I’m born & raised in Montreal, Quebec and while it’s extremely multicultural and has an incredible education system, we have been experiencing a continuous housing crisis. Every year the rent prices and general cost of living are skyrocketing yet wages remain the same. It’s actually becoming a huge problem in Montreal. Young people are being pushed out as prices are starting to little by little be comparable to Toronto. \nAnd don’t get me started on the hate Anglophones receive here. Even Montreal natives like myself who are historically English get discriminated against every day. \nThe Quebec government is pushing the English language out of Quebec, making it harder and harder for Anglophones to be able to function and live practically here. You can’t even go to the hospital and get service. If you don’t speak French you can’t call and speak with any government services, and even businesses are forced to have French names, and only conduct their business in the French language. \nI myself am bilingual, but for someone who doesn’t speak the language, or is learning having trouble it’s nearly impossible to live in Quebec as they wouldn’t even be able to get a job. The discrimination Anglophones receive is insane and we are seen as a ‘bottom of the barrel’ minority, which is so sad seeing that this is where I was born and raised and where I call my home. \nThey’re taking away more and more public & social services and literally funnelling multi millions of dollars of funding , which is desperately needed for homelessness and many other social problems we have within Montreal and it’s all now going towards pushing the French language in Montreal (we literally have what’s called the ‘language police’ who’s job is to enforce French. They will give businesses thousands of dollars of tickets and even shut them down all because someone is caught speaking English) \nHopefully something will change soon or else Montreal is going to continue to become a place completely taken over by hate and discrimination and it will experience a MASS exodus (which is already starting).

Hahahah! In Canada, they give you a job, they expect you to do your job while you’re on the clock. In Nigeria you are working and having fun. That’s why one country is developed and the other is not. The one has functional institutions, nothing works in the other. It’s no wonder why anyone migrating from a country like Nigeria would have problems initially getting used to a system like Canada or the US where productivity is of the utmost importance. Also the “big man” syndrome often common in most developing countries does not exist in most of these developed nations. It takes some Nigerian professionals a little while to get off the high horse of their “bigmanism” and get used to the near egalitarian state of these societies. Plus, you have to go through a process of licensure before the degrees you brought with you are worth anything. Before then you have to endure with odd jobs and answer to your superiors at work. \n\nIt’s a process, and all those who migrate to Canada and the US have to go through it. The reward? You have the opportunity to give you and your kids a better life.

As an immigrant myself, I know, understand, and appreciate this and think until developing countries appreciates this, they will continue to struggle.

My philosophy is simple, if a country accommodates you with a work Visa and you’re hoping to get citizenship one day. There’s no reason to talk smack about them online, if you don’t like it go back home and talk from your home country about how “bad” it was.

Our current crises here in Canada are largely due to recent, unreasonable immigration targets. I'm not anti-immigration - we need immigration - but some questions need to be asked. 1. Are newcomers actually being matched to the areas in which we have labour shortages? The short answer is NO. 2. Would it not be more sensible to increase immigration in ratio to our ability to build new housing? Instead of the total disconnect we have now. Especially if many of the newcomers aren't actually being employed in construction industries? 3. We've had labour shortages and housing bubble issues for over a decade at least; how did the labour shortage crisis and housing crisis suddenly get so bad? Short answer: they didn't. Unreasonable immigration took a shaky situation and pushed it over into crisis almost overnight. 4. Most of our universities and colleges are now relying on international student fees to meet their budgets. Most of them are now operating as businesses, including property developers, instead of educational institutions. (I'm a university prof - 20+ years teaching - I can't believe the changes I've seen in our postsecondary system .) Who is tracking the number of international students who are here 4 plus years and apply for PR after graduation? What is happening with the manipulation of statistics re: international students and/vs immigration? There is a significant statistical overlap that is not being disclosed to the Canadian public. I feel very safe in downtown Toronto because I am accustomed to it. I've never experienced any issue with the homeless and continue to talk to them, offer them food IFFFF they just happen to be pan-handling and often hug them to make them very SEEN. You ignored a major reason of the severe housing crisis. Chinese citizens buy up huge amounts of, specifically condos. And then they lay empty, because the condo is an investment, and if someone lives in it, they could damage it, lowering the value. These condos are then sold to other chinese citizens, each time they are sold the price goes up. When someone finally re-enters the market the asking price is far above the actual worth because the condo has been traded around to make sure everyone makes a profit. In BC, to try to fight there there is both an empty home tax and a foreign buyer tax. Meanwhile new high end condos continue to get built which are simply bought up by Chinese owners. I feel like this video is a perfect analogy for the differences between the two immigration systems. If you want to get rich, you take your chances on the US and its lottery system. But if you're more interested in quality of life (better education and healthcare systems), then Canada is the better choice. I hate this so much. I know it’s not these peoples fault that their countries aren’t helping them but America isn’t even helping its own people. Imagine how it feels to be from the US struggling and then these people come and somehow our country has the means to help them when they won’t not can’t won’t help their own. I am a Canadian and lived in the US from 1980-1992. I was a teenager and I enjoyed all the places I lived there. Mass shootings were not yet common though we did have a disgruntled employee with a gun on campus during my time in college. No one was actually shot.(This was in a very small town.) I did not get sick in the US. I have lived in Canada since then and enjoy it here too. I enjoy not having poisonous animals in the area where I live. I don't like the winters, and every winter I wish we could re-draw the border and make it go north and south! I have used the medical system up here and have been very thankful for it. The past couple of years with covid I have been especially glad to be in Canada because I preferred our response to the situation over that of the US. Most of the people in my workplace were not happy about it though and I believe 2 or 3 families actually moved to the US once the border re-opened. They like the feeling of having less governmental control in the US.
