Many people seem shocked that the US is acting this way towards its “closest ally.” Let’s not forget that in the days and weeks following 9/11, when a town like Gander, Newfoundland took in thousands of Americans when airplanes were grounded, the US was initially blaming Canada for its lax border and immigration laws in allowing terrorists into the US. They even suggested a number of the Al-Qaeda terrorists in those airplanes had entered from Canada! ? We seem to be an easy target for our ‘close’ friends sought of the border.

We will take your products, join the EU and have free access to our markets at a discount. Welcome Canada, thank you for saving us in WW2, welcome to the EU, we are alike in mentallity, manners, worldviews and strategic interests. Prime Minister Trudeau is boldly hitting the nails on the head, and I admire his boldness and honesty as I've always admired Canada and its peoples. Trump is in the back pocket of the Russian dictator. His actions prove it to my satisfaction. Canada has been a staunch friend of the US, a real partner not just for economic benefits for both countries but for a democratic way of life. I'm surprised how many Americans are upset with this move against Canada, from the left and right. I'm not letting Donald affect my friendships I have down in the States with friends and family.

While I have always been pressed by his superior leadership record and skills especially with his spectacular response to the impending tariffs by travelling to UK and Europe and talking about trading with Europe and East Asian countries.\nWhat a disappointment when he called Putin a murderous dictator. Justin, let’s look at the record of your friends in the West. USA has over decades bombed and killed millions of Muslims in Arab countries. Today the murders continue to go one without a peep from you or your western leader friends. In the last week the US has bypassed Congress to ship billions of dollars of bombs to Israel so Israel can with these US bombs cleanse Gaza. So Israel can steal the Palestinian lands so Trump can built a resort and hotels in these stolen Palestinian lands.\nSo what about Ukraine? Same story, different tactic. NATO with your consent poked the Russian bear for decades before Russia, whose warnings about NATO expansion went unheeded. Russia had no choice but to fight a proxy war with Ukraine as US kept on shipping dollars and weapons to Ukraine ‘to weaken Russia’. When you won the election, Justin, I thought that a younger Canadian whose father was one of the most independent thinking leader, that you would take a history lesson and realize that the US foreign policy over decades has been the cause for so much complicity in so many countries around the world. Trudeau is a WEF puppet. A tariff war between Canada and the U.S. is ridiculous to begin with, and it will certainly have negative consequences for the U.S., but much more so for Canada. Let's face it, the U.S. internal market is several times that of Canada. Many businesses in Canada exist only because of their trade with the U.S. The same is not true for the U.S. Trudeau can paint whatever picture he wants to Canadians, but the Trump administration is not made of fools and they are very much aware of the reasons they have for having enforced the tariffs.

North Carolinian American here. I am ashamed of our country pushing our allies away. What I and many others want to let our allies know is that we support them. Our country is getting closer to isolationism, and it isn't good if we want inflation and prices to go down. History has shown us what happened to our country when we were isolated, and it brought economic devastation throughout the country. I hope that it isn't severe, but I predict that our president, and the Republican Party that controls the legislature and the Supreme Court will definitely cripple the economy, and will find a way to blame the party, where they are not in control.

Americans obviously didn’t understand what tariffs are, didn’t get that it’s an import tax which they must pay on goods and products they buy from Canada, a tax which tRump collects from Americans and uses to pay for tax-cuts for the richest citizens. But one more thing Americans don’t get is that before this fateful day an unofficial boycott against ALL US goods has been growing since tRump insulted Canada’s Prime Minister and threatened Canada’s sovereignty—whereas Canada’s official countervails ( which only kicked-in today )only target certain US goods, not ALL of them like ordinary Canadians are doing in growing numbers right now—in fact, the imposition of tRump’s tariffs today has only made the unofficial boycott bigger and more organized. It’s heartening that so many nations have solicited Canada, offering alternative sources for common US exports to Canada —citrus fruits, pharmaceuticals, and other manufactures, to name a few.\n\nI don’t think Canadians even realize how big this unofficial boycott is getting because it’s growing so fast. I’ve never seen a surge in Canadian patriotism like this. Never in my seven decades —which includes the two Referenda on Quebec separation. And there’s a federal election approaching when all partisans will be one-upping each other in the patriotism department—which manifests in more boycotts of US goods and hospitality services.\n\n Americans should know that the unofficial boycott is more harmful to US exporters than the official targeted countervails because it features immediate and longterm diminishment of Canadian purchases of US goods—all retailers know it’s very hard to recover lost customers once they’ve found alternatives (and the added patriotic effect only makes it worse). Included is diminishment of Canadian visits to the USA. Indeed, the internet is replete with testimonies of Canadian”snow birds” not only forgoing their annual sojourn in the Florida or Arizona sunshine but also of selling their properties there with the parting shot, “I will never vacation in the US again!” Already Mexico has seen its visits from Canadians (who have had a modest presence in Mexico for years) surge to unprecedented levels. I know from much-welcomed temp Mexican construction workers in BC (where I live) that they view Canadians completely differently from our mutual US neighbours—and now that affection is growing like never before. \n\nI’m continually amazed at how uninformed Americans are about tariffs—and misinformed by tRump and his goofy, preposterous, and ridiculous fantasy of world-domination. When tRump uses the lame excuse to implement emergency powers —that Canada is “allowing” (as Vance puts it) fentanyl to “pour into the USA”—it’s tantamount to saying Ukraine started the war with Russia. The man is a tendentious liar and narcissistic megalomaniac. \n\nI have faith that the great nation of the USA will reject tRump’s crazy policies—we all just have to hang on and let the needless suffering for both our nations (and the world with regard strategic alliances) play out until he either relents, is swamped in legal repercussions, is impeached, or otherwise removed from office!\n\nGood luck my American and Ukrainian friends!

Agree with Trudeau here, and as a Canadian conservative, that’s not something I say easily. But let’s get real here. Trump is NOT a smart guy. He has cratered most businesses he’s started, he has no understanding of economics whatsoever and he speaks like a five-year old. Conversely, here in Canada and around the world (including many in the US who are voicing heir support here) we have A LOT of smart people and an enormous amount of good will, and we will persevere and overcome. I'm Danish - we have a big movement in Denmark to boycot American goods. The US has failed in so many ways. They will learn - perhaps to late - what the price is. In the mean time I urge people around the world who supports Ukraine, Mexico, Canada and Europe - who supports the right to freedom - to buy goods from each other. Lets join together with Japan, Australia, South Korea etc - let's show the US that YES, they were important - yes they WERE the leaders of the free world - but they lost the right to that title the moment they selected Trump for president again. I almost forgot what an actual leader sounds like. I'm usually reasonable enough to realize that while I may disagree with many policy decisions, there's usually a relatively coherent line of thought to back said actions up. The problem here is that there’s no clear logic behind using tariffs as a tool to curb fentanyl trafficking or immigration. I'm not going to speak on the issue of immigration at the Canadian border because there simply is none. Yes, there are illegals from Canada, but almost 100% of them are from overstaying visas rather than crossing the border unlawfully. So let's talk about fentanyl. \n\nMost fentanyl in the US originates from China, often in precursor form, and is then processed in Mexico before being smuggled into the states. But it's typically trafficked in small, high potency quantities, often hidden in legitimate shipments or through mail, and only on very rare occasions is it being brought in by individuals crossing the border. It has _never_ been documented to have shipped in as part of large scale commercial imports, so a 25% tariff on legal trade with Canada and Mexico doesn’t directly target the black market supply chain at all.\n\nIf we take Trump’s reasoning at face value, the argument seems to be that he wants to exert economic pressure on Mexico and Canada as a means of having them crack down harder on drug trafficking networks. But the issue is that fentanyl simply isn’t coming in through mass import channels, so all this looks like is a punitive measure without a clear mechanism to actually achieve its stated goal. And the implications? Drastically higher costs for consumers in the US, Canada, and Mexico, with absolutely nothing to show for it.
