Am I the only one who prefers Australia because it's got a high quality of life like Canada and warm climates like the US? I'm saying this as a Canadian-American.

I totally agree with you Lloyd Douglas and his column black in Canada. I find it to be swept under the carpet as far as racism is concerned, they smile in front of you but behind you they Stab you in the back .well the Americans is right up front I can work with you but I won’t socialize with you, at least you’re truthful.\n\n I find Canadians to be very two face , Hidden they true feeling and pretend a lot . I have experienced the first time in my life racism was within Canada and it brought me to tears. Now when i hear someone speak Chinese I simply join their conversation. It is an opportunity for me to practice speaking Mandarin. Turbans are actually quite useful during snowstorms. As an African American it was heartbreaking seeing Leeland going through all this especially when he went to the Super-mart bug pharmacy store or whatever it's called. It's grows from you being calm, to paranoid, then full on anxiety knowing that you are being followed or watched. Then there's an underlying feeling of anger and you keep telling yourself to relax because you haven't done any thing wrong. I've experienced this many times b4 especially when I was younger or go into a store with my younger sister who is 17, I am 27. There's solidarity in knowing someone else experiences this as well and understands how you feel, but it's sad as well because no one should experience this.

Psychology student here. In the interest of accurate information, I would like to point out some flaws I find with some of the studies in this documentary and question the conclusions reached. I understand that CBC Marketplace are not personality psychologists and therefore cannot be expected to produce the same quality of work as a scientist. However, I think it is worthwhile to think critically about the information in the media that we consume. I am also open to anyone who wants to engage in debating the contents of this documentary.\n\n\nThe following are some notes I took while watching the documentary outlining the individual hypotheses of the studies I think are flawed and descriptions of their respective accompanying errors. \n\n\nThere are three possible research questions, and thereby dependent variables, being answered by the apartment hunting studies.\n1. If there is no discrimination between the white man and the first-nations man, then they should get equal treatment, including quotes and availability, when apartment hunting. \na. Could the gender of the landlord be a confounding variable (perhaps men are more discriminatory than women)? \n \n2. If there is no discrimination between the white man and the first-nations man between Toronto, Montreal, Regina, and Victoria, then they should get equal treatment, including quotes and availability, when apartment hunting. \na. Could total apartments visited be a confounding variable? (4 in Toronto, 3 in Montreal, Regina, and Victoria) \nb. Could the gender of the landlord be a confounding variable (perhaps men are more discriminatory than women)? \nc. They only showed the black man apartment hunting in some of the trials. I am considering him out of the study for consistency purposes. The first-nations man is the only one who got unfair treatment in the footage of apartment hunting. \n \n3. Possible hypothesis: If male landlords/agents are more discriminatory than female landlords/agents, then the white man and the first-nations man will get different treatment at different Canadian apartments in equally diverse cities. \na. Don’t know all the information about the genders of the landlords/agents, not all the footage is shown, but the ones where they get ripped off are male. The others shown are female. The remaining interactions are not shown.\n\n\nThere are also some factors that may have influenced the racial bias survey and, in my estimation, rendered it scientifically unreliable.\n\n\n1. The bias survey and accompanying tests at the CBC attributed the differences between the studies to unconscious racism. What if it was just due to familiarity with certain racial groups over others? \na. The black participants had no bias between European-American and African Americans, supposedly indicating no racism, while the white and first-nations participants did, supposedly indicating racism. Is it possible that another interpretation of this result is that bias is a function of familiarity: that we are comfortable with the majority demographic in the geographical location we live in, as well as our own kind. Therefore, the black guys are less biased against black people due to being both black and living in a white majority demographic? \nb. The participants took the survey knowing the objectives of the researchers was to study racial discrimination. They might have influenced the answers they gave \nc. Whether the participants agreed with identity politics or not was a confounding factor that was not controlled . You can only be racially unbiased biased if you think that racial identity is a means of accurately viewing the world. People who do not believe in the existence of identity politics may answer the questions quite differently, which could be a different reason for the results.\nd. I took the study myself. The words that participants were required to match were a mix of adjectives and nouns. It is known within psychology that nouns have higher levels of imagery. This was not properly controlled and therefore is another confounding variable. \n \nAll the other studies looked fine to me. I welcome any discussion on my observations.

Over the protests of parents, they put white children on buses and sent them to African schools and vice versa.\n\nThey tried with money, special programs, relaxed standards, and endless hand-wringing to close the “achievement gap.” To keep white backlash in check they began punishing public and even private statements on race.\n\nThey hung up Orwellian public banners that commanded whites to “Celebrate Diversity!” and “Say No To Racism.”\n\nNothing was off limits if it might salvage the experiment.\nSome thought that the Talented Tenth would lead the way for African people. A group of elite, educated Africans would knock down doors of opportunity and show the world what Africans were capable of. There is a Talented Tenth. They are the African Americans who have become entrepreneurs, lawyers, doctors and scientists. But ten percent is not enough. For the experiment to work, the ten percent has to be followed by a critical mass of people who can hold middle-class jobs and promote social stability. That is what is missing.\n\nThrough the years, too many African people continue to show an inability to function and prosper in a culture unsuited to them.\n\nDetroit is bankrupt, the south side of Chicago is a war zone, and majority-black cities all over America are beset by degeneracy and violence. And Africans rarely take responsibility for their failures. Instead, they lash out in anger and resentment. Across the generations and across the country, as we have seen in Detroit, Watts, Newark, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, and now Ferguson, rioting and looting are just one racial incident away.\n\nThe white elite would tell us that this doesn’t mean the experiment has failed. We just have to try harder. We need more money, more time, more understanding, more programs, more opportunities. But nothing changes no matter how much money is spent, no matter how many laws are passed, no matter how many African geniuses are portrayed on TV, and no matter who is president.\n\nSome argue it’s a problem of “culture,” as if culture creates people’s behavior instead of the other way around. Hello, I just watched your video. Three years after you made it. I hope you are still with us and a very belated Welcome. Many people throughout the world seem to have so many stereotypes about Americans. Whether it is good or bad there typically is some truth in a stereotype. Overall it seems like you are enjoying yourself and no matter what there is no place like home. I would think no matter what your current situation is you still miss Canada as I would miss the United States if I were to move to Canada. \nA couple things you mentioned in the video were not correct and as with anything there may be a little truth in the matter but yet still incorrect.\nThose who do not have health insurance are not charged or taxed $150 monthly. There is a provision in the affordable care act (ACA) that penalizes certain individuals who make above a certain dollar amount. The amount is either $150 or $300 for the entire year. I concur any monetary penalty against anyone for not having health insurance is outrageous. I could be wrong but I believe this aspect of the ACA was never implemented under President Obama and it was indefinitely suspended or revoked by President Trump. I also feel like I need to address your thoughts about the United States all about war. I believe the American people are like most other people and want peace and civility. The government and major defense contractors have differing opinions at times. Of course there is plenty of people who are war hawks but they are in the minority. Most of us are absolutely sick of war. We currently have been at war for almost 19 years. That's six complete world war 2's in their entirety. \nI think you were being awfully generous when you said obesity is on par with the rest of the world!! Unfortunately there is far to many fat people here and the problem is only getting worse because the media says be happy and proud you are fat. Celebrating obesity is absolutely insane and it sends the wrong message to young people. If a close one is fat of course I love them but I also tell them privately that they are a walking heart attack. Why does there seem to be so many more black Canadians who are first generation, born to Caribbean parents, than descendants of the North American slaves? I’ve only met the Caribbean or African ones

When the Americans and the Canadians took control of their present respective territories for themselves, they did so against the hierarchy consisting of people of similar ethnic makeups. I’m a an American that is strongly against illegal immigrants but I think this type of man is not the one I want out. Liberals assume we hate them and are racist but we’re not. We simply don’t want our tax dollars to keep funding other people’s lives while we can’t even provide for our own people. He is a hard worker who is providing for his family. His wife and kids look like good people also. I want the US to be a stepping stone for people like him. He is working hard, earning money and ensuring a better future for his children. Have fun coming to travel to toronto in august and september. There wont be any affordable hotel rooms available as theyll all be occupied with these opportunistic people who just decided to walk in our country illegally and youll be left to paying WAY MORE $$$$ for expensive hotel rooms, if you can even find one. We hear you but simply don't listen to you. Here's a simple fact you may be able to wrap your minds around. The world has changed. You cannot simply pick a time out of history and say that you want to go back to the way things were some 70 years ago. A despot has decided to ethnically cleanse his country ... for seven years that i, and as such human beings by nature are of the mindset they'd prefer to live and try to seek a better life for themselves and their families. But you don't focus on that fact. You focus on the nickels and dimes being spent on accommodation. We get it, you don't like people putting a burden on your system. The USA... wealthiest nation on the earth would prefer to not allow migrants into their county. You could afford to open up your country but are fearful of the financial burden and I have seen some Americans question why these illegals are getting free food and education on our dime. Consider an investment in your future. In 50 years the amount of money spent on these migrants fleeing from desperate situations is a paltry sum Mr Scrooge. BUT if one of those people makes a dramatic difference to your country then think how far ahead you will be. \nThe alternative is to send back the refugees or illegals and wish them well. That would be a catastrophic waste of potential life. So are you really worried about hotel costs in the grand scheme of things. Are your really? Pitiful.

Immigration has ALWAYS been hard but many people make life more difficult when they don't understand a country's laws and/or fail to follow those laws. I know a man who came to the USA with $50 and managed to work and send money to his wife and then one day he wrote to his wife to say he couldn't send any more money because he was buying a bakery. Then he sent for her and they raised two sons, worked very hard in his little business, sent his sons to a private university. They followed the law and all are successful now. I also know a man from Colombia who came to the USA legally and a U.S. businessman saw how diligently he worked and helped him start a business. The American dream works. More than 720,000 new citizens were sworn in recently (in 2016, if my memory is correct).

If the so called leaders did their job, and protected the borders, and obeyed the law, these illegal immigrants wouldn't be in this mess, it's also hard for the ones who really wants to make a good life and integrate into society, when the law breaking illegal immigrants don't want to learn the language or integrate into American society and obey the law

I feel for Jose, yet I wonder why he is not angry with his own government, with his own country for making him feel it was impossible for him to live and work in his own country. Why can he not go back there? How is that system lacking and what can be done to change it so that people don’t feel forced to leave. I find it odd that no one ever reports on these South American governments - what are they doing so wrong that their own citizens are refugees from their own country. Why can’t we stop blaming and find a solution to this problem? Why is it framed that it is the United States or Canada’s fault for upholding immigration laws, their own countries insist upon them. it’s odd.

The only Blacks allowed to live in Canada are those that are from the Caribbean Islands as part of North America and the Royals as Knights of Canada who are Black Indians as Métis and they are the famous Singers in Toronto and also famous Hollywood Actors. Nobody else is allowed to be here except Black Americans but they never are here in Canada. The only time we ever had African Americans in Canada were the ones using the Underground Railroad to escape Slavery in southern USA from English Slave traders in the South. They were here in Toronto in 1814 and stayed for 13 months and then left again as it is too cold here for Africans and they got help to avoid Andrew Jackson and his slave traders to escape back to Africa to the Ivory Coast. This is a great documentary. I assumed Canada was very inclusive and multicultural. I never heard about slavery in Canada or racism there. As an African-American woman I want to know all about the experiences of BLACK PEOPLE all over the world because we are connected. Many of our families were torn apart during slavery. Most of us can’t trace our history five generations. I’m glad we have YouTube to find information through documentaries like this one.

growing up in canada, i felt left out in the blk community b/c i am a 5th generation blk cdn on mom's side and 3rd on my dad's - when other black ppl not canadian born met me - i tell them i'm cdn, but i always used to get the question - where are you really from - they were looking for me to say the islands - when i told them my paternal grandma was born in 1901 in canada - that's when the questions stopped. i've been told that b/c i wasn't from the islands, i had no culture in college, but a mbr of the black student society put him in his place i heard he got into a lot of trouble. i was asked what do we eat as in food as canadians what kind of music do we listen to - at our blk canadian weddings, the only carribean song played was hot hot hot by arrow - we played straight up r and b and motown. i hv been rejected by other blk men b/c i'm not west indian enough...it was hurtful. even with 'friends' they made of my cdn heritage but i used to think, why are you making fun of me knowing that my family and ancestors were in canada first - they were 1st generation - i live in the usa now and i'm with an african american man - he has never treated me as if i were different and he loves going w/me to canada. my parents told me it was jealousy on those ppl's parts - one guy i used to be friends with in college, when i went to his house, his mom was from the islands, when she met me - she said, 'you cdn ppl are loud' and that did it for me - i didn't date her son but when he met my parents, they never said any of that crap to him. in the usa, the african americans don't treat differently at all - my ex mom in law thought we were american but decided to live in canada - b/c she was surprised that blacks do live in canada. her other daughter in law's family were from the islands - but she gravitated more to my family and felt comfortable around them more than her family and this ex sis in law would brag about the islands this and that and she would make comments about my looks being skinny and such but it was jealousy - i didn't care much for her b/c she was very insecure. i felt once again, i was a young girl in college again - being around island ppl....i would love to meet drake and ask him did he feel left out and isolated because he wasn't from the islands - he makes me very proud being a blk canadian - his dad is african american and his mom is jewish. i still hv dealt w/racism not much with wht ppl, but with my own ppl - which is quite sad and on top of it-colorism, that also played a part from my family - being called pygmy, chocolate dip, nappy hair - it hurt but these so called relatives, they aren't all that anymore, they had hard lives as children...when ppl see something in you that is special and they don't have, that's when their ugliness shows -

I am actually shocked to see this information. I did not know. I travelled to Vancouver & Vancouver Island 5X. 2X with my African-American girlfriend. I didn't see any biased behavior at all. Of course, I was not looking for it. We were treated courteously on both sides of the boarder. My grandmother was held as a White slave for most of her youth (indentured servant) in Canada. So, I knew through her that it was one of the possibilities. I am sorry to learn of it. This is a great issue for Americans to get over.

I took one of these tests years ago, and I wasn't surprised to find out I had a moderate preference for African Americans over European Americans, because I was born and raised in Detroit, but I also found out I saw Asians as 'Less Foreign' than White people... We live in N.Y. about 2 hrs from the border to Canada and we love to go to NOTL for a quick vacation whenever we can - usually 4 or 5 times a year! We find Canadians to be WAY more chill than Americans and we love visiting Canada. One thing I'll tell you is figure out the insurance because we've had employees who didn't bother to do this resulting in them having none. When that happens, and you file your income taxes, the IRS takes a fine out of your return. The first year it's like $100, but it goes up each year. After a few years they can fine you like $600. Depending on how much you earn you may be able to apply for assistance in paying your health care premium or may not have to pay at all. I would encourage you to do that before you start getting fined...and welcome to the USA lol!

I'd like to address this to the woman who went to one of Trump's rallies dressed as a Moslem with her head covered with a scarf and having a sign that reads, 'I come in peace'. I don't know why she was asked to be escorted out, but by her own words the people in the crowd were throwing questions at her as to whether she had a bomb under her cloak. Well, whether she knew it or not, she provoked the crowd by wearing the mark of a Moslem - her cloak. Also, by going to the rally dressed the way she was, she knew before hand that she'd be treated that way. On her part, I see that as provocation. Had she gone plainly dressed or attired like everybody else, there would have been no adverse reaction toward her. I don't know what she could have said why she was asked to be escorted out, but she fully knows that the whole of America had been given the real and true picture of Islam - one of terror, murder, beheading, bombs, war, and blood. How do Moslems expect the most compassionate, kind, benevolent people in the world to act? So, please, use your common sense and do not see America as the enemy, the aggressor, or the provocateurs. They're not. They are just being vigilant knowing that the enemy could be so sly, cunning and untrustworthy. Islamic people,we welcomed you to our country. Don't think that we are not watching you. We have given you a new start for a happy life compared to the life you have had in your native lands, but we are guarding against an invasion that your evil governments have designed for our beloved country. The truth of the matter is that you are our guests in our country, and you don't have he right to demand of us what you like, especially when you want us to change our laws just to accommodate or please you. The more attacks you perpetrate against Americans, the more we will be true to our resolve to deport you. Good Moslems, show your rage against the radicals amongst you. If you don't, you'll be sorry, because willy nilly, you'll be affected too. You cannot be in America and refuse to live by the laws we live by.
