Re: career opportunities. I am a Canadian citizen. I worked as a land surveyor assistant from 2017 to 2019 in Alberta. I had very few career opportunities. My supervisor didn't bother to teach me the trade. I was just assigned to be a pack mule/hole digger. I had a geomatics diploma and intended to become a surveyor after working as an assistant for 1 year. I waited 3 years and didn't make any progress. I was so frustrated I moved to France. France has way more opportunities for me. The salaries are lower. But the cost of living is lower too, and the hours are around 35h/week (vs 80+ in Canada). Yeah, it's legal for tradesmen in Canada to work 24/4 day shifts with 12 hour days. This doesn't take into account the 1~2 hours of unpaid work every night to write field notes and charge the batteries/cleanup the equipment. It doesn't help that the salaries are hourly too. So in the slow months you better have money saved up, or you'll be begging for food.

The Canadian economy is made up of 80% in the service sectors and only 20% in the manufacturing and natural resources sectors ! This means only that 20% is the only sector of the economy is where new revenue is generated and the country is mostly living on credit every time you buy something made elsewhere !

I have a similar background as I immigrated to Canada when I was 6 years old. I haven't travelled across 50 countries like Alina but I'm well travelled and Canada is still, in my opinion, the best country in the world. Besides the strong passport and political stability Alina mentioned, Canadians also benefit from the great healthcare system, environmental protections, capital markets, educational system, labour standards, etc. This country has afforded me a wonderful career that allowed me to build wealth while giving me substantial financial flexibility and freedoms. Canada is not perfect but I'm so grateful to my parents for moving us here.

I am Canadian born and no longer live there because of the things that are happening there. I live in rural USA now. Things are not perfect here either but they are better than Canada. I was a soldier, was deployed and thought I was fighting for Canadian values. Now I sit at home and watch as my country crumble down around me. I'm a wounded/mildly disabled Vet. I got wounded again back in Canada by getting my leg stabbed/slashed. I waited 4 years for imaging, and routinely have to wait 2 weeks to see a doctor for a 5 minute visit. Bombed-out roads in Syria are no worse than the pothole-infested streets. Under the streets, we have failing water mains.\nOur current government has no compass, we have no direction and our priorities are random and trivial. I completely agree with you. Canadian immigration policy should carefully consider the quality of individuals entering the country. As an Indian, I’ve personally encountered several instances of rude behavior from people who don’t represent the best of our community, including one just yesterday while I was walking with my mom on the street. I wish the situation will improve.

Canada , imo, is quietly against immigration. That’s why they add the “Canadian experience “ to job qualifications. That’s a passive way of screening out immigrants. Many immigrants were well skilled and can quickly adopt but then that position is gone from Canadians . Also immigrants, believe in nepotism, and quickly populate other positions with friends and family.

I'm a Canadian and I moved to Asia 20 years ago. My motivations for leaving were the endless winters, the absolute necessity of having a car and two sets of tires, crazy insurance prices, and getting taxed on everything without seeing benefits. Now when I visit I am shocked at the price of everything from food to gas to hotels. In addition, I hear that housing has gone through the roof. Many can't afford to buy and face bidding wars to rent a place. With oil, timber, minerals and more, Canada should not be in this position. The government(s) have really messed things up and need to start reversing these trends now.

I agree with you leaving. I am a 3rd generation retired Canadian who used to be proud to be so. Now I am not, in fact I am embarrassed to say I am Canadian as it is nothing to be proud of. I think of how good things were in the 70's and 80's while I was young and now how bad things are today and it is truly depressing. Back then if you are willing to work, you could make a decent living, buy a car, a house and raise a family - today, good luck with that. The people in the west have had no say in the faulty governments we have had as Ontario and Quebec have put the final nails in our coffin when they elected that buffoon JT for a third consecutive term and then the NDP kisses his butt to join up and torture us more when most sane Canadians did not ask for this. JT is truly an embarrassment for this country although the US is in step with comatose Joe. I feel sorry for the kids and many others that are trying to survive, make a living and buy houses. Reverse discrimination has been at play for 20 years or so but is really out of control these days when a white Canadian kid that has got 5 yr honours degree in University has trouble finding a job today because you are the wrong colour. I'm a Canadian living in the UK and can say two things - 1) if the West would stop bombing/exploiting/waging proxy wars in so many countries and displacing millions of people, this wouldn't be an issue. Stop funding war and pressure your reps to focus public funds back into your community. 2) The exploitative housing market has everything to do with corporate greed. We need to hold government and capitalism to account not immigrants. Blaming humans for wanting to survive is insane.

Canada is bigger than USA with a population less than California. They have as many natural resources as Russia. They are sitting next to the biggest market where you can export even stones if you attach a story. Canadians can all live well from anyone of the following: Export wood, Fish, Oil, gas, electricity, wheat, potatoes, etc... Just one item is enough. Yet Canada manages to have so many homeless and poor people \nBut to live in Canada is like spending half your life inside a freezer.
