we try to avoid going to the US at anytime - dont care to take a chance on either being ill in the US or being shot at a movie or mall - sick people that dont seem to care about their public Wise up guys ! Health insurance is a right not a priviledge - If everyone paid into it the cost would be very low and top notch health care would be for everyone not just the wealthy

I did my postgrad in NYC (Columbia U) and in the years after I move back to Canada to start my career), I would go back multiple times each year. \n\nIf I could afford it (now that I'm retired), I'd love to live there again.\n\nBut is NYC REALLY part of the US, I wonder... Brown people move to white countries. White people don’t go to Brown countries. If I a white man went to a Muslim country and tried to open a Christian church I would be killed or Jailed. I would never even consider it... any country that could elect Trump is not a place I could ever live. I refused to even visit while he was president. The gun culture is terrifying. The health care system seems unaffordable. I might visit again someday, but not to the southern states where women's rights seem to be going down the toilet...I love Canada!

We recently drove to my daughter’s cottage in Montana. We live in BC. She and her family live in Alberta. Another couple, two doctors, was joining us for the weekend. We got lost and they did too. Not a problem, we all arrived eventually. They commented that they did not feel that they could go to someone’s house and ask for directions. We agreed and felt the same thing. In Canada that would absolutely not be the case.

In the past 2 years I have had 5 crainiotomies, 1 kidney removed and a hernia. Looking at this in the USA, this would cost me over $3, 000, 000 for my care. I would be bankrupt. You say that the health insurance cost ONLY a couple of hundred dollars a month ($2400 a year) ... here, I pay NOTHING per month. Most insurance plans in the USA hve a few THOUSAND dollar deductible on top of the monthly payment. Yes, I do pay higher taxes than in the USA but the social programs are worth it ... INCLUDING HEALTH CARE. There is also a reason why the Canadian lapel pin is worn by Americans in when they go to Europe. There is also a reason why part of the French landscape is Canadian soil (Vimy Ridge ... France gave the area to Canada as a THANK YOU for what we did during WW1). The Netherlands sends Canada 1000's of tulips to Canada every year thanking Canada for making part of the maternity ward in Ottawa Hospital Dutch soil. Queen Jiliana gave birth to Margriet and the only way to stay in line for the thrrone was to be born on Dutch soil ... Ottawa complied. Canada also liberated the Netherlands in WW2.

In canada I get 5 weeks vacations. A year maternity leave. Lots of sick days. Giving birth is FREE ( heard from an American woman she was in debt 30K for a complicated twin birth ????????). I’m a bit late to this discussion but I agree with the 99.9% of other responses. Although, I have enjoyed trips to beautiful areas of the US, & live close to the border where a day trip was a common occurrence. I now hesitate to even travel there as I do worry about gun violence, racism & honestly cannot understand the cult of followers who would even consider voting for an incompetent, narcissistic criminal to lead their country…. it’s mind blowing! You are desensitized regarding violence/school shootings… choose where you live? What’s the guarantee that this couldn’t happen anywhere in the US, even rural areas? On the topic of living in Canada, it’s beautiful with lots of country to see/enjoy from west coast to the east coast & we have healthcare, a government (although not perfect) elected by & working for the people. I’m proud to be Canadian, wouldn’t move for anything! We’re your neighbour but as it happens sometimes we just can’t believe what’s going on next door.

Hell no! And that is coming from someone who has family members living in the States, was married to an American and has spent a lot of time there in New England, and in Florida. Titusville area of Florida is like my second home, but I would never move there. Not a fan of people having to carry guns with them everywhere they go, and healthcare for profit is wrong on so many levels. I have firsthand experience with that and it was as frightening as the gun culture down there.

I'm from South Africa where we have plenty of problems like rampant crime (that will affect you if you are ignorant) and serious electricity problems, to name only two. I have family who moved to the US and friends in Canada, and I would not move to the US. My kids are safer in school in crime capital SA because of the US gun laws, we can go to concerts with no worry for the same reason, we have freedom of religion and women are not subjected to religious-based reproductive laws (I do not understand why Tyler kept skipping over those concerns every time he came across them). We moan about our medical system, but people who cannot afford medical cover, which is most people in SA, still have access to decent medical care.

Canada has another problem that you forgot to cover. Canada isn't an entrepreneurial nation like America. Canadians are less risk taking compared to Americans which means you can have an influx of immigrants but less jobs for them therefore they will leave back to their own countries again. Most of the top employers of engineers in Canada are foreign companies, not local. Salaries in America are high due to the immense labor competition for engineers as there are more startups and entrepreneurial people. \n\nThen in Canada they require certain Canadian certifications especially for doctors which isn't as bad as in the US. So you have some engineers or doctors that end up working low paid jobs since they would have to repeat school in Canada from an accredited Canadian university. I don't see this as a problem for the US at all because these immigrants aren't going to create new companies and are merely looking for a job. Canadians not being as entrepreneurial and not starting companies to compete for the talents of these professionals will just result in these professionals working out of the Canadian offices of American and Asian tech companies.\n\nOverall not a win or loss for America. Even if these guys end up working in the Canadian division of American companies, American companies will still have the benefit of their talent which is a win at a lower cost for the US companies.

In my opinion The H1B visa sounds like voluntary slavery. If I was Indian I would take the education I learned in The US and go build up India.

My American husband and I moved to Los Angeles from Montreal, because of the fact there was still a lot of live music compared to other places. It was a great 17 years of music but guns started to be more of an issue. Health care was big, and was going to affect us soon, and then tRUmp came in . We knew that the changes were NOT going to be for better health care, or better gun laws, or better immigration policies, and we moved back to Canada. Now we don't even want to visit because of the current situation re all the aforementioned issues. I wouldn't dream of moving back. And numerous friends have asked how can they get into Canada.The Canadian immigration site crashed when tRump won. if not married to a Canadian, most people would be rejected. i appreciate our system of government; tRump would have been tossed out early on with a Vote of No Confidence.

My best friend is from Bangladesh and is only staying here past her graduation in chemical engineering because she decided to go to grad school. If there were more opportunities for her in industry, though, she probably would've just gotten a job. Very few wanted to sponsor her or anyone's visa, though. She's constantly telling me how she's thinking of moving to Western Europe or East Asia someday. It's so sad for us to make our country undesirable for immigration just because we make it difficult.

As an immigrant to the US, you summed up the issue very nicely. Another thing I noticed is that people who cannot get an h1b visa sometimes would go to Canada, get a Canadian passport to secure an insurance, and then come look for a job on TN visa or EB1 visa in the US. As an immigrant who comes to the US on a EB3 visa, I really hope that the US can prioritize employment based visas instead of family based or even illegals immigrants for the future of the country. One thing that makes a lotta EB immigrants scratch our heads is that why would the US government put all their efforts in taking in illegal immigrants and grant them a safe path to citizenship instead of taking care of the ones coming in legally first. Not to say the other group isn’t important, but it’s a weird way to prioritize things.

The US has a great propaganda machine, that’s why so many people blindly try to go there instead of trying to go to saner places. The Google salaries are insane, but getting into Google requires even more luck, so perhaps a comparison with a smaller (non-MAMAA) company would be better?

8:15 there’s a reason for this. It’s a melting pot in America. Bringing all these different cultures together… but if too many from one country show up, they’ll make a community too large that they don’t need to melt with the population. There are Chinatowns and Little Italys and whole Mexican communities, but ultimately everyone has to interact with everyone else. Allowing 300,000 Indians to get green cards every year and only 1,000 Norwegians would lead to the Norwegians merging well with the country, while the Indians would all move to one or two cities and make entire sections of the cities like small versions of their own country. Which is the last thing we want. Once an immigrant community gets enough power to be a voting block, things are scary, but once it has enough power that they start getting their own representatives and passing laws for the rest of us? Laws the look like laws they had back in their own countries… that led them to run from their countries in the first place? It’s a concern. We want people to adapt to the USA and not try to adapt the USA to them. Over time, the US does change due to the growing voting blocs. But that’s after generations of those immigrant populations getting larger, and their children being born and raised in the country they’ve adapted to. When I see a protest of Muslim immigrants burning pride flags, or Chinese and Spanish-speaking Hispanic immigrants who never bothered to learn English, I see problems with our immigration system. But the kids of the Arab immigrants will be more tolerant, and the Hispanic kids will have grown up in American schools. Most Chinese-American kids might speak some Chinese at home with their parents, but they’re worse at it, and their first language is English. It takes second Generation immigrants to really start meshing with America. But if entire school districts are all Indian, and every store, restaurant, and business in a whole town is Indian, then those kids won’t adapt to America. They won’t get bits of their home culture from their time at home and with their neighbors, while also getting bits of American culture from their classmates and other people around them. Nope. They’ll only be exposed to the first Generation who completely took over the area- IF, we allowed for unfettered immigration from the largest countries. It’s a fact that immigrant communities like to stick together. But if not enough people are in that community that you need to reach out to others around you, it helps expose you to the rest of America… Anyway! There are a ton of shows that indirectly show this phenomena. Fresh Off the Boat. The Sopranos. Even Brooklyn 99. We see as traditional and hard-to-adapt parents have to deal with kids in the next generation who are more American, don’t follow the same customs and traditions as their parents, and overall just left more of their old culture behind. No one is asking that immigrants abandon their cultural ties, but if you come to America, there are things that people need to change and accept if they’re going to live here.

I have a different perspective… as I’ve lived in Canada since I was 2 years old (same with my wife). I would 100% go to the us for vacation even for a whole month, but it’s a big NO to move over the border. \n\nReasons why: \n\n1. Guns at legal, and to buy at Walmart (like what the heck you can buy a gun at Walmart?). You can get shot for ringing the wrong doorbell or for parking at the wrong house.?\n\n2. The criminality is crazy (I’ve watched a lot of true crime over the 6-7 years and one of the conclusions I’ve made is that it’s mostly in the US. And the number of murders is insane.)\n\n3. Canada already has sepratist issues in Quebec and its French speaking population. A sudden influx of immagrants into a relatively small country is going to cause social issues.\n\nWhy would an immigrant convert to the local culture/language when there are so many people in his very neighborhood that are from where he's from?\n\nImmigration has enriched the USA greatly. However, we do this slowly and to a manageable degree.

One thing I would like to note is that Canada is not welcoming in only highly skilled workers. If you can work at a Tim Horton's you qualify. This has lead to a flood of new workers who HAVE to have a job in order to stay at a time where the existing labour pool is refusing work due to pay lagging far behind inflation for two decades. Those salaries discrepancies you listed are not exclusive to the tech sector, they are economy wide. Often you'll here talk of a labour shortage in Canada, but ask for the number of applicants to jobs and you quickly find out the reason no one accepted is because the full-time job offered requires a part-time job to barely make ends meet. \n\nAnother factor is that housing happens to be the bread and butter of ~40% of our MP's. Hell our Minister of Housing himself owns properties that have appreciated massively due to the lack of supply and high demand. He then goes on national TV and says high immigration will solve the housing crisis despite Canada already having over 4% of our entire labour force already in the construction industries (America is a little over 3%) and the men and women who build our houses being unable to afford the homes they build ($22.07/hr CAD average or ~$16.66 USD. compared to $22.29/hr USD). 14% of our national GDP is housing. 14% of our entire economy is just money changing hands internally with nothing of value made. \n\nThen you have the combo of landlords benefiting from the immigration programs who try and evict the tenants on their properties to replace them with immigrant labour. They then take the cost of rent right out of their salaries. The workers can't quit their jobs because if they don't have a job they are at risk of being deported and also loosing their homes so they end up shacking 8 to an apartment to try and make ends meet. This becomes the standard the rest of the economy has to meet. \n\nIt is a rare sight to see someone who is anti-immigrant in Canada, but the majority of people here understand that immigration is a problem the way it is currently run. You have people who come here hoping for a new life being forced to sleep outside under bridges because while they may have a job they don't have a home and the shelters are already 200% capacity. Tent cities are the norm in any major urban centre now. There are crack dens in Toronto that are the same price as Castles in the UK. And this problem is only going to get worse.

I work in tech and need to mention the negatives of H1B even though having tons of highly skilled workers would be nice for country.\n\nThe first issue is that H1B workers are happy with accepting lower pay for relevant position so long as they get opportunity to get a company sponsor. This causes a downward pressure on wages obviously.\n\nSecond is they are also VERY obedient Caste like stuff going on between Indians or absolute silence from East Asians on anything that needs to change. This causes management expectations from workers to be skewed against citizen workers.\n\nThird, they are only here short time to earn as much as possible, even some I know shared a 1 bedroom between 2 people just to hoard as much as they make cause when they go back to their country it means they are rich. So they work 24/7 and causing company expectations to be unrealistic for citizen workers.

Not only would I not move there, I will not visit, unless I have to. Just a point I noticed, you keep skipping over the stripping of women’s rights and going back 50 years. That was a little concerning, but all are valid issues to not move there

I'm British, and I would choose Canada over the U.S.A. But? There are good reasons many Brits I know, would pack to go to the U.S.A today if they could.(The flight cost is immense though.)\nWhy would they want to? Kinda the american dream. Bright lights, believed untapped opportunities, and most of all to gain some of that American infectious enthusiasm & non jaded openness. I consider Canadians as generally having the best traits of U.K & U.S people. No matter what kind of insurance you have, you still have to deal with a stupid amount of red tape and bureaucracy just to get your care covered, and the drug prices are out of control. and you have no idea when that horrible health issue is going to happen to you. In Canada, I go to the doctor, I give my health card, done deal. The healthcare system in Ontario particularly is under attack and they're trying to privatize hospital care by underfunding everything else. But our premier is also a Conservative Trump Lite wannabe who is buddy buddy with a lot of rich folks.There are absolutely problems here, Canada is dysfunctional in a lot of ways.
