Hi Lynn, this is a very interesting conversation. I moved to Canada in 2003 went to college and became a nurse. First of all it was not easy paying for college I was lucky that husband was supporting with the bills as I went to school. So I would say that I have skills that are very marketable. Our combined family income was over $100,000 CAN. We mortgaged our first home which was very basic for a LOT of money. We had our kids and we had to struggle with childcare as most young families do. By North American standard, we were doing good. We each had a good car ( loaned), we made trips to Kenya every so often but in 2016 we decided we wanted to move back home and we sold our home and we did. I HAVE NO REGRETS. There were several things that made us reach our decision. First, I truly believe that for the Canadian system to work as it does, it has to entrap its residents. Even after 10 years of work we did not have money in the bank. Everything we owned really belonged to the bank. The light bulb moment for me came when I evaluated my net worth. A primary school teacher in Kenya after 10 years of work with good financial management will own a plot, a simple house and will start to invest for retirement. After 10 years of work, there wasn't much in the account, our house would need 25 years to finish paying mortgage and to be honest there wasn't much to show for those years of work. Quality of life really sucks the amount of stress will definitely send you to the grave sooner. This is the case for most first generation immigrants. You might say you are sacrificing and building a future for your children but, my observation was since our diaspora children have not grown in Kenya to see the need for money and what life really looks like without the comforts they are used to, they do not have the same drive as the parents so they often do not excel they are just ordinary. There is also the struggle of growing up as a minority group. A lot of our children because they are seeking acceptance will struggle with self esteem, will have depression or will join the LGBTQ community where they get sense of belonging regardless of their colour. The morals are also different from their parents and they are shaped by the society they grow up in. When I looked at what my life would look like if we kept living there, lets say we eventually pay off our mortgage, when we are old and requiring care, our children will not be able to support themselves and support us because they have to work to sustain themselves so we would to move to assisted living or nursing homes. The cost of senior care is not covered by the government unless you have no money. so we have to sell out home which would be old and outdated but still very expensive and we would have to pay $5000-$10000 per month depending on the type of care we need. so as you can see if we ended in a nursing home for 5 years we will have depleted all the money we made from the sale of our home. So by the time we die, we would not have money to leave for our children. So we worked really hard, supported the economy, and die leaving not much at all for our children, we sacrificed our quality of life, and ended up with children who don't think much of themselves or have very distorted morals. I still remember in my mind as we drove to the airport on our way back to Kenya, I thought of the story of Lot. He was pretty successful in Sodom but I'm very sure on his death bed he had lots of regrets why he ever went there. I know its tough being in Kenya but if you have a job or any way to make ends meet, be like Abraham. God will bless you regardless of whether you are in the dessert.

As a somewhat successful tech person who came from nothing, I refuse to move out of a city to a culturally or globally lacking city due to “budget”. I tried spending time in BC and Nova Scotia in the capital cities. I could not spend more than a week in Saskatchewan. I can assure you that someone with decent skills and lifestyle would not be able to sustain their social and personal life, and mental health anywhere in Canada other than Toronto. If I spoke decent French, I’d say Montreal is a decent option. Vancouver is too lopsided as an international real estate haven, even though beautiful. So the problem is that Toronto is honestly the only city someone like me (and most my friends) would consider living in Canada, and we are all unfortunately being forced to move to the US. We are in our very early 30s so it’s still not too late to have a big move but none of us wanted to try out NYC or SFO much later than now. I hope things improve and we are able to move back to Toronto. But right now, unless you make $300k+, it’s impossible. And we are only able to make that money in the US (most of us). As an international student who works at 3 jobs almost 7 days a week to pay my college and rent… I can only afford a small room with a sharing washroom with 4 others. Life here so difficult and it’s very exhausting. Canada should stop advertising itself as a country of opportunities and easier life. It’s much harder than back home if we talking honestly. \nDon’t get me wrong I love a lot of things about this beautiful country, but life is way too short to work at 3 jobs to pay rent and fees until I die. ?

To Everyone bad mouthing Toronto I got a few thoughts to share. First off I’ve lived in Edmonton all my life. But growing up there were two constants in my life almost every summer. 2 places where I could get away have fun not come back for weeks or even months on end. One of them was Toronto . That trend has continued into my 40s.\nSecond I don’t consider Edmonton home. I consider Toronto and my other favourite place my homes always have always will.\nThird Toronto like Every other city has bad and great things about it. But the great things far outweigh the bad things. Yes Toronto is big. But it’s also beautiful vibrant majestic lovely a sight to behold once you visited it long enough. You got the blue jays you got the cn tower you got a lot of stuff no other city has. Toronto is my dream city. It’s where dreams can actually turn into big dreams That result in major success. Toronto is for me. I love it I always will and to be honest it’s way better than Edmonton.❤️❤️❤️????.

I am a resident of Toronto for the past 11 years now. I moved here from Calgary because back then I had a better opportunity. I was an aspiring pastry chef. I landed in pretty stable and well paid job. I've already noticed the changes in city a few years before the pandemic. The drug addiction and mental health problem were already quite evident as injection sites were popping up around the cities including public parks. Then the pademic happened, it exposes the cracks in our society, some people are becoming selfish and intolerant. I lost my job due to the pandemic, it was very traumatic, I developed severe anxiety/depression. Luckily, i had some savings when it all happened. Fastforward, I've been working in the last 2 years now but I can no longer find the same job and pay I used to have. Most companies are now more ruthless. They let go employees any minute as soon as they felt the business is slow. There's no more job security. The only reason why I am surviving is because I am living in the same apartment since i moved here. However, my new neighbours who just moved in are paying twice as much. I've been attempting to leave the city but that would mean that i would be paying at least twice of my current rent and there aren't much opportunities elesewhere. I honestly felt trapped in my current situation but I am still grateful that I am still better off than many people who are already living on the edge. Sadly, the situation is only getting worst according to many analysts. I think the country is at a breaking point in many aspects.

I'm living in USA and honestly want to go back India very badly. India is highly affordable I realized after coming USA. I realized now infrastructure gap is extremely low. Now India is having great infrastructure great job business opportunities hence I think to go back.

Enrollment forms and payment of full fees. The officer said he did not believe her so he seized her passport and told her that she must come back on Sunday to show proof of full payment of fees and also enrolled in the semester. Which she does not have honestly. Please what is your advice, on this? Can she go and claim asylum?

This is profoundly unfair review and comparison. How many in Nigeria receiving $1000/month salary? When did “time is money” became unacceptable? Maybe that’s one of the reasons the country not prospering because many are lazy and don’t perform their job? Where in this world the system pays you more money than you can handle? Why not give a specific example of that “systemic discrimination/racism”. Why is wanting to know your performance at work discriminatory? Why not be honest that there’s different approach to healthcare professionals in Canada? My question is why he’s not going back to Nigeria? People that are doing VERY WELL in Nigeria don’t ever think of leaving the country. They send their kids to study abroad and pay huge for that. We’ve been in Canada for over 10yrs now and no regrets.

My family and I got permanent residency in Canada back in 2016 and it is true it is not worth it. My spouse and I hold PhDs in Health Services Management and Biomedical Research and were educated and trained in the UK. I was serving as a professor of Biology in my country at that time but Canada wanted me to start over at the bottom as well as my husband despite our proven track record of experience and credentials from accredited British universities. We opted to stay in our home country and today we are far better off and more accomplished at home than we would have been in Canada. The skilled migrant worker program offered by Canada is really for young persons under 30 without families, straight out of unoversity and who are not senior or established in their career. Most notably, we are minorities and felt that we were discriminated against when trying to acquire housing in a surbuban community in Canada and the same was experienced when registering our children for school. Honestly, we did not feel welcomed at all and opted to return home after 8 days in Canada.

I've been a caregiver for over 40 years and I just love it, but recently, I've been seeing a few people, including the HR Department and the people who hired me, try to surprise me bye popping up and the client was very upset because they didn't want to listen to her and a employee that was working with me,I wasn't aware of the problem situation that was going on, so basically I was set up with them saying that I wasn't taking care of the client honestly the client told them I've been helping them the most the employee said that I wasn't changing the client,,and I noticed that the trash Bin was being opened and I bought it attention to the client and she said be careful with the company and the co-worker that is working with us is lying on. Me and I brought it up to my supervisor and then she said that someone had said that I wasn't changing her underwear and she the client said that she would let the boss know but she came back from told me that I wasn't able to continue to work for them and I asked them why they said someone was coming from Africa to join their company and I Said that I'm not going to signing anything that is a lie ...

I wish Canada did more R&D. We have the talent and brains to be innovative, yet so many of us go work in the oil & natural gas sector because it pays handsomely.\nAlso to live in the most scenic provinces like BC and Ontario is crazy expensive. We moved from AB to BC in 2009 which my parents bought their house for $550,000 that's situated 40km East of Vancouver, and today their house is valued at 1.4 million... almost 3 times the original purchase price in just over a decade. Now an adult, my wife and I were forced to move back to Alberta and leave our families because we simply cannot afford to rent there nor ever have an honest shot at saving enough money to buy our own place. It is what it is and I'm sure it's a common theme that's not only exclusive to Canada, but man, it does sucks. I'm happy for any immigrants to move here and call Canada their home too, but many are loaded with money and purchase numerous properties just to then rent it out at an absurd rate because they can. While Norway, Arab countries and even US are ramping oil and gas production, in Canada Trudeau is concerned more about increasing carbon tax and the rainbow flags. Honestly I'm very disappointed in this country, it's becoming worse and worse here. Prices are through the roof, housing is insanely expensive, even car prices are higher than in USA. Many people have to maintain 2 or even 3 jobs just to survive. And if you are a recent graduate or an immigrant professional, good luck finding a good job. You probably will end up in a minimum wage job that barely allows you to rent a room in someone's basement, pay for your most expensive in the world cell phone plan, expensive cars.... and wait 6 months to go see a medical specialist. If you're thinking of immigrating to Canada, better consider Europe, USA or developed countries in Asia. I was lucky because I bought property back in 2016. My best friend started her immigration process in 2017. She was finally green lit to come to America in 2019 after marrying her long time husband over in Europe and then getting the paperwork done here in the US during that time Covid hit, and when they closed all the borders, they stopped all of the immigration process to America meaning that she was stuck in Europe away from her husband for three years. Finally last year after making her go back through the process getting all of her paperwork re-done, paying another $5000 she was able to come to the US just last month she got the start of her paperwork for her green card to work here in the US and become a full US citizen. It’s been a long process. It infuriates me that people like that who are honest, hard-working people who want to come to the US and start a life after being married, proven to have jobs and want to pay taxes and support a system. That’s willing to take them in get held up because of people like this want to come here illegally Big cause of whatever the reasons are trying to circumvent and skip over the people who are trying their hardest to do it the right way in the first place, dust dragging the system further down.

I’m Lebanese , i applied for work permit 1.5 year ago, got approved a month ago and got my visa 2 weeks ago( for Edmonton, Alberta). My hourly wage is 16.46$ before tax. I’ve calculated my cost of living ( rent, food, transportation, etc.. ) It was acceptable back then . When i applied earlier , it was my dream to come to canada. I’ve struggled a lot to get the visa and I’ve booked a flight that was supposed to be next week , but honestly things have differ from when I’ve applied. I used to see affordable housing and cost of living, not anymore. Things have changed there, from cost to living to rents to increased crime rate ( it’s even higher and more tragical than Lebanon itself in his worst current situation) and so on and so forth. I’ve literally canceled everything and I’m not even regretting my decision.\n\nWorking on a slight above minimum wage, in a weather that’s -20+ for long months just to be in ‘CANADA’ and live from paycheck to paycheck isn’t going to seduce me honestly.

I really enjoyed living here in Australia.im a registered nurse here in Australia and honestly im earning more money than my friends who are nurses as well in Canada. I managed to buy land and build brand new beautiful house in a sub urb in Victoria in just 500K AUD. many people are leaving Canada now. here are keys where Australia outperforms Canada; salary, benefits, weather, health care, military and we have superannuation here in Australia where the Goverment does save money for you. ticket prices from Aus to Philippines are significantly way more cheaper than Canada. I can go home to Philippines in just 300 AUD and it's a back and forth air trip. I got my PR here in Australia in just a year. I will never never ever leave Australia for Canada...

I am an American born in NY, raised in VA. I also lived in Van Nuys for a year, also lived in Texas before my job industry moved me to Canada. \ni have been in Canada for 7yrs, been to Vancouver, Toronto and MTL and to be honest i like a lot of things in Canada like the health care differences and of course the lower insulin cost for my husband but i still want to go back home. If anything i would stay in Toronto because it's the closest similarity to home but where Aba and Preach live, in Montreal, it's literally been my nightmare. I feel like the tap water at least in my area has gotten worse over time. \nOne thing i feel like they didn't mention that I have to tell people from America to watch out for is the credit card vs debit card thing. \nI grew up only having debit cards because i didn't want to get into debt. when i came to Canada i continued getting a debit card and realized the hard way that not everything accepts debit cards and you NEED to also have a credit card to access certain things.\nbut overall i do feel much safer in Canada even though the crazy trump lovers are showing up here and there it's significantly less than i see when I'm back home.

My wife, my 3 kids and I used to like Vancouver but not anymore!!! The weather is why we plan to leave for good but also the expensive rents! I also heard about horror stories at many hospitals (and yes, I have worked in Africa and to be honest, Africans hospitals are way more functional than the ones in Canada in terms of human aspect… there they care, Canadians do not give a shit about anyone!!! And I am saying this as a Belgian!!! I have some African colleagues at work here and at least 80 percent of them either want to go back to Africa (one is actually going to start an Afro business there and build his own house) or move to Europe (one of them plans to live to my homeland Belgium and two others in France as apparent the pensions there are way better than the Canadian one) as soon as they get enough experience in canada! None of us at work , including me, want to retire or get old here in Canada! Honestly, I don’t know how to describe and definite my experience. I came to Canada for my university education by the end of 2013 after I finished my high school in my hometown. That was my first time to go abroad, and living in a totally strange country all alone. New surroundings. New friends. New culture. English speaking. Everything is new for me, and I cannot figure out how I feel at that time, because it’s so complex. Both excited and afraid. In the next few years, I traveled among several different cities. Winnipeg. Vancouver. Toronto. I met many people and experienced lots of things. Some were good and warm, and some were not, and the worst thing was I found I cannot get used to my life in Canada. I don’t mean bad, but I still feel I’m an outsider. I cannot get in. Neither my life nor my schoolwork. So much loneliness. I left Canada and go back to my hometown by the August of 2017. There was nothing strange for me at first 2 years. Everything looks normal, but by the flying of time, I found myself cannot stop missing the old days and experience in Canada. Even the worst part looks so beautiful. I have no idea how could that happened.

One of my siblings ??is in USA ??and he tells us how lonely the place is and how people struggle with mental health and sometimes I just want to tell him if we could exchange places?but I choose to sympathise.this is because he is an extreme extrovert .Party after party kind of person, a person who moves with people ,on the other hand am an extreme introvert?this is the life I live here in kenya????.I can't wait to get back to my house u wish my neighbourhood was like this honestly❤.I reenergise indoors.And am in the process of going to the ?? .I just need one friend who will be my future husband and a doh and am happy.i don't mind having friends but am good with one.So see you on the other side????.

My step-sister lives in Whitehorse and claims to love it there, so much so that she barely comes back to Ontario. I guess it just depends on the person. As for me, after having lived overseas for a couple of years in the UK, I can honestly say that there's just no place like home. Canada, like any country, has its issues but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else permanently. :)

As a i have been living here for more than two years and i have always been struggling with employment issues, healthcare system, housing prices and many others , i cant really be honest to my parents, back home how hard living condition is here. even though if you spent many years of educations and gained experiences or got your master, its not gonna help you ever in canada. personally its too hard to start everything from the scratch its just waste of time. back to Asia.

I would be honest with you most of people who leave Canada can have a good life in their home countries (mainly people who say this are from Europe or advanced country in Asia ), well if in your home country you can't make a life at all then what's the point of going back and what I'm taling about here is mainly African countries where everything is expensive and scarce, us living in third country we can even make enough money for a cost of flight alone in a one year of work, wages here can come to be 50$ USD a month that's if your lucky (and not even to say that you will spend most of them on food and health care)

I'm been here in Calgary Alberta for almost 26 years to be honest I'm really sick and tired and bored of this place but we have no choice our home country isn't safe if it was safe I would have left long time ago Canada is beautfuil place to be but dont look at the beauty if your life is depressing here back home is the best way to go. if you have lots of money and enjoy it there since is cheaper people in canada work like dogs it's really upsetting

Lived my whole life practically in Ottawa ..not going to lie I hated it! I left 5 months ago to paterson jersey, than from there to Florida..and now I'm residing back home in Dominican. In October I will be headed back to Ottawa ..in all honestly I would much rather live in Naples Florida ! Govt of Canada is a joke ! Well..some of it !..\n\nAs a fighter and martial artist there was more opportunities in Florida and jersey..!

My aunt and uncle are trying to move back to Haiti. Google Haiti and our safety issues. Yet my uncle and aunt are trying to go back. Honestly that tells me all I need to know. Not bashing Canada in any way. But my uncle was a qualified engineer and my aunt a nurse. They're native french speakers, good English speakers. They went back to school and did everything right, passing all the exams, only to be offered part time employment and no career progression whatsoever. They got passed on for promotions and raises. They're happy they offered a better life to their children, but as they age, they're trying to go back home to Haiti.

I'm okay until I can make the dollars flow in, it's isn't easy anywhere to be honest, I started here 3 years ago as a student, graduated recently, and found a decent job, I will stay for the time being, but it's in my back of the head to go back someday not anytime soon though ?

Nobody in Canada looks like me anywhere. I was born there but it does not feel like my home. Seems like everybody is from somewhere else..china, india.. I am a foreigner when I travel, and a foreigner when I'm in Can where I was born. To be honest I'd rather be dead than go back to Canada

We have moved to Australia as a skilled class immigrants back in 2012 and cherished this decision such an honest society we have learned alot from this country specially basic human rights
