Consider this: You can get a whole bachelor's degree for the price of a single year in an American university. It's why there's a surprising number of American profs in Canadian schools. I'll never forget the American professor of political philosophy who argued that taxation and social programs were bad because they disincentivized charity. What a laugh!

Fundamental problem - foreign students are massively valuable to universities, and school ratings are massively reliant on foreign student attendance. Once a foreign student gets their degree, the uni has already profited.

Many, many Canadian DOCTORS move to the USA. They scoop up their taxpayer-subsidized, cheap medical degree here in Canada. Then, because they know how overworked doctors are here in Canada, they move to the USA for HIGHER income, LOWER taxes and they never, ever have to pay Canadian taxpayers back for what we gave them -- their affordable medical degree. Lawyers don't usually move to the USA because their legal knowledge is too specific to Canada and doesn't transfer as well as medical knowledge does. Americans die because they aren't medically covered. Canadians die WAITING for healthcare. We wonder why our healthcare system isn't delivering. It's because 1) our medical schools accept too many foreign students who never intend to practice medicine here in Canada, because their inflated international tuition fees bolster the economics of the schools of medicine, and 2) because few Canadians who study in Canadian schools of medicine intend to stay in Canada to practice. Here's a reason to revamp how we subsidize medical degrees. 1) We subsidize doctors with a contract saying they agree to practice in Canada for __ years, or 2) if they move to the USA, they owe us the actual cost of their education.

Going to school, college or having a degree and earning is not necessarily true educated person.

2022 *OECD* data comparing educational attainment outcomes around the world ranked *Canada* as 1st with *62.0%* of Canadians, age 25-64, holding a Post Secondary (tertiary) 2-year diploma or 4-year degree (68.4% women; 55.5% men); 31.1% of Canadians holding only a Secondary School (High School) diploma and 6.9% of having only a Primary School education level.\n\nThe *U.S.A.* ranks 6th in the world with 50.1% of Americans, age 25-64, holding a Post Secondary diploma/degree (54.3% women; 46.2% men); 41.4% of Americans holding only a Secondary School diploma and 8.3% having only a Primary School education level.\n\nIn the Post Secondary (tertiary) 25-34 year old age group, Canada ranks 2nd with *66.4%* (75.0% women; 58.0% men) behind S. Korea with *69.3%* (75.9% women / 63.5% men). The U.S.A. ranks 12th with 51.2% (56.9% women; 45.6% men).\n\nIn the Post Secondary, 55-64 age group, Canada ranks at the top with 51.7% (55.1% women; 48.2% men) and the U.S.A. ranking 5th with 45.4% (47.7% women; 42.8% men).

Tyler, thanks for your entertaining and fun videos. My grandfather is a dual citizen but has never renewed his passport or anything and when asked to do so, he outright refuses. He says he hated living there. We live in the Vancouver area of Canada right now. My wife is finishing her registered nursing degree and we are considering moving to washington state, within an hour or so of the Canadian border on temporary work visas (TN1) for a few years. The main reason is the cost of living differences, mostly in housing but a lot of things are cheaper down there too. For example though, the costs of rent or to buy a house in the Vancouver area is insane - 1.5 million is generally a starting point. The cost of a detached house south of the border between Bellingham and Blaine starts around $400,000 ($500,000 CDN). If renting, it's crazy cheaper than here. \n\nThe area we are considering going to is very close to the canadian border, I've never heard of major violence problems in the area. Like one of the other comments you read, we're basically considering moving there to take advantage of a lower cost of living and higher salaries for a bit to try to get ahead. Living in the Vancouver area is such an absolute DRAIN on our finances that it is intolerable. If we didn't move to the US, we'd have to find another place in Canada to go to, but we do like the climate on the coast here. I'd actually just keep commuting to Canada daily to work in Canada since it's so close to the border, and writing the bar exam to be able to practice law in any US state except California, Massachusets, or New York is a pain in the backside to even be able to write it, let alone prepare for it. Just easier for me to keep working here unless we decided to try to make a permanent move somewhere further from the border.\n\nIf we decided to change our minds and apply to stay in the US in the future, there are a lot of the other considerations that other people have raised on top of my own ability to continue as a lawyer. Gun violence in the US is crazy, extreme polarized political views and increasing intolerance against diversity of race, culture, religion, (and while it doesnt affect us directly, it bothers us how LGBTQ people are increasingly targeted with backwards policies and by certain segments of the public), the health care system in canada has it's problems but it's also got it's strong points. We'll never go bankrupt because of a health care issue since we can move back to Canada IF it's ever a problem. Thankfully we are all pretty healthy so it shouldn't be much of a problem for a while at least. And we wouldn't even move there at all if her employment as a nurse doesn't offer health care and better pay than she can obtain here. \n\nOur kids will probably attend post-secondary (college/university) in Canada as dual citizens unless they get a scholarship to a top US school. The costs of post-secondary in Canada appears to be much cheaper than in the US and we have some good colleges/universities that consistently rank high globally.

They don’t realize the harm they’re doing to the ones that already here illegally and are trying to do the best to get do everything right without breaking the laws , such as paying taxes. It’s selfishness from their part for what they’re doing and it’s only harming people like me. I’m was brought here to the US when I was 2 years old I am now 20. I graduated high school , don’t have any felonies or misdemeanors. I have a degree for machine technology and I can’t work because I don’t have a work permit , and these people are coming and getting all these privileges I never got. This is causing bad to those who are already here and are trying to do everything according to the law and yet we have no support in getting atleast a work permit. I agree daca was unconstitutional which is why they’re trying to shut it down but trump was trying to make something happen for teens that were brought here at a young age. Unfortunately people are blind and selfish and only care about themselves, I get it that they live in poverty because so did we. And my beautiful mother suffered so much. But atleast wait until the US can do something about those who are already in weather it’s helping them or not. There’s so much problems happening right now in the United States such as mass shootings. Let the authorities, government officials , etc try to clean up the United States from how bad it’s getting before raiding the border and causing a burden and headache to those who are in office trying to come up with solutions to this madness.

Manitoba as having the worst schools in the nation is a bit of a stretch. I’m not talking about every school we have here but the UofM for example has a top national research program and is great for professional degrees. Just because it’s not the best doesn’t mean there aren’t universities from other provinces that are a lot worse.

What do you expect Canadian citizens are struggling with legit degrees from top schools why do international students expect a better life. Majority of diplomas and certification are scams you will not find a job after please dont random colleges do some research and go to accredited an school.

Where are these millions of new immigrants going to work? Since the election of Liberals, Canada has had the slowest growing economy in the industrialized world! The world expects Canada's lacklustre performance to continure for the next 20 years. So are these new immigrants coming with suitcases full of money to invest in new companies? Are the skilled tradesman coming from developed nations with similar building codes and material or from countries that build houses without any codes or inspection? Do the Medical Doctors receive the same education as 1st world doctors or are they like doctors in most developing and 3rd world countries where they enter medical school straight from Grade 11 and graduate 4-5 years later with a medical degree and their medical experience is all with 3rd world diseases? OR what is more likely is that these new immigrants will have to go back to school (paid for by Canadian taxpayers) to bring their education and skills to the minimum level of Canadians? It will take the average new immigrant 6-10 years before they are making a net positive contribution to the Canadian economy. This would be affordable if our economy was outpacing other industrialised nations OR if we had fewer immigrants but this is a strategy for bankruptcy. My prediction is that the Canadian dollar will be $0.60 USD within 5 years or less. My recommendation is start moving your savings and retirement funds to the USA.

I was born and raised in Canada. My family immigrated in the 70s. Growing up I was proud to be Canadian but after living in other parts of the world I can tell you, Canada isn't it! \n\nFirstly our Prime Minister is a puppet he works for the Commonwealth and whatever they say goes, they profit off all of your hard work. \nThey keep you sick so you rely on the health care system. Medicate you instead of solving the problem. Doctors are exhausted, rude and over worked, emergency rooms are a disaster and if you book an appointment to see your doctor...be sure you're waiting at least a week. If you go to a walk in clinic you risk getting a doctor that seems like they paid for a fake degree.\n\nYou know when you go to a mall in one town and then hear about a mall in another town that has really cool different things??? Small businesses are hard to keep because everything is so expensive. If a person has 6 years study gap between bachelor's degree and high school, is that person eligible to apply? For pnp or ER?

Another issue is that some white families have sold off or abandoned their family homes in once vibrant community's because they have refused to live with other people of color who happen to move in. Then black communities build up over say 50 to 75 years a great community, their own churches , schools, day cares, playground, crime watch and near jobs and easy transportation suddenly others with money wish to expand in those same areas. So taxes go up. Fire insurance goes up. Schools are closed down due to so called lack of budgets. Factory's move out farther. And or new higher technologies come in only looking for a few or certain type of trained skilled workers with higher educational degree's. All of these complex events cause the death of a functional great long standing community. By the time others come and say hey, where are the kids, where is the small local business and the great gardens, farmer markets or book clubs, libraries, community workshops, and black church's giving out food? Trust me its not such a simple answer. Many many other forces are at play. Entire sections of the city and rural areas have gone through displacement.

I spent 8 yrs in Toronto. I left Canada in 2005 after I got the degree and never been back here once. I hate this place so much because \nToo cold \nToo much tax \nStupid beverage culture paying extra 10% tips for meal without reason \nSlow \nteachers. does not teach. We want him taking college in Vancouver, we both have a job here in Chile, and it would be a real challenge, I think as you said, the key is to be flexible and open-mind. I want to take a degree while my kids take the college or even high school, I have a lot to think about yet, difficult decision.

Hmmm not sure I agree with this vid. My friends and I do pretty well here financially. We are all millenials. Even though most of us are Canadian born, we all experience the immigrant life through our parents. We remember what it was like to be poor immigrants. But in the end all of us got the right education (i.e. not a fine arts degree...lol) and have good paying jobs as accountants, software engineers, doctors, lawyers etc... We didnt have any advantages either. We all took out student loans to pay our tuition with no help from our parents. Yet we paid it off, we own our homes, all without being house poor. It can't be that hard. Just go to a legit school, not some third world university.,.. and do do a proper degree. Nobodys gonna hire a aet history major anywhere in the world. Oh and get out of your fucking ethnic bubbles. I have friends who are White, Black, Indian, Chinese, Italian and Portuguese and we all built a decent life for ourselves. Our parents worked hard as immigrants, and this is how we were rewarded.

the only positive thing I've found here is school. I came from Mexico City with a bachelor's degree in Law but decided to study Criminology at Seneca College, and I have to admit that the books are great, but the rest of my new Canadian life is awful: everything is expensive; I've got a minimum wage salary; the weather is extremely cold, etc. I think I will end moving back to my home country.

I have 2 degrees and I went back to school for trades because I couldn’t get a job. Making more than I would in my old field of Law.

The stories of people moving here and then realizing their credentials aren't as valuable and have to go back to school....should have researched this and made proper plans based on this. The same for Canadians moving overseas. Most people are aware your degree here may not be acknowledged in a new country and its up to the person to found out before moving.

I am Italian, lived in Canada for about a year 14 years ago, and since then living in Canada became my life long dream and obsession at the same time. I live in England these days, I work as a Linux engineer and I make more than I can spend. Still I am absolutely unhappy living here, I don't anyone, don't ever go out, I don't feel I belong and likely never will. Unfortunately immigrating to Canada is not an option due to the lack of a university degree, and going to school is really no option for me either. So yes, hearing about these stories of successful immigrants going back home makes me break in tears badly. I'd be happy to take an initial 50% pay cat if I only were given the chance.

I am a TPS holder from el salvador for about 20 years with 3 kids born in Tennessee. and that program will end in September 2019, , i have to go back to my country and there is nothing i can do to stay in this country usa that have gave me everything what i have ; a beautiful family and a house that i am selling for 300,000 a nice car Toyota camry selling for 7000, a Nissan Frontier selling for 8000, a HVAC technical diploma and a good hvac job(60,000a year) but i just woke up and i found out that this dream already ends, ,,,,,,,,,,,, but i am not crying feeling like a Donald Trump victim.........guest what? Nice video, Derek. I'm gonna add something you didn't even mention. Here in the U.S., there is the Patriot Act, and a growing Police State. Our liberties and Constitutional rights are being trampled by the day. Our privacy is being lost at an alarming rate, and there are more checkpoints than ever before, tighter security measures at airports than ever before, metal detectors even at high schools for students just to attend class, and worst of all shootings of innocent people by cops (often homeless, mentally ill, etc.) than ever before. I don't know for sure, but I don't think Canada has the degree of the same problems, and if they do, they certainly aren't at the magnitude that they are happening here in the states. Those shootings are about 2,000-3,000 just in the last year!! Please be careful, especially in California, and know your U.S. Constitutional rights if/when you get stopped on the road or anywhere else.
