I married my spouse and moved to the United States from Canada. Before, I didn't give the US much thought and merely loved travelling to a few of the locations. Having said that, even after spending five years there, I have never witnessed a country and a population as divided as the US. You proudly display your flag, yet you're so racist, illiterate, and a bible-thumper that it disgusts me. The United States is not the most free country in the world, despite what the public believes and thinks. In reality, it is also depressing to observe how the healthcare system handles people. The social safety net is completely missing, and by that I mean that most jobs don't pay for maternity leaves or vacations unless you work at a senior level or for a high-end company. The political system is so rigged that it is understandable why people are tired of voting every two years, and perhaps even every year. Most certainly, especially since your elections begin almost exactly when the previous one finished. I suppose I could go on forever, but I'll stop here. Although Canada is not perfect, is not free from controversy or problems, and is not the best at everything, we are able to concede defeat, acknowledge that someone was wrong or that we might have done better, work together with one another, and express that we are SORRY. Yes, it is a word that is never used in the US, and that is also the issue. I'm pleased to be back in Canada, where I belong, and I regret ever leaving. Yes, returning to Canada feels peaceful and inviting compared to travelling to the US, where every trip involves an interrogation to ensure that you don't remain too long. There is no need to worry because I won't be returning to stay, only visit, as previously.

We talk about moving back to the US, but the medical coverage stops us dead. Haven't seen a health care bill in 19 years, since moving to Canada. Its freer in Canada. \n\nIt's freer in the sense that our basic needs are seen too. We pay high taxes in Canada to have a social umbrella, that is not available in the States. I lived in MA and worked in human services and in the education system. They have to fight for every nickel every year. The tension in these environments is high. Lots of fund raising, lots of volunteer duties, low pay. Not that way in Canada.

Citizens of this country will be paying higher taxes and it's not going to take care of roads, bridges, electric grids. This stuff needs to stop. Pricing is not a Canadian specific problem. Look at anywhere people actually want to live in the US, it's essentially the same. LA and NY are just as expensive as Toronto. Only difference is there's less people in Canada that live in rural states like Iowa where everything is cheap because there isn't major city for hundreds of thousands of miles. This is all part of late stage capitalism and our inability to see past the short term. Corporations eventually take over if we don't do anything about it and everything becomes too expensive. People stop having kids so the government needs to increase immigration to support what few social systems we have left. As the child of immigrants, i think this is a perspective a lot of Canadians are facing. I could never bring myself to leave, most people my age are the same. All your friends are here, the neighbourhood you grew up in is here and you're simply not cut out to go to where your parents originally came from (half of us come from parents/grand parents who immigrated) because the climate is probably 1000x different lol (I just know I couldnt survive South Asian/Middle eastern weather).\n\nI just turned 18 though so I haven't experienced the insane rent and stuff (as it's literally impossible for me to move out). Things will be better I know it, but the question is how long will that take? Id personally give it 5 or 6 years. We need to put a cap on immigration and just completely cut off the GTA from receiving any for a set amount of time (think 2 or 3 years?). We also need to amplify our construction industry (incentives/rezone some areas for development) and the government should start subsidizing urban development projects with an agreement that prices will be lowered, or offer money to people who are purchasing condos/houses (think iZev but for urban housing and not electric vehicles). \n\nAlso stop taxing us and simply start slowing down/cutting non-essential social services; a specific government program should be created that closes all of these at once for a set amount of time (think 2 or 3 years as well) and they'll be able to redirect the money to more important causes.

I just got back from a visit to Toronto. I was visiting a friend who lives in a subsidised housing complex whose management NPO just declared bankruptcy. He was given a notice telling him that he will alright until the end of the month. After that he has no idea what will happen. He expects some sort of political intervention but the end of the month is still less than 10 days away.\n\nFrom my point of view all levels of government must act immediately: restrict rent increases and stop the post-covid price gouging; reduce regulations that limit the amount of infill housing, and density in existing neighbourhoods (allow the construction of missing middle housing and eliminate parking minimum regulations); and start building public housing again. \n\nWe cannot rely on corporations or private interests to fulfil basic human needs. What we are seeing now in the Toronto region, the Vancouver region, and Calgary is a crisis created by government neglect and corporate greed. The situation requires a massive emergency response at all levels of government.

So how are these asylum seekers come? Do they come from the country that they are looking for asylum and they are denied shelter? Then the trouble is how this claimants are processed, there should be a way to firm up the needed resources or simply there's no room in Canada. If what they are doing is coming to the country and once at the port of entry they claim for asylum we need to take a serious look at how lenient we are in accepting just anyone who comes by automatically granting asylum. Indians need to stop coming to Canada, there are better opportunities in India for the next 50 years. Canadas debt to gdp is 4 times that of Indias . The only reason the country is afloat is because the bond market thinks Canadas debt is better than a country like India. Both have never defaulted on debt obligations but one is closer to doing so than the other.
