I have been living in Toronto for more than 2 year now and in addition to their contribution to India, I have huge respect for the Punjabi/ Sikh community in Canada. Despite whatever derogatory comments the locals might have, reality is they are honest and extremely hardworking people. The seva offered to everyone at various Gurudwaras is just so emotionally overwhelming. Unfortunately, there is one section- mostly the international students who have recently arrived seem to be influenced by Punjabi pop music and try to emulate which looks absolutely cringe and stupid. The situation now is their stupidity gets recorded and posted on social media which has resulted in local stereotyping the entire Punjabi/ Sikh population as destructive immigration.

And these were the kind of sikhs who never considered themselves as indians and ultimately most of them afrer 1947 upraised a movement called khalistan. That's what i've been saying, we need economic reform. Whenever i've raised my concerns for the punjab's issue, i've been called anti national, terrorists by the Indians. It’s is not a weapon it’s a kirpan. A kirpan is one of the five symbols of Sikhism and is a reminder to Sikhs to fight injustice and oppression, but is not to be used as an instrument of violence. So stop calling it a weapon it’s very disrespectful to call any religious symbols weapons.

Sikhs are our valued citizens, no one persecutes them. Unfortunately for punjabis going to foreign countries is a hobby and they make excuses to not get deported.

Some Sikhs are very nice this one time I went to a river and there was a 8 year old girl in the middle of the river and a Punjabi man came and took his turban off to make a rope for her to rescue her.

While I respect the Sikh tradition and culture, if you are in another country, you abide by the rule and laws of that country. If you want to practice and uphold your tradition ABOVE the law of the country you reside in, that I ask you think twice. If you want to flaunt your tradition and culture and feel that such is above the law, you can do so back at the home nation for Sikh culture and tradition and no one will contest it. But as long as you are in America and you are an American, you OBEY the law.

No need to carry knives anymore in this century especially in public spaces . I've lived 6 years in delhi, india and I've seen how Sikhs are one of the most rude people from india and they are always ready to threaten you with the knife. I've seen it dozen times from my own eyes

Visiting family in Brooklyn when i live in the UK was a major shock to me, to see how segregated the neighbourhoods were was like going back 50 years in time. I'm light skin black and had people looking at me funny on Flatbush, i got back to my relo's and asked wag1, they tell me id be perceived as a Latino... I fully understand both sides. On one side a guy who practices SIKH religion in which he carries a knife (or resembles a knife) as a sacred item/object as part of his religious beliefs. On the other side you have a cop who doesn't know about it or why he has it so as his job is to protect others he has to investigate.
