Spent some time in the U.S. and has now spent quite awhile in Canada going through the system but still doesn't speak English. Just an observation.

Why don't all these Latin American asylum seekers go to places like Belize, Costa Rica, Panama? The economies and lower crime rates in these countries are good enough to attract many expats from Europe and the United States. Surely for someone seeking asylum they should be okay - and not too far to travel to get there. Plus, they already speak the language! Oh wait - the welfare systems of the US and Canada are so much easier to milk. Yeah, scratch that.

People who can't speak the national language shouldn't be moving to another country especially not illegally. I can't feel sorry for this guy. so what exactly is the problem? there are laws in canada - no you can't just walk in a stay and get benefits. if there is misinformation in the community migrating north, then who is at fault? if anyone from any country, regardless of race, creed, religion, sexual orientation - anything - thinks they can just go to another country with no strings attached they're crazy. I get the feeling this is meant to look like a racist issue - it's not. if you're white as snow, speak english and carry a bible, the rules are the same - you come legally, and go through all the paperwork and checks that are required.

It's this guy's fault for expecting different. People have the wrong impression that Canada has loose immigration laws and just let's anyone into the country. The best and smartest thing any immigrant can do is to learn to speak and write English even though that's not politically correct to say. Canada has done extremely well for Immigrants, and we spend a lot of money on making sure we get hard working decent citizens.. We've recently made it easier for people to immigrate here. A lot of people actually spend a lot of money, get higher education, get English language accreditation and rack up work experience just to get to Canada LEGALLY as an immigrant, where they have to start from the bottom again. 15 years in the US and he apparently does not speak English.  And now, in Canada, he skips on a legal proceeding.  I'd say this fellow is not a top-shelf candidate for citizenship in either country.  He has demonstrated his unwillingness to assimilate (learn some English) and to abide by fundamental laws.

Speaking as a person who came to Canada and hopes to get a PR in the coming year: The view that Canada welcomes anyone can´t be further from the truth. If you are a skilled worker, you´ve gone to school and you are relatively young, getting a citizenship is very straightforward, but if you don´t, Canada won´t have you, and you know what? it´s OK: all countries have the right to determine their immigration policy and enforce it. Canada´s point system is very transparent, you can calculate your points by yourself online. Not here to judge that guy, but a little research might have saved him a lot of trouble.
