I was actually turned away from the Canadian border last summer due to Covid restrictions. Of the 31 countries I've visited as an adult, the Canadian customs guy was actually the rudest and biggest jerk of anywhere I've been. Almost all the rest were boring, except Ukraine. The Ukrainian guy was the only border officer I came across who made jokes. (The Canadian guards were even jerks to the Canadians!)

It’s funny how young Americans currently wouldn’t allow anything bad to be said about Canada. Young Americans believe Canada is what America should be and that it is a perfect country. I always thought it funny how Canada built all their major cities along the Border, they literally piggyback off America. I’m from AZ, I’ve watched immigrants come up and get jobs and start businesses without even being able to speak English.

All this, circa 16 minute speech, could be expressed eloquently. In over 300 years Canada just occupies a lot of space on a geographical map. 90% of its population lives in a 100-150 km swath along the US border, the country was introduced into G-7 etc. by the US and Britain because both have been milking the country's resources for almost all the time mentioned above (it was Britain for most of the time, now joined by the US). We no longer have a country due to truddies open border policy. Anyone anywhere can be called a Canadian citizen it no longer has meaning or distinction.

Nice summary of the main challenges. Reading some of these comments leads me to believe that if one is motivated solely by money, Canada is not a great choice for you as an immigrant. The number of commenters hoping to move to the US from Canada due to greater opportunities to make money while ignoring the real and substantial disadvantages of living south of the borders just emphasizes this. My family are immigrants from the US and we didn’t face the same challenges as immigrants from countries further afield but I do understand the differences between the two countries very well and can state unequivocally that moving to Canada was the best decision our family made. Lower crime, better health care (yes even with the wait times), a fairer system and a “boring” but sane political system more than compensate for the few extra dollars I would make south of the border. In terms of where better prospects going forward for children and grandchildren, with the looming threat of climate change, Canada wins hands down. Extra income means little if you have to spend all of it on personal security and health care deductibles. So if you are only motivated by top line items like gross annual salary, Canada might not be for you and you would be better off looking elsewhere and leaving that immigration spot open to someone who can appreciate the more balanced offering that a new life and future in Canada can offer.

Latin America need to stop violating Border Laws. It's been a part of Latin American Countries culture to violate Border Laws. That must be stopped.

Justin Trudeau seriously caused a huge immigration issue of Mexicans and south americans coming to our country. Like dude I was born in Canada and my parents are immigrints who came legally so I can tell you my side. A non biast side. Since I live and work here I can tell u most people of colour r welcoming, however most people who are here and have trouble finding work dont wanna see more people come and make it harder like texas and arizonia. They dont wanna have a min standard and have a reguee take their job at a quarter of what ur asking. What Justin Trudeau did was really stupid IMO. U opened the door to millions of reguees. This causing a issue more for USA, so they jump 2 international borders. My personal view is lets stip immigration. CLose the border. WE gotta take care of who we have here already. I came to Canada as a student. Applied through to get my permanent residency. Improved my English, also learnt French. Worked multiple jobs... learned the Canadian way of life. Amalgamated myself into this wonderful country and it's even more awesome people... most importantly always paid my taxes and never been on EI... now your telling me I should have just walked across the border and within 12 hours I would have received refugee status... phewww that's a blow out

Okay so this is how third country agreements work. The paperwork in the offices in places like El Salvador is piled higher than the fkn Empire State. Nobody in their right fucking mind would want to wait until their wives are raped, kids taken into cartels. If I'm gonna go by the third country agreement, my family will be taken out one by one by the members of the cartel before the embassy even starts considering my case. So that leaves me with no damn choice but to cross the border illegally. And even then, there's no safety as I'll be hounded by the same guys all the way to the southern border with the States.

I think if canada had been his first choice then it wouldnt look so bad him asking for asualym...but the guy just wants to make dollars so people back in his native country think hes succsesful.....he could have easliy stayed close to the us mex border and made a decent living but no.....he got greedy.

Just keep going north next stop Russia, I,m sure they would give your family asylum, stay in your own country and try to change that one however with the corruption and crime of the socialist type government change would be slow coming feel sorry for them but illegally crossing one border after another is not the answer, countries have immigration laws to keep them safe as well.....

There’s a common saying which states that the difference between Canadians and Americans is that “while Americans side with their fellow citizens against the government, Canadians side with their government against their fellow citizens.” This is stereotype is the best explanation as to why Canada can’t see to develop a viable market economy or compete with other nations on innovations in STEM or the arts. The problem with Canada is that it never developed a culture outside of “not being American” and the result is that their government has been allowed to grow to an enormous size and basically strangle all of the talent out of the country. Canada, despite the fact that it’s an English speaking country on the North American continent, is virtually nothing like America is any sense of the term, and actually has more in common with Scandinavia than it does with the country that borders it’s south.

I love both countries. I have been living in the states for the last 4 years and been in Canada 3 times . I am from Algeria. I love these two countries and wish all the world become like Canada and the U.S in term of friendship . Open border, no wars, business going so well between those two countries and so on.

Wait...so can anyone explain am I getting this right? I am from a European country and to apply for a 12 month work permit/visa in Canada I had to get and translate all kinds of travel documents and documents that prove my identity and that I haven't been prosecuted in my country and drive 16 hours just to get biometrics done. And now all of that is going to waste because the borders are closed for me.\nAnd these people can just show up at this border crossing NOW without documents and just like that enter Canada illegally and that's ok? Canadians can't trespass in facilities that they pay for with their own tax dollars, but illegals can trespass in our country and live off the taxpayer. It doesn't look like we have to obey the law. I've been through this system not me but I've looked it all up and yes if somebody wants to come here to America on a visa somebody hast to be willing to take care of them. i see a world in the future with no borders , as humans this is our planet , and it should be in a human's free will to decide which country he sees his future , not only the country he was born into. if a human thinks analyzes decides to migrate to another country that should be a human's free will.\nthis one concept of planet with no borders , will be chaotic in the beginning 10-15 yrs , but also it will erradicate lot of problems .

I went to canada with my family when i was 6 years old i thought it was so beautiful the native americans treated us with kindness my dad bought me some moccisens there. A chinese immagrant restaurant owner was nice to us the white people many of them wrent very nice this was in 1969 in the summer but i loved the wilderness and wanted to go back and see the indians. I was a dreamer. Unfortenately and through my own fault after i got out of the military honerably discharged . I got a dui again it was my stupidity but i payed my fine did my jail time and got educated about not drinking and driving. It is not a felony i the US but it is in Canada so canada gets ahold of my driving records maybe they hacked in. And said i could not go into canada. I noticed they let george w. Busch in though oh well i dont think canada even pretends fainess under the law . Any way they are now letting elligals into canada and giving them a hotel room . The duplicity is absurd personally i no longer want to go to canada for anything i think the wall should be put on the northern border. I'm from south east Asia and we're suffering many short wars and skirmeshes in our border .Why ?Because we're surrounded by Islamic countries. All these happens only in Asia because half of Asia is Islamic land .

English is the official language in the USA And these people should have to learn it, but no,they expect us to learn Spanish even when they're here illegally in our country.Thats the least theycould do. Canada took in 40,000 walk across the border illegal migrants last year, this year the word is out we are expecting at least 50,000, don't know where there going to stay our hotels are full, don't know where they are going to work the job market is full, Quebec does not want any more and thats not counting the legal immigrants coming into the country. Ontario is having a big homeless problem, among other provinces. Why don't ALLTHE HOMELESS CANADIANS, sneak across the border and then walk back and claim asylum. Someone can anonymously call RCMP to report a CARAVAN of what appear to be MIGRANTS headed up whatever road they will be on. I watch the border crossing show sometimes and when they come back from “vacationing “ in China and pretend that they haven’t brought anything with them and when their bags are inspected they have tons of stuff and have way exceeded the limits and they barely get a verbal reprimand.
