i’m typing this as an american native with 1st generation mexican parents. i lived all my life in suburbs , i’m 23. i started doing online school at around age 13 so i stayed home and basically quit hanging out with anyone by age 14. i feel i grew up online, no real life friends, didn’t get to know or hangout with cousins my age due to their own plans or schedule. i still live a very lonely life but this video very greatly shows why i want to leave the US. neighbors hardly know each other and don’t want to, they instead will purchase guns and be paranoid about everyone, despite all they do is drive to work, do 10 hours, come back. repeat. \n\ni visited mexico twice, i like the culture there, and i wouldn’t mind trying to live out there for a year see how i like it. there’s plenty of good land to work, i’m willing to work hard and i’m ok with eating simple. as of now i’m just saving my money and getting it into investment and hopefully semi live off that when i move to mexico in 7-10 years

Not sure how I came upon this video but I'm American that's lived here all my life. It's so incredibly lonely, even as an American. I wish I could find people that want to have friendships and community. People like me are out there looking for friends and would gladly welcome immigrants!

I disagree with your analysis, I'm Asian American and most of my friends are all different colors and races. Allot of us have a very active lifestyle, if your an indoor type of person then you will obviously prefer staying indoors. I think why most people want to immigrate to a America is economical and social freedoms. I'm sure it might be very exciting in Africa, but Its chaotic, lawless and economically depressed. But if that's what you rather have than I suggest you stay where you came from.

I'm American, and left the U.S. over 20 years ago and moved to southeast Asia where I'm much happier. Most Americans don't even know their neighbors, are slaves to a job they hate, and are brainwashed to worship money as the most important thing in life, by far. Add to that a massively corrupt political system and a propaganda media that constantly spews lies to the public - it's just an insane way to live.

As an American over 50, I remember being able to play out in the street when I was a kid, but because of the rising crime and evil in this country, everyone fears going out of their house. I always wonder why foreigners want to come to the US. It’s horrible here. A lot of Americans are looking to leave their home country. If you want a house and good money, you will be an underpaid slave to your job, and you will have to keep working harder and harder just to maintain what you have. I live completely alone now. No friends and no family. So, I keep dreaming of escaping this hellhole they call the American dream. They can have it, cause I’m done.

I’m sad to see Manitoba here spoken of so sadly. I love living here. Yes there are mosquitos in the summer, and extreme weather. The home values make the province very very livable. Those working in trades make more and spend less than those in many provinces (and states). Winnipeg has a great art scene, lots of sports, etc. yes, we do have a high homeless & jobless rate. We also have a very high Native American rate, which has its own historical struggles.

I’m an American, so that last joke has a sort of inverted effect on me. Every time I think I’ve an American celebrity who’s genuinely pleasant, not egregiously problematic, and only controversial in the best ways, guess where they turn out to be from?

It’s funny how young Americans currently wouldn’t allow anything bad to be said about Canada. Young Americans believe Canada is what America should be and that it is a perfect country. I always thought it funny how Canada built all their major cities along the Border, they literally piggyback off America. I’m from AZ, I’ve watched immigrants come up and get jobs and start businesses without even being able to speak English.

Hi Anna, do you know any agencies that specialize in chemical engineering or oil and gas? I'm moving to Calgary as a permanent resident and it'll be great to have a job lined up beforehand. I have a masters degree in chemical engineering from an American university but I've found it difficult to get any interviews and most postings mention PEng as a requirement or expect me to be registered in Alberta. Any help is highly appreciated ?

If you think Canada is hard, then US life is X10 times hard. I'm a middle-class American and you need to be rich if you wanna enjoy your life here (If you are rich, then can live anywhere happily). Wow, I had to look up the thing about seal hunting cause I'm pretty sure we criticize the Japanese for that and whale hunting. Stuff Americans do or have that is totally different from Canadians. \n1. Americans put their macaroni & cheese in the oven, Canadians just cook it over the stove in a pot and stir in the seasoning after \n2. Americans have to pay a whole lot of money for their medications, in Canada it's mostly covered \n3. Americans talk with a weird slang dependin on which part their from, in Canada its plain english or french. (but nothing like the UK english at all) \n4. Americans don't make their poutine fries properly, in Canada its done the finest \n5. Americans have access to some of the best shopping malls in the world, Canada has to basically get everything shipped from there at extra cost.\n6. Americans well a good majority of the states can open carry firearms, in Canada that is completely illegal (but you could have a hunting rifle or crossbow if the RCMP license you to)\n7. Americans federal system is the FEDS and the ATF (correct me if i'm wrong), in Canada its the RCMP. (an NO they do not ride horses everywhere.)\n8. Americans have a much warmer weather all year around, in Canada its freezing most of the year and only get 3 ~ 4 months of warm weather.\n9. Americans well mostly in New York they have awesome chopped cheese sandwiches and cheesesteaks, in Canada you could never find that at Subway.\n10. Americans have Target, Chik-Fil-A, and Walgreens, in Canada we have Tim Hortons, Mary Browns, and Shoppers Drug Mart.

I’d love to visit Atlantic Canada: all my friends here on the West Coast say it’s very nice. \nI loved living in Quebec and Montreal, but both cities are very cold in winter—and I don’t speak no french too good, hoste! \nI’m from Ontario. it probably was a beautiful place until white people got there. But it’s way too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. Most of my family has moved out to the West Coast. I guess they missed me.\nManitoba is very nice, but you’re right about cold winters and lots of mosquitoes in summer. Winnipeg is a fantastic city. The biggest city on the North American Plains.\nSouthwest Saskatchewan is absolutely beautiful. Nuff said.\nAlberta is one of my favourite provinces—just too bad about the goofy government they got there. I lived and worked there lots over the years. Many Albertans have moved out here to the West Coast to get away from the horrid politics there.\nBC is by far the best place to live. I live in the steep rain shadow of East Vancouver Island, nice and warm, short if any winter. All my friends live here. I used to live in Victoria—we might move back there—it’s my favourite city anywhere. Vancouver is a blast—but too big for me. I wouldn’t live anywhere else in this country but BC. \nFriends tell me Yukon is great but NWT’s Yellowknife is a hell-hole. I read a great online zine from Nunavut—Nunatsiaq. As close as I’m ever gonna get.\nSo you’re ranking is not very good from my perspective. Alberta sucks because of its dependence on bitumen—and it’s not “cyclical”, it’s doomed. Oh yes, the snow birds coming to Hemet,ca. Let me explain to you the Canadians in that group would get drink, poison cats, they turned the American flag upside down on the flag pole. I only met one Canadian I liked and she told me, I'm not like them.

Life is excellent in Toronto and southern Ontario so I'm not going anywhere. If I were forced to move, I'd pick Ottawa or Kingston (both also in Ontario, of course). Out of province, my first choice would be Halifax for sure (all of Nova Scotia is pretty special) and probably St. John or Charlottetown next. On the west coast, Victoria just edges out Vancouver in my books. A little surprised that Quebec is first in your ranking but I do love visiting there. Alberta is gorgeous but culturally it's vibe is more American than Canadian. Anyone else find that?

Canada is what you make of it. You can arrive rich and end up poor and you can arrive poor and end up rich. In between that, you can have a great life that balances your needs. I’ve seen immigrants succeed simply because they see the opportunity in front of them . They worked hard in their own counties to stay just above the poverty line ,but when they apply that same effort here it pays off ten times greater. I feel that compared to a lot of immigrants, natural born Canadians come across as spoiled and a little lazy…we are. We haven’t had to struggle the same way someone from a poorer country might have. I’ve talked to people who’ve worked ten to twelve hours a day just to stay afloat. If you did that here you could make plenty of money to live and have some left over. As far as owning a house goes,yes it’s expensive . I feel that homeownership in any country is relatively expensive. Here is a tip; use that soaring home prices to your advantage. Houses are expensive but you can make a lot of money buying and selling. I recommend putting together a buyers group and share the house for a few years, then sell at a profit, buy a bigger house or two smaller houses.try to buy the worst house in the best neighbourhood and fix it up slowly . That house could double in value in five or six years in the Toronto market. This is nothing new of course ,the people from India and China seem to do this a lot here ,it drives up prices and profits. On the downside to this ,you are now part of the problem. As the housing prices are driven up the non wealthy can no longer afford to own a house . They are at the mercy of high rents with no rewards of ownership. They are caught in a cycle of hard work and (relative)poverty. This could also be you if you can’t keep up the house payments and are forced to rent.\nHow well you speak English is important but your native language is also useful here because Canada is half immigrants . As a Canadian that speaks only english (Irish descent)I have to say to all newcomers that I’m very impressed that you have learned a new language and that you may even speak more than two! Don’t be embarrassed about your abilities . I find that in my experience , Canadians do not look down on people just because they don’t know English. In fact ,I’ve known people that have lived here for decades and still know very little English. They are comfortable in their communities and they function just fine. Learn as much English as suits your needs and be proud of any gains you make.\nOutside of Toronto are other cities that you might consider when looking at southern Ontario.From my experience,most are generally the same, just not as big . There are large immigrant communities in London Ontario, Hamilton and just outside of Toronto where housing is just a little bit less expensive but the commute to work is probably longer. This is just my opinion but in the small towns there are less people of colour , (which is what people of no colour call everyone else . I wonder if I’m called a person of no colour in some other culture ? LoL ). That might make it harder for you to feel integrated ,if that’s what you want. I’m not saying that people from other cultures can’t make it in a small town , I’m just saying that it’s definitely not Toronto . Here, people of any nationality can feel like they have a place where they can belong . It seems that no matter where you are from ,there is a community already here that’s set up restaurants and stores and clothing shops and newcomer support systems. And if your from Portugal or China or India or Africa or the Middle East, there are large groups of your kin here that have established roots for generations and you probably know this already.\nToronto means meeting place and that becomes evident quickly. I was born here and it’s one of the things I love the most about my city. I’m not going to say that there isn’t systemic racism here ,the people of no colour still kind of keep the top position , but as we become a minority in a decade or so ,I hope that will shift to a broader spectrum. It’s certainly happening already. One good thing is that the police department tries to hire people of colour so that racialism may play a smaller role. We’re getting used to seeing our politicians more and more reflect their constituents.\nI have to talk about the weather. Because I’m from here I’m used to the extremes of minus thirty and plus thirty . Eventually you get used to it (somewhat). Dressing in the right clothes is important. Summer is easy , but winter is different. It’s trying to kill you. Spend the most that you can afford on winter cloths . If you can afford a quality parka you should get one. The hood can be drawn around the face and stay out of the wind.\nIf not ,think of layers with a outer layer that blocks the wind. We have things called long Johns that are basically full length thick cotton or nylon pants that go on under your pants and a pair of extra thick socks. Buy your boots to fit your thick socks. Try to get the best boots you can afford ,it’s something that you might spend a little extra for but never regret.\nAll in all we are a fairly organized and peaceful society. Most people are friendly and will give you a chance . We have a good social safety net here and you don’t have to be homeless or starving if you don’t want to. There are people and organizations set up to help ,that truly try to get people back on their feet. It’s a good investment that pays off in ways that matter for the quality of life in a big city. I’m not putting my American neighbours down when I say they do things differently. They have their ways ,we have ours. This is just something that we do because we’re trying to learn how to help those that society has discarded or can’t find their place. Sure we have one or two areas where the homeless have pitched tents and we have some resources for them if they want. Unfortunately The mayor recently forced a small camp to move from a very visible place to more scattered locations. There were social workers involved as well as protesters trying to protect them. I didn’t like that happening and I want to see even more resources dedicated to them ,but on the other hand ,we are trying to avoid something like what happens on the streets when it’s just ignored. When I see YouTube videos of the streets of Philadelphia I’m extremely saddened. I thank the lucky stars that I was born in Toronto Canada.\nFor all it’s pollution and expense and crowds ,I think it’s a great place to do almost anything your heart desires . For every ugly building there is a beautiful park ,for every honked horn there is a birds call , for every cold and dark day there is beautiful sunny one around the corner.

I'm Asian from Republic of Korea. I liked USA but since a few days I'm really hating that country because of racism against Asians, Black people, people who are different religious. I've not seen other countries being this racist as America. I'm not saying that everyone from USA is racist but sadly i'm sure majority of them are! American people think that every Asian is Chinese and they call us Virus, they tell us to go back to our country if an Asian visits. For those wondering: the USA does not have any official language, but of people who speak only one language here, most speak English. Is there a lot of Mexicans in Canada? I'm American but my family was born in Mexico

You’ve been in an English speaking country for awhile. So why do you need to communicate via Spanish? You should’ve learned the language by now. That’s the biggest thing, if you want to be a American or Canadian then learn the language. \n\nI’m Latin and my father n uncles hated going places in the US and another Latin would speak Spanish to them. Even though they could speak Spanish they said this is America speak English. \n\nNot all minorities like seeing people coming into the country illegally or by trying to use asylum when they have no claim. If it’s hard in your country don’t have kids, try to immigrate legally to a country!

I’m a dual citizen of US and Canada. For me a big cultural difference is that Americans are raised thinking they’re the greatest country in the world and Canadians take pride in being peacekeepers and our multicultural mosaic (rather than melting pot).
