Although this is heartbreaking for the vulnerable, there seems to be missing information and not enough investigation from CBC.

thank you Fifth Estate for uncovering and covering this story. This is a great shame on Canada and as a Canadian this must stop. I hope this stays front and centre in the news and these students are cared for and respected as human beings and not cash grabs. Shame on these crooks in Canada!! I would appreciate an update on how these students are doing. It is heartbreaking.

Heartbreaking . Canada was once the land of opportunity for refugee's and immigrants from all lands . Sikhs and Punjabi have been proud Canadians since the early 19'th century . Labor contractors are lacking control and monitoring and law enforcements. I would never have dreamed Canada would exploit anyone .

Africans being forced into slavery by their own people is greedy and heartbreaking and that cruelty is exactly what we have today. The cruelty of some blacks is outrageous, ask any elderly man or woman who was punched in the face by one of these cruel ones. What I don't dig is how every black person with a mediocre platform MUST talk about something black. In one way it was a blessing when blacks were brought to the states. In Africa many blacks had to suffer through famine and had to eat insects, there have been many cases of genocide, slave trade and HIV. After the Republicans died freeing the slaves, blacks were afforded a whole new life. It hasn't been easy but for blacks, life before BLM was encouraging blacks to attend college and get great jobs and the people in these companies accepted and even made friends with them. These motivated blacks were a minority though and the reality is that many backs wasted their life wanting to be rap stars and gangsters...the latter has increased this stupidity a hundred fold since BLM. Stop talking about blacks, how you perceive they are being treated, slavery, reparations and what ever else you have up your sleeve and start focusing on the very youth who will be on this planet when we are are old and helpless..

As an African American it was heartbreaking seeing Leeland going through all this especially when he went to the Super-mart bug pharmacy store or whatever it's called. It's grows from you being calm, to paranoid, then full on anxiety knowing that you are being followed or watched. Then there's an underlying feeling of anger and you keep telling yourself to relax because you haven't done any thing wrong. I've experienced this many times b4 especially when I was younger or go into a store with my younger sister who is 17, I am 27. There's solidarity in knowing someone else experiences this as well and understands how you feel, but it's sad as well because no one should experience this.

This is so heartbreaking but I’m glad that they made a video about this because racism is swept under the rug and were told to “tolerate it” and it’s so wrong!

that last bit was heartbreaking. jeeze there are some ignorant bastards in this comment section. i get that ignorant people are trying to make complicated situations simplified in their minds but these are human beings. you have no idea what they're going through and you're a bunch of hypocrites when it comes to your own family's history of immigration

Legal to be here or not, I've got a heart man, and this sucks.. I know there's got to be more good than bad in this world, but where's the love y'all?? I've never walked a day in their shoes, they didn't ask for the things that are happening to them and their families in the native countries. They were born into it. I know this is a dog eat dog world, but how none of you hsve or even show compassion is just a heartbreaking.. We are turning into a bunch of entitled twats in America, we don't deserve any better life than anyone else just bc we were born here where we have at least some safety and security...

IT SHOULD BE LIKE THAT IN THE UNITED STATES. YOU JUST CAN'T COME IN ILLEGALLY AND STAY THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. ALWAYS DO IT THE LEGAL WAY. ITS HEARTBREAKING BUT COUNTRIES HAVE LAWS.

It's a heartbreaking situation, but a country has the right to decide who comes in and who doesn't. The places where hard-working, industrious people like Jose come from need to drastically change their societies to capitalize on his talents and provide for a stable future for his children. Perhaps what the US and Canada can do is help train those country's leaders to implement policies that improve their economies like establishing strong property rights, rule of law, free markets, tough measures on crime, etc. But unless you have a Ph.D. in Physics or will start the next Apple computers, we have plenty of unskilled labor here already. Look, I feel for the guy and I'm empathetic to his plight, I don't think he's an evil person, and our country may be better off having him here working and contributiing to the labor pool, but the law is the law.
