He isn't even in a position to negotiate anymore. He's just causing his country more pain for no reason. Typical socialist. Whole lot of people in the comments don't understand the numbers. Canada has zero chances to win a trade war. Many Canadian businesses are already moving to the US.

You people from XYZ are really like the EU hypocrites that all you got is words. As a Canadian, I hate Trudeau and everything his government has done to the country. I want a PM like Trump that is willing go against the entire system(deep state) and dig out all the dirt even though you're in the way of a lot of powerful people and organizations. Out of all the world leaders today, Trump is the only one with that kind of courage. When I was living in Vancouver, I (and many ppl) would just drive cross the border to get gas and groceries because it's just much cheaper once you're on US soil.... I used to live in a bubble thinking that even though life is tough and it's harding to make a living here but at least it's more peaceful here than the States. I think it is time to use all the unused land to grow our vegetation and any thing else that gets planted to use for the Canadian. We do have the brain and the finances to grow our own fruit even if it takes a couple of years for the plants to produce the vegetation to supply the need. We need to manufacture our own goods. These tariffs are not about policy differences. They appear to be personal. Trump is settling scores. Many Trump voters believe that Mexico, Canada, Russia, China, Ukraine, and even the EU interfered in the US presidential and congressional elections in 2020, 2022, and in 2024 to help the Democrats strip us Americans of our rights and lock Republicans out of power permanently. It doesn't matter if its actually true or not. It's the perception that matters most and that has the bigger consequence. MAGA and President Trump are responding to the appearance of foreign interference in our elections. That's why he's preparing the shut down the DACA program too because we believe the DACA recipients sought to influence the last 4 elections and MAGA wants to punish all of them for that.

The US isn't launching a trade war against anyone. We are closing up shop and are getting ready to take care of our own. There is a massive difference. We cannot be expected to continue supporting other countries economies and defense obligations, when we have 2 generations of working class citizens unable to afford a home or have children. We have entire countries we could fill with the homeless and incarcerated, and veterans who see little to no positive treatment or respect within the job market. Things are already very very bad here in the states. I don't think many Americans realize how bad the economy is. Tariffs will force US companies to reduce the outsourcing of jobs, and force other countries who are over-reliant on trade from the States, to cultivate their own self-sufficiency. This may seem hypocritical when it comes to China, but that isn't a problem you can solve overnight. \n\nTo make it clear, Americans are going to suffer in the wake of this tariff decision, but that is the price we pay to force ourselves to change. We have made ourselves into a very weak country because of overreliance on other countries trade, and other countries overreliance on our intelligence, infrastructure, medical advancements, technological advancements, and defense capabilities. As a german I can okay say wow. What a difference. That’s the way a leader of a country should speak and behave like. Not like that child and clown in the Oval Office who is so much in love with himself. Do the people of USA even have the slightest clue how the country looks like to the whole world for so many years? Amerika used to be THAT country everyone wants to go to finally see it. Trump is good a being president in many ways because he is a business man, not a politician, but in business it's about dominating the market place and your competition, bending them to your will if you can, but when you are president, you need to keep alliances with other countries, not dominate over them, otherwise you weaken your position on the world stage. When you are at the top with the biggest economy, army, you don't need to beat down those with less, you need to keep them on your side so their strength adds to your own, which is why you are at the top. Even a mafia boss won't beat down those under him, unless he wants war, and lose his position as others form alliances to take over top position as no powerful person, president, country wants to be beaten down into submission by anyone, so they create other alliances to match or overtake those at the top. In this case, Trump needs to play the politician or weaken his position, and China will be loving this as they are next in line.

The problem here isn't temporary. Tariffs may or may not be. But when Canada, Mexico, and other countries build alternate trade infrastructure and strike deals that exclude America, this becomes near irreversible and will hurt America's economy well after Trumps term. And that's just trade and economy.\n\nThen there are many relationships worldwide which are already affected, and world leaders are poised to move on without America - leaving it isolated. The US is the most powerful country in the world and can survive alone, but even so, no country flourishes without international partnerships that both parties can rely on. Like Putin, nobody can rely on Trumps word.\n\nHe is destroying everything. And the American public are largely sitting back and watching it. \n\nWake up before it's too late.

We are angry - with those people who ignorantly voted for Trump and those people who chose not to vote. Not the people who chose to vote democratically to remain a democratic country. We are clear that his real agenda is to use this trade war to attempt to coerce us into becoming the 51st state. For MANY reasons, we will not EVER become part of Trump’s America. We will collectively fight in any way possible, even though we know it will be tough, to prevent it. We also know that there is a bigger picture in that it’s clear that Trump is aligned with Putin in the push to destroy democracy globally in favour of an authoritarian world order that benefits only the ultra rich. Canada, the Ukraine, Greenland and Panama are stepping stones to that end goal.

I know I will get attacked in the comments for this, but I grew up in the US watched many presidents come and go, and I have never seen the country that I live in turn so corrupt and evil in my life we have been lied to by our president. A man I did not vote for and it almost feels like it is turning into a fascist regime. I think it is time for me to leave and move to Canada because at least they know the difference between right and wrong. my family, a long time ago fled from fascist Germany and came to America because back then it was the land of the free it terrifies me to know that my family ran from that only to end up right back where it was before in the future my prayers go out to every American citizen and hope that you all rise up, right and left and independent and do what you can to get this dictator out of office. Trade needs to be renegotiated from significantly benefiting every other country but USA. Trump is trying to do that.

In a best case scenario, DJT will rescind the tariffs on Canadian goods. In the worst case, we get even poorer. If this happened after Trump became president the first time, the economy was strong from 4 years of Obama's presidency. Then COVID happened, and for alot of folks here, they haven't recovered financially. Savings and retirement plans are gone. Rent is higher, for many it takes over 50% of their income. So in this emergency time, there's nothing to fall back on. Oh and DOGE will cut SNAP benefits, I'm sure. That's food stamps, meant for the people struggling. It's becoming more and more of Americans. \nAm I depressed? No, I lived through Reagan's presidency. I'm cautious about life, my job, commuting to work, putting food on the table. I'm gonna try growing veggies. I already eat 75% of my meals at home or taken from home-cooked meals. I'm saving as best I can.

I am so sorry Canada, truly. I'm embarrassed that our president would do this. It's shameful. Please know that even though the majority of votes put Trump into office, it wasn't a landslide. Something like 40% of us did NOT vote him in. Therefore, there are many, many Americans who did not want him, do not want his politics and are seriously sorry for his actions.

I love Canada. Canada will always be our ally, but there appears to be some “one sided-ness”. I believe the biggest issue being drugs coming across our border. \nAs someone who lives on the border, we see many Canadian cars coming to the US to shop. They even wear clothes that they throw away in dumpsters so they can wear their new clothes back to Canada without having to pay tax. \nI wish they wld accommodate to our requests.\n\nP.S. Canada (and many other countries) spent decades supporting the maintenance of US hegemony. Look what it got us? To a position where we're pretty much greatly dependent on, and at the mercy of the US. We need to invest more in our own country and make our own products. We should also trade with other countries regardless of what the US thinks of those countries. Trump wants Canada to put tariffs on China in the attempt to further impede that country's economic growth so the US will remain the economic hegemony. Never mind that a trade war with China would put Canada in an even worse position. Given the current events, I say we trade with China even more!

Don’t let his BS fool you! Look around in your own communities. Look at the health care system. How many do you know that don’t have a GP so can’t get proper care even though they are sick. The ER tells us we have to have a general practitioner to get anything done! And then there are communities like on Vancouver Island that have closed ER’s in many cities leaving the injured to drive for 2 to 4 hours to the nearest ER. Have any Canadian citizens not heard of fentanyl deaths? Or had someone within 6 people from them have related addiction issues. How many homeless people wander the streets of your communities? This list goes on and on including things like affordable groceries , affordable homes , affordable utilities! \nACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS! Do Justin Trudeau and his parties actions over their term in office really covey their concern for Canadian citizens? I say NOT!

I used to be a huge fan of America. I truly believed it was the world’s policeman, the guiding force for justice and freedom. I even wished my own country could be more like that. \n\nBut America is no longer what it once was. It’s heartbreaking to see how a once-free and hopeful nation has transformed into something so divided, hostile, and unpredictable. A country that once stood by its friends now turns its back on them. A nation that once fought for unity now thrives on division and conflict. \n\nThere are still many good people in America, and the country is not beyond hope. But deep down, every American must realize—this is not the right path. This is not who you are meant to be. \n\nWake up before it’s too late.
