Sooooo.. here is my own side of the story .. i am happy he said *if you are stable*… well for most ppl in a situation like mine.. jobless here in Nigeria or living on 50k salary, no connection to get good jobs, nobody willing to help, getting a canadian visa is like winning the lottery.. its hard dere but i bet we will b able to cope nd cnt complain bcos it already is hard here too(worse)… we cn start small and grow… as for the racism honestly the tribalism here too is real.. all i am trying to say is what can they throw at us that we havnt already experienced, i mean ppl in my class… so was i happy when i got my visa some months ago? 100%.. also 100% ready for the new challenge.. long story short there are two sides to being an immigrant… please correct me if i am wrong ?

I'm Canadian. I was born here, raised here, and have lived here all my life. However, my parents are American (they came during the Vietnam war), and I have full dual citizenship. I could cross the border into the U.S., get a job, start working and live there for the rest of my life if I ever chose to do so.\n\nHowever, I will never live in the U.S. Why? The cost of healthcare insurance and healthcare in general is definitely a part of that, but another huge factor is the socio-political atmosphere down there that is very unappealing to me. Everything from politics, the gun issue, much higher violence than we have in Canada, more racism issues, the media, and from what I have observed from decades of visits to the U.S.: there just seems to be a lot more people that are on edge and hostile than I am used to compared to Canada as well. For me, the general culture and mindset is just not something I want to live amongst.\n\nThere are some things I enjoy in the U.S., and there ARE wonderful people there too. I have several friends in the U.S. (born and raised), not to mention my entire extended family is American. But for me, the U.S. is a nice enough place to visit, but it's not somewhere I'd ever want to live.\n\nNo matter what kind of trip I take to the U.S., whenever I get back home to Canada it's always like a deep sigh of relief. I feel safer. I feel more relaxed. I feel at home. No matter how good my trip was, when I set foot back on Canadian soil again I always get a feeling of humble gratitude that I live here. For me, other than the warmer weather and some of the sights the U.S. has to offer, I'm much, much happier in Canada. I feel very fortunate to live here.\n\nAs a side note, I have never found our public healthcare system here in Canada to be lacking whatsoever. Any healthcare I, or anyone else I know that has received any, has always been prompt, of excellent quality, and reassuringly delivered in a professional manner.\n\nAs an example, in 1994, my father had a seizure and it was discovered that he had a benign brain tumour that had to be removed. Not even a week later, he was booked for his surgery and he had his procedure. He was operated on by one of the top two neurosurgeons in North America at the time, he spent three weeks in recovery at the hospital, and he had months of rehab afterward. About 2 weeks later, he had another seizure (the last one he ever had), he stayed in another hospital for an additional two weeks.\n\nHowever, all of what I just mentioned, and I mean ALL of it, was paid for by our public healthcare system. All he had to do was show his healthcare card and sign a release form for his surgery, and that was it. Nothing more. There were literally ZERO bills, no insurance companies, no paperwork, no phone calls, and ZERO hassle. Nothing.\n\nAnd no, our family was NOT rich or privileged either. Just an average middle class family. However, my dad's neurosurgeon told us his surgery and all the months of care he received afterward would have cost $180,000 (in 1994!), and our family would have been out on the street if it wasn't for our healthcare system. My dad also had a very minor heart attack in 2007 which didn't require surgery, and he didn't have to pay a dime or do anything else other than show his healthcare card for that either. Since those two events, my father has lived a healthy, normal life thanks to our public healthcare.\n\nIn Canada, EVERYONE receives that kind of care, regardless of if they are a billionaire or they are homeless. Because that's the moral and ethical thing to do, and is just one of the many reasons why I plan on staying here.

I am Canadian, my husband is American. I moved to the USA 11 years ago. I live in a liberal state (by American standards) with little violence (by American standards). I like where we live and enjoy most of the people that I interact with. I would move back to Canada in a heartbeat. I must confess that I felt like I stepped back in time 20 years when I moved here - labor standards in the US are so behind the rest of the world (maternity leave, paid time off, job protections, etc). To a Canadian, US culture feels accepting of racism, violence, us vs them mentalities, gun culture, religious and political fanaticism. I still can’t get over how “normal” Americans think their healthcare system is…. most other countries think it is absolutely nuts! I have good insurance, but if I ever develop a serious illness….I will move back to Canada where I can attempt to keep my health AND still have a house to live in. On the surface, Americans and Canadians look alike - but I still feel the cultural differences every day. I’m sure that America feels safe and wonderful to Americans who grew up here - but it can be difficult for people who grew up with different values to agree that these things make America “great”.

I'm surprised there weren't more comments about racism. I haven't been south in years, but racism was so prevalent it was one of the main things I remember about going there. There was a beach in Milwaukee where the white people used the sandy area and the black people used the rocky area. There were no signs saying who belonged where, but it was obvious all the local people knew the score. Racism exists in Canada, especially with the first nations people, but it doesn't dominate your experience as a visitor the way it did for me in the US.

Socialization isn’t the problem. Education is the problem and institutionalized racism combined. Make certain areas of \nThe United States disgusting. And it’s not New England or the West Coast or the Midwest so it’s not east north or west so if you want disgusting you only have one option left.

Reasons I would not move to the States:\n\n1.Education is better in Canada.\n2. Too many people on the sex registry and many around you but haven't been caught yet.\n3. Police are poorly trained\n4. Pay for service Healthcare \n5. Gun laws (and I have a PAL license!) \n6. racism \n7. Very socially unaware of the rest of the planet. (I just don't think I could live around such closed-minded, under educated peope)\n8. Angry communicators \n9. Blind arrogance \n10. Too many people\n11. As a child I spent a few summers with family in Hudson , Ohio ..a great tume and full of great memories...\nI have ebhiyed maby trups to at least 8 States ...loved my visits .\nI did a job last summer in Atlanta ..was there a week . Wow , I was ill prepared to be trsated sooo poorly by ny host employers staff ..\nI was 63 then , 2 yrs ago.. all others in gge group were bkack Americans .. the shick was veing faced with all out ageism and racism by this 4o yr sinething bunch .. cut ny employmebt diwn and came back to Ontario. Just because there are only white employees in certain company, doesn't immediately mean that somebody is racist. Believe me, every company wants to have most profit from its work, so if any black/asian/latino would bring more $$$ to the company they would be hired over somebody that is white. But some people are looking for racism everywhere.

I live in Toronto and I am not rich. I am regular person. \nIf you are an immigrant and especially if you are considered from visible minority group aka not white, DO NOT leave Toronto at all ! Work hard and make it work for you. I am sure the majority people from your coutires in Canada are located in Toronto and its close cities. If you chose to live outside this multicultural heaven called Toronto then expect to deal with deep racism. Yes people in Canada are rasicst althogh it is not openly like USA.\nIf you are into education and you want to do your degree, move to Montreal. Tuition fees in Montreal are way more cheaper than in Toronto or other parts of Canada. I lived in Montreal before and I went to university there. Montreal is great for education, aba rent are cheaper than Toronto but not for living there if you are visible immigrant. You will never feel you belong down there. Where as in Toronto, you will feel you belong to it within 30 mins max of you arruval. Toronto's motto are : you belong here and we have been waiting for you.\n62%of people in Toronto weren't born in Canada. You will find your community from your country in Toronto and the people are well established. I have been in different cities in Canada and I always felt stranger, even cities as close as ashawa.\nIn conclusion I would say to the visible minority immigrants stay in Toronto as much as you can for work and if you want to study in university go to Montreal. There are two major English universities in Montreal :Concordia university and McGill university, where McGill is one of top 10 university in the world.\n\nFor you Alina, I understand what you are saying and you can go somewhere in Canada and try it out with no racial or inclusiveness issues. Completely agree with you. I spent 6 years in Canada and quit. Both me and my husband are highly educated but had to end up with minimum wage jobs to begin with. Winters are brutal. 2013 we experienced minus 40 with snow storms !! And keeping urself PACKED in ur home for months is extremely depressing. Medical facility inspite of being free is a joke !! You are better off getting basic medicines from India. They want to fix everything with Tylenol, that too such low potency that even 20 pills will not make any difference. And just 1 crocin in India and you can run a marathon next day. Education too is pathetic. They need a calculator to add 5 +5 !! Here 6 yr old kids do mental mathematics on 4 figures in their heads !! No university in Canada can even come close to IIT'S, IIM'S and IISC ever. 12th std math and science here in India is probably taught to engineering degree students on Canada. Moreover only Asian kids like Indians, Koreans Chinese kids ever reach university level education the rest are dropouts and busy with sex and drugs and temporary jobs to fend for the same. Mind you there is a lot of racism in Canada. Most whites hate Asians as they think that we have 'snatched' away their jobs !! They don't like it when we end up buying own homes within 2 to 3 yrs of migrating. Grocery is expensive. Commercial dairy products are high on hormones and other chemicals. It's crazy how many women there have issues with their reproductive organs. Hormone related obesity, diabetes is rampant. As she said only if you go there thru a company on projects ect it's alright. Else there is no place like India in every aspect.

Been in Canada for approximately 25 years. I can say that the effect that Canada has on a legal immigrant is neither here nor there. If you can make lemonade out of any lemon you’re dealt, you will thrive in Canada (and anywhere else where your efforts are not overwhelmingly quashed by corruption, blatant racism or other forms of segregation). \n \nLynn, I was a lecturer in Kenya, went back to school here in Canada after wallowing in culture shock the first year, then circled back to teaching in college again after an arduous journey in school, but this time in a different field. \n \nAfter becoming a single mother of four kids, I had to also hustle on the side to build a small business empire along my life’s ladder. Partnership with God, goal clarity, the get-up-and-go, and relentlessness truly work. It isn’t the size of the dog but the fight in the dog that does it, regardless of where you live. \n \nThe starting point for a new immigrant can be very low due to the weather, unpreparedness and culture shock, but if you know that the only way is up, and are self-motivated, those challenges are soon behind you as the tests become testimonies. \n \nBy comparison people have more human rights here regardless of their status. The wheels of justice grind slow but they do grind fine. Women and children have equal rights with men. Politicians are mostly there to serve not necessarily to exploit. \n \nOpportunities for self-development galore - including being trained to become employable and going to school at any age (sometimes for free while you are still at the bottom of the ladder). There are food banks so you never go hungry if it came to that. The disabled are better treated with dignity. \n \nThere are prolonged parental leaves for both moms and dads for up to 18 months. Commensurate with earnings, parents under certain thresholds are given Canada child tax benefits and other supplements for each child under 18 years of age. \n \nDepending on the number of kids and their ages, the money can add up handsomely. Not to mention that there’s no tuition to pay for primary and high school students. Tuition fees start at post-secondary level. \n \nTo see a doctor is free as it is paid for by taxes. It the meds that you and/or your insurance pays for. Some medical equipments may be paid for by either or both the individual/insurance and the government depending on eligibility. \n \nBy and large, there’s cleanliness of common spaces. There’s also safety and relative peace. At least wherever I have lived, I can’t tell you how many times I forgot to lock my door with impunity. \n \nThere’s a lot more stressful work here in my opinion, but like you said Lynn, systems work a lot more efficiently and effectively. \n \nThe elephant in the room is the extra hard work that those living abroad must put in to fulfil expectations back home. Also known as black tax, the overwhelming financial dependency of relatives on their diasporan loved ones places undue stress on many here, especially because there are no short cuts to getting money here. \n \nAnyway, Lynn, thanks for such a great topical issue you’ve shared. I have to stop here as I have written a lot. I would much rather live in the USA, just way more things to do, can live in any climate I want, more fun, more outgoing people. People view America though the lens of the media, which only talks about the bad and people get brainwashed by this. No other country works so well with the amount of diversity America has (Canada is not close), it is a very tolerant country, we even broadcast individual instances of racism to the whole world, no other country does that. I make more money here, more opportunities. Just my opinion though, to each their own, I have a blast in America.

I am a nurse in canada their is something called systemic racism but you need to work in jobs that suit us.first you dont even have to go to university go to a community college which is cheaper volunteer then the jobs can be easy .plus live in rural areas where life is a little affordable

I traded homophobia for safety in Canada alot of what he says is true the racism part hit me the hardest but LGBT immigrants tend to dont have any homes to go back. Canada has provided that security and for that everyday go out can walk the streets withput the fear of saftey in that aspect.

I enjoyed my time in Canada, moved here in 2012. the people are friendly didn't experience any racism or discrimination. Early life in Canada was a bit of a struggle but after a couple of years, I settled down.

I can confirm that there's really nothing in Canada. They have no jobs and the Jobs they give to Black Immigrants in particular, whether you have a degree or not, are generally seasonal summer jobs in warehouses, working with plastic injection molding machines. When winter arrives, you get laid of until the next summer and the cycle continues. It was the first place l learnt that racially motivated official murder of Black People by White Police Officers is standard practice in the United States, because it's also a practice in Canada but not as rampant as it is in the United States. \n\nI just don't know who is spreading this false and deceptive information or understand why we're being bombarded worldwide with ads about Canada wanting immigrants to come over for jobs. I was born and raised in Toronto to Hungarian immigrants, and my whole neighborhood was of mixed immigrants, so I grew up early making friends of different races and nationalities. I don't dispute though that it does exist, I have seen it and heard it. I too have been the victim of racism, yes that's right, but because I am white and blonde, I get remarks mostly from men of different races, anywhere I go on the bus and in stores, there are men of some races who just stare at me with a look that makes me very uncomfortable, and I hear sexual remarks. The other thing that bothers me is that white people are often being blamed, but yet there are different races that hate each other, this I know because I have friends of different nationalities who hate others not like them. Some nationalities even think that I have never had spices in my food, and that I dont know how to paint a wall or use tools, there is so much I can say about this. I guess everybody should sit down and talk to each other, learn about each other.

Simple...live to work vs work to live....as Canadian born visible minority...I can confirm no matter where you move in Canada it will all be the same story.....The systemic racism is very real but more about bullying. Its so passive that you never know when it hits you until you think deep about it. I read the comments about regret....and I totally agree, about the life back home. So I will tell you this. If you really miss back home, save up, let your kids finish their education and move back home and enjoy your life that you always wanted. Canada is not for everyone...and the move you stay disgruntle about everyday life....its no living...

This is an interesting overview of Canada and its many issues. I would love to see a follow up video or two looking into these same issues but from a few different perspectives. 1) regionally - Canada is very diverse so our regions are quite different in culture, problems and cause of each. The major regions are: Maritimes/Ontario/Quebec/Prairies/West Coast/ Territories. 2) because of our diverse landscape different races are attracted to different areas. I have not studied this impact on our racism and political issues but would love to see someone like you do so. It appears to me that immigrants are disproportionately gathered along the US/Canada border and big cities, particularly east and west coast. First Nations are disproportionately populated in Rural and northern areas where resources overall are less available to all races. I would expect to find that this population disbursement would also reflect in our political leadership. For example more populated cities are far more likely to have immigrant own businesses and politicians, In rural and northern communities politicians are more likely to be white because First Nations politicians would be more inclined to work within the First Nations political channels where they can actually do more good for their communities. 3) The diversity that makes up 'white' as a race. It appears to me that Canada historically has been more inclined to attract 'White' races versus other 'colours'. We have large populations of British, Swedish, Irish, Russian, Ukrainian, French, Norwegian, and Polish to name a few. All of which have large diversity in their culture and history but are often classified as 'white'. 4) The massive impact the past 5 + years of politics and world affairs have had on the divisions within Canada. Personally I see and feel far, far more judgements between races, economics and regions than ever before.

Try some semblence of justice! Stealing and eradication of Immigrants and their estates and this is condoned country wide! Racism, prejudism, theft, abuse and horrific prejudism of Immigrant citizens! Targeted non stop, to.steal everything by Canadian strangers! Greed , crimes and courts condone the Canadian theft!

The issue is Canada is being too selective with the countries they are taking from ( only two India and china), but it's racist to say that, the two countries with the most people in the world.... would overlap the amount of Canadians in the country with only sending like 2% of their population.... why are we immigrating a unlimited amount of people from countries that can over right our populations 1000x over. So all the other countries and cultures who want to have their families come to Canada will be pushed back over selective immigration. \n\nIf you wondered why Jagmeet buckled under the great ruler... i would argue this is why. Hard working 1st gen immigrants, or Fully born Canadian Indians that i know struggle, because this country didn't allow them to settle in with all their hard work, because they kept the door open and kept letting people in without making sure the economy can handle it

I enjoy my work. Not everyone has the same experience. There is plenty of racism over seas with people of the same skin colour. I was born here and am doing quite well. \n\nWhen you immigrate here of course you will be starting from the beginning, unless you come here wealthy. Not every job will be enjoyable back in Nigeria. It depends on your own perspective. Don’t let others experience dictate how you will do here in Canada. It truly is the best country.

It's astounding to see how many residents complain about living in Canada, immigrants, or not. I also can't overlook the Indigenous canadians' battles and the systemic racism that inhabits this country and creates so much negativity in the overall atmosphere of the place. Bad government leadership, greed, and ZERO accountability in gov. leadership is at the root and blatant at this point.

Simply put, he is wrong to make this assessment having spent less than 3-4 years in the country, is yet to have the qualifications that he came with vetted so he can apply for the jobs he is trained to do, and is still a student. I can understand that due to his age.. (which I guess is 45-55) he is also hard-pressed to settle quick and start making money. He needs to be patient pay his dues and integrate into the system. Racism will fade and he will learn how to deal with it. I wish him well and hope he settles quick.

EVERY country has racism.. and in Canada it is not usually the White people who are the most Racist.. Chinese and India-n people are very racist. Try going to Surrey and you will experience some Racist Indians. I live in the Prairies and it is definitely less racist than West Coast BC, Montreal and Toronto regions.
