Trump is attempting to offset his tax cuts by implementing a tax that isn't called a tax. All of the money from the tariffs goes to the government. Trump has mentioned when tariffs were common as supporting what he is doing, but he doesn't add that at that time, there wasn't an income tax, so tariffs were how the government supported itself. Trump, knowing that tariffs are income for the government, is lying to his base so they will accept the increased prices as a necessary evil to battle the bad countries of Mexico and Canada. It will look like his tax breaks aren't hurting as much as they are and price increases will be the fault of the other countries.\n\nTrump is a conniving grifter with no knowledge of how to run a country's economy or international trade. He is gaslighting the American public to cover his own shortcomings.\n\nAlso, if fentanyl is entering the US, why is it the fault of the other countries? It is the job of the US to stop anything on its side of the border. Canada and Mexico do what they can to catch the drugs while inside their respective countries. The tons of cocaine and guns that enter Canada and Mexico from the US are caught by their border services; they don't blame the US for the products getting past their own border agents, and the US takes no responsibility for it making it across the border. Why is it other countries' fault for drugs getting past the US's border agents, but not the fault of the US that guns and drugs are going in the other direction? That is why countries work together, not fight over whose fault it is and try to punish each other.

A message to Trudeau. Put an export tax on the Oil and Electricity sold to the United States. Open up new European Markets for Oil and Natural Gas product and sell directly to Europe and Japanese markets. China needs oil, there is plenty of market around the world for our products. The Tariff's imposed by Trump is only going to make product to the US more expensive for their own citizens, and with Tariff's on all American imports, if they can't make it, or they don't have the raw materials to make it themselves, they will have to pay more. It is not necessary to impose Tariff's on USA Products to penalize Canadians, but Canadians will find new markets to replace the US, and we won't even notice it happened. We have alternatives. The southern islands are great vacation locations, and with the weather disasters they have suffered over the past few years, they could use the tourist support to help rebuild, and, their people are friendly and don't carry guns.

Somewhat right but not exactly right. According to Trump admin, Trump is actually trying to stop the circumvention of Chinese goods and Chinese drugs coming from Canada. Trudeau promised Trump to work on the drug issue, but I guess he did not if we are seeing the significant import tax on Canada now. I live in Nashville, TN USA. I am so sorry Canada is suffering due to Trump. I do not support this move on Trump's part. I never voted for him. That is the Trade deficit the United States carried with Canada last year, almost a trillion dollars of lost production; lost profit and lost jobs and lost income for working class Americans. In addition to this Trade Deficit, U.S. exporters face possible 5 to 10 percent taxes in the form of sales taxes from some provinces and the federal government. Mr. Trump is trying to level the playing field which will even this deficit. This is fair for both parties. If anyone is wondering about the reason of Trump's tariffs: Tariff is source of revenue for the government which is not based on salary. The rich and the poor of the USA will pay the same amount of it for a specific product. This revenue will then serve the US government to decrease the income tax, which is based on percent of revenue (i.e higher income people pay much more taxes). The tax cuts means those with higher revenue will get to keep more of it. So at the end of the day more of the governments revenue will come from those with lower revenue. Thus unfortunately widening the gap between the rich and the poor.

as a Canadian, i would like to thank Donald and Elon for their plans to implement the most innovative degrowth agenda imaginable. why dance around the edges like Canada has with its consumer carbon tax that rebated more money to most citizens than they spent on carbon taxes ? no, the DOGE solution to addressing climate change is much better .. just cripple the three north american economies with tariffs, put hundreds of thousands of citizens out of work, and make the Trump tax cuts permanent so that the federal government is broke as well. no more money means no more spending or consuming .. it's a win for the entire planet !!
