Yes! Canada is accepting too many international students. My neighborhood is inundated with Indian students due to the private colleges near by and the rents have sky rocketed. There is no available homes or apartments to rent. Very frustrating.

As a realtor in London, I agree that we feel the pressure on our rental market. Rent has increased dramatically in the past 5 years. Growing families that rent are choosing to live with less space and stay where they are to keep costs down. rents could more than double by going to a new home (depending on how long they have lived in their current hime and the larger unit they will then move to.) I love our international students and support many of them find housing, but it doesn’t take away from the crisis we see. Since Covid our homeless population has exploded along with surrounding communities like St. Thomas and Woodstock.

Post secondary institutions love foreign students. They charge waaaaay more and make that much more.\nThe response against more foreign students by liberal media is the threat that your tuition will go up with limits on foreign students.\nWhat about spaces? Low income workers are the most screwed class of people especially if single.

Why is Canada bringing international students from a poor family...if they can't afford to live in Canada then they shouldn't be coming to Canada.?? I lived in Canada for over 20 long suffering cold years. My rent in 1982 in Kamloops for a large two bedroom appartment was 105 bucks a month. Then when I moved back to Toronto and got an apartment right on Young at Grosvenor our rent shot up to a tough 620 bucks a month (all utilities included) but I was making a lot of money so it seemed like the good life. I wonder how expensive that luxury high rise is today? Probably about $4500 per month would be my guess. Canadians don't like to talk of the negatives in Toronto, but I feel really sorry for some of my family still there. My mother in law broke her back. All they could do is give her pain killers for the four months before she could get penciled in for surgery. And that was before it all went to hell. It's nice to see so many shots of places that were once so much a part of my life, but in all honesty moving to the States was the best thing I ever did. It was in fact like an escape from madness. Now similar crazyness is here, even on the South East coast of the US. Time to look for another escape. Any suggestions?\nOh, and my friends cousin got murdered in the Jane and Finch area years ago. The answer is yes. Those students know that it is a ticket to stay. A foot in the door. They are a strain on government services, housing, food banks and most come here without proper resources that is one of the requirements for entry. Even if they pay more it shouldn't take spaces that Canadian should be entitled to. They take jobs that belong to Canadians, housings that belong to Canadians. In london ontario close to 12 thousand international students take up the affordable housing for people of london. This causes so much distress on the low income people try to find a place .Then greed of developers and landlords causes the rents to go up so much that those on fixed incomes can't afford there rents and rent evictions happen as landlord look to cash in . Time to stop this madness. Local government in london has done little to stop this issue either.

I don't care if int'l students pay $250K/year. The housing situation is out of control; foreign ownership is out of control; anchor family visas are out of control and we're all paying too much for rent and mortgage. Give the universities and Canadian citizen students more money and stop accepting mass immigration students

Canada is only accepting international students who can afford the rent that is triple the price it was 3 years ago.

Shut down the foreign student programs and this will contribute to reducing the housing pressure. Less foreign students will result in reduced rents and allow post secondary to be more feasible for domestic students. Investing in domestic students in essential for Canada's long term growth as opposed to this short sited tactic of training foreign students who leave. Also, encourage domestic students into the trades as we already have too many with university educations. We need trades people more now than ever... the housing shortage is a great example of this.

Canada needs to limit immigration based on available infrastructure.\nPrices have skyrocketed and people can't find places to live. One building owner laughed in my face and said we aren't building these apartments for Canadians. He explained that he can get one years rent up front from international people and he keeps raising prices.. It's plain to see there is a problem.

I live in London i know all about International students and how crazy things are since rental properties are non existent and the price has skyrocketed for rental properties and another is the city transit system that is always packed with many buses are having to tell people to wait for the next bus because it is so packed. it is getting out of control in my opinion because not only do we have the students we have all the Asylum seekers on top of that and how they add to the wait lines in the ER and walk in clinics. and then they are looking for places to rent to but there is nothing because everything is packed.

The world is changing for greed...I used to rent an apartment 7 years ago in the centre of Madrid for 600€ per month, now it would cost around 1200-1300€, and salaries have barely improved since then. It is frustrating.

Immigration is less integral to the economy than we think. A trivial increase GDP growth wage growth, is meaningless when housing costs can go up 20% per year. Even other costs are going up because retailers rent is so damn high. I have a family member who is dying because of healthcare backlogs and i have untreated injuries right now because the doctor told me it would be a 6 month wait for a cat scan. Im scared for the future, but at least they gave us MAID .

No, Liberal media and Trudeau team all got it wrong again. International student are rich and educated people. They don't stay in low income housing areas like Trudeau team think these people are using up all rental apartments. They rent lux condos. In the long run, if they want to settle here, they bring money into the country, and they're good for the economy vs many uneducated poor immigrants ended up into gangs. You welcome people to build this country, not the type to impose their values into ours.

It's 100% true. International students are being exploited for tuition money and GIC money. Students have taken huge loans from their home country expecting that they will be able to get jobs and pay off their debt but since last 1 year students are jobless. We are failing to get menial labor jobs. Inflation and rent are sky high and our GIC money is not enough to survive here. I myself sleep hungry sometimes as I don't have enough money to buy food after paying rent. I think if they can't give us jobs and affordable housing, canada should stop calling itself a developed first world country. We should call out the whole system for keeping international students in inhumane conditions.

Laws need changing, students must have rent paid in full base on how long education is. If going school be doctor takes 6 years finish you must have 6 years paid rent in advance.

There some landlords taking advantage of these students turning houses into rental and putting 12 ppl per house. Literally I know someone paying $400 per rent for one bedroom that she shares with two other people that are also paying $400. How is this legal?

I had a house for rent a proper 3 bedroom 1.5 bath semi-detached home in Mississauga where 6 international students wanted to lease the house for 1 year, and I was advised by the City of Mississauga that having unrelated individuals share bedrooms would be considered a rooming house and because I didn't want to risk the wrath of Bonnie Crombie's government fining me I didn't even consider their application. Generally, I would prefer leasing a home out to a family but I was inundated with demand from these students. I don't understand why the Cities won't permit these types of dwellings and why they permit these universities to grow and expand their campuses without ensuring enough housing. I mean Canadians are having a hard time finding homes. The fear as well is letting 5 or 6 students rent your house will turn to 8 or 10 people living there, subsidizing the rent for the original group

I think Canada needs waaay more international students for real. Maybe something could be set up that they also build into housing as well some kind of newER 2024 program that is weaved into housing to help them get place to stay and also to build for them self and after school projects or like flow and around sharing renting and working making money whole studying. Canada is definitely smart enough to realize that they can set something up for international students to make things work on all levels.

Why is the solution building a house per student? Why not invest more in student housing like dorms that can cater thousands of students with a fraction of the land space. Students resorting to living in actual houses or apartments, have to live with like 12 other people to afford rent which is much worse conditions than living in a simple dorm.

Unfortunately that's the problem in most major cities in the US as well. Everyone is moving out of the coast to find more affordable housing but that has made places like Houston, Denver, Nashville, etc.. way too expensive to live in. I moved to Portland last year and all I hear is the locals complain on how much rent has gone up in the last five years alone.

All of the reasons except for #2 and #7 are due to the liberal government policies in BC. For example #3 is a rising issue because they changed how the drug laws were enforced by the police about 20-30yrs ago. Not arresting open drug use in public like they should be as an example. Now they have stores you can buy cocaine in BC. Abusing drugs and homelessness and random violence all go hand in hand.\n\nThe cost of rent in BC is due to foreign home/property ownership getting absolutely out of control. My parents immigrated from Britain in the 1959s after WWII and built a comfortable life! At 72 I live a relatively comfortable life although I have spent all my savings and I currently rent! I lived in Spain with my much younger Colombian wife who passed away in 2019. My pension income is sufficient for me to live since I returned to Canada and I have better than adequate healthcare and dental care! The short story is \nTurd and the Turdettes were elected because Harpoons and his band of buttkissing bootlickers were self-serving incompetents. Now Turd, who has never been competent to be PM, which his long list of scandals should easily prove, is going to compel the election of another incompetent self-serving politician. Canadians never learn, switching from one idiot to another as the country spirals into the sewer. The proposed level of immigration and climate change options will turn Canada into a third world country? Maybe we can call it Turdland and then we will all be Turds!

Ok so this isn't going to be very popular... but let me posit a hypothesis: the rising housing costs might indicate that the city is doing something right, because people are willing to pay more to live there. Supply and demand, right?\n\nI bought a couple of condos within last 10 years. They nearly doubled in value. I'm renting them out at 2300 and 2400/mo; used to be 1500~1800 only a few years ago. They're paying for themselves and then some. It's amazing. Things are great from my perspective.\n\nIf enough people decide that the current housing price isn't worth it and move, the prices should come down. I doubt it'll happen though. I have been in Toronto recently for holidays and it was one of the worst places I have ever been to. The whole city is simply full of cars, it stinks everywhere, you get watched by security all the time when you go shopping (even for clothes), which, as a european, was just a major cultural shock, and once when I used the subway to go somewhere, we could not continue because someone got shot on a street so that is was blocked. The combination with a total lack of any nice place like some nice parks or something (there is the lake, but somehow they managed to literally build an airport on an island opposit of the promenade, which is simply loud and disturbing), I would liteally be depressed after a few months if I had to live there. I am not really sure why people go there despite these high rents. In my opinion, rents would need to be lower than average in such a city...

This is all of Canada, cost of living going through the roof, basic needs, food, rent, Gas increasing by as much as 22% in just the past 2 years. Tent cities in the parks for the fist time ever in my 60 years. And now its winter and January and we have people dying in the street from a lack of shelter and the cold in 2024 ... my God.

I lived in Toronto for almost 25 years but moved to Berlin, Germany, a few months ago. I found the last few years to be really sad and also scary. There is such a huge mental health crisis. The TTC is not very safe feeling. I have friends there who travel with dog or bear spray in their purses. The cost of rent is definitely a huge issue. A lot of friends can never move into a new place and I don't know anyone there who can afford to actually buy a home.\nThe positives are the food options (groceries and restaurants - some of the best in the world), the nice social life, so many things to see and do around the city, and the various beaches and islands.\nThe city is definitely looking uglier and uglier, though, with all of these boxy, glassy condo towers and now with Ford doing things like turning public space into a foreign-owned inaccessible spa.

I am a Canadian on pension and I left Canada for the Philippines . I now have 50 % more money left over every month . Rent is $300 vs $1200 per month . Haircut is $2.40 , beer is $1.15 , Internet plan $ 19.00 per month . Food is cheaper and Restaurants also . Pick a cooler city such as Baguio or do your homework . Women here are feminine . People are good . Choose to live in the Province over the big cities . Immigration is killing Canada and Trudeau is the culprit !

The rural South (of the USA) is rife with empty towns, low rents and cheap homes. People who only want to work remotely and don't mind the culture, it could be worth the move. Make sure they have good internet, don't purchase in a flood zone.

Planning to move to Toronto as a single person. You need a job paying minimum 65-70k just to pay your rent/ bills. As couple it’s easier, combine income 100k with less tax deductions. Now for each kid add 20k. You won’t grow but you will survive. If you want to flex in this city 250k or better is needed.

I have always wanted to visit Toronto, native Chicagoan. That is sad, but all cities have their ups and downs.That is stupid and unfair how rent is increasing.
