadian people need to pay the price for the greed and stupidity of this irresponsible government? Which politician is benefiting from the fentanyl deal? When Canadian politicians are in bed long enough with the CCP, they will work for this communist regime and not for the Canadian people. Trump is certainly looking out for the American people, who is Trudeau looking out for?

What would be good is to also explain factually to what Trump says the negative trade amount is to what it actually is. Need the facts shown.

The comments in support of us are great - and I would hope that the verbal support will translate into active measures such as trade preferences, trade deals, military agreements and all the other things we will need as allies with dangerous bedfellows in this strange new world order.

Canada just needs to fix the trade deficit with the United States. If Trudeau does, the U.S. tariffs would not happen. Canada has turned a deaf ear when the U.S. requested a fair trading partner and less deficits in the past decades. Trump was obligated to put a tariff on Canadian goods entering the U.S. since Canada did not resolve the problem.

I think finally Canada realized that if they have friend like US then they don't need any enemy. You can't trust US at all and need to start open your market for global trade. I am glad that finally this happened cause sometimes you need a slap on face to wake up from a cozy bogus dream. Yes it will be painful few years for Canada but when time will come for fresh water and Arctic resources, it will be payback time to US. Forget US and start shipping products to Europe, China and India. Make pacts and create meaningful relationships and let US do whatever they feel like doing because ultimately Canada is the 2nd biggest landmass in the world, 3rd biggest supply of oil, 5th biggest supply of natural gas, 1st in the world for supply of potash and uranium, If you include Great lakes then it has 4 coasts that can tie them with water so great opportunity to create best ports, 1st in natural source of water and 5th biggest agricultral landmass. Then why bother and put your energy into someone who don't care. Let US do whatever they like and forget about them. Just don't go to US and don't deal with US.

I am an American and love my country and its people. But TRUMP and Musk and Vance are villains ?! They must be defeated. And they will be stopped. Canada (and many other countries) spent decades supporting the maintenance of US hegemony. Look what it got us? To a position where we're pretty much greatly dependent on, and at the mercy of the US. We need to invest more in our own country and make our own products. We should also trade with other countries regardless of what the US thinks of those countries. Trump wants Canada to put tariffs on China in the attempt to further impede that country's economic growth so the US will remain the economic hegemony. Never mind that a trade war with China would put Canada in an even worse position. Given the current events, I say we trade with China even more!

Picking a trade war with Canada, Mexico, China and major economics is a very bad idea. It will not bring anybody to the negotiation table to get a better deal. It will drive them away from US partnership and they form alliances, new trade routes and partnerships, de-dollarization, etc. Just think why does a country needs USD when they cannot trade with US. BRICS have overtaken G7 in the overall GDP. So, In the end, US will be left alone with limited trading partners. US people will need to pay for tax + tariffs which will put them in a downward spiral.

It makes sense that you don't want this as you have been ripping us off for many years. All we want is free trade. What we have gotten is lopsided trade. FAFO. The USA has a strong leader now. We have plenty of options to fulfill our needs. A little bit of extra cost is worth it to bring our industry and jobs back here and rebalance our trade agreements. The country that receives products has to pay the tarriffs, so that just means we will have to pay more too. So STOP exporting/importing to/from the US. Period. Trade with countries that NEED OUR PRODUCTS. What Trump seems to try to get at most is the unfair act of the USMCA. Most trades benefited Canada, while Canada refused to provide the same fair trades. Sometimes Trump does say things that may have gone off track like fentyl handling on Canada's end and border handling. It seems like our borders at the time were less strict on the American side versus the Canadian side of the border. Trump did state multiple times that most countries like Canada were unfair to USA. Even with the USMCA, America got screwed by Mexico as will. America has been there helping and supporting and submitting to every country. Yet failed to support our own people when we need it, especially to clear up our own debts. Sadly, America is falling behind due to poor handling of Government Democrat corruption. I am neutral as both parties don't always provide the best solution for everyone. You have to pick who can help the American people. Seeing how corrupt the Democrats has ran America and the defacto behind of all the wars and money laundering has surprised me, and I hope the change with Trump will help everyone realize how screwed we all are in correcting those corruption that isn't really needed.

Trump led the charge to get rid of TikTok and then he left Office and it happened but he’s the one who started it all 7000 people lost their job jobs. Ah yes, the trade war that Canada will surely lose. I love Canada. Wouldn't trade it for the world, but this is a losing battle by which citizens on both sides will feel the full effect. Trump appeasing Putin is a chess move, that the PM seems to be overlooking. The US can't afford to go to war with Russia, but at the same time, it needs resources within Russia's neighboring region. So the US will do what they always do, and had people listened to what Kissinger had to say, they'd be better prepared for this. Nonetheless, let's stand proud and strong, and come together as Canadians in order to get through this.

It's truly unfortunate that this is all caused by 1 person, who no longer has a system of checks and balances on him. I feel our relationship with the U.S has come to an end. We need to have closer ties with our friends in Europe, and secure more trade deals with the EU and Great Britain.
